Catherine Zeta-Jones, who we recently loved in Prodigal Son, will be gracing our screens again soon thanks to Disney+.

The streamer is revisiting fan favorite National Treasure films in the form of a new series, with Zeta-Jones and Lisette Olivera as the show’s leads and Jerry Bruckheimer, the films’ producer, back as executive producer.

Set to expand on the films’ universe, the show explores the life of young heroine Jess (Olivera), a DREAMer in search of answers about her family, as she embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about the past and save a lost Pan-American treasure. Her path crosses with Billie (Zeta-Jones), a badass billionaire, black-market antiquities expert, and treasure hunter who transformed herself from a penniless orphan to a shrewd, stylish businesswoman and adventurer. Both women want the Pan-American treasure, but for Billie the treasure has deeper stakes than just money.

Zeta-Jones joins Olivera and other previously announced series regulars including Lyndon Smith, Zuri Reed, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano and Jordan Rodrigues.

Days before he’s due to showcase his work in a performance that could launch his career or destroy it, Jon is feeling the pressure from everywhere, especially those close to him. ‘Dune’ Scores 10 Oscar Nominations

0

The highly anticipated list of nominees for the 94th Academy Awards has finally been announced, and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune was one of the most prolific films in the list, scoring a total of 10 nominations. Dune has been recognized in the following categories:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Music (Original Score)
  • Best Sound
  • Best Costume Design
  • Best Makeup and Hairstyling
  • Best Production Design
  • Best Visual Effects

A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence — a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential — only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

In addition to Chalamet, the film also boasts an all-star cast that includes Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Chang Chen, David Dastmalchian, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

Dune comes from Frank Herbert’s critically acclaimed 1965 sci-fi novel, and the robust and complex source material has proven to be notoriously difficult to translate to the screen over the years. However, Villeneuve managed to finally crack the code, pulling off a brilliantly epic adaptation (which makes it surprising to see his name left off from today’s nominations for Best Director).

Dune only covers the first half of Herbert’s book, and thus a sequel was confirmed shortly after the film landed in theaters. Part two is currently slated for October 2023. In the meantime, Legendary Comics will soon be releasing an official graphic novel adaptation of the film.

Netflix’s ‘The Power of the Dog’ Nominated for 12 Oscars

Jane Campion’s Netflix hit The Power of the Dog has been nominated for 12 Oscars!

The film has been nabbing gold left and right this awards season, and now it’s time to see if it can take home the biggest prize in Hollywood. Jane Campion’s adapted screenplay of the 1967 novel of the same name by Thomas Savage follows the Burbank brothers, Phil and George, in the 1920s after they take over their family ranch in Montana. When George suddenly marries a widow and brings her and her son to live on the ranch, Phil is hellbent on making her life misery, but there was an unexpected eye watching carefully over her. A tale of toxic masculinity and what lurks beneath the sadist Phil’s tough exterior led to a surprise twist ending that no one saw coming.

Its nominations include:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director – Jane Campion
  • Best Actor – Benedict Cumberbatch
  • Best Supporting Actress – Kirsten Dunst
  • Best Supporting Actor – Jesse Plemons
  • Best Supporting Actor – Kodi Smit-McPhee
  • Best Adapted Screenplay
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Original Score
  • Best Sound
  • Best Production Design

This marks the first Oscar nomination for Dunst after a long, illustrious Hollywood career, as well as a first for Oscars newcomers Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Benedict Cumberbatch has now been nominated twice, his first coming for the Alan Turing biopic, The Imitation Game, in 2015. Jane Campion looks to make history as the first woman director to be nominated twice and the first woman to win both Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay. Her win for Best Original Screenplay and nomination for Best Director came in 1994 for The Piano. Should Campion nab the Best Director win, she’d only be the third woman in history to do so. Campion is highly expected to nab both the nomination and wins in both of those categories this year.

The Power of the Dog is streaming exclusively on Netflix.

Netflix’s ‘Don’t Look Up’ Nominated for Four Oscars!

Whether you decide to look up or not, Adam McKay’s apocalyptic dark comedy Don’t Look Up has nabbed four Oscar nominations.

McKay’s controversial comedy centered around the “anti-science” wave plaguing America, and the world, as it explored the potentially disastrous situation of a planet-killing asteroid hurtling its way towards Earth. With Meryl Streep playing an eerily Trump-like US President, and Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as our scientific team ready to do what it takes to save the planet, the cast was stacked with impressive names.

Its nominations include:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Original Screenplay
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Original Score

McKay is no stranger to the Oscars, being nominated in multiple categories in 2019 for Vice and 2016 for The Big Short, winning Best Adapted Screenplay in 2016.

Garfield will go up against Javier Bardem, Benedict Cumberbatch, Will Smith, and Denzel Washington for Best Performance by a Leading Actor.

Garfield has received increasing attention in the last couple of months since the movie’s premiere on Netflix on November 12, 2021, due to his performance as the late Larson. Audiences and critics alike seem to agree that Garfield not only delivered an impressive performance in his first musical but that he was able to embody Larson in such a beautiful and impactful way. Garfield delivered an emotionally moving performance consistent with his history in the industry, and clearly, awards season is off to a great start in proving that. It has been highly demanded anticipated that Garfield would be nominated for his first Oscar award since the movie has gained traction.
