Today marks the first day of filming for the upcoming Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. As a special start of filming treat, Variety broke news of not one, not two, but five casting announcements for the production! Jason Mantzoukas, Virginia Kull, Megan Mullaly, Glynn Turman, and Timm Sharp have all been added in recurring guest star roles for the series.

Jason Mantzoukas (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place) has been cast in the role of Dionysus, a god being punished by serving as a director at Camp Half-Blood. Mr D. may be a god, but he is also quite prickly and irritable (another ironic part of his sentence includes not imbibing in any alcoholic drinks — ironic if you know what he’s the god of).

Kull, best known for works like Super Pumped and Big Little Lies, will portray the strong and loving Sally Jackson, Percy’s mother, who has tried to protect Percy from the dangers of being a demigod.

Turman is set to play the legendary centaur Chiron, trainer of heroes and one Camp Half-Blood’s leaders alongside Mr. D. However, Percy first knows him as Mr. Brunner, his Latin teacher, before he’s introduced into the world of the Olympians. Previous credits of Truman’s include The Wire, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and more.

Sharp is set to portray Gabe Ugliano (yes, we will be calling him Smelly Gabe from this point forward), Sally’s husband and Percy’s mean-spirited, combative stepfather. Notable previous credits include On the Verge and Enlightened.

Lastly, Mullally (Will & Grace) will portray the Fury Alecto — or as Percy knows her, his math teacher with a monstrous attitude, Mrs. Dodds. Mrs. Dodds is one of the first challenges Percy faces in his discovery of his true origins and his journey to Camp Half-Blood.

These five actors and actresses join the previously announced Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri, who will play Percy, Annabeth, and Grover, respectively. As always, stay tuned for more updates!
