The first trailer has been released for Cyrano, MGM Studios’ adaptation of the classic tale starring Peter Dinklage. The new film is directed by Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice, Atonement) and also features Haley Bennett, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Bashir Salahuddin, and Ben Mendelsohn.
Cyrano follows the titular hero, who is in love with Roxanne. He doesn’t have the courage to tell her his feelings due to his belief that society will never accept someone like him being with someone as beautiful her (in the original tale, he has a large nose, while in this version, it is his size that he sees as the obstacle). When she falls for the handsome Christian without speaking to him, Christian seeks out poet Cyrano to give him a voice that will woo Roxanne. It’s Christian’s face but Cyrano’s wit, and as time goes on, Cyrano and Christian realize Roxanne will need to choose between them.
The film is based on the stage musical Cyrano, which also starred Dinklage and Bennett, who reprises her role in the film as Roxanne. The script was written by Dinklage’s wife Erica Schmidt (who also penned the stage show) and will contain original songs by The National.
Cyrano will be released in theaters December 31. You can watch the trailer below!
