A Look Back: ‘Buffy’ Actors on ‘Supernatural’

Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered in 1997 and unfortunately ended in 2003.  The show followed slayer Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) spanning 7 seasons as she fights monsters, high school and life in general along with her friends and watcher Giles (Anthony Head).  Buffy the Vampire Slayer did continue on with further seasons as a comic book published by Dark Horse Comics.

During the current Supernatural hellatus, I have been re-watching Buffy from the beginning and couldn’t help but notice how many actors have been on both shows.  I thought this would be a good time to take a look back at some memorable Supernatural actors that have made appearances on Buffy.

Julie Benz

Julie Benz played Darla the vampire who was the sire and former girlfriend of Angel on Buffy and also played Layla Rourke, who Dean meets when Sam takes him to get healed on Supernatural season 1, episode 12 “Faith”.

Felicia Day

On Buffy, Felicia Day played a shy slayer in training named Vi, but on Supernatural she plays our beloved IT girl, honorary Women of Letters and hunter-in-training, Charlie Bradbury.

Charisma Carpenter

She played an 800-year-old witch named Maggie Stark on season 7 episode 5 of Supernatural, “Shut up, D.Phil.” Charisma Carpenter was also the spoiled-brat turned ass-kicker Cordelia Chase on Buffy.

James Marsters

Also in “Shut up, D.Phil.” on Supernatural and married to Maggie Stark was Don Stark played by Ghost of the Robot musician James Marsters – who you may also recognize more notably as the vampire Spike from Buffy.

Amber Benson

Ironically, Amber Benson played Lenore, a vegetarian vampire on Supernatural Season 2 episode 3 “Blood Lust’, but on Buffy, she helped fight vampires and monsters with her girlfriend and fellow witch Willow.

Mercedes McNab

Mercedes McNab played the annoying Sunnydale high schooler turned vampire Harmony Kendall on Buffy. In Supernatural, she played Lucy, a party gal unknowingly turned into a vampire on episode 7 of season 3 “Fresh Blood”.

Harry Groener

Anthology Professor Morrison, who appeared in three different episodes in season 7, 8 and 9 of Supernatural was played by Harry Groener, who also played the evil Mayor Richard Wilkins on Buffy.

Rob Benedict

You may recognize this member of Louden Swain since he played the vampire Jape who worked for Adam on Buffy, but on Supernatural, Rob Benedict played Prophet Chuck Shurley (aka God).

David Haydn-Jones

Before David Haydn-Jones was Arthur Ketch and off doing Ketch things on Supernatural, he was on Buffy as Hobson, a member of the Watchers Council.

Megalyn Echikunwoke

Megalyn Echikunwoke is not only Dean Winchester’s ex-girlfriend Cassie Robinson, she was also a witch named Vaughne in the episode ‘The Killer in Me’ on Buffy.

Chad Lindberg

Playing a computer whiz on both shows, Chad Lindberg, Supernatural’s Ash, was on Buffy as David Kirby in the episode “I Robot, you Jane’.

As Supernatural continues, I look forward to seeing if any other actors from Whedonverse shows make an appearance. Who was your favorite crossover actor? Let us know in the comments below!
