‘DC’s Stargirl’ Recap: Season 2, Episode 5 “Summer School: Chapter 5”

This week’s episode of DC’s Stargirl had the horror movie vibe going throughout the entire episode as darkness and a dark force are getting closer to Blue Valley and the young heroes. Meanwhile, continuing her plan at building a new ISA, Cindy has her eyes on a cool recruit prospect from her list.

Read on to find out what kind of trouble has blown into Blue Valley this week.

The Shadow of Our Parents

The CW

Much like the majority of the kids on the series, whether they know the truth or not, Cindy has parental issues. The episode begins with a flashback from ten years ago, where we see a young Cindy wake up screaming from a nightmare. Her mother rushes in to comfort her as her daughter is in hysterics, saying that her father wants to change her and that she does not want to be like him. After her mother leaves the room, the quiet creepy music plays. You know the one right, the one that plays on horror movies right before something terrible happens. There he is, the Dragon King emerges from the darkness, obviously startling his daughter as we hear the scream off-camera.

Finding a Muse

Eliza Morse/The CW

With all the weird weather happening in Blue Valley, even though the weather says it should be sunny, it sends Cameron inside, forcing him to take a break from working on his father’s mural. On his way, he runs into Mr. Deisinger. As they talk, Cam’s sketchbook falls to the ground. Mr. Deisinger picks it up and sees all the life drawings of the one and only Courtney Whitmore. He tells Cam that it seems he has found his muse. You can see the sad look fall over the teacher as he mentions that he had a muse once, but not anymore.

Later in the art room, Cindy uses the Black Diamond and does something to Mr. Deisinger. There is a purple glow in one of his eyes, and he hears a strange male voice telling him that he is his new muse. During class, he can’t stop coughing and ends the lesson early. Mr. Deisinger begins to cough up paint in the art room as the lights flicker – get the salt!

A Creative Fight

Eliza Morse/The CW

While they are supposed to be waiting for Pat to get to the school to investigate something related to the weather, Stargirl, Hourman, Wildcat, and Dr. Mid-Nite see Mr. Deisinger’s car and go into the school to find him.

Meanwhile, he is in the art room staring at a blank canvas telling the voice that he cannot see anything. The voice, which is Eclipso, tells him to use his muse and look harder. With paint-covered eyes, he begins to paint rapidly on the canvas.

As the JSA team runs in, they see the room covered in splattered paint, so you know that is not a good sign. Over multiple canvases, there seems to be the same type of vortex-like drawing. That’s when a storm hits. Yolanda hears ringing in her ears, and the door of the classroom closes shut. The “room wind” picks up and someone starts coming out of the vortex painting in a very The Ring movie way. Whatever it is, it starts crawling the walls using the splattered paint to move around. As they get to the hallway, Yolanda, Beth, and Rick are haunted by fears and leaving Courtney on her own. Mr. Deisinger, with paint swirling all around him in darkness, says something that gives Courtney the idea to use the light from her staff, telling him to reach for “the light.” He does and collapses to the ground.

Power

Talking about the event in the garage, Pat mentions that Eclipso’s powers are getting stronger since he did all that without the Black Diamond being there. Also, on the power front, as Cameron is painting, he drops his paintbrush having what looks like hand pain. The camera zooms to it, and it is covered in frost!

From the creator of The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor comes Netflix’s latest horror series — Midnight Mass.

Mike Flanagan planted the seeds for Midnight Mass years ago, having previously teased it as the title of a book that appeared in his 2016 slasher film Hush and his 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game. Now, it’s finally time to visit Crockett Island with this seven-episode limited series.

Midnight Mass tells the tale of a small, isolated island community whose existing divisions are amplified by the return of a disgraced young man (Zach Gilford) and the arrival of a charismatic priest (Hamish Linklater). When Father Paul’s appearance on Crockett Island coincides with unexplained and seemingly miraculous events, a renewed religious fervor takes hold of the community — but do these miracles come at a price?

After cryptic videos, a teaser trailer, and an ominous looking poster, the full trailer has arrived. Check it out below.

The series also stars Kate Siegel, Rahul Abburi, Crystal Balint, Matt Biedel, Alex Essoe, Annarah Cymone, Annabeth Gish, Rahul Kohli, Kristin Lehman, Robert Longstreet, Igby Rigney, Samantha Sloyan, Henry Thomas, and Michael Trucco.

Midnight Mass will premiere exclusively on Netflix later this month on Friday, September 24. Stay tuned for our coverage!

‘What If…?’ Episode 5 Review: An Epic Team Up Against the Undead

Marvel Studios’ animated series What If…? is back with another new episode this week, continuing to flip the script on the Marvel Cinematic Universe by reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways.

Thus far, we’ve seen Captain Carter wielding the shield, T’Challa as Star-Lord, a failed version of the Avengers Initiative, and a heartbreaking twist on the origin story of Doctor Strange. This week’s episode is a callback to a Marvel comics metaseries, Marvel Zombies. The first five-issue run was introduced in December 2005, written by The Walking Dead‘s Robert Kirkman with art by Sean Phillips.

What If…? continues to outdo itself with each and every episode, and this week has easily proven to be my personal favorite yet.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

The episode opens with a familiar scene: Bruce Banner falling back to Earth to warn the Avengers about Thanos. This places this alternate universe event into the timeline during Avengers: Infinity War. However, when Bruce comes crashing down into Doctor Strange’s New York Sanctum, the only one there to greet him is the Cloak of Levitation (which truly manages to be a standout “character” once again). A brilliant switch on the showdown with Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian follows, serving as a chilling introduction for the episode’s central plot — ZOMBIES!

It’s moments like this (and many others throughout the episode) that reveal What If…? for what it really is deep down: a love letter to Marvel fans. Watching each episode is not just an exciting dive into the unknown as audiences are introduced to an intriguing alternate reality. It’s also a walk down memory lane full of familiar characters and locations, favorite lines, Easter eggs, and reminders of all of the things that have collectively brought MCU fans together over the course of the past 13 years.

Coming into this episode, I found myself wondering what angle the series would take to introduce a zombie virus to the MCU. The writing choice to orchestrate this ended up being ingenious, as Hank Pym accidentally bringing it back from the Quantum Realm on his mission to rescue his wife Janet fits very neatly into the existing narrative.

While we’ve seen several different team-ups over the years in the MCU, this episode throws together a brilliant group with familiar faces and unsung heroes — who I really would have loved to have seen together in the films. I’d gladly tune in to an entire series of Peter Parker driving this team up a wall while filming them and teaching audiences how to survive a zombie apocalypse. And speaking of Peter, he seems to always find himself an adoptive parent wherever he goes (I’m ready and waiting for the Peter and Strange dynamic in Spider-Man: No Way Home), and his relationship here with Hope van Dyne is no exception.

On top of the inclusion of the Cloak of Levitation, there were other great appearances like Happy Hogan (arguably one of the MCU’s best characters and you know it), Sharon Carter, Okoye, and of course T’Challa. Eagle-eyed fans will also recognize Kurt as a character from the Ant-Man films.

Personally, my favorite part of the episode was the presence of Infinity War-era Bucky Barnes, who we didn’t get to spend nearly enough time within the film itself before he was dusted out of existence for five years. From his hilarious shower introduction to his final selfless sacrifice (and a heartwarming exchange with T’Challa in between), this is the James Buchanan Barnes we know and love … with the voice of Sebastian Stan, to boot. Above all, as a longtime fan of this character and his various exploits on the screen and in the comics, it was incredibly satisfying to see him given the opportunity to finally wield the shield in the MCU — something that has been teased countless times in the films. And yes, Bucky’s parting, “I guess this is the end of the line,” to Zombie Cap was an equal parts amazing and painful callback to one of the best friendships in the MCU.

This episode also takes a tragic cue from the Disney+ series WandaVision, which was an exploration of grief as Wanda fell apart after the loss of Vision and refused to let him go. What If…? turns the tables on this event when it’s revealed that Vision had no intention to cure the world of the virus, despite what he told Bruce and co. when he lured them into the building. Vision wasn’t able to cure Wanda after she was turned, so he devoted his efforts to keeping the zombified Scarlet Witch fed instead. No matter the universe, these two will do whatever it takes to be together.

While dark and dramatic at times, this episode was also laced with Marvel’s signature humor throughout, constantly hitting all the right notes with punchlines galore. Bucky’s offhanded comment to Okoye over the loss of zombie Sam — “I should be sad, but I’m not” — may sound crass out of context, but in reality, it’s an amusing reference to he and Sam’s entertaining frenemies dynamic. And animated or live-action, Scott Lang will forever and always be the most reliable and consistent source of comic relief — “Wingardium Leviosa!”

With a handful of episodes left to go and the second season on the horizon, my excitement and curiosity continue to grow for what other unturned corners of the MCU What If…? will question and explore.

Don’t miss the next episode of What If…? when it premieres exclusively on Disney+ next Wednesday, September 15. Stay tuned for our weekly reviews!

Eddie Vedder Releases New Single “Long Way” off Upcoming Album ‘Earthling’

“Long Way,” a single off of Eddie Vedder’s upcoming solo album Earthling, has been released. The tune is slightly different than anything else he’s released up until this point, with shades of Tom Petty interwoven throughout.

Vedder has been releasing solo music for over a decade. His last solo album, “Ukulele Songs,” was released in 2011. Recently, Vedder collaborated with his daughter Olivia for a track on the Flag Day film soundtrack. Last year, the Pearl Jam frontman shared two solo songs as part of a fundraiser for the rare disease Epidermolysis Bullosa.

A special 7-inch limited edition vinyl of “Long Way” is available on the Pearl Jam store.

“Long Way” is available to stream and purchase wherever you listen to music.
