The first episode of HBO’s new limited series Scenes from a Marriage premiered last night, bringing with it a wave of charged emotions to set the stage for this five-part story.
Adapted from Ingmar Bergman’s classic Swedish miniseries and developed, written and directed by Hagai Levi, Scenes from a Marriage explores love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage, and divorce through the lens of a contemporary American couple.
Warning: Spoilers for episode 1
“Innocence and Panic” opens with behind-the-scenes footage of star Jessica Chastain as she arrives on set. The crew flurries around her, props coming in left and right, and then the camera flips in an almost seamless transition once the episode truly begins. In a series that aims to have its leads bare themselves with naked honesty while exploring the complicated facets of their relationship, the quiet and unrefined frankness of these opening moments is both fitting and appropriate.
The pacing of the episode has long, continuous scenes that rely heavily on dialogue. In both film and television, this can be a hit or miss move, because added pressure is placed on the actors and the script. Chastain and Isaac’s real life friendship, which is over two decades old, is the driving force of power behind the success of these scenes. There’s a palpable familiarity and trust that lingers unspoken between breaths when Jonathan and Mira communicate.
Jojo Whilden/HBO
At times, there’s a level of discomfort for the audience when watching some of the more difficult scenes between Jonathan and Mira play out. Rather than panning away when the conversation grows awkward or heavy, the camera remains rooted to the spot as the moment continues to unravel. We as viewers have become detached from the whiplash of instantaneous problem-to-solution scene jumps presented in modern media. And it’s why it feels jarring when this doesn’t happen, when the scene holds us underwater as both we and the actors begin to flounder. Scenes from a Marriage disregards this formula because taking a breath for air defeats the purpose of the emotional impact that the series is aiming for. There’s an irony in finding yourself shifting uncomfortably in your own seat at home as you watch Mira doing the same exact thing from her place on the couch beside Jonathan.
As the episode winds down to a close, there are two scenes that stick out in particular: the way that Jonathan pauses and almost crumples in front of the vending machine and Mira’s breakdown once she finally finds herself alone in the exam room. After the hopeful highs and poignant lows scattered throughout their conversation in bed as they discussed their options, seeing them both fall apart individually in the aftermath is heartbreaking. Isaac and Chastain convey their inner turmoil throughout the episode in different ways — Isaac moving fluidly with his deeply expressive eyes and body language and Chastain with the stoic attitude of a woman who’s slowly collapsing from the inside out.
Overall, the first episode of Scenes from a Marriage was a promising introduction to the series, offering a somber and intriguing taste of what’s yet to come. Chastain and Isaac will undoubtedly continue to flaunt their chemistry as scene partners as the storm brewing between Jonathan and Mira rears its ugly head, splintering hairline cracks into deep, vulnerable chasms.
The second episode of Scenes from a Marriage, “Poli,” will premiere on HBO next Sunday, September 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
DECAL’s Covid comedy, Stop and Go (previously titled Recovery at SXSW), will debut in theaters and On Demand this October!
Written by and starring Whitney Call and Mallory Everton, Stop and Go follows two sisters as they head on a cross-country road trip to save her grandmother, and her dog, from a nursing home before their less-than-cautious sister gets there first. It’s “the best road trip of the worst year.” The film is directed by Everton and Stephen Meek.
Call and Everton manage to encapsulate those first few dysphoric weeks of March 2020, ones we’ll all remember very vividly, in a highly relatable and absolutely hilarious way.
Check out our review of the film from the SXSW Film Festival in March and our interview with the team behind the film, Whitney Call, Mallory Everton, and Stephen Meek! It was one of our favorites of the festival!
DECAL
Produced by Sorø Films Production in partnership with BuzzFeed Studios, Stopand Go will be available in theaters and On Demand on October 1. Don’t miss it!

The first trailer for Marvel Studios’ next new series Hawkeye finally arrived today, showcasing the upcoming adventures of Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and his new sidekick Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld).
Prior to the trailer drop, minimal information was known about the series outside of the fact that it would focus on the two archers. Now, quite a few questions have been answered, and other intriguing details have also been teased.
So what did we learn from the Hawkeye trailer?
Hawkeye takes place after Avengers: Endgame
The trailer reveals that the series takes place after Avengers: Endgame, because Clint is looking back on his time as the masked vigilante Ronin and making up for lost time with his family. Clint’s daughter Lila remarks that this is the first Christmas that they’ve had together in years, which hints that the series likely isn’t set too long after Endgame.
It’s a holiday show set around Christmas
Marvel Studios
For those who love Marvel and love watching holiday shows and films, our time has finally come. While the first look photo released back in July teased something festive, the trailer confirms that Hawkeye will be full of holiday spirit galore. At one point, Clint makes a promise to Lila that he’ll be home for Christmas. Now that’s the trope we’ve been waiting for.
How will Clint and Kate meet?
Marvel Studios
In the comics, Kate Bishop is introduced in the 2005 run of Young Avengers. She ends up taking up the mantle of Hawkeye in Clint’s absence. In the series, the trailer reveals that the two will meet when Clint catches her masquerading as Ronin (and she seems to be quite starstruck to meet the famous archer).
The repercussions of Ronin
Marvel Studios
In the five years following the Blip, Clint went on a grief-fuelled rampage when he adopted the alter ego of a dangerously skilled masked vigilante named Ronin. This was revealed in Avengers: Endgame when Natasha tracked him down in Tokyo while he was in the midst of taking out his latest criminal targets.
It makes sense that Clint would have made more than a few enemies during that time, and this would only be further exacerbated by the reappearance of Ronin via Kate. The trailer shows Clint and Kate facing off against several hostile parties in different scenes, which is likely a repercussion stemming from the trail of bodies Ronin left in his wake.
Clint Barton’s trademark sass will be present
Between temporarily losing his family after the events of Avengers: Infinity War and subsequently losing beloved teammates in Avengers: Endgame (including his best friend, Natasha, during that heartbreaking scene on Vormir), the end of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was not kind to Clint Barton. While we can expect that Clint will still be recovering from these traumatic events, the trailer also teases that his trademark sass — something that has been a penchant of his character since the beginning — will be making a comeback.
Maya Lopez aka Echo
Marvel Studios
Alaqua Cox will be portraying Maya Lopez in the series. In the comics, Echo is a Native American character that was born deaf. One of her many skills includes her photographic reflexes, which allow her to perfectly duplicate physical movement and actions (something recently seen in the MCU via Black Widow with the character Taskmaster).
In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, the trailer briefly shows a shot of Maya.
Lucky the Pizza Dog
Marvel Studios
It’s clear that the show will be taking inspiration from Matt Fraction and David Aja’s critically acclaimed Hawkeye series, and one of the most exciting details plucked from the pages of the comics is Lucky the Pizza Dog. True to the comics, it looks like this live-action version of the loyal pup will also be missing his left eye.
Eleanor Bishop
Marvel Studios
The woman shown near the end of the trailer is Vera Farmiga’s Eleanor Bishop, Kate’s mother.
Tracksuit Draculas
Marvel Studios
Fra Fee will be portraying a character named Kazi in the series. In the comics, Kazimierz Kazimierczak aka the Clown is an enemy of Hawkeye and the leader of the Tracksuit Draculas — a name coined by Clint for the aforementioned New York mafia. The trailer gives us a few glimpses of these tracksuit-wearing characters, who seem to have it out for Clint/Ronin.
Rogers the Musical
Marvel Studios
Steve Rogers may no longer be at the forefront of the MCU after his decision to go back in time to live a life with Peggy Carter and pass on his vibranium shield to Sam Wilson in Avengers: Endgame. However, the MCU won’t be forgetting him and his legacy anytime soon. In the opening moments of the trailer, an advertisement is shown for Rogers the Musical. The show then takes things a step further by showing a brief glimpse of the musical in action, with Steve Rogers, Loki, and the Avengers putting on a show that would certainly sweep Thanos off of his feet. The only question that remains is: will we get to see a full cut of this epic production?
Don’t miss Hawkeye when it premieres exclusively on Disney+ November 24, and stay tuned for our coverage!
It feels like it’s been ages since the Hawkeye series was first teased at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, but just over two years later, the first trailer has finally arrived.
Hawkeye sees the return of the archer Clint Barton (portrayed by Jeremy Renner), one of the founding members of the Avengers. We’ll also finally meet a character who has made a name for herself on the pages of Marvel Comics throughout the years — Kate Bishop (portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld). First appearing in the 2005 Young Avengers series, Kate took on the mantle of Hawkeye in Clint’s absence. The two later teamed up in Matt Fraction and David Aja’s critically acclaimed 2012 Hawkeye series.
Watch the first official trailer for Hawkeye below. Set to premiere in late November, it looks like Hawkeye will be bringing with it plenty of festive holiday spirit alongside Clint and Kate’s action-packed adventures.
The opening of the trailer confirms that Hawkeye will take place sometime after Avengers: Endgame, because Clint will be dealing with the repercussions of his years as the vigilante Ronin. In a moment that’s fitting given the holiday setting of the series, Clint promises his daughter that he’ll be home for Christmas. As for Kate Bishop, it appears that Clint will meet her when he catches her masquerading as Ronin.
Fans of Fraction and Aja’s aforementioned comics can rest easy knowing that the beloved star Lucky the Pizza Dog will be making an appearance. In the meantime, we’ll be sitting here hoping that there’s a full cut of Rogers the Musical.
The first teaser poster for the show has been revealed, too.
Marvel Studios
The cast also includes Vera Farmiga as Kate’s mother Eleanor, Fra Fee as Kazi, Tony Dalton as Jack Duquesne, Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez, and Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez. Florence Pugh will reprise has role as Yelena Belova.
The series is helmed by Rhys Thomas and directing duo Bert and Bertie.
The first episode of Hawkeye will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on November 24. Stay tuned for our coverage!

WandaVision launched Marvel’s Phase 4, as well as their growing list of television series coming to Disney+. Due to pandemic delays and shuffles, WandaVision was pushed front and center to debut an all-new era for the massively successful franchise after its Infinity Saga conclusion with Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Fans were heading into the unknown as three of our core six heroes had fallen in those final films. And WandaVision‘s premise was their whackiest to date.
Deciding to focus on Wanda Maximoff’s insurmountable grief versus a classic supervillain, WandaVision reimagined the superhero genre. Featuring nine episodes, each took viewers through a different decade of television starting with the 50s and ending in current times. With each new episode came an entirely new set, new costumes, and even new performance styles, stretching the limits of television in ways that had never been seen before.
WandaVision starred Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Kathryn Hahn as Agnes/Agatha Harkness, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, and Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo.
