‘The Boys’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 6 “Herogasm”

Butcher has reached a new low, taking Temp Compound V and teaming up with a Supe, and now Soldier Boy is on Homelander’s radar after blowing up a block in Manhattan. But let’s put all that aside because it’s time for “Herogasm.”

Trouble for Noir

The return of Soldier Boy spells trouble for Black Noir, as he’s a former member of Payback just like Crimson Countess. And clearly, Soldier Boy has it out for each and every one of his former teammates. After Homelander confirms it is indeed Soldier Boy back from the dead, Noir cuts his Vought tracking chip from his arm in the elevator before running off. No doubt looking for a place to lay low until Homelander takes Soldier Boy out.

Homelander is uncharacteristically upset at the loss of Noir, but the Deep comes bearing good news, he knows where Soldier Boy is headed next. He gives Deep permission to scope it out and tells him to call him as soon as Soldier Boy shows up.

A Hard Time Adjusting

Nothing can prepare you for a 40-year jump in time, but a mix of weed, whiskey, and benzos certainly can help. Hughie and Butcher are attempting to bring Soldier Boy up to speed on exactly what GPS, Bluetooth, and the internet are, and Soldier Boy has no choice but to team up with the two Supe hunters to get the job done. Soldier Boy agrees to the terms, the locations of Payback for help taking out Homelander.

Hughie confirms that Soldier Boy’s explosions are completely involuntary. He blacks out when it happens and has no recollection.

Butcher gets the location of the two more members of Payback: the TNT twins. Butcher and Hughie Supe up while Soldier Boy suits up and they get ready to head out.

MM and Starlight on the Case

Realizing they’ve only got each other, Annie and MM prep to head out to Vermont, where MM has located the TNT twins (uh oh). Of course, Homelander also knows where they are thanks to the Deep and Mrs. Deep. And Butcher, Hughie, and Soldier Boy are also on their way there.

Annie has to take a small detour for a public talk show appearance to reassure the public the supervillain situation is very much under Homelander’s control. Afterward, Victoria offers to catch up where she spills that she knows Hughie is fully aware she’s a Supe. She wants to team up: Starlight’s social media reach to help her get her message out and she’ll do what she can to help them take down Homelander. Annie refuses.

A-Train vs Blue Hawk Part 2

A-Train is rightfully furious after Blue Hawk’s outburst in Trenton, which resulted in Nate becoming paralyzed. He wants charges brought–justice served–but Ashley is unwilling to do anything more than 12 weeks of sensitivity training. He threatens he’s going to go search him out himself via his chip, but Ashley reminds him of all the trouble he himself has called, murders included.

Frenchie Can’t Catch a Break

Frenchie, Kimiko, and now Cherie are all taken captive by Little Nina. She brings them all to an abandoned warehouse, where Little Nina tells Frenchie he has to choose between Kimiko and Cherie, one lives and one dies. Of course, he can’t. Kimiko, even sans powers, gets herself free and rips through Little Nina’s henchmen, Cherie also gets herself free to help, but not before Little Nina could escape.

As Frenchie cleans Kimiko’s wounds, she comes to the realization that the V never turned her into a monster, it was always her. Frenchie assures her she isn’t a monster.

Herogasm

Deep arrives to the TNT twins first, and they’re hosting the 70th annual Herogasm. Annie and MM arrive next, but not before MM finally reveals the source of his OCD. It was Soldier Boy. When Soldier Boy killed his grandfather, it scarred him so deeply that his rituals began in hopes that every time he performed them, it would keep Soldier Boy away from the rest of his family. He needs to get Soldier Boy so he can finally be free.

MM is greeted by a long, old friend at the door, Love Sausage. He notes that Frenchie will be devastated missing Herogasm, it was something he’d always wanted to see. Soldier Boy, Butcher, and Hughie have also arrived, and are scoping the place out from a distance, Soldier Boy revealing that he was the one who started Herogasm all the way back in ’52 with Liberty.

Annie finds the Deep having sex with an…octopus, documenting the occasion for future blackmail use. Deep tells her that Homelander sent him, and Annie knows he’s on his way, endangering this mission completely.

Hughie teleports into the house to scope the place out and finds the twins, running into A-Train who came looking for Blue Hawk. After all this time, A-Train finally apologizes to Hughie for killing Robin, now finally affected by the damage Supes can do. Hughie punches him across the face and A-Train is shocked by the power behind it, unknowing that Hughie is on V. Annie pulls Hughie away and begs him to help start clearing people out, because Homelander is on the way and when he and Soldier Boy get into it, it’ll be a massacre.

Instead, Hughie teleports himself and Annie away, saving her and her alone from any potential Homelander vs. Soldier Bay danger. All he wants is to be the one to save her for once.

MM runs into Soldier Boy first, attempting to gas him with the formula MM tried to replicate from the Russians. It doesn’t work. He’s completely unapologetic when MM tells him that he killed his family, too. But before Soldier Boy could get his hands on MM, Butcher comes to divert him to the threat, telling Soldier Boy “not him.” MM points out the hypocrisy of Butcher getting his revenge by taking out Homelander, but he can’t get his on Soldier Boy. He whacks Butcher numerous times with a baseball bat, but on V it doesn’t even make Butcher flinch.

Soldier Boy finds the twins and they tell him that Noir was the one that gave him up to the Russians. Then, that triggering song comes on the radio, and down goes the house, so ending the 70th Herogasm.

The carnage is substantial, but from the rubble comes A-Train who finally gets his hands on Blue Hawk. He drags him down the street at superspeed, killing him easily, but as the doctors had warned him, any run could be his last. He goes down, his heart thumping in his ears.

Homelander vs. The Boys

Homelander arrives shortly after the explosion, squishing poor Termite in the process, RIP. He retells to Soldier Boy how much he emulated him as a kid, and Soldier Boy could care less, in fact, he sees Homelander as inferior. And we all know how that usually ends. Those two begin the fight one-on-one, but Butcher steps in to help and Homelander is shocked as he realizes that Butcher is Suped up when he takes some laser eye beams to the chest. Now it’s Butcher and Soldier Boy vs. Homelander until Hughie comes in to lend a hand. And between the three of them they get him down and Soldier Boy begins to charge up that Russian weapon in his chest, but he’s too slow. Homelander manages to wrestle free of Butcher and Hughie’s grips, flying through the ceiling in the nick of time.

Annie Makes a Move

In a last-ditch effort to get the world to see the truth behind Vought and Homelander, she makes a video from the carnage of Herogasm, telling her millions of social media followers the truth about what’s really going on. Soldier Boy is out there, and he’s dangerous, and Vought is trying to cover it up. And she’s no longer Starlight, she quits.

The first six episodes of the third season of The Boys are now streaming exclusively on Prime Video. Catch the next episode on Friday, July 1, and stay tuned for all of our coverage on the series, including episodic recaps and more.

‘Walker’ Recap: Season 2, Episode 20 “Something’s Missing”

The season 2 finale of Walker aired tonight, and there were a lot of big moments! Questions were finally answered about the fire and Marv Davidsons’ death, Stella graduates, Cordell goes missing, and more.

Let’s dive in!

The Walkers, Geri, The Davidsons, and The Truth

The episode opens up with the Walker family making breakfast together and talking about how Stella is ready to graduate. As they’re talking, Cordell gets a text from Geri that they need to talk, and Cordell leaves to meet her.

Geri and Cordell meet up at the Side Step, and Cordell tells her that she’s the only one who will get the Davidsons to talk about cutting the saddle. Cordell and Geri stage a huge fight and Geri calls Gale to come and get her.

Gale takes Geri back to the ranch with Denise, and Geri talks to Gale alone and asks about Marv. Gale gets upset and storms out, and Geri calls Cordell who tells her to get Gale to take her to the barn, where she might tell the truth. Gale later comes out and apologizes to Geri, and Geri asks her to take her to the barn.

The Hunt and Trey’s Offer

Back at the Ranger station, Larry and Cassie are going over who was arrested at the safe house, and Cassie talks about a bad feeling. They agree to keep who knows about it small. Trey walks in, and Larry won’t let him know. However, he does tell Trey that he talked to the Governor’s office, and they’re willing to use his military experience as time served as a trooper, so Larry asks him if he’d like to join as a Texas Ranger. Trey tells him he needs to think about it.

Trey’s New Neighbor

Trey calls his mom to talk about the offer, and she tells him she was relieved when he left the military. As he steps out into the hallway, the door across from him opens and Cassie steps out. We find out that she moved into an apartment across from him.

Cassie’s Date

Cassie leaves to go on a date at a bar. The date seems to go well, but the man asks what she does and that she hasn’t mentioned her job. He jokes about her being a cop, but she doesn’t say anything. She jokes back, saying he also hasn’t mentioned it. The man gets up to use the restroom, Cassie sees a gun in his belt near his back, and an employee tells her that he ran through the kitchen and left. Cassie realizes that she was being watched.

Graduation

Stella, Todd, and Colton are all sitting for Graduation practice, and Trey and Augie are watching. The three of them seem on good terms, and Colton teases Stella about having to tutor Todd.

Liam’s Future

Abeline, Bonham, and Liam talk and they ask Liam what he’s going to do. Liam’s unsure at the moment. Liam compliments Bonham on his work ethic and working on the land.

The Fire

Geri and Gale go to the barn where it’s dark, and Gale sets a lantern down inside of it as they talk. Gale tells Geri that the night Denise and Cordell were in the barn she and Marv went looking for the kids and Marv told her that Geri was alive, but that she had a good life.

Gale says she got upset, and hit Marv with the lantern, knocking him out and starting the fire. Gale ran and locked the door, and said she didn’t know about Frank either.

Geri knocks over the lantern in present-day when she and Gale are talking, and another fire starts. Cordell is on the way to the barn when he sees the barn on fire. He runs to the barn and finds Geri distraught, and Gale is unconscious but Geri can’t reach her. Cordell runs in and gets Gale from the fire and runs out, saving her life.

Later, the entire Walker family, as well as the Davidsons, are there after police and medics are called. Gale is being tended to by paramedics. The Walker family talks about how the whole time Cordell thought he was to blame for Marv’s death, but it wasn’t his fault at all.

Cordell goes to talk to Gale and she said she’ll confess to everything. She thanks Cordell for saving her life. Denise is there, and she tells Cordell she should have known it was never his fault.

Abeline goes to talk to Gale, and Gale apologizes to Abeline and that she never hated her, but she wished she was her, as the police take her away.

Denise feels like she doesn’t know what’s real anymore. Stella and Colton are looking on, and Stella convinces him to go talk to his parents. Colton goes over to Denise and Dan, and Denise apologizes to Colton and confesses to him that she cut the saddle. Denise apologizes to Dan for how she treated him.

Geri and Cordell talk and Geri tells Cordell that they just tried for a relationship way too soon.

Coming Back Home

The Walkers rightfully move back into the ranch and Cordell and Stella bond over playing a board game that they haven’t played since the night of Emily’s death.

Liam and Bonham talk at the ranch and Liam talks about how much he loves the family and the ranch. He alludes to the ranch being his future.

Something’s Coming

Cassie arrives at the barn where Larry is. She tells him about the date, and she said something else is coming.

Trey, Liam, and Cordell meet up to go for a run. Cordell takes off first, and Liam and Trey are racing after him. At one point they lose him, and when they arrive back at the ranch where Stella is, they notice Cordell never came back. The camera pans to a van speeding off of the property with an unconscious and tied-up Cordell in the back.

Walker‘s 3rd season is set to air this fall on The CW. You can catch up on the show now on The CW app!

‘Tom Swift’ Recap: Season 1, Episode 4 “…And the Chocolate Cowboys”

In this week’s Tom Swift, Tom and Lino head to Oklahoma to track down the next capsule piece, but they run into some trouble. Meanwhile, Zenzi tries to charm Eskol to learn his plans. Read on to find out what happens in “…And the Chocolate Cowboys.”

The Next Piece

On the way to Oklahoma, Tom shows Zenzi a new piece of tech. Zenzi reads up on Eskol and prompts an argument with Isaac. They hear a noise and find that Lino stowed away on the jet. Tom scolds him and wants to turn back, but Lino convinces Tom to let him stay. When they land, Eskol calls Zenzi about dinner, and she proposes they have it at Swift manor. She thinks it will be a chance to find out his plans. So, she and Isaac will fly back while Tom and Lino search for the capsule piece.

Tom Griscom/The CW

A man named Calvin greets Tom and Lino and brings them to his place. Lino starts asking about photos and Calvin happily talks about all but one. When Tom and Lino leave, Lino says he knows where the capsule piece is, thanks to Calvin’s question avoidance. They find the piece, and Calvin and a few others find them and aren’t happy. The piece creates a “magic” tree sap that Calvin wants to use to revitalize the town. Tom tries to take the piece, but more men surround him and Lino, so they leave.

Zenzi’s Dinner

Isaac helps Zenzi finish getting prepped for dinner when he has a flashback to a former partner. He emphasizes to Zenzi how serious this mission is before Eskol and his entourage arrive. Zenzi jumps right into business with Isaac in her ear telling her to stop. When Eskol heads to the dining room, she removes her earpiece. While Zenzi and Eskol talk, Isaac tries to pick up the conversation from another source when he has another flashback.

Zenzi and Eskol move to the fireplace where they continue talking. When Eskol leans in to kiss Zenzi, she excuses herself. She finds Eskol’s bag and digs through it, finding a sheet with abbreviations and coordinates. She takes a photo just before one of Eskol’s guys catches her.

Find Lino

Tom makes a device — an infrasonic cannon — that will safely knock out the men guarding the capsule piece. He and Lino head back, and Lino uses the cannon while Tom goes for the piece. But when he does, two men take Lino, and Tom only finds the broken cannon. He gets a video call from Calvin telling him to meet at high noon near the tree. Tom calls Isaac for help, who’s becoming overwhelmed as he tries to keep an eye on Zenzi.

Eskol’s guys question Zenzi, who claims she just wanted to see that Eskol wasn’t lying when he mentioned Native Son. However, his entourage grows increasingly threatening. Meanwhile, Isaac as an intense flashback of the woman dying and saying “she” (meaning Zenzi) needs Isaac. He shuts down the power grid which gives Zenzi the perfect excuse to see Eskol and his crew out.

The Hit List

Tom Griscom/The CW

Zenzi and Isaac return to Oklahoma and join Tom in finding Lino. They find him with Calvin and his crew having a grand old time. Tom pins Calvin against the wall until Lino tells Tom to listen to what Calvin has to say. Calvin says he wanted the piece to help protect his legacy. Eventually, Tom relinquishes it in exchange for Lino. After they leave, Tom is angry with Lino, who’s angry right back, especially when Tom reveals the piece he gave Calvin was a copy.

On the jet, Isaac talks to Tom about Lino and Barton, prompting Tom to go apologize to Lino. He asks why Lino quit fencing, and Lino shares how his teammates reacted to him, and he’s afraid he’s a freak and dangerous. He adds that he’s jealous of Calvin and his family because they have a connection to their past. In response, Tom tells Barclay to turn back. He goes to apologize to Calvin, giving him tech that will create the sap for Calvin to use and sell. And Swift Enterprises will fund the whole venture. Meanwhile, Isaac tells Zenzi about the woman, Melissa, who died on Isaac’s watch, and that’s why he was so protective towards Zenzi.

Back on the jet, Zenzi shows Tom the list, who thinks it could be a hit list. Isaac is telling Lino that his contact came through about Lino’s mom when Zenzi has a realization. She figures out the abbreviations are names of people who had serious medical problems the same time Eskol was in the area. The Road Back is targeting people behind tech, and Barton was just the tip of the iceberg.

Tom Swift airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on The CW, available the next day on The CW app and cwtv.com. Keep up with our coverage here.

Interview: Production Designer Mylene Santos Discusses The Music Videos That Inspired ‘Girls5Eva’ [EXCLUSIVE]

0

I’m going to pull out my soapbox for a second. If you don’t have a Peacock subscription you are missing out! The NBC/Universal app is giving us some of the funniest comedies on streaming right now. From We Are Lady Parts (about an all-female, muslim punk rock band) to Rutherford Falls to the triumphant return of the Tina Fey sitcom – Girls5Eva. About a now mostly retired girl group from the late 90s/early 00s who decide to reunite, Girls5Eva is hilarious, packed with catchy songs, and is finishing up its second season! Ok, soapbox finished.

We were lucky enough to chat with Mylene Santos, the production designer for Girls5Eva, and got to pick her brain about what it was like to build the meta world of Girls5Eva, and which bands she would love to build a music video set for in a future season of the show.

Editors note: this interview has been edited for clarity.

Nerds and Beyond: Hi! Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with me today. I was wondering if you could tell me a little bit about your research process for the show. Did you immerse yourself in a lot of late 90s/early 2000s music videos? And if so which were your favorites?

Mylene Santos: Well, you know, I lived through those eras. That was pretty easy. I had worked on the first season as the art director. So we did a lot of our research then. And which music videos are my favorites? Well the showrunner, Meredith Scardino, based the show on groups like the Spice Girls. So we started from there and looked at those specific music videos. Meredith would bring up specific inspirations and we would run with it.

There was one episode from this season, where they are on the set of a music video for Lil Stinker, and Meredith brought up the banquet table from The Great, so we jumped off of that and created a long table with all the sneakers and watches and diamonds and fruit. And also added chandeliers, and you know just designed something that was super fun and glittery and opulent.

Nerds and Beyond: I was also curious with that set, because you have to design the set from the perspective of what the audience sees if they were to watch the music video, but also all of the behind-the-scenes bits of the stage that normally stay hidden. It becomes a stage of a stage and a stage of a backstage. It gets pretty meta! What is it like building a set of a set?

Mylene Santos: When we read the script I was like, “Oh, we’re gonna have to use the stage as our set.” You know, our soundstage. And we only have two sound stages so it was pretty tricky because we had already built in that soundstage for the episode before and we had to find time to take it down and put up the new sets in. And we have really quick turnarounds between each episode. We ended up having so many sets in that soundstage! We would look in one direction, and the whole shooting crew was on the other side of the soundstage. And then when we shot in the other direction, they were constantly moving around, and it was all pretty tight in there.

So that was pretty much it. I mean, in a way it’s fun because you don’t have to worry if you see our equipment, or a ladder, or other set dressing because it just lends itself to the whole scene. So that was easy, but you know, in terms of trying to make space for the sets that we actually had to shoot inside of, that was time limited, but in the end, it all looks super great.

Nerds and Beyond: I also wanted to ask about the sound studio that the group spends a lot of their time in this season. What was it like building a set that has to have that sitcom vibe but also still feels like a workable, usable space for the characters?

Mylene Santos: So we researched a bunch. We had a few recording studios that we built last season too, but this one had to look completely different. Meredith asked for this one to be more mid-range because the girls were just starting out, so it wouldn’t be something super high-end and fancy. So I designed it so that it would look like it had history, like this was a recording studio that had little money in the beginning, and then as they made more money they would renovate this or that. You know one era gets this, and then they would renovate something else in another era. Just to give more history to the place. We were very lucky to have Jeff Richmond, our music composer with us. He helped us by making sure all of our technical equipment looked correct and would be something they would actually use.

Nerds and Beyond: I was also curious, because the show deals so heavily in parody, especially in the flashbacks and the music videos, that I was wondering how you find the balance between incorporating those larger-than-life comedy elements of the world while also keeping it grounded?

Mylene Santos: I just have to be truthful to whatever I read in the script. So when we went to the “Ricky Rats” flashback that could be more fun and exaggerated because it was scripted as regional TV and post will also come in and tweak the look of it to make it look older and of the time period. So I think when I’m truthful to what the scene is, it plays funny because of it.

I make that regional TV set look as real as possible because it should be a little hokey. When you look at those kinds of sets, they’re not high-end professional. I think that’s why it works.

For the music videos, because hip-hop videos are so high-end and flashy, I wanted to go over the top with those sets. Like a nightclub, just glittery and luxurious and over the top obnoxious. Just rolling in the dough. So I think as long as you’re truthful to what the writer is really intending, I think that’s how it works for me. In terms of designing between fantastical sets and realistic sets.

Is there a 90s or even early 2000s pop music video that you would love to pay homage to in the show that has not been done yet?

Mylene Santos: It’s funny because I didn’t really listen to pop back then, I was more of an alternative and grunge band listener. I was even in a band myself actually, but we didn’t go very far. Not as far as Girls5Eva. But as far as bands in the 90s to pay homage to… would it have to be a female band?

Nerds and Beyond: Oh no, choose any band! Let’s get wild with it!

Mylene Santos: Ok so I would probably say Radiohead. I love Radiohead and they were big in the 90s. But I don’t think they fit into our Girls5Eva world. So for a pop band… Destiny’s Child was around in the 90s right? Or were they the 00s?

Nerds and Beyond: Yeah, I think they kind of overlapped both. This will date me but I was in middle school when I got their album The Writing’s on the Wall and that was 1999. So they are definitely in the same space as The Spice Girls and Girls5Eva.

Mylene Santos: Yeah, so if we’re talking a female group I’d probably have to do them. Or like in Kimmy Schmidt when they referenced the Lemonade video, something like that.

Nerds and Beyond: Destiny’s Child is a great choice! They had that one video for “Say My Name” that had the rotating color blocked rooms, where each one of them is in like a different primary colored cube.

Mylene Santos: Yeah, it’s funny my MTV was definitely in the beginning in the 80s so I can bring up any music video from back then, but the 90s they started transitioning more to Real World and that kind of stuff.
