In this episode of The Expanse, Bobby is sent aboard the Roci, Marco sets a trap on Ceres Station, and Filip’s punishment for his friend’s death is decided. Keep reading for everything that goes down in “Azure Dragon.”
Filip’s Punishment (or lack thereof)
Once Marco has found out what Filip has done, he wants to dish out his son’s punishment himself. Only, there isn’t much of a punishment at all. Marco fishes him a made up story, hands him his weapon, and tells him to report for duty once back on the ship. Marco insists that the “embarrassment” Filip has become is punishment enough.
Filip, in an effort to make things right, wants to compensate Yohan’s family for what happened, and it works … to a degree. They’ll send his family new mining nets and a month’s worth of supplies. He notifies the family with a message, putting his feelings for his friend aside.
Bobby Boards the Roci
With the information Naomi collected on The Azure Dragon, Avasarala and company have determined the Dragon is a rockhopper rigged with scopes, antenna, and sensor rays. Bobbie tells them their new mission is to capture the ship for its data instead of destroying it. Holden realizes they’re an independent ship, so if they mess up, it’s not on the Marines or Earth. Bobbie insists that it’s about morale; they need a break in the war.
Once that’s all settled, Amos has news of his own for Bobbie: Clarissa Mao is on the ship; he rescued her on his trip to Earth. Bobbie notes she is a conflicted felon, Holden is quick to remark back that Amos trusts her. As Bobbie excuses herself to eat, Holden inquires about missing ships in the ring. There was Martian intel that a number of ships went dark after entering. They chalked it up to them joining Marco, but it wasn’t confirmed. Holden shows Bobbie footage of the Barkeith disappearing and asks if he can see the intel, Bobbie promises to get it to him.
Michio’s New Crew
Michio is preparing to join the crew of another fleet that Drummer promises will keep her safe until their return. They don’t engage in the war, they just transfer supplies over and do little odds and ends jobs Marco assigns to them. Drummer gets an idea when he mentions supplies, though. They’re running low so she devises a plan to raid the supply depots with the help of The Golden Bow ships that are working against Marco.
The Capture of The Azure Dragon
The Rocinante is on The Azure Dragon’s flight path. Just before they make it to them, the ship catches sight of them and bolts. Holden wants to go for their original plan of destroying them, but Bobbie is giving the orders and the order is to capture. Holden begrudgingly agrees and they eventually get hold of the ship.
Naomi suffers a panic attack about going into orbit, so Clarissa takes over her job. It’s clear she’s suffering, so with the help of Naomi from inside the Roci, they bypass the Dragon while Holden and Amos breach the ship. Once in, they gain access to every single path the Dragon has taken.
Marco’s Trap
Marco receives word that the Azure Dragon crew died and the Rocinante has captured the ship and all of its data. If everything remains intact, they’ll be able to locate all the rocks that have yet to launch. He’s not nervous, though. Once they redeploy their fleets to come after Marco, his own fleet will be lying in wait.
New episodes of The Expanse premiere every Friday on Prime Video.
In an announcement fans weren’t expecting, Grishaverse author Leigh Bardugo announced a new graphic novel, Demon In The Wood! Today, on her Instagram and on Good Morning America, she shared the cover and release date with her followers.
For those that aren’t aware, Bardugo is the author of several series, including the Shadow and Bone trilogy, Six of Crows books, King of Crows books, and several others. These books have been affectionately named the Grishaverse. After the success of these series, it’s hard to believe that this new release will be the first graphic novel.
Demon In The Wood is a prequel to the world we know in Shadow and Bone. The graphic novel will focus on the Darkling, or as some may know him, General Kirigan. However, this book will have readers meeting the Darkling long before he took up the name of Kirigan. Demon In The Wood will begin hundreds of years before the events of Shadow and Bone, back when the famous Darkling was just a young man. This young Darkling finds himself gifted with extraordinary powers and faced with the choice of what to do with them.
The gorgeous cover art of Demon In The Wood is a result of Bardugo partnering with artist Dani Pendergast to give this brand new story a vivid life. Grishaverse fans will be happy to know that the wait for this graphic novel isn’t terribly long; Demon In The Wood will hit shelves on September 27, 2022.
The pre-order link for Demon In The Wood is live now and can be found here. If you are curious about the Grishaverse and want to know more, check out any or all of the books listed earlier in the article. If you aren’t much of a reader, then watching season one of Shadow and Bone on Netflix might be a better fit for you. Ben Barnes does an excellent job of bringing the character of the Darkling to life. These stories have created such a rich world filled with beautifully written characters, and fans can’t wait to learn more. Make sure to follow Nerds & Beyond to stay up to date!
The December 16 episode of The Vampire Diaries universe series, Legacies, marked the final appearance from Kaylee Bryant’s Josie Saltzman.
Bryant has been an integral part of Legacies for four seasons. First introduced in The Originals in child form, Josie and her twin Lizzie are siphon witches. Over the course of four seasons, Josie has really come into her own as a character, and her arc this season proves that where she is headed is hopefully greener pastures.
In this week’s episode, Josie finally comes to the realization that she can’t save Hope, who is still very much associated with The Salvatore School, the one place she’s trying to get away from. So, she purchases a one-way bus ticket straight out of Mystic Falls, leaving her friends, family, and girlfriend behind.
Hopefully, this isn’t the last of Josie Saltzman, but if it is, she’s been a beacon of light and hope for so many that see themselves in her, and that’s all thanks to the wonderful portrayal by Bryant.
After the death of one of his beloved koi fish, Marty is finally tuned in to just how little Ike cares about him after 30 years. Finally starting to free himself from Ike’s spell, Marty went against Ike’s wishes and moved AFC to New Jersey, firing him in the process.
It’s finale time, let’s see if Marty frees himself completely or if Ike somehow manages to get the last laugh in episode 8 of The Shrink Next Door.
Making Amends
With Ike now gone from his life, Marty is realizing just how badly he screwed up with everyone around him. He truly has no one. He starts by asking Bruce to lunch, which is awkward and uncomfortable for both of them after 20 plus years of Marty undermining him for Ike’s wishes. Marty continues to play a voicemail from Ike on his machine, likely hoping there’s a new message to listen to before it, but it’s always just Ike asking if Marty still plans to attend his sessions. He tries to call Phyllis, but chickens out at the end and pretends to be someone else, with Phyllis reiterating she wants nothing to do with her brother.
He does, and Ike then asks him to be his best man at a vow renewal ceremony for him and Bonnie. The catch? Bonnie doesn’t know about this vow renewal ceremony yet. It’s all a ploy to get back into Marty’s good graces.
In his quest to continue trying to reconnect with people from his past, Marty finds Nancy, his niece, on Facebook with the help of Bruce. They meet at a coffee shop and Marty attempts to talk to her and fails. She’s a grown woman now, and she wanted an apology she never got. She leaves angrily and tells him not to contact her, or her mother, again.
Finally, Marty makes his way to the frame store, searching for Hannah after their failed date the night of his heart attack. Of course, it’s been decades now and she no longer works there, but when Marty asks Joe about what happened he finally tells Marty about what Ike had told Hannah. That it was Ike that told Hannah not to contact him again.
Realization finally dawns on Marty; Ike has been doing nothing but isolating him from every other person for 30 years in order to keep him all to himself.
Make Him Dead to Me
Apple TV+
Marty commits to kicking Ike out of his life, and his first step is changing the locks on the Hampton house. When he hears a car pull up, Marty runs and hides, anticipating Ike, but it’s Phyllis.
She’s furious at him for seeing Nancy behind her back, and he apologizes. He just wants to be back in their lives. But Phyllis isn’t having it. She’s also appalled at the state of their home, and even more upset when she sees the beloved cherry tree gone. Marty then details to her the changes they made, and she’s disgusted by the way the house seemingly belongs to Ike and Bonnie. And how Marty allowed himself to be treated.
Marty tells her again he just wants to be back in their lives, and Phyllis has a moment of reprieve in her ire when Marty tells her he wants Ike to be dead to him, just as Phyllis had considered Marty dead to her for all these years. That night, they burn Ike’s things from the house outside, including the $20,000 baseball from the gala.
Then, Ike shows up.
The Spell is Broken
Ike and Marty get into it, mainly over Ike’s possessions that are currently in a burn pile. For a moment it seems as if Ike might still win, trying to rehash his 27-year-old argument that Marty and Phyllis’ relationship is toxic. However, Marty stays true to what he knows is right and he screams at Ike as he details the damage he’s done. Marty has lost his family, his house, his business, all for Ike, who feels nothing for him. Miriam had been right all those years ago.
Ike grabs the last book manuscript left and takes off, telling Marty he’s nothing without him. Meanwhile, Phyllis is smashing a car with a croquet club and when Ike comes out she tells him that’s for the last 27 years. Except for one issue, that wasn’t his car she smashed.
One Year Later
Ike has stayed away from Marty, and Marty has his family back. A new cherry tree has been planted and Phyllis, her kids, and her grandkids have all gathered to celebrate at the Hampton house. But Marty isn’t the same. When the front door is left open, he tries to push his anxiety from his mind, but he can’t. He runs back to the entryway and slams the door close, locking both locks before rejoining the table. Undoubtedly afraid of Ike sneaking his way back in through an unguarded entry.
At least Phyllis is thankful to have her brother back in her life, and Marty is enjoying having his family back.

In the end, Marty gets the last laugh. Ike’s license is revoked and Marty finally walks away, despite Ike’s last-ditch attempt to make amends. Marty ended up paying Ike 3.2 million dollars over the course of 27 years, not including all that Marty did for him. And Marty wasn’t the only one, or even the one who gave the most. But in the end, Marty won.

Welcome to another day of Nerds Gets Cheery, a series in which we’re looking back on some of our favorite holiday films and television episodes during the most wonderful time of the year!
While a vast majority of holiday films are often focused on happy, joyous times, today’s pick is all about finding a moment of peace and humanity amongst the horrors of war. Released in 2005, Joyeux Noël (which means “Merry Christmas” in French) is a World War I drama based on the Christmas truce of 1914. The film, which was written and directed by Christian Carion, is told through the eyes of the German, Scottish, and French soldiers (the languages of which are all presented throughout) in the thick of battle. It boasts an all-star cast, including the likes of Diane Kruger, Benno Fürmann, Guillaume Canet, Daniel Brühl, Gary Lewis, Alex Ferns, and more.
A war film doesn’t exactly scream holiday cheer, so why is Joyeux Noël a must-watch for the month of December? Because despite the dismal reality of the overall subject matter, it captures the true spirit of Christmas. The movie was inspired by real events, when numerous sections of the Western Front participated in an unofficial ceasefire and peacefully met in no-man’s-land to celebrate Christmas. The opposing troops sang carols with one another, exchanged goods, and even played a game of soccer. Joyeux Noël serves as an important, introspective look at the utter absurdity of war and its politics, and it’s a reminder of the natural human connection we all share — regardless of where we’re from.
Sony Pictures
As a clever way to mirror the sense of unity that it depicts, the movie traipses between the trenches of all three different groups of soldiers. This lets audiences establish their own meaningful connections with the characters, diving into their individual lives and backstories. In turn, the moment that we see them all meet carries a much heavier impact than it would have otherwise. And it makes it even more heartbreaking when their superiors learn of what they all did (or didn’t) do and force them to be enemies once more. These events may have happened over one hundred years ago, but the message the film carries is still achingly relevant to this day.
Given that Joyeux Noël takes place months after the start of a war that would ultimately rage on for four years, there’s a poignant awareness for viewers that the peace we see is only temporary. But as fleeting as it may have been, it’s more than worth it to watch and experience the intense, tear-jerking feelings of elation, hope, and disbelief that it inspires in viewers as the German, French, and Scottish soldiers tentatively begin their truce and find kinship on the battlefield.
Stay tuned throughout the month of December for more holiday film and television recommendations from Nerds Gets Cheery!

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home
Spider-Man: No Way Home is finally here. The third film in Tom Holland’s tenure as the famed web-slinger sees Peter Parker grappling with a monumental issue: his secret identity has been revealed, and many people no longer see him as a hero thanks to Mysterio’s carefully laid plot to frame him in Far From Home. Peter seeks out help from Doctor Strange, but the stakes only end up growing higher and more dangerous than he could have ever imagined.
Following two and a half hours of what will most certainly be regarded as one of Marvel Studios’ most exciting, advantageous, and satisfying endeavors to date, audiences were treated to two credits scenes.
To understand the mid-credits scene, we first need to circle back to another film released a couple of months ago — Venom: There Let There Be Carnage.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage‘s credits scene depicts Eddie and Venom having a conversation about the latter’s 80 billion light-years of hive knowledge across universes. When Venom offers to give Eddie a taste of what the symbiotes have experienced, the room suddenly begins to go fuzzy. Without warning, their shoddy accommodations suddenly transform into a far nicer hotel room. Clueless as to where they are, Venom assures Eddie that it wasn’t him. Eddie turns to look at the TV screen, which is playing the Daily Bugle news segment where J. Jonah Jameson reveals Spider-Man’s true identity.
There was no explanation for how Eddie and Venom had found themselves in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Earth-199999, but audiences were left excitedly speculating over what this all could mean. While Tom Holland’s Spider-Man calls the MCU home, Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock and his symbiote pal Venom hail from Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. So what exactly did Marvel Studios and Sony have up their sleeves?
Sony Pictures
No Way Home‘s mid-credits scene picks back up shortly after where the Let There Be Carnage scene left off. We see Eddie sitting at a bar across from a bartender portrayed by Cristo Fernández (cue the Ted Lasso fans saying, “Dani Rojas! Football is life!” under their breaths in the theater). Eddie is beside himself as he learns about the various superheroes that the MCU has to offer, and Venom sounds less than impressed when he hears about the big purple guy who likes gems. Clearly wanting more information, Eddie decides that he wants to go have a chat with Peter Parker in New York. However, before he can do so, Doctor Strange’s spell kicks in and he’s sent back to his own universe.
It initially appeared that perhaps Eddie and Venom’s presence in the MCU was just a quick cameo to further add to the excitement of the film, but something very important was left behind on top of the bar: a tiny piece of Venom.
Sony and Marvel Studios knocked it out of the park with No Way Home, crafting an unbelievably epic crossover with iconic villains from Sony’s Spider-Verse and two people that we’ve all been anxiously waiting to see slinging webs on the big screen again — Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. So taking all of that into consideration, it’s not unreasonable to assume that the alien symbiote may now be slated for a future appearance (outside of a credits scene) in the MCU as well.
It remains to be seen if this means that the remaining piece of Venom will find a new host in the MCU, and whether or not this will have any further connections to the character of Eddie Brock and/or actor Tom Hardy. While it’s incredibly difficult to imagine anyone else being able to play Eddie and Venom to the absolute perfection that Hardy does, the idea of seeing Spider-Man battle it out with his comic nemesis in the world of the MCU is very tempting, to say the least.
The post-credits scene that later followed included another exciting surprise: the first official teaser for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is due to hit theaters next May.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in theaters. Stay tuned for our review!
The official trailer for Big Gold Brick has finally arrived, accompanied by a poster for the film as well.
Written and directed by Brian Petsos, Big Gold Brick recounts the story of fledgling writer Samuel Liston and his experiences with Floyd Deveraux, the enigmatic middle-aged father of two who enlists Samuel to write his biography. But the circumstances that lead up to this arrangement in the first place are quite astonishing — and efforts to write the biography are quickly stymied by ensuing chaos in this darkly comedic, genre-bending film.
The film stars Emory Cohen, Andy Garcia, Megan Fox, Lucy Hale, and Oscar Isaac.
Watch the trailer below.
As if the film’s premise wasn’t intriguing enough, the trailer promises that audiences are in for what appears to be a wildly weird and hilarious ride with this upcoming feature from Samuel Goldwyn Films.
Big Gold Brick will be available in theaters, On Demand, and on digital on February 25, 2022.
