Jake Gyllenhaal to Star in Heist Thriller ‘Cut & Run’

0

Jake Gyllenhaal is set to star in and produce an upcoming heist thriller film, Cut & Run. Cut & Run is about a group of thieves who use speedboats to rob super-yachts. However, their heisting career takes a turn when they steal the wrong thing from the wrong group of people.

Gyllenhaal will also produce the film under the Nine Stories banner alongside New Republic Pictures. New Republic won the rights to the film written by John Glenn (Law Abiding Citizen, Clash of the Titans) following a bidding war between several potential buyers. New Republic’s Brian Oliver and Bradley Fischer will join Gyllenhaal and Glenn as producers.

New Republic Pictures and Nine Stories were first confirmed to team up in a first-look deal and partnership for Oblivion Song, a feature film adaptation of Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici’s graphic novel. The production companies’ partnership will first be tested, however, by Ambulance, which is set to release on April 8, 2022. Both Ambulance and Oblivion Song will star Gyllenhaal as well.

‘9-1-1: Lone Star’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 3 “Shock & Thaw”

We’ve been waiting a very long two weeks to find out the fates of Marjan, T.K., and Owen, who were left in perilous situations in the second episode. Let’s dive in to season 3, episode 3, “Shock & Thaw.”

Not Everything Is As It Seems

FOX

A sheriff’s deputy on patrol discovers a wrecked van, with evidence of injury and cut plastic handcuffs. (This is obviously the van that was carrying the coyotes that Elena and the others fought.) After searching for any stranded people, the deputy leaves to continue his vehicle patrol. Meanwhile, Marjan is about 20 yards away in her crashed car. She hears the deputy yelling, and she runs up the hill as quickly as she can to reach the voice she hears. But she is too late and watches him drive off.

Later, one of the folks from the barn has left out on his own, believing he can reach help without being dragged down by the others. As he walks through the blinding snow, he runs up on the deputy out on his patrol and yells for help. The deputy walks up to him, but someone on the other end of his radio reveals that the cartel are in communication with the deputy. He tells the helpless man, “Wish you hadn’t heard that,” pulls out his gun, and kills the man. Marjan happens to see this take place and runs away, followed closely by the deputy.

Marjan eventually finds a temporary place to hide and tries to call Owen. She leaves him a message, telling him about the so-called deputy who is looking for her and is dangerous. She tells him that, no matter what, to just stay away from him. And she then continues to make her way to Owen’s cabin.

Just A Dream

Kevin Estrada/FOX

T.K. wakes up in bed, the sun shining in on a warm spring day. He walks downstairs to his mom, Gwyneth, making tea. (This is clearly a hospital-grade drug-induced hallucination.) T.K. asks her where Owen is, and she says that he is probably at work. T.K. starts to tell her that he is currently in between jobs but is interrupted by the beautiful weather outside. “Hmm, the storm must have passed.”

After spending some more time with his mother, T.K. hears a high pitched, shrill beeping sound. He doesn’t know what it is, but we see that it’s the heart monitor in the ICU beeping to alert the hospital staff that his heartrate is dropping. (The sound wakes up a sleeping Carlos, who is in a chair by T.K.’s bed.) Back in the kitchen, Gwyneth is now making T.K.’s favorite cookies. He says he loves being together with her again and asks how long they will be together, and Gwyneth says they can’t be together forever. T.K. objects, stating that everything right now is perfect and that “perfect things should last forever.” The timer for the cookies dings before the cookies are even made, which confuses T.K. Gwyneth explains that things don’t always make sense. “The longer you stay here, the harder it is to get back.” T.K. says he understands. The scene ends with another shot of T.K. in the hospital bed, unresponsive but still alive.

Later, Carlos, Tommy, and Nancy are being informed of T.K.’s prognosis by his doctor. He could potentially suffer multiple organ failure, so he must remain sedated to hopefully rest enough to begin to heal. When Carlos asks if he will be ok and if that plan of action will work, the doctor explains that it is possible he could recover. But if his vital signs continue to worsen, “We could lose him,” Carlos finishes.

A Rewarding Career

In another part of the hospital, a recovering Paul is visited by Judd and Mateo. They are joking about the possibility of Marjan punching Owen if he doesn’t sign Billy’s apology letter. Then, the parents of Lindsey (who was saved by Paul and who also saved Paul) enter Paul’s room to thank him for saving their daughter. The father throws very expensive gifts at Paul’s feet, including a special order lamb’s wool blanket and Rolexes (plural). He then asks Paul if he would like a Maserati. Paul thinks he is joking, but the father is not. Then, Mateo tries to score some sweet swag from the dad, telling him that he and Judd were also on the scene. But Judd reminds him and everyone that the reward of being a firefighter is the job itself and that no gifts are necessary.

A Dangerous Trek

FOX

In the barn, the armed man, who we now know is named Manuel, is trying to reach his contacts via radio and reveals their location. Owen tries to negotiate with Manuel, and through Elena’s translations, he tells him that he’ll leave cash with them. In return, he will leave the barn and not report them to the authorities. But as Manuel reaches for the cash, Owen knocks him out, ties him up, and is back in control of the situation. However, the radio crackles, and the person on the other end confirms that he’s received everyone’s location and they’re on their way.

Owen and the others pack up and leave the barn, hoping to make it to Owen’s cabin. Manuel is tied up to prevent his escape, and another man is suffering from severe frostbite. So he is being dragged on a wooden door. The trek is slow, but progress is being made. They eventually make it to Owen’s cabin where Sadie greets them. Once everyone is inside and starting to warm up, Owen tries to call for help on the ham radio but gets only static.

A few moments later, the dangerous deputy pulls up to Owen’s cabin, and because Owen hasn’t received Marjan’s message yet, this is very bad news. Marjan makes her way to the cabin as well, but is not able to warn Owen and the others. Inside, the deputy questions Owen about the other folks with him. He explains that many of them need medical attention and that they really should get some sort of advocacy group involved to help the folks with their immigration status situation. It becomes clear very quickly that the deputy despises the immigrants and wants to play no part in helping them. When the ham radio crackles, Sadie walks over to answer it, but the deputy pulls out his gun to stop her. When she asks what’s going on, Owen explains that the deputy works for the cartel. The deputy responds that he is “more of a private contractor.”

Outside, Marjan comes up with a brilliant plan to get the deputy away from Owen and the others. She sets off the sirens in the police cruiser, which draws out the deputy. He forces Owen to shut off the sirens, not knowing who else is out in the snow. When Owen gets to the cruiser, he sees a long piece of cloth stuck in the gas tank and looks over to see Marjan hiding with a box of matches. Owen shuts off the sirens, and as he walks back to the cabin porch, Marjan sets a match to a line of gasoline that runs to the cruiser’s tank. When the car explodes, Owen uses the opportunity to attack the deputy, and Elena comes to assist by knocking him out cold with a swift kick to the head.

Finally, the deputy is taken away in a police cruiser, and the injured folks are treated by EMS. Later, Owen and Marjan (and Buttercup!) are driving, and Marjan asks Owen why he really won’t sign the apology letter. She says that it’s not too late for him to return to the job, but Owen is adamant that he is not returning. She calls him “so stubborn,” and Owen turns up the radio to change the subject. Tom Petty’s “Breakdown” begins to play on the radio, and Owen and Marjan sing the all-too-appropriate-for-the-current-situation lyrics to each other.

Breakdown

FOX

At the eerily silent call center, Tommy is bringing Grace up to speed regarding T.K.’s prognosis. She tells her that things don’t look good, and Grace reminds her that “with God, all things” and to keep the faith. Tommy says she will try to do just that. She then laments that she should not have let T.K. go after the drowning boy in the frozen pond. Otherwise, he would be healthy right now. Grace reminds her that, because of him and her, a little boy is home with his family right now.

After a not-so-surprising surprise party for Grace (because coworker Bree gave Grace a head’s up to prevent any premature labor), Grace goes home to work on painting the nursery, when there is a knock at her door. She opens it to Billy, who brings sandwiches and an offer for Judd: the captain’s position at the 125 is going to open up, and he thinks his best friend would be a great fit. Grace reminds Billy that he torched their friendship when he destroyed the 126. Next, in what could be a TED Talk titled “How to Destroy a Grown Man Using Only Words,” she then calls him out on what’s really motivating him: “I’ve read that there are two reasons we do anything. There’s a good reason, and then there’s the real one.” She knows that he is jealous of Owen Strand’s success running the 126, and that is the reason he couldn’t resist shutting down the firehouse. Unfortunately, her stress levels cause her water to break, and Judd cannot be reached.

Grace tries her damnedest to get Billy out of her hair, to no avail. She tells him that if he really wants to help, he’ll find Judd and bring him to the hospital. Grace is determined to drive herself to the hospital without his (or anyone’s) help. She won’t listen to Billy’s pleas to let him drive her in his truck, and as she drives away, Billy jumps in the moving car.

On their way to the hospital, Billy admits that Grace is right about her calling him out for being jealous of Owen’s success. Grace then begins to scream as her contractions continue, and Billy reaches for her hand. She bats it away and tells him that he is neither a friend nor family and that he should not touch her. While Grace continues yelling at Billy, we see them get stuck in unyielding snow. Grace isn’t able to make it to the hospital after all.

The next episode of 9-1-1: Lone Star will premiere on FOX on Monday, January 31 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Stay tuned for our continued coverage on the series, including episodic recaps and more!

‘Nancy Drew’: Our Season Finale Predictions

0

Contributors: Jules, Brianna

A show like Nancy Drew always has several storylines running at once, and this season is no exception. Once again, the writers have managed to take several story threads that seemed completely separate and weave them together, leading to a finale that will deliver on a number of fronts. Temperance’s last stand will leave the fate of Horseshoe Bay in the balance. With the season 3 finale of Nancy Drew coming this Friday, we wanted to discuss the many theories we have, from The Road Back to those pesky tarot card predictions!

Fanson: The Sinking Ship

Shane Harvey/The CW

Relationships have remained at the forefront of our minds in these final episodes and I have to talk about how quickly George and Nick went from engaged and ready to get married to fully imploding from one truth spell. While there’s no doubt they still love each other, their whole relationship has been under the constant threat of imminent danger. With that threat removed, the duo need to take time to grow as individuals and confront their trauma. Both are under immense pressure as the Drew Crew race to beat Temperance to the final piece of Charity’s soul. Nick had a breakdown in the penultimate episode, blaming himself for nearly getting the children at the youth center killed.

Meanwhile, George’s sisters are struggling to accept the break up, Nick was the longest stable male figure in their lives. As George grapples with pulling her family together and Nick falls apart (see our section on the Tarot Cards for more here), it’s clear they are not in any place to reconcile. For those reasons I’m not foreseeing some grand reunion in the season finale unless one or both of them are literally facing down death again (which could definitely happen). When the series gets a season 4 (yes I said when) I wouldn’t be surprised if we see trauma arcs for them both and a new type of slow burn in the form of reconciliation as they grow.

New Witch in Town

Shane Harvey/The CW

Episode 10 saw Hannah step down as head of the Horseshoe Bay Historical Society. The Drew Crew have all taken a vested interest in it (rightfully so, considering how helpful those archives are) but Bess has stepped up even more so this season. She’s digitally archiving the records, researched for clues on George’s situation and the Copperhead, and filled in Hannah’s shoes without missing a beat. As Hannah steps away from her role, it feels like a natural transition for Bess to take the initiative and take over. If we don’t see a firm decision on this in the finale I feel it’ll definitely happen in season 4.

Additionally, Bess’ confidence in both herself and her magic has grown exponentially this season. Though more than one spell has gone awry (truth spell and poor Ace, anyone?), but that has yet to deter her from working harder to improve. With the battle against Temperance coming to a head, Bess will likely try to work one or more spells beyond her level of experience. The Drew Crew do hold one advantage, the latest episode revealed that Ace holds the final piece of Charity’s soul. And what does Bess have ample success with? The soul splitter. She will use the soul splitter to extract the final piece of Charity’s soul from Ace. Now whether that will be successful or deter the Copperhead (remember, he operates by scent and Ace will likely still smell of Charity to it) will be the big question. Whatever the episode holds for Bess, her magic will likely play a major role.

The Road Back

Shane Harvey/The CW

The Nancy Drew writers have proven time and time again that no plot thread is dropped, even if it may recede into the background. Many fans have wondered why The Road Back, which was teased as being a major part of season 3, has largely been a background antagonist this season. Some of this has to do with spin-off Tom Swift, which is set to feature the shadowy organization as its main focus. But when (if?) the Drew Crew manages to defeat Temperance in the finale, The Road Back will almost certainly make an appearance to set up season 4.

After all, both Nancy and Ace have ties to the group, and even if Tom will be the character dealing most directly with them, that will need to be established prior to the premiere of the spin-off. Additionally, Everett’s trial is coming closer and closer, which will bring the group back into Horseshoe Bay dealings. The group would likely be keeping an eye on the trial after Celia’s murder — and potentially on Nancy herself. For those of us who still think there’s something suspicious about Agent Park, having the agent be secretly working for The Road Back could be a way to keep beloved guest star John Harlan Kim involved in the Drewniverse, either on Nancy Drew or on Tom Swift.

Tamura’s Back, Tell A Friend

Colin Bentley/The CW

Poor Tamura really chose the worst possible weeks to be away from the Bay. With Everett’s trial set to kick off soon (maybe even in the finale), it’s safe to say everyone’s favorite sassy detective should be back soon. And with actor Ryan-James Hatanaka completing filming on The Fairly OddParents reboot before the end of Nancy Drew season 3 filming, it’s no surprise that fans are hoping Tamura returns to help fight the utter chaos Temperance has brought to Horseshoe Bay. After all, anyone who can deliver a line about Ace being a “walking haircut” with a straight face needs to make another appearance.

The Tarot Card Predictions

Robert Falconer/The CW

With the finale set to show the endgame Temperance teased back in episode 1, it’s time to revisit her predictions and our picks for which prophecy fits which Drew Crew member.

One of you will be the other’s demise: George

George’s (unintentional) brutal honesty the night of the dance rattled Nick to his core. Aside from leading to their breakup, it caused Nick to reevaluate his entire life’s plan, which was already in a bit of a crisis after he and Addy talked about their trauma. It’s this moment that pushes Nick to the edge, which could lead to his demise (whether a literal demise like his death, or simply another spiral that leads to him leaving Horseshoe Bay).

One of you will betray their true love: Nancy

As we’ve now established, Nancy is in love with Ace and as of the end of episode 12, planned to tell him. But with the new information that Ace is the final piece of Charity’s soul comes difficult questions about how to save him. Nancy has done something against her moral compass before to save Ace, working with Celia despite Ace’s express wishes for her not to do so. While Ace would like to live, he would never ask Nancy to compromise Horseshoe Bay and would willingly sacrifice himself to save her. We think that in order to save Ace, Nancy will do something that will betray Ace’s trust or go against his desires: a classic trope.

Colin Bentley/The CW

One of you will lose your heart: Ace

Whether this is literal or figurative, all signs point to Ace being the person this refers to. The Copperhead is after his heart, and Nancy had a dream about his heart being frozen and cut out before. We don’t believe this show would kill Ace permanently, but there could certainly be a moment he is in peril and “loses” his heart. Crucially, if something happens to Nancy when she tries to save him, or he feels hurt after she saves him against his wishes, this could strain their relationship and cause him to effectively “lose his heart.”

One of you will wreak havoc on this town: Bess

Bess is great at magic, but we’ve seen her spells backfire several times this season, from her protection spell for Ace to her truth spell at the ball. It’s understandable that if she thought a spell could save her friends or Horseshoe Bay, she’d try it no matter the risks.

One of you will forsake what is dearest to you: Nick

As we saw at the end of the last episode, Nick is going through a major crisis of confidence. His relationship with George is on the rocks, and he feels that he led the kids of the youth center into danger. He’s giving up on everything that is dear to him: his role as a mentor for the children, and his love for George. We believe his fears will cause him to make a devastating choice that will lead to harm coming to either Horseshoe Bay or George.

Colin Bentley/The CW

Only one of you will fulfill your destiny. And that one will cause the rest to fall: Ryan

Ryan Hudson has had the biggest character arc of any of the Drew Crew members. If you showed a clip of his first scene and his latest without context, it would not seem like the same person. He’s made major strides and tied up many of his loose ends … which makes him the perfect candidate to either die or be seriously sidelined in the finale. Even more worrisome? His words to Carson about his uncle Josiah’s wish for him to “outrun the family curse and avoid a gruesome demise.”

Ryan is also a Hudson, and while Nancy’s status as the seventh generation Hudson makes her essential to Temperance’s plan, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that his blood would also be important. Ryan could also sacrifice himself to save Nancy, the daughter he adores, in a full circle moment that allows him to make up for failing to save Lucy all those years ago. If something happens to Ryan, either from Temperance or an outside force, it would be fulfilling the destiny Josiah mentioned. It would also have a profound and devastating impact on Nancy, not to mention the rest of the Drew Crew — it could cause “the rest to fall.”
