Jensen Ackles, one of the stars of Supernatural, was on LIVE with Kelly and Ryan this morning. Amidst teasing from Ripa about when he and his wife, Danneel, would add a fourth child, Ackles spent some time talking about the origin of his children’s names.
After a commercial break, viewers were treated to a preview of Season 14 of Supernatural where Dean Winchester’s vessel is occupied by the archangel Michael. Once the clip aired, Ackles explained how difficult it was for him to play Michael instead of Dean. After Ripa comments on how the show still feels so fresh, Ackles explains why he thinks that is.
I’ve never played this character that you just saw… You show up to the same set, you show up, you see all the same faces. And those are all things that kind of instinctively get you into that character. And now they’re saying, ‘Go there, and be completely different.’ And it proved to be a little bit more difficult than I anticipated. You’re in this setting, and it’s like, ‘Okay, it’s time to play Dean.’ You want to be that character that you know so well, and then you have to fight those instincts in order to make this character happen. So it was a challenge!”
Though the whole video is not uploaded, you can watch the first segment on the LIVE with Ryan and Kelly website here.
Don’t forget, Season 14 of Supernatural premieres on Thursday, October 11!
Disney fans, get ready for some changes to your ticket buying experience coming October 16.
It was announced last week that starting in October, guests can now plan their vacations on DisneyWorld.com through a new online vacation planning service and purchase tickets priced depending on the day you choose to visit. Disney hopes that this service will simplify the booking experience, provide more in-depth ticketing information, disperse the visitation of tourists throughout the year, and make Disney dreams come true.
This new vacation planning system offers park overviews, suggestions and travel tips for all your Disney needs. This helps make it more personalized to allow guests to make better decisions regarding their vacation. When guests go to purchase their tickets, a calendar of the year will pop up showing the prices for different times and even show lower ticket prices during non-peak months.
Here’s a link to a video showing how it works:
Guests will also be able to manage their plans through the My Disney Experience mobile app, where they can access the interactive calendar and purchase their tickets on the go.

A new trailer for the next film in the X-Men series has been released! Dark Phoenix will be released February 14, 2019. The film will follow the journey of Jean Grey as her powers start to increase and corrupt her turning her into the Dark Phoenix.
The film stars Jennifer Lawrence (Raven), James McAvoy (Professor Charles Xavier), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Alexandra Shipp (Ororo Munroe), Michael Fassbender (Erik Lehnsherr) and Tye Sheridan (Scott Summers).
It picks up after the X-Men Apocalypse film, where we got the first glimpse of Jean channeling the Phoenix power. It looks like the film will be emotional with the X-Men having to make choices involving Jean and the safety of people and Jeans emotions for hurting her family. It looks like they go to space, we get to see Jean as a kid, Charles hiding things (again) and a possible death?
Big news! Louden Swain just released the album cover for their next highly-anticipated acoustic album, titled Splitting The Seams. The album is set to release October 26, with all brand new acoustic arrangements from some of their most popular songs, as well as a few new additions.
So far, we know that the following songs will be on their acoustic album:
Overachiver
CA Nation
Too Far Away (new song)
Rock Song
Silverspoon
All I Need
Big One
Mama’s Jam
This isn’t the complete list, but just a few ones that the band mentioned and played at Once Upon A Canyon Night. In our interview with the band last month, they also teased that another new song would make the cut, stating, “There will be one more original song on the album that we recorded and worked out in the studio which you may have all heard before. We’ll give you a clue…it’s in a movie written by and starring Rob.”
If you’ve missed it, we’re also doing a whole series on the band leading up to the release of the new album.

SPOILER ALERT!
This article contains multiple spoilers about the character Gabriel (Richard Speight, Jr.) and of Supernatural Season 13.
After Gabriel’s final confrontation with Lucifer that resulted in his death all the way back in season five, the fate of the trickster-archangel seemed solidified. A sizeable section of the fandom was convinced that Gabriel somehow managed to fake his death and was still living in the Supernatural universe somewhere, waiting to be reintroduced into the show’s continuity.
Yet, years passed, and while fans were graced with Gabriel’s “return” in Season 9’s “Meta Fiction” and Richard Speight, Jr. joined the crew behind-the-scenes in directing some phenomenal episodes for the show, the canonical return of Gabriel did not appear to be within reach.
That all changed this season when it was revealed that Gabriel had indeed faked his death at the hands of Lucifer, but had spent several years in captivity and drained of his celestial powers. While Season 13 ultimately ends with Gabriel being fatally stabbed by one of his brothers, this season really explores Gabriel’s character in a way the fandom has not seen since the fifth season.
Let’s take a look at Gabriel’s five biggest moments in Supernatural Season 13.
“Devil’s Bargain” – Episode 13
Richard Speight, Jr. as Gabriel in Season 13 of Supernatural – Courtesy of Warner Bros./The CW
After Arthur Ketch reports to the Prince of Hell, Asmodeus, of his failure to kill Lucifer, Asmodeus agrees with the consensus that Lucifer would not be an easy target to kill. He reveals to Ketch that he is in possession of an archangel blade, a weapon that would surely kill Lucifer; however, only archangels can wield an archangel blade.
Asmodeus answers this predicament by leading Ketch to a cell, and unveils Gabriel as the occupant, battered and bruised and with his mouth sewn shut, but alive.
Why is this significant?
Many rejoiced at this small yet impactful moment within the Supernatural community. From the hashtag #GabrieLives on social media (supported by Richard Speight, Jr. himself!) to a multitude of metas created online, and stemming from a fandom in which many characters come back to life at one point or another, many were in disbelief and in denial that Gabriel was truly dead. A beloved fan favorite, his return brought joy to a large part of the Supernatural family!
Aside from reintroducing Gabriel’s character back into the storyline, the interesting detail of depicting Gabriel with his mouth sewn shut ties his character back to his dual-personality, Loki. In Norse mythology, Loki is portrayed in a story with his mouth sewn shut. This detail is the first to highlight the importance of Loki’s character not only within Gabriel, but also within this season.
“Bring ’em Back Alive” – Episode 18
Richard Speight, Jr. as Gabriel (left) and Misha Collins as Castiel (right) in Season 13 of Supernatural – Courtesy of Warner Bros./The CW
Having spent nearly two full episodes withdrawn into his mind and cowering in fear, Gabriel finally emerged out of his catatonic state following an intervention by Sam. In an attempt to power Gabriel back up, Sam and Castiel gave Gabriel the last of their archangel grace. He had only been present for a short while before the bunker was infiltrated by Asmodeus and his goons, who overpowered Sam and Castiel and forcefully retrieved Gabriel. In the hands of his captor once again and still powerless, Gabriel was overwhelmed with fear.
However, Gabriel’s powers flare up at the nick of time, and he immediately overpowers the demons holding him. Asmodeus attempts to restrain him using his own powers – which had been amplified by Gabriel’s stolen grace – yet Gabriel easily evades it and only smirks as he incinerates his former abuser.
ASMODEUS: Gabriel! What are you doin’, son? You know too well what I can do to you. I broke you!
ASMODEUS: You’re too weak!
GABRIEL: Not anymore. Oh, by the way, I always hated that dumbass suit.
Why is this significant?
This is Gabriel fighting back against his abuser, against someone who had held him hostage, stolen his source of power for his own gain, and had tortured him for years. Gabriel facing Asmodeus with his head held high, his archangel wings flaring out in the shadows behind him, is such a powerful moment in many ways.
This is also the first time we get to see a glimpse of Gabriel’s true capabilities as an archangel, one of Heaven’s fiercest weapons. In seasons prior, his demeanor – and as a result, his powers manifested in his tricks – was presented in a playful manner, though at times he hinted at a much powerful being than what was being proven.
In this scene, Gabriel brings forth that potential that had been hinted at and has no mercy. We get to see him destroy his abuser in an unapologetic manner, and grin while doing so.
“Unfinished Business” – Episode 20
Jensen Ackles as Dean (left), Richard Speight, Jr. as Gabriel (center) and Jared Padalecki as Sam (right) in Season 13 of Supernatural – Courtesy of Warner Bros./The CW
This entire episode was a wonderful exploration of Gabriel’s character and of his story, particularly following his faked death after “Hammer of the Gods.” We learn that after he flees from the bunker at the end of “Bring ‘em Back Alive,” Gabriel begins hunting down those responsible for selling him to Asmodeus: Loki – the real Loki – and his three children. In an enraged monologue delivered to Sam and Dean, Gabriel unleashes the depths of how his time with Asmodeus has affected him.
GABRIEL: Every day, Asmodeus tortured me. Every… day! He fed off my grace for years! He used me, he debased me until I was… What I went through… you don’t forgive. Everyone who had a hand in it will die. Get me?
Why is this significant?
This scene demonstrates the human side of Gabriel. In Supernatural canon, angels are not meant to feel or relate to any emotions present in humanity. This of course changes, particularly with the character growth of Castiel throughout the seasons; however, Gabriel is especially empathetic to human emotions, and it is here where he falls into the need for revenge.
This gives us a clearer insight into what Gabriel went through and how horrendously it has affected him. From the fury in his voice to the tiny lip wobble as he struggles to regain his composure, Gabriel draws us into his pain almost effortlessly.
“Exodus” – Episode 22
Richard Speight, Jr. as Gabriel(left), Alexander Calvert as Jack (center) and Mark Pellegrino as Lucifer (right) in Season 13 of Supernatural – Courtesy of Warner Bros./The CW
Gabriel and Lucifer clearly were not on the best of terms – “killing” your younger brother might do that to a relationship. In this scene, Lucifer argues with Gabriel about his ability to be a good and genuine father to Jack. This conversation segues into a confrontation of Lucifer’s character and of humanity, which is reminiscent of what these two argued about back in “Hammer of the Gods.”
GABRIEL: Dude, it’s me. I’ve known you since the stars were made. You can’t change. You’re incapable of empathy or love. You live to be worshipped or feared. Or both.
LUCIFER: Okay. I–I see that you’ve — you’ve drunk the Kool-Aid. Fine.
GABRIEL: Oh, is this the part where you tell me that, uh, Dad made up all those so-called lies about you? Got it.
LUCIFER Yeah! Yeah, Pop locked me up, okay?
GABRIEL: Don’t you get it? Humans were innocent and beautiful. But you…you couldn’t stand that the old man loved them more than He loved you. So you tempted them and corrupted them just to prove how flawed they were.
Why is this significant?
This scene reiterates everything that Gabriel once stood for about humanity, and it reveals that he still advocates for it. Back in “Hammer of the Gods,” he claimed that he was not on Lucifer’s side or Michael’s, but that he was on “theirs” – the side of people. It demonstrates just how deeply his love for humans runs, and how he was the angel – aside from Castiel – that followed his father’s wishes.
“Exodus” – Episode 22
Richard Speight, Jr. as Gabriel, Mark Pellegrino as Lucifer, Jensen Ackles as Dean and Jared Padalecki as Sam in Season 13 of Supernatural – Courtesy of Warner Bros./The CW
As the Winchesters, the angels, and the survivors of the Alternate world were making their way through the rift, the group’s escape is impeded by the arrival of Michael. Lucifer attempts to fight him off first, but is overpowered. Michael looks up and is surprised by the sight of Gabriel. Gabriel turns to the Winchesters and claims he is going to hold Michael off, giving them a chance to escape.
GABRIEL: Go. I can buy some time.
SAM: Gabriel, don’t.
GABRIEL: All I did on Earth was run. I’m not running any more.
Moments later in the fight with Michael, Gabriel is stabbed through the chest with an archangel blade, and is killed.
Why is this significant?
Once more, we see Gabriel standing up for what he believes in. He acknowledges that he ran from his problems rather than facing them, and he refuses to do the same here. It is here that he once again places his trust in the Winchesters, and fights Michael to give them a chance at escape. This ends with Gabriel stabbed and killed by his older brother (alternate though he may be).
The impact that Gabriel’s death left on the fandom, especially after a short time of having him back, was devastating.

Natasha (@NatashaCole): “I love the interview they did with Nerds and Beyond with Jason Manns.”
Em (@invisible_heir): “Definitely the Nerds and Beyond one!”
Sam (@honeybeemish): “I really loved the interview you guys did with Swain and Jason in January of this year. It was super relaxed and entertaining.”
Sarah (@wyldefandom): “Any interview they are in is my favourite, but I’d say the interview they did with Nerds and Beyond. It’s enjoyable to watch their expressions and see how excited they get when they nerd out over Star Wars and music.”
Emma (@simplyreflected): “This one is my favourite because the questions asked in there are some that I don’t think get asked very often. I also love that it’s in such a relaxed environment and it just seems like a normal conversation rather than an interview. It also sounds like everyone was having fun during this.”
Billy’s Snapchat Story of Louden Swain & Jason Manns Playing Rock, Paper, Scissors
Dean (@ChucksVessel): “Billy’s Snapchat Story of the Rock Paper Scissors incident!”
Sarah (@SharksandSwain): “The video Billy posted of Rob, Stephen, Mike, and Jason deciding who gets what room for their Atlanta tour stop cracks me up SO much. I watched it just after my plane landed in ATL and I was absolutely dying trying to hold in my laughter. I watch it whenever I’m feeling down because I will never not laugh.”
“Medicated” – Jacksonville 2016
Amanda (@AmandaC0124): “When the kazoos were introduced for the first time in Jacksonville. When rob realised what was going on his reaction was so genuine and he was so excited.”
Stacy (@LoveandSwain): “I have to go with SNS from Jaxcon ’16. It was the 1st time people brought kazoo to the show. It was also the 1st time everyone held up lights during She Waits. The looks on the guys faces for both of those was priceless. I wasn’t there, but I definitely had goosebumps watching the videos. It without a doubt changed the face of all future shows.”
Vendor Room Jam – Chicago 2018
Mary (@pare6386): “I am biased as I was there, but the acoustic performance from ChiCon 2018 was pretty amazing.”
Rachael (@NessaNight): “I really enjoy the jam sessions at the conventions.”
Karyl (@karylannegeary): “My favorite video is their performance from Chicago Con in 2018. It’s the only time I’ve been able to see them live (so far!) so rewatching it reminds me of how special and life changing it was.”
Dickchat/Robchat/Hickchat
Kelli (@klairermusic1): “Honestly I think my favorite videos from the band come out of the dickchat/hickchat/robchat series. It is fun to see the guys just being themselves and goofing off. Plus, Billy’s hickchat was freaking hilarious! Mike being put in the box was great too! Rob tries so hard to get Rich back and it is wonderful.”
Brandy (@horrorlovingirl): “Does Billy’s Snapchat story when Rob has to sleep in the dungeon count?”
Aileen (@fandomfreak221b): “My favorite video has to be all of the Dickchats from Vegascon this year. Not only because I attended that con, but the guys are absolutely hilarious and Billy was amazing with Hickchat. I really hope it happens again next year.”
“She Waits” – Atlanta, 2016
Paige (@lightinmychest): “[She Waits] from Supernatural Atlanta.”
Tiffany (@TiffanyShope1): “2016 Atlanta SNS during She Waits and Rob’s reaction to the lights. You can see on his face how blown away he is and how much it means to him.”
Louden Swain – Suit and Tie EPK
Shaena (@StartoftheAct): “I love watching the Suit and Tie EPK from their YouTube channel.”
Maranda (@maranda_martin): “ALWAYS THE SUIT AND TIE EPK. If you haven’t seen it, you haven’t lived. Go watch it. It’s gold.”
Louden Swain – Stageit Shows
Lynette (@LynetteParki): “I love watching Louden Swain’s Stageit videos. They are in such a relaxed setting and you feel like you get to know the band that much better. They banter and make fun of each other between songs. It’s an aspect of the band you don’t get to experience as much at any of their live concerts.”
“Roll Me Over” – January 2018 in NYC
Tiffany (@TiffanyShope1): “The bra throwing in New York after ‘Roll Me Over’. Rob’s embarrassment, Borja’s comments, Billy’s face and laughter, and Norton with his shrug.”
Chris (@Chris_afec): “This video of ‘Roll Me Over’. Because it’s hysterical, and Mike’s comic timing is exceptional.”
Rob and Billy on “E! News”
Tiffany (@TiffIsWayward): “Rob and Billy did an interview with E! News mostly to promote Kings of Con, but they performed some acoustic versions of a few of their more popular songs, and people watching from home started requesting an acoustic album. True to form, they listened to our requests and an acoustic album is dropping in a few short weeks!”
“With a Little Help From My Friends” – Toronto
Sara (@altsunthinkable): “There are a few different videos of this but I’ll link my own here as it was such an incredible experience getting to be there for this night – celebrating with everyone Rob’s healthy return to Toronto one year after his stroke. That entire night was an experience that no one in that room will ever forget.”
“No Time Like The Present” Album Release Party Stream
Jennifer (@macd1982): “Even though I was actually at the album release party in person, I’m so grateful that they live streamed it too. They made so many people happy, myself included. It’s nice that I can go back and relive that night any time I want to.”
“Amazing” Music Video
Lindsey (@lindseyiam): “I love all of the convention footage in the video for ‘Amazing’. It’s beautifully shot and truly captures the essence of just how captivating it is to see Louden Swain live.”
Veronica (@veronica_bum): “Swain’s music video for ‘Amazing’ that they filmed at their ‘No Time Like The Present’ release party last January has my friends and I in it, so it holds a special place in my heart.”
“Medicated” (Live)
Chris (@Chris_afec): “This version of ‘Medicated’. I don’t know how they kept straight faces, but I will be forever impressed that they did!”
Brittany (@tasteofmyhominy): “The video from the band’s YouTube page from 2009 of them singing ‘Medicated’. Billy and Rob play and sing their way through the song completely straight faced while Borja and Norton pop up intermittently to sing the harmony. I literally was in tears from the laughing so hard the first time I watched it. I love, love, love the humor of the band!!”
Sky Alive EPK
Holly (@AccioAwesome): “I love the Sky Alive EPK video from their YouTube channel. I think it shows their humor and dynamic together very well, and I like the behind-the-scenes info about the album.”
Julieta (@poptartheartt): “The one about the making of Sky Alive.”
Emma (@EmmaV421): “The Sky Alive EPK video, because we got more insight into how the album was made and I think when they let us see the behind the scenes stuff it says something about the level of comfort they share with their fans.”
Vendor Room Jam – SPNUK 2018
Angélique (@Angie_Voyage): “The Jam session of SPN UK, because i was there.”
Muriel (@housecatsswain): “The videos of vendor room jam at conventions. I love seeing these because of the fan’s interaction with them and I just dig the kazoos. I was lucky enough to see the Vendor’s Room at SPNUK and it is one of the best things I had ever seen.”
Supernatural Parody 2 by The Hillywood Show
Gisselle (@lopezado8696): “Honestly, what comes to mind is Hillywood’s recent Supernatural Parody 2 in which the band appears and they’re all dancing!”
Eddie’s Attic – January 2018
Shannon (@reelnerdy): “I love watching some of the videos I took at the Eddie’s Attic show in January 2018 so that I can relive those concerts. One of my favorites is Cool if I Come Over from that concert.”
Saturday Night Special – San Francisco, 2017
Sam (@SwainerSam): “It’s a video from SNS San Francisco 2017 and Rob is talking about these videos he got from Matt of me, Lori and Kit playing Louden Swain Songs out in the hall. You can hear all of our friends scream, ‘SHES RIGHT HERE!!’ Until Rob turns to look at us and thanks us for it, I’m just glad you cant tell from the video how much I’m crying haha.”
Red Room Interview
Sandra (@poptartswain): “The first thing that came to mind was the interview they did at the Red Room some years back. They talk about all things music and are super adorable!”
Scout (@scoutstiel): “I’ve always been fond of the EPK they did for Sky Alive, but as far as specific interviews, that I’m a little fuzzier on. Providing no assistance at all, there is an old interview of them in a bar, where it looks like they were crammed onto a little bench seat to answer questions. I specifically remember this because at one point, Mike Borja mentions that he’d like a mansion with a grand piano.”
Finn (@againsthewave_): “I hope Mike gets his rhinestone grand piano someday.”
Interview at the SPN Convention in Pasadena – 2015
Emily (@fiveafterseven): “There’s a video on Creation Entertainment’s channel from 2015 in which Matt and Osric interview people in the green room. There are some great back and forth banter throughout that is fun, but towards the end of it the band talks about how excited they are to have fans that are so creative and supportive and it’s always nice to feel validated like that.”
Once Upon A Canyon Night
Erika (@soliloquywriter): “I haven’t watched too many videos of Swain, but I’ve taken some at The Study in Los Angeles and at Once Upon a Canyon Night. I like to post one or two videos of the band performing on my YouTube channel, if I am lucky enough to get a good spot, so that other people can watch and enjoy –even if the show is shared online via periscope or something, because sometimes a different angle is nice and might capture a moment between Rob and a fan that they can reflect back upon. That’s always the best.”
“Purple Rain” – Pittsburgh 2016
Kari (@kariface27): “My favorite video of them is when they sang ‘Purple Rain’ with the cast of SPN at a convention. The emotion in that room was palpable through the screen.”
“She Waits” – Toronto 2013
Jenna (@sushiswain): “My favorite isn’t the entire band, but Rob singing ‘She Waits’ at his panel at TorCon 2013. I know for many people who were there, it was their first time hearing him sing, and it’s a goosebumps-inducing moment given what happened later that evening.”
Stephen Norton & Mark Sheppard “Dual Drummers”
Judy (@JayeEmm): “I’m a fan of Mark Sheppard and Norton’s dual drumming on ‘Whipping Post’ – I’ll always watch a video of that song if I come across it.”
Louden Swain “Intros” from Conventions
Amanda (@BandagedLetdown): “There are two types of videos from conventions that never fail to make me laugh, one being the intros and outros; it’s always so amazing to see the versatility of their talent. They aren’t just good at one or two types of songs, they’re amazing at ALL genres. The second, is during J2 panels when Jared makes a joke hoping for a rimshot from Stephen, only to be rejected.”
Saturday Night Special
Charlotte (@Charlot74714899): “There is a recording of the Saturday Night Special at the 2016 Seattle convention because of the combination of music and the chemistry between the actors on stage with the band is incredible!”
Judith (@LAgirlHD): “Every single SNS Video of them where Rich joins them!”
Niki (@darlingniki): “Basically any of the SNS videos [are my favorite].”
Laurie (@LauriePrieme): “I’m pretty much addicted to videos of their live performances. It always brings me so much joy to just watch them do what they love and doing it incredibly well too. I love the little interactions between them and the Supernatural actors or the fans, ‘cause they’re just so nice and funny at the same time.”
Michelle (@lydrewsmom): “I’ve been to many, many concerts over the years but none have ever been quite like a Louden Swain concert. The energy in the room feels like a vibration running over a wire, it’s palpable. I’ve been to two SNS performances and my favorite moment for each show was the first strum of Rob’s guitar. It’s like he plucks at the entire room. It truly is magical.”
Every year on Labor Day Weekend, tens of thousands of people descend on Atlanta, Georgia for an event that, despite the recent rise of fan conventions across the country, is still one of a kind. DragonCon is a cornucopia of geekdom spread across 5 hotels and two additional venues. With thousands of hours of programing packed into a five day weekend, there is something for everyone, whether it be Cosplay, Celebrities, workshops, film festivals, art show, concerts, plays, wrestling, or competitive teapot racing. It is a party that starts Thursday night and doesn’t stop until Monday morning when we all stumble back to the realms of normalcy once again.
In no particular order, these are some of the best things about DragonCon!
Celebrities
Its not hard to get star struck at DragonCon. The list of celebrities this year included stars from recent Marvel movies and Tv shows, Superheroes from the CW’s DC universe, and the kids from the wildly popular Netflix series Stranger Things. Other shows represented included Kiljoys, Lost Girl, the Librarians, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Supernatural, the 100, American Gods, and more. It is impossible to attend all of the panels, Q&As, ops, and autographs but the ones that I attended this year were top notch.
DragonCon ultimately, is a convention for fans, by fans, which provides a completely different atmosphere for those who attend. Occasionally, the celebrity guests also want to experience the convention themselves. In previous years, we’ve found out that cast members from Doctor Who, and Lost Girl were seen enjoying all that the convention has to offer. This year, Peter Capaldi was seen wandering the convention and taking pictures with fans.
Panels
I’d never gotten to see Felicia Day in person before this weekend. I’ve been a fan since the music video “Do you Want to Date my Avatar?” Then I loved her portrayal of Charlie Bradbury on Supernatural. But I never really knew much about her until her Sunday morning panel. She talked a little bit about her current work on MST3K and the return of Charlie on Supernatural, but what I found most interesting was her personal struggles with mental health, being a new parent, her thoughts on geek culture, and the creative process.
When asked about what advice she would give to a new creator she answered, tell your truth and tell your story, then practice. She advised that if you ever feel like you are burning out on the thing you love, go back to square one and approach your craft as a novice in order to rediscover your love for it.
Evangaline Lily’s panel, while touching a little on Lost, the Wasp, and the Hobbit, focused primarily on her upcoming book series called “The Squickerwonkers.” She discussed her process and how she never meant to become an actor. “Writing is actually my passion,” she explained while talking about her upcoming 18 books of poems and children’s stories. She had actually given up on her writing until she got the chance to see the Wetaworkshop in action while working on the Hobbit. Here were all these people creating, while also having their little side projects, and she wanted to have her own side project. Thus “The Squickerwonkers” were born. These collections of poems about flawed marionette puppets are beautifully illustrated by Brazilian artist Rodrigo Bastos Didier and hopefully will be in stores Spring 2019.
Monday morning of DragonCon can be one of the hardest to get up and go to panels, but the Star Trek panel was worth it. The panel was made up of 3 Voyager cast members (Ethan Phillips Neelix, Robert Duncan McNeill Tom Paris, and Garrett Wang Harry Kim), 2 from Discovery (Mary Chieffo L’Rell and Kenneth Mitchell Kol), and Walter Koenig (Pavel Chekov) from the original Star Trek cast. This was a fun panel. I never would have expected that Walter was a prankster, but according to his fellow actors, he enjoys pranking them at conventions on a regular basis.
When asked why they thought Voyager has become so popular in recent years, the cast of the show agreed that Captain Janeway was the primary reason. When the show came out, they got a lot of angry responses to the fact that the Captain was a female, but now that the landscape of geek culture has changed and the strong female Captain fits right into that more inclusive and empowering world. They added that they make sure to tell all the girls that they meet at conventions to watch all the episodes, because “when they grow up, they’ll find better husbands (or partners) and a better job because Janeway wouldn’t settle for subpar either.” As a fan of Voyager, I’d have to agree with their assessment.
The panel was also asked “what lessons did they learn from Star Trek.” Their responses were “inclusivity,” “patience,” and that “strength comes from diversity.”
One never knows what to expect when attending a panel with John Barrowman. Add Catherine Tate into the mix and you know that it is going to be a wild ride. My sides were hurting from laughter by the time the hour long panel was over. Many panels at DragonCon consist of panelists sitting behind a table and answering questions from the audience. Barrowman and Tate are not known for doing what everyone else does. Instead, they began the panel by running through the very large room, packed full of hundreds of people, searching for whoever had come the farthest to attend the convention. This ended with a Doctor Donna cosplay being pulled on stage, and Barrowman taking a tour around the room on an electric scooter (with permission). I have to say this was one of the best starts to a panel, i’ve ever experienced.
Also unlike most other panels, where the questions are asked from a line in the audience, those asking questions were pulled on stage. The questions asked revolved mostly around their experiences working on Doctor Who. Particularly interesting was Catherine’s story about keeping her appearance at the end of Tennant’s first series a secret. She explained that she was so worried that it would be the one to spill the secret that she forgot the name she was supposed to check in under at her hotel for filming. She was recognized but ultimately, the secret was kept.
Vendors
Many years ago, the vendor hall of DragonCon could fit into a single room inside the host hotels. Now they have their own building. Housed within Building 2 of the America’s Mart, the Vendor Hall now encompasses three entire floors, with the Comic Book and Pop Artist’s Alley on the fourth floor. If you want it, you can probably find it in the rows upon rows of vendors. Kilts, fancy socks, funko pops, handmade horns & flower crowns, board games, comic books, costuming, tshirts, and stuffed animals are just a few of the wares available. The vendor halls are a major attraction on their own, with lines wrapping the building to get in every morning and nearly all day Saturday. It can take hours to see everything, and its worth every moment. Some people wait all year, just to take on the adventure that is the DragonCon vendor hall.
And if you need a break while you are shopping, they make sure to have food options waiting for you right outside. The scent of Chicken & Waffles, Corn Dogs and Pizza, were certainly helpful in letting you know that you were nearing the main doors on a particular floor.
Parade
In the wee hours of Saturday morning, people start to line the sidewalks along Peachtree Street, as it cuts through the heart of Atlanta. The parade would not start until 10am but there are people in their camp chairs, or sitting on towels & blankets as early as 7:30. The spectacle always attracts large crowds, with thousands of local attendees on top of those taking part in the convention. And it’s no surprise why it’s such a popular event. Hundreds of cosplayers walk the mile long parade route, accompanied by numerous fan vehicles.
Highlights from this years parade include, a menagerie of DeadPools, (most of which were fun mashups with other fandoms), Jawas and their own SandCrawler vehicle, Captain America on his motorcycle, bellydancers, the Lakewood High School Marching Band, Stormtroopers. There were characters from Game of Thrones, Overwatch, Scooby Doo and the Mystery Machine, and Supernatural with a 1967 Chevy Impala (who we all know as Baby). There were Daleks, Spartans (both from Halo and the 300), Elves, Dwarves, Zombies, Wizards, and dragons. The parade is always a delight. It is a slice of the convention presented for those who don’t want to attend the full event. It is a showcase of cosplay and fandom and is truly a must see attraction for DragonCon.
Parties & Special Events
DragonCon is the convention that never stops. To some, it only starts to pick up after the sun goes down and the parties start. Different themed parties and events happen each evening and always attract large crowds and even more fun cosplays. This year kicked off with the Wakanda Welcomes the World party (presented by the new Diversity track) on Thursday night. Also on Thursday night was the Bunny Hutch party, where cosplayers mash their favorite fandoms with the Playboy aesthetic. Later in the weekend, the Yule Ball was a popular event, with the line stretching through the hotel for hours. Zombie Prom, the Doctor Who Ball, the Spectrum Rainbow Flag party, K-Pop Dance Party, Evening at Bree, and The Heroes & Villains Ball also draw big crowds to dance the night away.
If dancing and parties aren’t your jam, you can attend the special DragonCon Night at the Georgia Aquarium. This event takes place off site and requires additional admission, but offers the chance to see some amazing cosplay against the backdrop of the beautiful Georgia Aquarium. Many cosplayers dress as aquatic themed characters but some just bring their A game. This year the Legend of the Chosen costume contest was hosted by Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luther from Smallville) and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite). A magnificent cosplay of the Monkey King took home the top prize.
Concerts
If you travel to the Marquis level of the Marriot, the tables that ring the elevators represent the various bands and artists performing at the convention over the course of the weekend. No DragonCon would be complete without the sound of Cruxshadows’ dark electronic melodies filling the floor and dazzling audiences so late on Sunday night that its actually Monday morning.
Other bands this years included Abney Park, Aurelio Voltaire, The Extraordinary Contraptions, and even the Atlanta Swing Orchestra. Additionally, the Filk Track had its own spectacular lineup of performers this year. Filk is a musical genre, primarily present at conventions, and focus on fandom, fantasy, and science fiction themes. Typically, filk is a type of folk music, though that distinction has broadened over the years to incorporate many different sounds. This year’s filk track included artists like Tom Smith, the Brobdingnagian Bards, The Doubleclicks, Toucan Dubh, LandLoch’d, and Geekapella. These concerts are always a blast. I always leave with my sides hurting from laughing so hard at what these talented individuals come up with.
Gaming
With the vendors inhabiting America’s Mart Building 2, Gaming is at home in Building 1. Open for 24 hours during the 5 days of DragonCon, the Gaming Rooms offer almost every type of game you could want. Board Games, LARPs (Live-Action Role Play games), Dungeons & Dragons, Card Games, PC gaming, and even dedicated space to games of the con favorite “werewolf.”
This year the gaming was even more popular than in previous years. It is always amazing to see so many people interested in tabletop gaming in such a fashion. At one point I saw a line of people all filling out new 5th edition D&D character sheets. The interest in this element of DragonCon has definitely increased in recent years.
This year, once again the game room played host to numerous free to play arcade games. There is something amazing about watching a woman in full steampunk costume playing pinball for 30 minutes. Other games included Dance Dance Revolution, Pac Man, Centipede and an entire Japanese game section. It’s hard to know what all the Japanese games are, but there is always a crowd and a line of people wanting to try their luck on these unique games.
Other Activities
There is so much to do that it is easy to get overwhelmed or miss something, but there are a few other activities that you might find interesting to get you away from the crowds. In the lower level of the Hyatt, there are rooms that play movies non-stop starting on Thursday and ending on Monday, this year movies including the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Labyrinth, and more. On thursday night, there are Wrestling matches. Lips Down on Dixie performs Rocky Horror Picture Show on Saturday Night/Sunday Morning. Drum Circles gather every evening. You can paint your own miniatures in the gaming hall or attend tea-pot racing with the Alternative History track. The costuming track gives workshops on how to create your own cosplays, and successful authors teach you how to write your own novel. There is always something going on, even far away from the large crowds.
Charity
Every year, DragonCon chooses a local charity to work with for the year. The official charity for 2018 was Literacy Action, which works with undereducated adults in the Atlanta area gain better literacy, life, and work skills. Through fundraising efforts, including donations and charity auctions, over $85,000 were raised in support of Literacy Action.
The charity selected for 2019 will be The American Heart Association’s Georgia Chapter, chosen in honor of the long-time director of the Comics and Pop Art division of DragonCon, Thom Trainor. Thom passed away over the summer.
In addition to its charity efforts, DragonCon also hosts an annual blood drive. LifeSouth and the “Pay it Forward” blood drive has been a staple at DragonCon since 2002. Throughout the con, cosplaying volunteers direct attendees to the largest convention-based blood drive in the nation. This years over 3,000 donors contributed nearly 6,000 units of blood, and received a unique T-shirt as their reward for “feeding the vampires.”
Cosplay
Possibly the best this about DragonCon is the cosplay. Cosplayers from around the country and many from across the globe, bring their best cosplays to show at DragonCon. They gather for large group photoshoots, enter into numerous costume contests including the largest of the event The Masquerade, which is held on Sunday night, or simply walk the floor of the Marriot and pose for pictures. The creativity and craftsmanship of these cosplays are truly exceptional and I don’t believe that words can fully describe them, nor can any one article showcase every amazing cosplay showcased at DragonCon.
DragonCon is truly a unique experience. It’s a party that starts on Thursday and doesn’t stop until Monday, with something for everyone no matter what your interests. For this writer, DragonCon always feels like going home. When I started attending the event 15 years ago, it was in two hotels with maybe 20,000 people, now it spans 7 venues with an estimated 80,000+ people attending this year. It keeps growing and keeps getting better and better, with more guests, more cosplay, more events. And you can bet, that I’ll be back once again in 2019.
Today we’re celebrating Matt Cohen’s birthday! You may know Matt as Young John Winchester/Michael on Supernatural, Dr. Griffin Munro on General Hospital, or from his many other roles on Kings of Con, South of Nowhere, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders and How to Get Away with Murder. Matt’s not only known for his acting roles, but for his activism, his ability to stand up for others, and we admire just how big his heart actually is.
So, our staff came together to write our favorite Matt moments. Happy Birthday, Matt!

When I come to think about my favorite Matt moments, honestly, I just think the best thing to say is “all of them”. Every single moment I’ve ever interacted with Matt has been memorable.
When I think about the words to describe what kind of person he is, I almost feel like words can’t do justice. Matt is kind. He’s brave. He’s inspirational. He posts #you posts just in hopes that it will lift your spirits and make your day better. He fights for what he believes in and fights to make this world a better place. He’s endearing, he’s smart. He’s a nerd about his and his family’s butterfly garden, how he loves boxing, his favorite Disney movie, building forts with his wife and son. You can tell he radiates love; whether it be from the way he stands up for people, the way he interacts with people at conventions, or the videos and pictures he posts of himself, his wife, Mandy, and their son. I’ve had multiple interviews, even face-to-face, and I can without a doubt tell you he’s just as kind, and just as nice as he seems to be. For our interview, we were only given about a 15-minute time window, but even after a few mishaps, Matt made sure to do the interview and it was a lot longer than it should have been. He never once made us feel like we were wasting his time; I will never forget that. For the first face-to-face interview that I’ve ever done, it made it feel like I was just talking to an old friend, one that I had known my entire life.
As for the site, he’s been one of our biggest supporters and I don’t think I could ever adequately tell him what that’s meant to my staff. What it’s meant to me.
Matt, thank you for simply being you. For making us believe that we can be the best of ourselves. We’re all so proud of all the success you continue to have. Thank you so much for everything.

My favorite memory with Matt was at the convention in Phoenix, in 2017. I attended his meet and greet and it was the highlight of my weekend.
He is so engaging, friendly, funny, and charming. We had the best time listening to stories about his childhood and his own son. Matt is always so welcoming and happy to see us, and the feeling is very mutual.
I haven’t met Matt Cohen before, but watching his interview that Nerds and Beyond did of him, made me feel like he was a person I could relate to. Seeing how happy he makes the Nerds and Beyond staff and his fans, it’s easy to see that he is a caring and loving person.
I just want to thank him for being so open and devoted to his fans and that means the world to us. We appreciate it more than anything when we feel that we’ve made new friends and role models. I can’t wait to meet him one day and I wish him the best in all his success! Happy birthday Matt Cohen!

I do not even know where to begin with Matt Cohen. He is the most supportive person on the face of this planet. He is so genuine and real and that is refreshing in this day and age.
My in-person interactions with Matt are unfortunately limited to one con, Nashville 2017, but they still manage to make me smile every time I think of them. Matt was the first of my faves to instill confidence in me with regards to my writing. During his autograph session I handed him a #you poem I had written for him to sign, expecting him to just sign and hand it back, and instead he held up the tail end of his autograph line to read it. He did not look up until he finished and then smiled the biggest smile and complemented it.
For an entire year, any time I would have doubts about writing I would think about that interaction. It was not a great piece of work but he took the time to say it was. Thanks to that moment I kept at it and have grown a lot. He also (jokingly) told me to find better people than Rob Benedict to be a fan of but I let that one slide. After all, nobody is perfect.
I became a fan of Matt via his #you posts on Instagram. There are days I will scroll through and just read because either I need a pick me up or I know someone who does. I love that he is having the success that he is because if anyone deserves it it is a guy with a heart like his.
I hope you have the happiest of birthdays, Matt!

I have to say that one of the best things about Matt is his genuine love for the fans and his seemingly endless energy. Every single story from fans after a con always talks about his genuine interest in talking with them, in making sure they get his full attention. He seems to radiate happiness and love that everyone in a room can pick up on.
Seeing Matt perform at the New Jersey con in 2017 is one of my absolute favorite memories. His energy is unparalleled when he is on stage. He somehow got the entire room just as pumped as he was in the span of a single song. We were all cheering and singing and smiling right along with him. It was amazing to see how genuinely happy he was to be there, singing for his fans and having a good time.
Even when he wasn’t performing himself, his joy seemed to radiate off the stage into everyone around him. I never saw him stop smiling the entire time. His presence made SNS even more memorable for me, and I would not trade anything for that experience. I cannot wait to meet him at the Dallas con next year!
Thank you for being such an amazing human and constantly encouraging all of us with you positivity. Happy birthday Matt!
My favorite memory of Matt is from Nashcon 2017. I had a meet and greet with him, Rob and Rich. I had decided to make cookies for everyone in the group. I had also heard that Matt was vegan, and made the appropriate cookies. When I told him there were vegan cookies, he informed me that he was not vegan, but he appreciated that I made them. Matt then yelled “Everyone eat those cookies! They are vegan, that means they’re healthy!” It was very funny.
Happy Birthday, Matt! I hope it’s a good one!

It gives me great joy watching Matt interact with his fans at Karaoke. He is such a ball of energy; constantly running back and forth on the stage. I can tell that he is genuinely happy to be there, no matter how tired he must be, he really wants to make sure that the fans have a great time.
He goes out of his way to create real moments that his fans will remember and cherish even if the moment only lasts a few seconds. My favorite Matt moment happened this past weekend at #SPNIndy. It was during autographs, I had an article about the Birthday Project that Nerds and Beyond had done that I wanted him to sign. He thanked all of the writers for their support. He looked me right in the eye and I could tell that he meant every word. It made me very proud to be a part of something larger than myself.
Happy birthday Matt! I hope you have many special birthday moments on your special day.
