WATCH: Tom Payne Talks Pizza, Marriage, and ‘Prodigal Son’ on ‘Live with Kelly and Ryan’

This morning on Live with Kelly and Ryan, the hosts were joined by Prodigal Son star Tom Payne where they picked his brain about season two as well as discussed his new haircut, his recent marriage, and more! Check out the video clips below.

With Payne’s transition into the role of Malcolm Bright, he not only had to maintain his American accent (a very convincing one, we might add), but he also had to cut off most of his hair! Prior to Prodigal Son, Payne had very long locks and a beard from his role on The Walking Dead. In the clip below, he discusses which is less maintenance.

While the world has been stuck in quarantine, Payne and his wife, musician Jennifer Akerman, decided not to let that stop their plans to tie the knot. The couple got married on December 21, Payne’s birthday!

Payne shared that he has also perfected the homemade pizza in their pizza oven which they purchased at the beginning of the year. He prefers to put a healthy spin on the dish, leaning away from the “greasier” New York version. Perhaps he’ll share the perfect recipe soon.

Lastly, Payne talked about season 2 of Prodigal Son after a sneak peek was aired (you can find it here) on the show, including the recent news that Catherine Zeta-Jones will begin filming with the cast soon.

Prodigal Son returns Tuesday, January 12 on FOX at 9/8 C.

Final Child Puts a Dark Twist on “My Girl” in New ‘Prodigal Son’ Ainsley Whitly Season 1 Recap

Season 1 of FOX’s hit show Prodigal Son ended with the shocking twist of Ainsley Whitly, the “well adjusted Whitly,” snapping under immense stress and murdering Nicholas Endicott. If that wasn’t enough, fans surely felt a chill up their spine at Martin’s reaction: a proud smile followed by “my girl.” What better song to set a recap of Ainsley’s season 1 journey to than the well known song of the same title, but with a twist!

Debuted exclusively by TVLine, the music video features a much darker twist on “My Girl” from Final Child, a.k.a Jennifer Akerman, wife of Prodigal Son star Tom Payne. An extremely talented musician, Akerman teamed up with Dan Silver to breathe new life into the high energy pop song. Akerman’s take is a darker, more ominous one that also carries some of the signature sounds that Akerman’s fans will recognize. In short, it’s a perfect rendition for the show!

Via social media, Akerman promised that the full version will be available to listen to soon! While you wait, watch the music video below and check out Akerman’s other songs, including her latest release “Dead Romance”, available to stream everywhere!

Prodigal Son returns Tuesday, January 12 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. C on FOX.

Julia Jones, Alano Miller, and More Join ‘Dexter’ Revival Cast

0

Deadline has announced that Showtime’s upcoming Dexter revival has added four new cast members. Joining the limited series is Julia Jones (The Mandalorian), Jack Alcott (The Good Lord Bird), Alano Miller (Sylvie’s Love), and Johnny Sequoyah (Believe). Based on the character descriptions, which you can read below, it’s safe to say the revival (or at least part of it) will be set in upstate New York.

Jones will play Angela Bishop, who’s the first Native American Chief of Police in her town. Her daughter, Audrey Bishop, will be played by Sequoyah. Audrey is a “brash and opinionated” teen. Alcott will take on the role of Randall, someone who will have a meaningful encounter with Dexter. Finally, Miller will play Logan, who is the assistant wrestling coach for the local high school and a sergeant for the Iron Lake Police.

The four join Michael C. Hall and the previously announced Clancy Brown. Deadline also revealed that production for the show will begin sometime next month. The 10-episode season is scheduled to release in Fall 2021 on Showtime.

Dexter originally ran for eight seasons from 2006-2013. It follows Dexter Morgan (Hall), a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Homicide Department who masquerades as a serial killer with a moral compass — he only kills bad guys. You can watch the original eight seasons of Dexter now on Amazon Prime Video.

“Martin Feels Under Appreciated” in New Promo for Season 2, Episode 1 of ‘Prodigal Son’

0

The countdown ends soon, prodigies. Season 2 of Prodigal Son kicks off tomorrow at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on FOX, and of course the show couldn’t resist giving us one last little tease before Malcolm and co.’s adventures return to air.

A new clip from the upcoming season 2 premiere, titled “It’s All in the Execution,” has been released, and it is a doozy. Watch it below if you haven’t already.

While the saw Malcolm was seen holding in previous clips was a big hint, this clip all but gives confirmation that Malcolm will be covering up Ainsley’s murder of Endicott — with some assistance from Martin. Malcolm is also shown to be visiting Martin who is back at Claremont, though how he gets there remains to be seen, as multiple clips have shown him traipsing around in the outside world. Will this shared secret bring father and son closer together? We’ll have to tune in tomorrow to find out.

Prodigal Son returns tomorrow night at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on FOX.

Kevin Feige Confirms Deadpool is Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Holy s@#%! Deadpool has officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

With the Marvel-Fox merger in 2019 came questions about the future of Deadpool and whether or not we’d see him in the MCU. In a recent interview with Collider, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige put that issue to rest. Thank you, 2021.

“It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now … It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.”

Deadpool 3 will be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it will also be maintaining that R-rating that Deadpool requires. Unfortunately, this comes with the confirmation that Deadpool 3 will not begin filming this year, so a release likely won’t arrive until 2023 at the earliest, likely putting it in Marvel’s Phase 5.

With Deadpool joining the MCU, it’s exciting to consider which of our MCU heroes he may interact with. Who do you think the Regenerating Degenerate will come into contact with? Let us know!

Review: Season 2 of ‘A Discovery of Witches’ Is a Magically Alluring Delight

The second season of the fantasy drama A Discovery of Witches has arrived, and it’s bursting at the seams with another round of episodes full of magic, enchanting characters, beautiful sets and scenery, and a splendid romance.

A Discovery of Witches is based on the All Souls trilogy by author Deborah Harkness. In the first season, we met our main characters — the witch Diana Bishop and the vampire Matthew Clairmont. Portrayed by Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode, respectively, the two had electric on-screen chemistry that translated quite beautifully from the pages on which their characters were first born. Watching their uneasy alliance transform into a whirlwind romance was one of the aspects that made the show so compelling to begin with.

Season 2 ventures into new territory for the show. Picking up moments after the season 1 finale, it follows Diana and Matthew as they arrive in London in the year 1590. Meanwhile, their friends and family back in the present day are left to keep the Congregation at bay, amongst other things.

One of the strengths of A Discovery of Witches has always been its production value. As viewers are immersed in a lovely and magical story, they’re also treated to beautiful sets and filming locations. The show previously managed this feat quite seamlessly, even as the story danced across a multitude of locations like England, France, Italy, and the United States. The second season took on a new challenge, though, in maintaining the same aesthetics while the story migrated over 400 years into the past. This was ultimately a success; the version of Elizabethan London (and other surrounding areas) constructed for season 2 was bewitching, to say the least. There are also touch points of familiarity threaded throughout as the season jumps back and forth between present day and the 16th century, which serve as a reverent reminder of the ways in which the world sometimes changes (and yet other times stays the same) as centuries pass by.

Paired with the delightful costume design, it was quite easy for viewers to quickly dive right into the year 1590 alongside Matthew and Diana. The clothing that both of them were outfitted with was an integral factor in helping to sell the fact — for viewers — that they’re no longer in the 21st century. It’s important to recognize the work put in by the costume department for season 2, because they really managed to capture the essence of both characters with Diana’s regal dresses (and her fondness for the ability to wear pants when needed) and Matthew’s dapper leather attire. Not to mention, those responsible for the costumes were also responsible for outfitting an entire team of secondary characters and background actors as well, all of which looked exceptional.

In addition to Matthew and Diana, the first season of A Discovery of Witches contained a multitude of intriguing characters. Leading up to season 2, fans of the book series wondered how the script would address the fact that Shadow of Night is set entirely in the past. With Harkness on board, a present day storyline was written and ran simultaneously alongside Matthew and Diana’s adventures in 1590. This was an excellent choice on behalf of the team behind the show; it recognizes the inherent value and talent of the supporting cast and the important part that they all play in rounding out the full story. It’s easy for television shows and films within this particular genre to miss the mark with the cast sometimes, because a story like this can be unforgiving if a character is not believable or if we as viewers cannot find a way to connect to them. However, with A Discovery of Witches, this show is a unique gem in that the cast is truly spectacular up and down. Though Palmer and Goode are absolutely fabulous leads, we’re equally invested in the lives of the other characters as well — thanks to the actors that are playing them.

The strength of the cast multiplied exponentially in season 2. In addition to being given the opportunity to keep up with the other characters in the present day, we were also introduced to an intriguing assortment of new additions from the 16th century. There are so many characters to sing praise for, like Sheila Hancock’s warm and wise Goody Alsop and James Purefoy’s brilliant and ageless Philippe de Clermont. However, there are two actors that truly stole the show this time around with a hypnotizing magnetism that came across in each and every scene they were in. The first is Tom Hughes, who portrayed the daemon Christopher “Kit” Marlowe. Without giving too much away, Kit has many complicated feelings and carries out quite a few controversial actions this season. Hughes ties in the troubled and unstable brilliance daemons are known for to create a character that, quite frankly, you just can’t look away from. Then, there’s the one and only Steven Cree, who was cast as Matthew’s nephew Gallowglass. Cree’s easy and comfortable rapport with both Palmer and Goode came across magnificently on screen; it felt like he had been a part of the show all along.

Overall, season 2 of A Discovery of Witches was a superb continuation of a captivating and beguiling series. The cast and crew’s dedication to all aspects of the show and the story shines through clearly, and has left us eagerly looking forward to what’s still to come in season 3.

The entirety of season 2 of A Discovery of Witches is now streaming on Now TV and Sky TV for fans in the UK and some parts of Europe. Viewers in North America can catch new episodes weekly on Saturdays via ShudderAMC+, or Sundance Now. Tune in for our weekly recaps of each episode!

‘The Umbrella Academy’ Names New Sparrow Academy Cast Members

Netflix’s hit anti-hero series, The Umbrella Academy, is gearing up to begin filming the third season, and in preparation they’ve released the cast for the newest group of super-humans that were introduced in the final minutes of season 2 — The Sparrow Academy.

The Sparrow Academy and its seven members are shrouded by mystery — why are they there, and are they friend or foe? Fans of the comics will be familiar with the name, but with the introduction of the clan (and the inclusion of Ben) being vastly different than that of the comics, even that may not may help decipher how the Sparrows will be utilized in the television adaption.

Today, details for the characters and actors were released, giving a little insight into the powers and personalities of the seven Sparrows, and yes, one is a cube.

Marcus, Number 1: Played by Justin Cornwell (Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey), Number 1 is the leader (sorry Ben, we thought it would be you, too). Described as “a charming, chiseled, colossus. Honest, virtuous, and demanding, Marcus keeps the family together” (we’re getting major Luther vibes…), he’s a confident, calm and effective leader for Hargreeves’ super-Sparrow bunch.

Ben, Number 2: Look out Diego, the Number 6 you knew and loved has turned into a cold-blooded, skilled tactician. Fans will remember the soft and sweet (and dead) Ben played by Justin H. Min from the first two seasons, but don’t get confused — that’s not who Sparrow Ben is, even though it’s Min’s familiar face playing him. Much like Umbrella’s Number 2, Diego, Ben has a desire to be a leader at any cost. His powers are the same as Umbrella Ben, a vicious squid ready to burst from his chest and throw tentacles at anyone in his way.

Fei, Number 3:  Britne Oldford (The Path) will play Fei, Number 3, “a misanthrope who would rather be alone than spend even a second with you,” however, deep down she just wants a friend. She’s smart and relentless, always the first to figure out a solution and the last to stop until the job is done.

Alphonso, Number 4: Battle hardened and scarred, Jake Epstein (Suits) is Number 4. Alphonso shares a similar wit to Klaus, Umbrella’s Number 4, with a “biting sense of humor” and grand ability to verbally assault anyone who gets in his way. He’s also a sucker for a pizza and six-pack of beer. While Klaus is more a fan of tacos and burritos, one can only hope these two get to share a snack at some point.

Sloane, Number 5: Genesis Rodriguez (The Fugitive) is Number 5 (a Number 5 with a name!). Much like Umbrella’s Number 5, Sloane has an obligation to her family she just can’t seem to shake, but that doesn’t stop her from being a “romantic and a dreamer who feels a higher cosmic calling leaving her eager to see the world and experience a life beyond her upbringing.” She’s got plans, and maybe one day she’ll be brave enough to act on them.

Jayme, Number 6: A loner in a hoodie, Cazzie David (86’ed) is Number 6. With a fear-inducing snarl that will send anyone packing, Jayme is quiet and intelligent, typically seen hanging out with her only friend, Number 4, Alphonso. (Klaus = Number 4, Ben = Number 6, we’re catching on …)

Christopher, Number 7: EXISTENTIAL DREAD INDUCING PSYKRONIUM CUBE (Newcomer) a.k.a Christopher rounds out the Sparrow Academy. He is a cube of unknown origin who “can turn the room freezing cold and induce paralyzing fear.” Okay … we’re listening. He’s the family’s trustworthy mediator and oracle, giving sage advice to those who need it. Christopher is treated as one of the siblings (Vanya is about to be a little upset …) and is a force to be reckoned with. Uh oh…

The Sparrows at first glance look like they will mirror their Umbrella number counterparts, with the Sparrows seemingly a little more … functional? Season 3 is going to be a ride. You can see a few of our theories for season 3 here.

Other cast members confirmed for season 3 are Tom Hopper (Luther), David Castañeda (Diego), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison), Robert Sheehan (Klaus), Aidan Gallagher (Five), Justin H. Min (Ben), Ellen Page (Vanya), Colm Feore (Sir Reginald Hargreeves), and Ritu Arya (Lila).

The Umbrella Academy seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Netflix, no date for Season 3’s release has been revealed yet.

Review: ‘Flinch’ is an Intriguing Thriller From Start to Finish

0

Flinch is a fresh approach to the classic “hitman’s job goes wrong” thriller that will ask viewers what happens when said hitman faces a moral dilemma when there is a seemingly innocent witness. Flinch follows a young hitman, Joe Doyle (Daniel Zovatto), who is chasing his latest target, city council member Ed Terzian (Tom Segura). When the councilman’s assistant Mia (Tilda Cobham-Hervey) witnesses Doyle commit a murder, he knows he should take her out but can’t bring himself to do it. Instead, he takes her back to his house, where he lives with his mother (Cathy Moriarty), while he figures things out. But things get complicated fast as Doyle falls for Mia, realizing quickly that there’s more to her than meets the eye.

Zovatto breathes life into the otherwise quiet and unassuming Joe, who really just wants to do his job and disappear again. He’s a stoic character who, even though he kills people for a living, has a strong moral compass that won’t let him simply kill the intriguing Mia. Instead he kidnaps her, much to the irritation of his highly protective (and sometimes comical) mother who attempts to off Mia herself more than once. But when she realizes Joe wants to keep Mia around, she does lay off the murder attempts and even tries to bond with Mia on more than one occasion. Things continue to devolve when Mia’s sudden disappearance raise suspicions from all parties involved in the hit, and we’re left to wonder exactly who Mia is that so many alarm bells go off. People are looking for her and it forces Joe, Gloria, and even Mia into scrambling to cover his tracks. Zovatto’s portrayal of the conflicted and tortured Joe will keep viewers hooked as he grapples with his feelings for Mia and desire to keep his mother safe and out of the crosshairs now squarely on his back. Cobham-Hervey gives an excellent and realistic performance to Mia’s situation with just enough reserved calm to let us know she’s not your average kidnap victim. She doesn’t have many lines but her faux panic when Joe is in the room followed by a couple clever escape attempts keeps us guessing at why “she didn’t flinch.”

It’s the same reason Joe keeps her alive in the first place, and as a viewer we definitely see it. Mia is much more collected and rational as she thinks on her feet in the impossible situations she finds herself in, and believe me there is more than one. Slowly over the course of the movie, Joe’s feelings deepen while Mia seems to warm up to her captor. The pacing suffers slightly with the big twist happening just 20 minutes before the end of the movie. It’s a great twist but also left me wishing more time was spent fleshing out the backstory, as it was one of the best moments of the film.

Overall, Flinch is one that will speak to fans of crime based thrillers that examine the morality within us all. If it’s all shade of gray, where do we each draw that line? Flinch will open in select theaters on January 15, and will be available to stream on TVOD starting January 21.
