Kyle’s Twist and How It Sets up His Future on ‘Superman & Lois’

Tonight’s episode of Superman & Lois was filled with more twists, but this episode may rival the John Henry Irons/Steel reveal.

For some time now, Kyle has made it clear that he wants nothing but the best for his family, noting on multiple occasions that he will do whatever he has to for them to be happy. Although his execution isn’t always the best, his heart is always in the right place. He’s been fairly close with Edge since his arrival to Smallville, and he’s one of the few characters who hasn’t thought twice about defending him. Kyle is under the assumption that Edge just wants to provide jobs to the citizens of the town and get a cash flow back into it, but boy is he sorely mistaken.

Brainwashed like a number of Edge’s other recruits, this episode finally revealed his fate: he’s now part of Edge’s Kryptonian army. At the beginning of the episode, there’s a point of view shot, Leslie is opening Edge’s office door for someone — we don’t know exactly who it is, but it’s clear this point was coming due to all the foreshadowing in other episodes. By the end we find out that it was Kyle, who nearly takes out both Lois and Jonathan, unintentionally, of course, he’s under Edge’s spell.

So where does this leave him? Well, Irons warned that a war was coming and now that Kyle is part of it, Lana is going to find herself in between a rock and a hard place. Lois and Clark, too, because they’ve grown close to the entire Cushing family despite their cold welcome in the pilot episode at the hands of Kyle.

Someone is going to need to start filling Sarah in, too, and if it happens to be Jordan, it’s going to be hard for him to not tell her everything. He already feels bad lying to her, but lying to her about what’s going on with her dad? It’s hard to believe she’d forgive him so easily.

The effect that this is going to have on Kyle is also important to note, because he’s not in control of his powers. When Edge calls, he answers, and he can’t remember why, when, or how, these things are happening to him. I mean, he got taken out by Superman and all he knows is that his ribs hurt!

Only time will tell what will inevitably happen to Kyle as the story slowly builds. He’s still the stubborn character we met nine episodes ago, but maybe only slightly less now that he’s beginning to question what others have known all along. How long this lasts and if he still has total faith in Edge though remains to be explored.
