After an initial debut at Sundance Film Festival, Monster is finally coming to our screens, and Netflix has released the first trailer.

Based on the Walter Dean Myers book of the same name, Monster follows Steve Harmon, a 17-year-old film student whose life takes a turn for the worst when he’s charged with murder. Viewers will follow Steve as he faces his legal journey and trial.

The trailer shows viewers Steve’s passion for filmmaking in the way he interacts with those around him. It also promises a film that will be as engrossing and heartwrenching as its source material.

Monster is executive produced by John Legend and Nas. It stars Jharrel Jerome, Kelvin Harrison Jr., John David Washington, Jennifer Hudson, Jeffrey Wright, and A$AP Rocky. It was written by Janece Shaffer and Colen C. Wiley and directed by Anthony Mandler.

Monster premieres on Netflix on May 7.
