‘Dexter: New Blood’ Recap: Episode 10 “Sins of the Father”

The Dexter: New Blood finale is here, and everything finally comes to a head. Dexter is ready to move on with Harrison. However, a confrontation with Angela makes things a bit more difficult. Read on to find out what happens in the finale episode “Sins of the Father.”

Warning: Spoilers beyond this point. Read at your own risk.

The Smoky Aftermath

Angela heads to the cabin as she listens to what would’ve been Molly’s podcast episode about Matt. Before finding Dexter, she issues an APB for Molly. She finds Dexter, saying that the fire was most likely arson, but he claims he doesn’t know who has qualms with him. Harrison comes over and covers, thinking maybe it could be some Moose Creek kids. When Angela and Logan sift through the cabin’s ashes. She asks Logan to follow up on the Moose Creek lead but stops mid-sentence when she spots something on the ground. We don’t see what she found, but remember how some things don’t melt in fire?

Audrey, Zach, Scott, Logan, and Tess bring Harrison and Dexter a few boxes of supplies, followed by presenting Harrison with a letter jacket. Dexter tells Harrison they should think about where to live, in a place that’s not Iron Lake. Harrison doesn’t want to move, but Dexter says they must so that they can “do what [they] do.” Harrison asks what that entails. After Dexter gives him the shortened version, Harrison seems on board.

You Have the Right to Remain Silent

Angela returns home where Dexter and the kids are finishing up dinner. Angela sends Audrey and Harrison out for a few more items. When they’re gone, Angela remains neutral with Dexter until she doesn’t. She pushes him away and holds him at gunpoint, directing him to kneel. He begins reaching for a nearby knife when Logan shows up. They arrest Dexter for Matt’s murder and bring him to the station.

Angela interrogates Dexter in her office, first asking about his whereabouts the night Matt disappeared. Then she shows him the footage from the wilderness camera again, explaining why the unknown heat signature is Dexter. Dexter makes excuses for it, refusing to give her anything. She shows him the titanium screws and the letter she received, furthering her argument with the titanium screw Dexter had. So, Angela lays out her theory about what happened (and she’s pretty close) and how Dexter disposed of Matt. She reminds him that titanium doesn’t melt. Still, Dexter resists, explaining that this was probably all Kurt’s doing. He adds salt to the gaping wound by telling Angela she’s probably still grieving her friend, which causes Angela to yell at him. Logan rushes in and suggests they give Dexter a minute to gather his thoughts.

In another area of the station, Logan thinks Dexter’s story is plausible enough, which means a jury will think the same. Angela gets frustrated because he doesn’t know the full context. Logan asks what it is, but she wants to be certain before saying anything else. She preps to head out. She tells Teddy to bring in Kurt (good luck with that), lets Harrison know he can see Dexter, and instructs Audrey to leave with her.

One More Tuna Sandwich

Logan brings Harrison to see Dexter. Dexter tells Harrison why he’s there, but that Harrison is safe. Dexter has been in tougher spots and will get out of this. He sends Harrison to see Tess, who will feed him and give him a room. Outside, Angela tells Audrey there’s more to what Harrison said about Jim at the party. However, she only reveals that Jim dangerous. Audrey gets frustrated and wonders why Angela would let Jim into their lives. They spot Harrison walking across the street, and Audrey wants to go talk to him. Angela stops her. She says Harrison isn’t dangerous, but she wants Audrey to go home instead. She promises to share everything.

Logan brings Dexter something to eat (a tuna sandwich, of course), and Dexter still tries to spin the narrative to his advantage and how he wants to be there for Harrison. Dexter thanks Logan before he leaves. Next, Logan brings some food to Harrison and the two eat together. Logan asks if Harrison heard or saw anything with Matt, as everything happened right around the time Harrison came to Iron Lake. Harrison claims he didn’t, and Logan drops it for now.

You Can’t Escape the Past

Angela sits outside when she has a revelation. She heads into the station where she calls Batista and asks him if he remembers anything about the Bay Harbor Butcher. She adds that some deaths in Iron Lake have similar MOs. Then she asks if Batista thinks that Doakes really was BHB. He admits he thought that at first and mentions that there were other theories swirling around, including how LaGuerta thought it was Dexter. Batista still believes Dexter is dead, so Angela sends him a photo of her and Dexter. When Batista asks if Dexter’s really alive, Angela tells him that Dexter’s in a holding cell. She then asks if she can have LaGuerta’s information. Batista reveals she was killed. When Angela asks if they caught the killer, Batista doesn’t hear it, instead pulling out a file about LaGuerta and saying he’ll be in Iron Lake by the morning.

In her office, Angela talks to Dexter again. She admits the case about Matt may not hold up, but she’s still willing to bet everything that Dexter is a murderer. She brings up the ketamine purchase along with showing Dexter a photo of Miles. Dexter claims he couldn’t have done anything because they were both in the station, until Angela reminds him what got them there. Next, she shows him Jasper’s body and the injection mark. Dexter still tries to worm out of it until she shows him a similar mark on a BHB victim. She knows he’s BHB. So, Dexter will be arraigned for Matt and then reunite with Batista and be extradited to Florida to stand trial for his BHB crimes. Dexter tells her to shut off the camera. She thinks he’s going to confess, but instead he tells her where to find the missing girls.

Back in the holding cell, Deb has an “I told you so” moment about when Dexter said not killing was the problem. She mentions how Angela won’t give up, and the only reason Deb did is because she was his sister and loved him. After he yells for her to stop, he calls out to Logan for water. Logan sets a bottle on the ledge of the cell door, giving Dexter an opening to grab his arm and bang Logan’s head against the cell. Dexter gets Logan in a chokehold and demands the keys. Logan goes to reach for them but instead goes towards his gun. He gets a shot off just before Dexter breaks his neck, killing him. Dexter grabs the keys and escapes. He calls Harrison to tell him to meet where they found they white buck. Dexter steals Logan’s car and drives off.

Angela goes to Kurt’s cabin and finds the trophy room, recognizing her missing girls plus Molly. When she resurfaces, she radios Logan who (obviously) doesn’t respond. She tries his cell next but nothing. Finally, she reaches Teddy and tells him to call State Troopers, FBI, everyone for all the bodies she just found. She asks if Teddy has heard from Logan. When he says it’s been a while but he’s probably still at the station with Jim, she panics and rushes back, finding Logan’s body and an empty cell.

Father versus Son

Dexter meets Harrison and says they’re going to ditch the truck and go. Harrison notices the blood spatter on Dexter and asks if he is okay. Then he remembers Dexter called from Logan’s phone and pieces it together. Harrison gets angry and mentions the Code. Dexter claims that Logan had die, but Harrison realizes Dexter never really cared about saving people; he just wanted to give in to the Dark Passenger. Dexter tries to tell Harrison they’re the same, but Harrison resists, releasing his anger about being abandoned and the years Dexter never searched for him. Dexter adds that he needs Harrison, who doesn’t want to hear it. He thinks Dexter needs to turn himself in. When Dexter mentions he’d get the death penalty, Harrison says it’s probably what he deserves. So, Dexter stops pushing back and decides to leave, with or without Harrison.

When he turns away, Harrison cocks his rifle, asking if Rita and Deb would still be alive if it weren’t for Dexter. This prompts Dexter to remember the people who died because of him – Logan, Rita, Deb, Harry, LaGuerta, Doakes, and Lundy. He agrees that Harrison is right. But all Harrison wants to be is normal. Dexter says Harrison deserves better and a better father. After a beat, he reminds Harrison to turn the safety off; this is the only way out. So, Harrison does it as Dexter shows him where to shoot. Harrison aims. Before Harrison pulls the trigger, Dexter’s voiceover reveals that he’s never felt real love until now. Harrison shoots. As blood pools around Dexter, he tells Harrison he did good. Deb grips his hand and as she lets go, Dexter dies.

A New Beginning

Angela arrives at the scene. Harrison mentions Logan and offers his wrists to be handcuffed. Instead, Angela gives him money and tells him how to get out of town; he needs to leave and never come back. Then, she calls it in and wipes Harrison’s prints off the gun.

Before Harrison drives away, he pulls out the letter Dexter sent to Hannah. As he heads out of town, we hear voiceover of Dexter reading it. In the letter, he explains that he just wants Harrison to live a happy and normal life, which he can’t do if Dexter is around. Dexter continues that it would’ve been better if the hurricane did kill him, because then he wouldn’t have to carry the burden of everything he’s done. However, he knows he must carry it alone. He emphasizes not to contact him unless Harrison begins to show dark tendencies, saying, “I beg you. Let me die so my son can live.”

Jason Sudeikis Wins Golden Globe Award for ‘Ted Lasso’

The 79th annual Golden Globe Awards are here, set to honor some of the best in film and television in 2021. Following the ongoing controversy around the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization ended up hosting a private event this year, rather than the normal televised, celebrity-filled evening that audiences have come to expect.

Apple TV+’s critically acclaimed comedy series Ted Lasso was nominated for four awards this evening and ultimately won one: Jason Sudeikis for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.

Sudeikis portrays the lead character of the show, Ted Lasso, a man with a heart of gold, a mustache of steel, a pocket full of snappy one-liners, and a killer sneaker collection. Since the show premiered, Sudeikis’ Ted and his optimistic “Believe” slogan have skyrocketed to pop culture phenomenon status, inspiring fans across the world to spread positivity and bake biscuits in his honor.

Given the outstanding success of both seasons thus far (check out our season 2 review!), it comes as no surprise that Ted Lasso continues to be a staple nominee across award shows as of late. If you’ve yet to watch, make sure to peruse our top five reasons why you need to watch this show right now.

Ted Lasso also stars Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, Jeremy Swift, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster, Nick Mohammed, and more.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Ted Lasso are now streaming exclusively on Apple TV+, and a third season is on the way. In case you missed it, a hilariously festive animated short “The Missing Christmas Mustache,” was released last month.

‘The High Republic: The Fallen Star’ Review: An Epic, Heartbreaking End to Phase I

More than a year ago, The High Republic Era came to be in a galaxy far, far away. Now, the final adult installment, The Fallen Star, is out for readers to enjoy (and by enjoy, I mean cry uncontrollably while clutching a stuffed bantha for moral support).

Written by Claudia Gray, The Fallen Star follows the aftermath of the deadly Republic Fair depicted in The Rising Storm. The Republic is recovering after the Nihil caused havoc on the planet Valo, and the Jedi believe they’ve reduced the threat of the anarchist group. Thus, where the story begins.

A lot happens in The Fallen Star — heartbreak, sabotage, an unknown disturbance in the Force, and much more that will make you audibly gasp as you read. It’s a great ending to the epic storytelling in this first phase of the elaborate publishing campaign.

There are a lot of past characters who play a role in this story. In order to fully understand each character and how they got to where they are, readers need to not only read the previous two adult novels in Phase I (Light of the Jedi and The Rising Storm), but also the young adult books (Into the Dark and Out of the Shadows) as well. When you know the characters well, the events that take place are much more impactful.

While reading, there were moments when I would catch myself scratching my head. At times, I felt like many of the characters were acting out of character. For example, Stellan Gios was extremely prideful and Orla Jareni had bouts of anger, which I didn’t get while reading the previous books. However, I should’ve trusted the incredible High Republic team. There was a reason for this, and it moved the story along and progressed the many obstacles the Jedi face throughout the novel.

The pacing of The Fallen Star is fun and very exciting. It starts off calm and progresses into intense, high-stakes moments throughout the story. I was on the edge of my seat from the middle of the book to the very last page. I kept wanting to know what happens next, which for me is a big indicator that a book is well-written and the story is intriguing.

However, amid all the chaos and intensity, there are calm and touching moments that really help give readers a bit of a breather, specifically scenes between Bell and Burryaga. Their incredibly pure friendship makes you forget about the hardships the characters are experiencing.

My biggest (and only) complaint is how often the point-of-view switches. All of the characters perspectives are easy to follow, but they change too often for me. A few paragraphs per character isn’t enough to fully grasp what is happening and what they’re feeling. And in my opinion, some of the perspectives didn’t even need to be there. For example, Avar Kriss. She only had a handful of moments in her point-of-view. We easily could’ve done without hers without compromising the story and her relationship with Elzar and Stellan. Her scenes felt like they were only thrown in there because she’s such a huge character in the bigger story.

Overall, The Fallen Star is an incredible book that will give you so much joy and satisfaction while also ripping your heart out. Claudia Gray does a great job pouring so much action and emotion into the story without overwhelming the readers. A great end to a great Phase I.

The High Republic: The Fallen Star is now available. You can buy it on Amazon or anywhere you get books.

The start of Phase II of The High Republic is set to be released in October 2022. Stick with Nerds & Beyond for more Star Wars: The High Republic news and reviews.

Why ‘Roadfood’ Should Be On Your Current Watchlist

0

Roadfood: Discovering America One Dish at A Time, hosted by Misha Collins (Supernatural, Encounter), has only been on air for about a month and a half. However, in that short time, it’s already managed to garner quite a loyal fanbase — despite the initial hubbub concerning where to watch. Today, we’re exploring what makes PBS’s latest food-related endeavor a great programming choice and why Roadfood should currently be on your watchlist.

Mouth-Watering Food

Of course, I can’t write this article without mentioning the food, can I? It’s called Roadfood for a reason. As he details in the show’s opening sequence, Collins is keeping the legacy that Roadfood founders Jane and Michael Stern worked so hard to build alive by carrying on their mission. Traveling all over the USA, Collins has set out on his latest journey to uncover the myriad of regional food dishes found across the country. You can read more about Roadfood’s history here.

As he and the crew traverse the continental United States, Collins delves into both well and little-known regional dishes from different areas, uncovering the traditions and history behind them along the way. The heterogeneity of American culinary tradition isn’t just demonstrated by the sheer variety of locations and dishes showcased. Throughout episodes, viewers find that there are even nuanced variations within the specific region being featured. Whether that be different sauce combinations, preparation styles, or that secret something that restauranteurs are loathe to give up too easily, there’s variety to be found everywhere you look.

These culinary staples aren’t just traditional American foods. While there are some dishes that are part of the traditional American food culture like barbeque and fried chicken, there are also unique combinations of old and new as traditional foods from other parts of the world are integrated with the American style. One early example of this is the Viet-Cajun-style crawfish from episode 1 set in Houston, TX. From soul food to cajun delicacies like gumbo to tripe tacos, there’s always an abundance of mouth-watering dishes being presented on your screen.

The shots of these delicious-looking dishes will have you wanting to reach through the screen to grab some for yourself. You can see the passion the restauranteurs have for their craft, and that devotion clearly translates to the food. While viewers can’t taste it (bummer), sensory inputs like the crunch of the first bite of fried chicken, the vibrant hues of color from a fresh garden-picked salad, or the crew’s praise are enough to make your mouth water. Luckily, Roadfood’s website also provides lists of the restaurants the crew visits. Recipes from the niche dishes put on display are also found as a part of the show’s extra content on the website.

Connecting With People From All Walks of Life

But more than just showcasing the delectable-looking dishes themselves, food serves a secondary purpose on Roadfood. Collins has repeatedly admitted that food is simply the vehicle the show uses to get at something deeper. The show’s real goal is to promote tolerance, understanding, and insight into the cultural circumstances that cultivate ideological viewpoints.

Interspersed between checking out local food joints, Collins takes the time to seek out conversations with various community members. These people’s occupations differ, ranging from local restauranteurs to governmental figures and community activists to local artists. While these conversations do cover the local food scene, they also cover a myriad of other topics. From connecting the roots of soul food in the North to the Great Migration and African culture to learning of Vietnamese-American immigrants’ experiences mass migrating to Houston, TX, thought-provoking conversations are had in every episode.

These topics are not always easy to cover. Racial justice, food inequity, gun violence, political loyalties, and cultural legacy are all examples of heavy, but important topics that Collins navigates with locals. These conversations could easily become melancholy. However, Collins’ approach to these conversations, coming from a place of respect and a yearning to truly understand the things people encounter in their lives, and community members’ extensive pride and knowledge in their cultures leaves viewers with a sense of better understanding and unity. Throughout all of these different experiences the show shines a light on, common threads of the human experience are clearly able to be seen everywhere you look.

That’s not to say that there aren’t lighthearted moments as well. Zooming around a racetrack with the crew, (sweatily) helping traditionally pit-roast ingredients for a dish, and polka dancing are only a few of the extra activities that have been undertaken so far. Collins never fails to find some type of shenanigans to get into on his travels. These moments aren’t only fun for viewers, but seem to foster a sense of camaraderie and respect between the host and the people being showcased, better paving the way for those deep conversations.

Increasing Cultural Competency

The two previously described aspects of the show combine to showcase the cultures in these regions in a more complete way. Viewers don’t just get to see how regional dishes and culinary traditions shape the community. They get depth. They get to experience art, language, and how the community interacts and supports one another. America is a melting pot; just about anywhere you travel, you can encounter a variety of communities and cultures, and Roadfood is doing a great job of showcasing that diversity.

From the vibrant community-centric streets of Little Dominica, you learn about the niche pocket of Latinx culture that’s been carved out in Manhattan. From Barberton, you learn of the town’s industrial history and how that’s made Midwestern work ethic one of the community’s core values. From the streets of Detroit, you see how community activists are shaping a new culture of urban revival and food justice while sticking to their cultural roots. Viewers are constantly bombarded with facets of regional culture from the past, present, and future, increasing their knowledge of customs, traditions, and heritage that they might not encounter in their everyday lives. The show perfectly aligns with the core mission of PBS, “using media to educate, inspire, entertain and express a diversity of perspectives” and “[empowering] individuals to achieve their potential and strengthen the social, democratic, and cultural health of the U.S.”

Roadfood manages to strike that perfect balance of serious and intriguingly fun, taking viewers on a ride they’re loathe to get off. Watching the show is like being on a road trip of your own, cruising America’s backroads and seeing all the different aspects of life this vast and diverse country has to offer. And the best part is, you can do it all from the comfort of your home. While every food show is going to have a somewhat similar premise, Roadfood is doing a great job of setting itself apart by digging deeper than just the food itself, and I think that’s what’s endeared its fans to it so quickly and wholeheartedly.

Roadfood‘s first season may be halfway done, but there’s still much more to learn from its remaining six episodes. We can’t wait to see what new dishes, people, and experiences Collins and the crew encounter on the rest of their journey this season. Roadfood is available to watch in a variety of ways depending on your region. To find out your options, check out our article detailing ways to watch.  As always, check out our other content related to the show here, Roadfood’s website for additional behind-the-scenes content and other information, and stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
