Many people have been anticipating this film for what feels like ages, and maybe it has been, but I can tell you firsthand that it was worth the wait that it took to get here. Cherry is written by Joe and Anthony Russo, formally known as the Russo Brothers, and adapted from Nico Walker’s novel Cherry. It follows Tom Holland in the title role, Cherry, who is a disenfranchised young man from Cleveland that meets the love of his life Emily (Ciara Bravo) at college. He risks losing her through a multitude of bad decisions and enlists himself in the Army where he goes through training to be a medic. When he returns home, he struggles with not just PTSD, but also an opiate addiction that quickly turns sour spiraling into harder drugs. In order to fund the addiction after draining all of his finances, he turns to robbing banks.

Having to portray and talk about heavy and real subjects like drug abuse and trauma on screen is something that a lot of people struggle with, and rightfully so. However, Bravo and Holland carry these roles with caution, not taking them lightly and certainly dealing with them carefully. Holland takes on several roles in this movie, from student to junkie to soldier, he plays them convincingly. In a conversation with Emily on the phone, it becomes a lot for him as he relives the struggles of having to see those around him perish. Having to then watch him return home and see his battle — internal and external — just beginning is the most heartbreaking aspect. His story is vulnerable and raw and it proves Holland’s range, that he’s capable of holding the lead in any film he is in. He captivates the audience in devastating ways in every part of his journey.
Bravo portrays Emily, an out-of-state college girl that Cherry meets in class. Seeing Bravo’s progression to her eventual snap and nose dive into the world of drugs and all that inhabits it with Cherry, will break your heart. As the female lead, she embraces it and her character, leaving it all out on the table. Emily is integral to Cherry’s story, and Bravo’s onscreen dynamic with Holland coupled with their chemistry and dialogue make for an intense piece of cinema. It’s clear that Cherry and Emily are both unsure about aspects of their lives when they first meet, and as their relationship evolves and spirals, they rely on each other just to keep going.

The Russo’s themselves have a knack for filming movies in their hometown, so to take on this film which was already set in Cleveland was a match made. No matter the scene, a lot of times it felt like a more personal experience that the viewer was taken on. Some shots are close-ups, others are in the first person, and that’s definitely something to take away from the style of Cherry. It’s set up as chronicled “chapters” of his life so in a way, you’re growing with him and feeling every emotion that he is experiencing. Also, there is a lovely cameo in the film that fans of the Russo Brothers will enjoy, albeit a short one, it was definitely a moment to appreciate.
Speaking of the Russo’s, they are also really great at finding the right balance between comedy and tragedy. While the storytelling and subjects surrounding it are serious in nature, at the end of the day it is still something meant to entertain people. They were careful not to oversaturate and this is also a testament to Holland; while many people are used to seeing him play a quirky teenage Peter Parker, he was able to tap into those roots and deliver as the lead of something drastically different.
Without spoiling too much or at all, the ending to this film is one of the most memorable parts and definitely a change of pace to the rest of the tone. If you’ve read the novel or are a fan of those involved and are questioning if you should watch it, I highly recommend giving it a try. Between the experimental visuals and cinematography, the scoring, and of course the heart-wrenching clinic that both Holland and Bravo put on, it’s hard to imagine why it wouldn’t at least be considered this award season.
Cherry lands in theaters tomorrow, February 26, and on Apple TV+ March 12.

Monster High has returned from the dead to live on once more! Nickelodeon and Mattel are teaming up to produce a live-action television movie and an animated series.
Clawdeen, Draculaura, and Frankie Stein will return to Monster High as well as a variety of other monster students. The animated series will be produced by writer Shea Fontana (Doc McStuffins). She will be joined by Claudia Spinelli from Nickelodeon and the duo Adam Bonnett and Christopher Keenan from Mattel to help bring the show back to life.
Also in production is a live-action television musical based on the toy line and television show. Jenny Jaffe (Rugrats reboot), Greg Erb (Playmobil: The Movie), and Jason Oremland (The Princess and the Frog) will all write the script for the movie.
Both the television show and the movie are expected to premiere in 2022.
The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively revealed that Jordan Peele’s The Twilight Zone will not return for a third season. The cancellation comes as part of CBS All Access’ upcoming rebranding as Paramount+.
During the recent investors presentation for Paramount+, in which ViacomCBS executives unveiled several new projects for the streaming platform, The Twilight Zone was not included as part of the new Paramount+ lineup. However, the show will still remain available on the platform.
The Twilight Zone is a modern-day reimagining of the classic Rod Serling series that aired from 1959-1964. Peele’s reimagining is also an episodic anthology, with Peele stepping into Serling’s shoes as the show’s host and narrator. It put a modern twist on iconic episodes while also bringing a variety of wholly original content.
Peele’s version of The Twilight Zone premiered in 2019 and ran for two seasons. It was developed by Peele, Simon Kinberg, and Marco Ramirez.
The Twilight Zone is available to stream on CBS All Access until March 3, where it will then transition to the new Paramount+ platform on March 4.
Monday is almost here again, which means we’re getting closer to a new episode of FOX’s 9-1-1: Lone Star! The network has released even more new stills from the upcoming episode, this time featuring the show’s hottest couple.
In the two new images, T.K. and Carlos are at Carlos’ place and hanging out on the couch. However, it seems like the two are having a tough conversation and Carlos holding his boyfriend as they’re watching TV.

Whether or not you’ve watched the titular NBC sitcom The Office, chances are you know all about Kevin Malone and his famous chili. But if you don’t, here’s the gist: in the season 5 episode “Casual Friday” Kevin snags the cold open, in which we see him struggling with a massive pot of chili that he made for the entire office. Unfortunately, disaster strikes, and the rest is history.
In honor of National Chili Day today (February 25), Nerds and Beyond had the chance to recreate and review Kevin’s chili, thanks to Peacock!
As a person who doesn’t love cooking, this chili recipe was perfect. Many of the ingredients are canned items or require little to no prep. Any prep required (like chopping the onions) takes no time at all, something I greatly appreciated.
The directions are easy to follow, and many of the ingredients are added in three main groups, which allows you to keep easier track of which ingredients you have and haven’t already added.
Once everything is in the pan and cooking, it’s only a matter of minutes until it’s ready to serve! That is, in my opinion, the best part — no need to spend hours prepping and waiting for the chili to finish. All you need to do is watch your favorite episode of The Office, and the chili will be ready before the episode ends!
Finally, you’re ready to serve your chili (with additional garnish if you wish) and dig in! And I have to say, mine turned out quite delicious. We may not be able to try Kevin’s chili made by Kevin himself, but this is a pretty satisfactory recipe nonetheless. Keep reading to find Kevin’s chili recipe!
Kevin’s Famous Chili Recipe (courtesy of Peacock)
Ingredients
1 lb. 85/15 lean ground beef
1 (12 oz.) coarsely chopped yellow onion
1 (15 oz.) can petite diced tomatoes
1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
2 (about 1 oz.) dried ancho chiles
1 cup water
2 1/2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
Toppings of your choice (shredded cheese, scallions, etc.)
Directions
Combine beef and onion in a large saucepan over medium heat.
Sauté until meat and onion are browned (the trick is to undercook the onions).
Stir in tomatoes, tomato sauce, toasted ancho chilis, and water.
Season with chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and ground black pepper to taste.
Boil on a low-heat.
Simmer for 15 minutes while covered.
Add the toppings of your choice (shredded cheese, scallions, etc.).
Enjoy!
One main liberty I took with this recipe is adding beans. I used Bush’s® Kidney Chili Beans in a Mild Sauce. (Brian Baumgartner, who portrays Kevin, took part in a commercial for Bush’s® that you can watch below!) Should you choose to add beans to your chili, any brand of your choosing will work! I also added a dash of cayenne pepper for a little kick.
Thank you to Peacock for providing the recipe! Make sure you try cooking your own batch of Kevin’s chili. And remember, whatever you do, DON’T DROP IT!
Watch Kevin and the rest of the Dunder Mifflin gang’s shenanigans in The Office, now streaming on Peacock.
MTV Entertainment Studios and ViacomCBS have announced a new series for their new streaming service Paramount+, Mayor of Kingstown, with Jeremy Renner (The Avengers, The Hurt Locker) set to star as lead.
Academy Award nominated Taylor Sheridan, known for co-creating the most watched show of 2020, Yellowstone, will pen the series; Renner and renowned director Antoine Fuqua will executive produce.
Mayor of Kingstown follows the McLusky family – power brokers in Kingstown, Michigan where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry. Tackling themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality, the series provides a stark look at their attempt to bring order and justice to a town that has neither.
Renner is ready to tackle the role, stating “I am excited to dig into the complex and rough-around-the-edges character of Mike McLusky (the Mayor of Kingstown). In a world otherwise forgotten in society, Mike serves as a flawed system of checks and balances. Taylor has brought to life a layered and poignant universe that is not only incredibly intriguing but also more relevant than ever.”
Executive producer Antoine Fuqua was immediately onboard after the pitch, “When Taylor told me about Mayor of Kingstown, I immediately wanted to be a part of it. The series offers a comprehensive look into the brutal prison system where sociopolitical issues run rampant. Prisons are a forgotten world to most of the population and yet represent a microcosm of society as a whole.”
Paramount+ will be available online at ParamountPlus.com; via the Paramount+ app for iOS and Android; and across a wide number of platforms, including smart TVs, connected-TV devices, online, mobile, gaming consoles, and leading OTT providers.
ViacomCBS’ existing subscription video-on-demand and live streaming service, CBS All Access, will be rebranded as Paramount+ on March 4, 2021 as part of the service’s expansion to feature content from ViacomCBS’ leading portfolio of broadcast, news, sports and entertainment brands. ViacomCBS will also bring Paramount+ to international markets with an initial debut in Australia, Latin America and the Nordics in 2021.
Anthony and Joe Russo have joined the growing list of celebrities to sign exclusive deals with Spotify to produce original podcasts. The duo will be producing their podcast under the umbrella of their production company AGBO, which most recently oversaw Tom Holland’s new film Cherry.
Best known for their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having directed three of the universe’s largest films, the Russo brothers are well known and respected for their work on this type of genre-based content. It is currently expected that their podcast deal, which comprises of multiple years and series, will be a place for them to create an expansive, interconnected set of series that span generations. AGBO has yet to release details about specific projects coming to Spotify, but they have promised more details will be coming in the near future.
This new podcast joins an impressive list of celebrity and entertainment podcasts coming to Spotify in the near future, including podcasts from the former President and First Lady Obama, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and DC comics. It is particularly interesting to note that this podcast was announced the same day as the DC podcast, as it seems likely the two will play to similar audiences. However, until more details emerge we will simply have to wait in suspense.
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and his mother, Virginia, author of From Cradle to Stage: Stories from the Mothers Who Rocked and Raised Rock Stars, are heading to Paramount+ with their new series! In an effort to expand on the musical content offered on the streamer, the Grohl’s are getting a six-episode non-scripted series based on the book. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee will direct all the episodes, and he will team up with his mother to co-host.
Grohl has previously directed Sonic Highways which documented the filming process of the Foo Fighters studio album of the aforementioned name and Sound City, a documentary on the famous Van Nuys recording studio.
