‘Ted Lasso’ Gets Animated in New Short “The Missing Christmas Mustache”

Christmas came early today for fans of Apple TV+’s hit series Ted Lasso in the form of an animated holiday short — “The Missing Christmas Mustache.”

This heartwarming comedy series follows the story of a man named Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis), a small-time college football coach from Kansas. When Ted receives a job offer to coach a struggling English football team in the UK, AFC Richmond, he hops on a plane to his next destination … despite the fact that he knows next to nothing about soccer. However, what Ted lacks in knowledge, he makes up for with his positive attitude and infectious enthusiasm.

The show’s second season recently finished airing, and it included a wonderfully festive special episode entitled, “Carol of the Bells.” However, it appears that wasn’t all the Christmas cheer the Ted Lasso team had up their sleeves, because our favorite characters are back for the holidays like we’ve never seen them before … animated!

If the animations here look familiar, it’s because this intro was originally seen in “Carol of the Bells.” Fans were left wondering if there would be more to that tease, since the normally solo Ted was flanked by Rebecca, Beard, Roy, Keeley, Jamie, Higgins, and Nate, and our wishes have absolutely been granted. Eagle-eyed viewers will notice that this short is meant to take place during the aforementioned Christmas episode, as everyone is wearing the same clothes.

Channeling the show’s signature brand of humor with an extra dash of chaos and holiday magic, “The Missing Christmas Mustache” is exactly the cheeky reminder we all need to “believe” during the holidays.

Ted Lasso has been storming the awards circuit this year, most recently earning four Golden Globe nominations and four Critics Choice nominations this past month.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Ted Lasso are now streaming exclusively on Apple TV+, and a third season is on the way. In the meantime, catch up on all of our coverage, including episodic recaps, our season 2 review, the best season 1 Ted-isms, and a handy guide to convincing your friends, family, enemies, and even your barista to watch what’s arguably one of the best shows on television right now!

Watch the Red Band Trailer for ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’ Now!

0

Following yesterday’s release of the official teaser trailer for the upcoming comedy-thriller The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Lionsgate has now treated fans to an expletive-filled red band trailer.

Directed by Tom Gormican and co-written with Kevin Etten, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent puts Nicolas Cage in an extremely meta role … Nick Cage. Creatively unfulfilled and facing financial ruin, the fictionalized version of Cage must accept a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a dangerous superfan (Pedro Pascal). Things take a wildly unexpected turn when Cage is recruited by a CIA operative (Tiffany Haddish) and forced to live up to his own legend, channeling his most iconic and beloved on-screen characters in order to save himself and his loved ones.

The movie also stars Neil Patrick Harris as Cage’s agent, Sharon Horgan as his ex-wife, Lily Sheen as his daughter, Ike Barinholtz, Alessandra Mastronardi, and Jacob Scipio.

Watch the red band trailer below, which is virtually the same as yesterday’s teaser, just with an added taste of the film’s hilariously colorful language, namely during the scene where Cage doesn’t realize he’s talking to the superfan that hired him in the first place.

The film’s official Twitter put out a request for fans to tweet their reactions to the trailer using the hashtag #MassiveTalent. In return, they may respond with a custom video.

In case you missed it, a selection of first look stills from the film were also released earlier this week.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent will land in theaters on April 22, 2022.

‘Sweet Valley’: ‘Gossip Girl’ Team to Adapt Hit Series for The CW

0

Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the executive producers behind the hit series Gossip Girl (among many others), have been tapped to adapt the hit book series Sweet Valley High for The CW! The two will executive produce while Ashley Wigfield of the HBO Max reboot of Gossip Girl will write. Schwartz and Savage currently have Dynasty along with Nancy Drew and its spin-off Tom Swift running on The CW.

According to the synopsis released by the network, Sweet Valley will be a new twist on the squeaky clean world of the Sweet Valley High series, which spans over 180 novels and were adapted into a television series that ran for four seasons in the 90s.

“Sweet Valley is the town everyone dreams of growing up in. And there’s no better example of that promise than Elizabeth Wakefield. But when her missing twin sister Jessica miraculously returns, it reignites a lifelong rivalry. It falls to new girl Enid Ruiz to discover that someone (or something) is pulling all the strings, but can she convince the twins that putting their personal war aside is the only way to drag Sweet Valley’s dark roots into the California sunshine?”

Along with Schwartz, Savage, and Wigfield, Lis Rowinski, Peter Chernin, and Jenno Topping will executive produce. There is no word yet on casting or a potential air date for the project, as it is still in development at the network.

‘Hawkeye’ Recap: Season 1, Episode 5 “Ronin”

After a brief tease in the last episode, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova is back and in peak form this week, channeling all of her humor, sass, and deadly skills that audiences came to know and love in Black Widow. Kate Bishop is forced to grapple with the uncertain future of her childhood dreams to be a superhero like Clint Barton, while also faced with the looming threat of Yelena’s mission to take out her idol. And as the stakes continue to rise, Clint attempts to clean up his mess as Ronin, only to realize how dangerous the situation has now become.

Let’s take a closer look at the major takeaways from episode 5, “Ronin.”

Yelena and the Snap

The episode opens with a flashback to 2018, when Yelena was on her post-Black Widow mission to free her fellow assassins from Dreykov’s mind control. We learn that Yelena has helped many Widows at this point. It’s been a difficult journey, but it’s worth it.

When the Snap happens, she’s in the bathroom at a Widow named Ana’s house. We see her fade away into dust, only to reappear five years later following the Blip. Baffled as to how the house has suddenly changed around her in the blink of an eye, Yelena exits the room to find Ana now married with a child. Upon learning what happened, Yelena’s first panicked thought is that she needs to find Natasha. But she’s not yet aware of the sacrifice her sister made on Vormir to obtain the Soul Stone.

Dinner with an assassin

Following a reality check about her supposed future as a superhero, Kate goes to collect her belongings from the remains of her charred apartment. Yelena is there waiting for her … and she made macaroni! After some scolding about Kate’s lack of silverware, the two sit down and have a chat over dinner.

Kate remains wary as Yelena starts off the conversation casually enough, talking about all of the touristy things she wants to do in New York City. She needs to see the glorious Rockefeller tree, after all. However, when Kate asks her if she’s here to talk to Clint, Yelena corrects her and says that she’s come to kill him. The archer is shocked when the assassin reveals that she’s the sister of Natasha Romanoff, and Yelena goes on to question Kate’s hero worship of Clint. She believes that her sister is gone because of Clint, but the two remain at odds, because Kate refuses to back down in her support of him.

Jack Duquesne is caught

Kate admits to Eleanor that she and Clint have been looking into Armand’s murder, and she informs her mother that there’s incriminating evidence against Jack, including his shell company, Sloan Limited. She later returns home to find the police in their house arresting Jack. Eleanor tells her daughter that she looked into him, and she was right. Jack remains positive as he tells Eleanor that he’s been framed while they’re taking him away.

Ronin’s atonement

Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton in Hawkeye
Mary Cybulski/Marvel Studios

A running theme throughout the course of Hawkeye has been Clint’s guilt and pain over losing Natasha in Avengers: Endgame, and it continues on in this episode. Clint visits the Battle of New York memorial, which commemorates the place where the Avenges first assembled in 2012. He takes out his hearing aid, quieting down the noise of the busy city behind him, and he says a few words meant for Natasha. He reflects back on how she was the bravest of them all, loyal, and stubborn. And he says how he’s been doing his best every day to earn what she gave him — the ability to go home to his wife and kids. He tells her he misses her, and says he’s sorry for what he’s about to do.

Clint proceeds to fire an arrow into the windshield of a Tracksuit Mafia truck, which dispenses a note that says, “Maya, meet me tonight where you first met the Ronin. Alone.” We then see Clint give Laura a call to let her know how big of a problem all of this has become. It needs to end tonight, because it’s only a matter of time until the “big guy” gets involved.

Maya and the Tracksuit Mafia wait for Ronin in the parking lot of the car dealership. Ronin incapacitates the Tracksuits one by one until he finally approaches Maya. The two go at it for a bit until Maya falls to the ground, and Ronin removes his mask to show her who he really is: Clint Barton. He tells Maya that he wanted her to see his face. She thinks he’s going to kill him, but he corrects her and tells her that will only happen if someone comes after him or his family. Clint goes on to explain that they’re both weapons, but her rage is what makes her misguided.

Clint tells Maya that on the night of the murder, he was there because an informant that works for her boss had tipped him off. Her boss wanted her father dead, and now he’s using her. Maya manages to get the upper hand, grabbing Clint’s sword, but an arrow comes flying and knocks it out of her hands. Kate stands on a rooftop off in the distance, having tracked Clint’s phone again after leaving him an endless series of unanswered voicemails. After they escape, Kate informs Clint that the assassin was Natasha’s sister, Yelena. He looks shaken. They return to Grills’ place, because he had been insistent that there was no way Clint Barton was staying in a hotel on Christmas.

Meanwhile, Maya finds Kazi after the fight, and he’s relieved to see she’s still alive. Suspicious, Maya asks him why he wasn’t at the meeting the night that her father died. He was his number two, after all. Kazi tells her that he didn’t get the call about the meeting, and Maya takes off.

Kingpin is revealed

A brief scene is shown where Yelena is following Eleanor. Then, Kate receives a series of text messages from an unknown number — Yelena. She tells her that she found out who hired her … Eleanor Bishop. She thought she deserved to know. Kate then shows Clint a photo of her mother pictured beside the man that Clint’s been worried about this whole time, Kingpin. Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk is back.

Episode 6 of Hawkeye will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on Wednesday, December 22. Stay tuned for our weekly episodic recaps, theories, reviews, and more!

Nerds Gets Cheery: A Look Back at the ‘9-1-1’ Christmas Episodes

In this installment of our Nerds Gets Cheery Christmas series, we are taking a look back at the three Christmas episodes of FOX drama 9-1-1! There have been plenty of holiday-themed emergencies and heartwarming moments on the series, so let’s get right into it!

Season 2, Episode 10 “Merry Ex-Mas”

The first Christmas episode of 9-1-1 comes in the second season with “Merry Ex-Mas.” It is filled with Christmas-themed calls, heartwarming moments and even some heartbreaking moments, because of course. So keep reading to see some of the best highlights from the episode!

There were plenty of calls the 118 responded to that revolved around Christmas, but there was a heartwarming call that came from the episode. A Navy dad is trying to make it to his daughter’s choir concert, taking all forms of transportation possible. The city bus he’s traveling on crashes, but luckily he was not injured, just helping an injured person. The 118 is told that he’s trying to make it to the show and they give him a ride on the engine. Sirens and all. Buck, speaking for everyone, says he’s going to cry. The dad makes it just in time, with Bobby, Buck, and Eddie running in behind him and he gives his wife and daughter a big hug. “Every time,” Buck says tearfully.

This episode may be called “Merry Ex-Mas” but it is much more complicated than that. Bobby and Athena got engaged and Eddie finally let Shannon back into Christopher’s life. Maddie, meanwhile, is merely trying to move on from Doug and make this Christmas special since the last one was her worst Christmas. This episode is when Doug reenters Maddie’s life through Chimney, as Jason Bailey, and watching it back, it’s heartbreaking to know what was to come.

Honorable Mention

Perhaps one of the best moments to come out of 9-1-1, Buck and Eddie take Christopher to see Santa Claus and an elf mistakes Buck for also being Christopher’s father. To which Buck just smiles and thanks her after she tells him they have an adorable son.

Season 3, Episode 10 “Christmas Spirit”

The second Christmas episode comes just a season after the first, with season 3’s “Christmas Spirit.” Again, there were plenty of Christmas-themed calls and plenty of emotional and heartwarming moments, so keep reading for all the highlights!

Shopping can be a pain, especially around the holidays, but one call in this episode involves a woman fed up with shoppers and starts pepper spraying people trying to get a toy. She even ends up pepper spraying Santa Claus. A single mom collapses in front of her son, and he bravely calls 9-1-1. Maddie helps the kid, telling him to do CPR and keeping him calm. He does CPR on his mom until the 118 arrive and do their magic. By the end of the episode, the mom gets out of the hospital just in time to spend Christmas with her son.

The holidays were less than merry for some characters. Michael was feeling lonely and was sleepwalking. He later walks through a glass window and it’s revealed that he has a tumor. Eddie, meanwhile, is feeling bad that he’s working on Christmas so he can’t spend the day with Christopher. For Maddie, it’s all about getting closure and moving on. Following the events with Doug in season 2, Maddie and her therapist take a trip to Big Bear where Doug died. She relives that day, talks to him, forgives him, and tells him that she survived him and she will never be sorry for that. It’s such a powerful moment in which Maddie finally finds closure after all these years. She’s always been so terrified of Doug, even after he died, and for her to finally move on is inspirational.

Honorable Mention

While Buck is helping Santa at the beginning of the episode, some upset kids asked if he was going to die. Buck’s response? “He’s not really Santa.” “He’s just pretend.” “This Santa isn’t Santa.” There were some upset kids and definitely some upset parents.

Read our full recap of “Christmas Spirit” here to check out everything that happened in the episode!

Season 5, Episode 10 “Wrapped in Red”

The last and most recent Christmas episode of 9-1-1 happens to be the most recent episode of the series. The winter finale of season 5, “Wrapped in Red,” involved plenty more Christmas calls, heartfelt scenes, and an ending that may leave the 118 shorthanded. Keep reading for all the highlights from the episode!

Jack Zeman / FOX

The calls for this episode were definitely amped up a bit from previous Christmas episodes. The 118 responded to a trolley accident involving a two-timing husband, a true Hallmark Christmas movie in the making at an office where a woman falls down an elevator shaft (she ended up getting the guy for the holidays), and a partially collapsed apartment structure, which unfortunately leaves the tenants displaced for Christmas. The Call Center, meanwhile, keeps getting annual holiday calls from a sweet old lady about a possible emergency. Athena ends up going to her house to talk to her, and it’s found out she’s just lonely.

Christopher just wants to have the perfect Christmas, and after getting nightmares about his mom, he admits to Eddie that he’s afraid this is going to be his last one, that he’s going to be dead next year. Buck isn’t feeling very merry because he’s missing Maddie, Chimney, and Jee. Wanting to spread some Christmas cheer after people cancelled on Bobby and Athena’s Christmas dinner, the two of them decide to go to the motel where the displaced tenants are staying to provide them with a big holiday party. Eddie lets Bobby, Buck, Hen, and Ravi know that he can’t be away from Christopher, who is uncertain about where his dad is going to be a year from now. He’s leaving the 118.

Honorable Mentions

As Buck is trying to figure out what to get Taylor for Christmas, he asks Bobby what he got Athena for their first Christmas together. An engagement ring, Bobby answers. “Oh. No. Not doing that,” Buck says.

Check out our full recap of “Wrapped in Red” here, as well as an analysis on Eddie’s possible departure here.

‘Riverdale’: Chris O’Shea Joins Series in a Recurring Role

0

When Riverdale comes back in March following tonight’s big 100th episode, the town is going to have one extra resident. YOU star Chris O’Shea is coming to the Town with Pep.

According to Deadline, O’Shea will portray Riverdale’s newest resident, Percival Pickens, in a recurring role, continuing the fine name alliteration many characters have on the series. While there isn’t a Percival Pickens in the Archie Comics series, there is a General Pickens who is part of the town’s local history. It’s possible he could be a descendant from the army general, but it’s hard to tell. Whether or not this Percival will be good or bad news for our beloved Riverdale gang has yet to be seen.

Chris O’Shea recurred as Andrew on the most recent season of Netflix’s YOU, and can also be seen on CBS’ Magnum P.I. and Madam Secretary as well as NBC’s Gone and Freeform’s Baby Daddy.

The 100th episode of Riverdale airs tonight on The CW and the series will return on a new night next year on Sunday, March 6. Check out our other Riverdale coverage here.
