Peter Dinklage and the Actors Fund To Be Honored at the Gotham Awards
Actor Peter Dinklage will receive a Performer Tribute and The Actors Fund will receive the Gotham Impact Salute during the 2021 Gotham Awards Ceremony. A full list of nominees can be found here. The ceremony is taking place live and in person on Monday, November 29, 2021 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
The Gotham Film & Media Institute event unofficially begins the movie awards show season that will eventually conclude with the Oscars on March 27.
Dinklage is in great company: Kristen Stewart (Spencer, Happiest Season) is also a Performer Award nominee this year. Other tribute nominees include Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog), who is receiving the Directors Tribute, Eamonn Bowles (Splinter, Jiro Dreams of Sushi), who is receiving the Industry Tribute, and the cast of Netflix’s The Harder They Fall who are getting the Ensemble Tribute.
A much-beloved actor, Dinklage has been a constant in Hollywood for many years. He gained his first accolade as a leading man in the 2003 movie The Station Agent. The film brought him Screen Actors Guild and Independent Spirit Award nominations, among others. One of his most memorable roles, however, is that of Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones. He starred in the series from its premiere in 2011 right through to its finale in 2019. During that time, he won four Emmy Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award, among other tributes. Dinklage also won a Screen Actors Guild Award with the ensemble cast of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Most recently, Dinklage has starred in Cyrano. The film is based on a play by Erica Schmidt, which Dinklage also starred in, and has received rave reviews. The movie releases on December 21, 2021, after initially premiering at the 48th Telluride Film Festival back in September. His other famed works include Reed Morano’s I Think We’re Alone Now opposite Elle Fanning, which he also produced and which won the Special Jury Prize for Excellence in Filmmaking at the Sundance Film Festival; the all-star X-Men: Days of Future Past; Avengers: Infinity War; Mark Palansky’s Rememory, with Anton Yelchin, and many more.
Dinklage’s extensive theater credits include A Month in the Country, for the Classic Stage Company; Things We Want, with The New Group, for which he received a Drama League Award nomination; the world premiere of Knickerbocker, at the Williamstown Theatre Festival; and the title roles in Richard III, Uncle Vanya, and Cyrano.
Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute, said:
“The roots of Peter Dinklage’s extraordinary career are firmly grounded in independent film. As his work has grown in major features and TV shows to reach audiences everywhere, Peter has remained a steadfast supporter of this community of independent artists, bringing so many iconic characters to life through his powerful, captivating, and often hilarious performances. Cyrano puts Peter’s full range as an actor on display. We are thrilled to recognize this most treasured performer who has won the hearts of audiences across the world as part of this year’s celebration.”
The Actors Fund will also be honored at The Gotham Awards for its work providing leadership, resources, and financial support during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly during the lockdown in 2020 in which much of the New York industry shuttered.
Since the pandemic began the fund has provided more than $23.9 million in assistance to more than 17,100 people in need. The Fund serves everyone in film, theater, television, music, opera, radio, and dance with programs including social services and emergency financial assistance, health care and insurance counseling, housing, and secondary employment and training services.
Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute, stated:
“There are few organizations in our industry that play such a pivotal role in lifting up and supporting so many performing arts and entertainment professionals by offering a wide array of essential services while addressing a variety of challenges faced by workers of all backgrounds. We are honored to recognize their incredible work supporting the many people who keep us entertained.”
