Interview: Musician Aidan Alexander Talks Latest Singles, Creating in Isolation, and More! [EXCLUSIVE]

0

Aidan Alexander might not be a household name yet, but he’s well on his way to becoming one.

The actor and musician released two new songs in March after a two-year-long hiatus from releasing music. His first single “I Don’t Love You” released in 2018 has been well-received, racking in over 3 million streams on Spotify alone. Nerds and Beyond recently had the chance to interview Alexander about his latest musical releases “the hills” and “the end of the world.”

Nerds and Beyond: Your song “the hills,” to me, is very reminiscent of an alter ego or having two different lives. Did your own experiences living in Hollywood help formulate how you approached writing it?

Alexander: Definitely. Growing up in this environment as a teenager, I saw and experienced more than the average kid so I wanted to write something that was playful and not taken too seriously (as everyone in LA takes themselves), but still inherently dark in its messaging.

Nerds and Beyond: You’ve just released two new songs after a two-year break, you have a new song coming in April — what are three words you would use to describe your upcoming music?

Alexander: Experimental, hopeful, and reflective. I think there is good in this world and I wanted to highlight it more. Genre wise, I’ve always been inspired by so many different artists and styles, so I’ve been wanting to experiment more with my music and take chances while still being accessible to people. I am making music that I love and would listen to.

Nerds and Beyond: Once the world begins to settle down and open back up, what are you most looking forward to doing?

Alexander: Touring! The world is so big and full of so many special people. I want to meet the people that have been supporting my music and me for so many years. I want to go to a concert every week. I need that human connection and the connection you feel with the music when you are touring.

Nerds and Beyond: Can you talk about your writing process in general? Do you thrive better in a specific environment?

Alexander: It’s always different. I tend to write better when I’m alone. Sometimes my music starts as poetry, but other times I go into the studio with an idea and just write with the music on loop. It’s always different and it’s lawless, which is something I love about it.

Nerds and Beyond: Having said that, has self-isolation affected the way you approach your creative process as a whole?

Alexander: I have always self-isolated a bit, but the severity of quarantine has definitely made writing harder for me. I tend to write about what I see and am stimulated by, so being in my room all the time and not being able to go out and see the world and be exposed to other things, proved a challenge. At the same time, I think I learned a lot about myself, which will be reflected in my music.

Nerds and Beyond: “the end of the world” has definitive nods to the pandemic, but it’s also very poetic. What made you want to write a track like it and what does it mean to you?

Alexander: I wanted to write about something timely, but I’m also a fan of disaster movies and how they make you feel and think about the world, so getting to be creative with that theme was natural. Having spent so much time alone over the last year made me realize that I don’t like it nearly as much as I thought I did, so I wanted to express that in the song as well.

Nerds and Beyond: You’re also an actor, and acting and music almost go hand in hand. Between telling a story, the artistry, and emotion, was transitioning into music easier for you because of your background in acting?

Alexander: I’m not sure if it was easier, but being a creative person I think helped me to express myself in different ways. They’re very different industries and it takes a whole lot of unlearning and relearning. I am still learning. I think being in the spotlight has helped me thicken my skin a bit, which can be helpful.

Nerds and Beyond: Who are some of your own musical inspirations?

Alexander: I love Lorde, Isaac Dunbar, Fleetwood Mac, Kerli, Amy Winehouse and Miley Cyrus. I have a ton of influences, from poets to authors, to musicians.

Jake Cloobeck

Nerds and Beyond: What’s something you hope your fans take away from your music?

Alexander: I hope they just find comfort knowing other people feel alone, too. There is no such thing as perfection, and everyone goes through things they feel isolated by. I hope they take away some solace from it, but also have fun and lose themselves in the upbeat ones.

Nerds and Beyond: Finally, what’s one piece of advice you would give to aspiring musicians?

Alexander: Never stop writing and try to figure out what your voice and sound is. What do you have to say and contribute that the world needs to hear? Also, don’t ever give up. There are so many people who will tell you no, or to stop, or it’s unrealistic, but if you’re passionate and can’t see yourself doing anything else, keep going.

Spring Is in Full Bloom With a Rare Chance To Get a Signature From Our Favorite Bloom, Orlando Bloom

You read that title right, spring is here and just to make it special Orlando Bloom is offering autographs via a send-in service.

Twin Cities Comics (TCC) is hosting a signing event with Orlando Bloom. For the next few weeks you will be able to purchase an autograph from Bloom either on one of a handful of pre-selected photos, or on your own item if you are willing to send it in. The Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean actor has not done this kind of private signing before, and to make it even more special, he has agreed to do a limited number of inscriptions (character names or personalization) and quotes to go along with the signature.

A signature on one of TCC’s pre-selected photos will cost between $235 and $265 dollars, while the cost of having your own item signed will cost between $225 and $400 depending on the item. An inscription will run you an additional $150 to $250 dollars, but TCC does offer witnessed authentication for only $10 more so you can be assured that you get your money’s worth.

There are certain limitations on the inscribed signings, but you can find all the details about inscriptions here. Personal items to be signed also have certain limitations. For example, at least for now, they cannot do signings on replica bows. So if you were hoping to have Legolas sign your bow I’m afraid you’re out of luck for now, although they promise to update you if that policy changes if you email them. Also, all items mailed to their office for signing must arrive by April 19. So make sure you plan for enough shipping time. For more details about sending in you own items check out all the details here.

As of right now the pre-selected photos are listed as pre-sale, but don’t let that fool you. Blooms autographs can, and likely will, sell out. So if you need some Orlando Bloom this spring, make sure you jump on this opportunity.

Review: ‘Hello, Cruel Heart’ by Maureen Johnson Explores Cruella’s Teen Years Before Becoming a Disney Villain

Hello, Cruel Heart is inspired by the upcoming Walt Disney Studios live-action film, Cruella, serving as a prequel to the movie. Written by bestselling author Maureen Johnson, the new story centers on a teenage Estella, Cruella de Vil before she becomes the 1970’s Cruella we’ll see in the live-action film. Set in the summertime of 1967 London, 16 year old Estella wants nothing more than to become a fashion designer for all of London’s elite. She’s young, ambitious, and full of talent. Estella finds herself a petty criminal, stealing to survive with her makeshift family including Jasper and Horace who she meets upon her arrival in the big city.

How can Estella dedicate herself to joining the ranks of London’s design elite when she’s busy sewing endless costumes and disguises for the trio’s heists? When a chance encounter with Magda and Richard Moresby-Plum, two young scions of high society, vaults Estella into the world of the rich and famous, she begins to wonder whether she might, indeed, be destined for more after all. Suddenly, Estella’s days are filled with glamorous parties, exclusive eateries, flirtations with an up-and-coming rock star, and, of course, the most cutting-edge fashions money can buy. But what is the true cost of keeping up with the fast crowd—and is it a price Estella is willing to pay?

This electric story vividly brings to life the swinging London scene of the late ’60s as Estella navigates the upper class world in which she’s fighting for a place. This fresh take on Cruella’s origin story is a fantastic twist that fans of the Disney villain won’t want to miss. Estella is all sharp wit and cleverness as she tries to win over Magda, Richard, and their crowd of rich friends who find every new fad boring within a week. The world is quickly evolving and ever changing, something Estella isn’t used to but learns to navigate and speaks to a side of Cruella’s character we’ve never seen. Before she became the “vampire bat,” as it’s put in the original animated film, she was fighting for survival and dreaming larger than life dreams about ruling the world of fashion.

Disney Press

Johnson also takes the opportunity to speak to the disparities between London’s elite rich and the less fortunate who do what they must to survive. It’s a stark contrast as Estella goes from living in a bombed out building they call ‘the Lair’ to the huge Moresby-Plum mansions, elegant restaurants, and extravagant parties. Along the way, Estella also finds herself romantically involved with a boy for the first time. It’s a complicated relationship with Estella struggling to open up to him. So much of her life feels secretive and she begins to let someone new in, but is that a wise decision? Throughout it all Cruella appears in a beautifully complex way that shines a light on how the young dreamer Estella will develop into the Cruella fans know. It’s a backstory to highlight that villains aren’t always born, they’re made by their circumstances.

Estella’s life is complex and full of adventure that keeps you engaged and wondering what will happen next while bringing the swinging London scene and this new upper-class world to life. Johnson also encompasses vivid descriptions of Estella’s fashion designs that’ll leave readers wishing they could own an Estella design of their own.

Dave Grohl To Release ‘The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music’ Memoir Later This Year

0

Over the past year, Dave Grohl, frontman of the Foo Fighters, has been documenting various stories in his life on the @davestruestories Instagram account and at Medium. Now, these stories and more are officially hitting print in his new book The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music. The book, from Dey Street Books (an imprint of Harper Collins), will hit shelves on October 5.

The official description for the memoir is as follows:

“So, I’ve written a book.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities (“It’s a piece of cake! Just do 4 hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!”) I have decided to write these stories just as I have always done, in my own hand. The joy that I have felt from chronicling these tales is not unlike listening back to a song that I’ve recorded and can’t wait to share with the world, or reading a primitive journal entry from a stained notebook, or even hearing my voice bounce between the Kiss posters on my wall as a child.

This certainly doesn’t mean that I’m quitting my day job, but it does give me a place to shed a little light on what it’s like to be a kid from Springfield, Virginia, walking through life while living out the crazy dreams I had as young musician. From hitting the road with Scream at 18 years old, to my time in Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, jamming with Iggy Pop or playing at the Academy Awards or dancing with AC/DC and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, drumming for Tom Petty or meeting Sir Paul McCartney at Royal Albert Hall, bedtime stories with Joan Jett or a chance meeting with Little Richard, to flying halfway around the world for one epic night with my daughters…the list goes on. I look forward to focusing the lens through which I see these memories a little sharper for you with much excitement.”

Bonus ‘Mythic Quest’ Episode Coming Ahead of Season 2 Premiere

With a month to go until the season 2 premiere of Mythic Quest, it has been announced that a special standalone episode entitled “Everlight” will land on Apple TV+ next Friday, April 16.

Created by Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Megan Ganz, Mythic Quest follows the team behind the (fictionally) biggest multiplayer video game of all time. McElhenney leads the series alongside Charlotte Nicdao, David Hornsby, Danny Pudi, F. Murray Abraham, Imani Hakim, Jessie Ennis, and Ashly Burch.

The last time we saw the Mythic Quest crew was in the “Quarantine” episode that tied off the first season, in which the team interacted via video chat while working remotely, and we saw the varying effects that the pandemic was having on each of them. Now, next week’s new episode will focus on the struggles that come with returning to normal life as the team heads back to the office for their annual Everlight party, which will include a LARP tournament and none other than Sir Anthony Hopkins as a voice guest star.

Season 2 of Mythic Quest will see the team back in the office as they attempt to build upon the success of Raven’s Banquet by launching their next expansion. However, Ian and his new co-creative director Poppy find themselves struggling with the game’s direction. Meanwhile, C.W. will work to reconcile unresolved issues from his past, Rachel and Dana test the bounds of an office romance, and Jo leaves David to becomes Brad’s assistant instead.

First Look at Kate Mulgrew’s Captain Janeway in ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Released

During the virtual First Contact Day celebration, a new look at Captain Kathryn Janeway (voiced by Kate Mulgrew) was released. With Mulgrew reprising her role, Captain Janeway will serve as the Starship’s built-in emergency training hologram. Revealed by the series executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman, they also announced that Star Trek: Prodigy will take place in 2383 after the events of Star Trek: Voyager and in the Delta Quadrant.

The series is the first aimed at the younger audience, and will follow “a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future.”

The main difference between this series and the others in the franchise is that this group knows nothing about the ship they have commandeered, but that will change as they get introduced to the Starfleet and all it represents.
