‘Dune’ Scores 10 Oscar Nominations

The highly anticipated list of nominees for the 94th Academy Awards has finally been announced, and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune was one of the most prolific films in the list, scoring a total of 10 nominations. Dune has been recognized in the following categories:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Music (Original Score)
  • Best Sound
  • Best Costume Design
  • Best Makeup and Hairstyling
  • Best Production Design
  • Best Visual Effects

A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence — a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential — only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

In addition to Chalamet, the film also boasts an all-star cast that includes Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Chang Chen, David Dastmalchian, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

Dune comes from Frank Herbert’s critically acclaimed 1965 sci-fi novel, and the robust and complex source material has proven to be notoriously difficult to translate to the screen over the years. However, Villeneuve managed to finally crack the code, pulling off a brilliantly epic adaptation (which makes it surprising to see his name left off from today’s nominations for Best Director).

Dune only covers the first half of Herbert’s book, and thus a sequel was confirmed shortly after the film landed in theaters. Part two is currently slated for October 2023. In the meantime, Legendary Comics will soon be releasing an official graphic novel adaptation of the film.
