REVIEW: ‘Kings of Con’ Season 1, Episode 3: Pasadena

0

Last week, Kings of Con released the third episode of season one and I have to say so far this episode has probably been my favorite. Supernatural alumni Alaina Huffman joined the cast this week playing Rob’s wife and we got a peek into their divorce proceedings – which are not going smoothly to say the least. Due to Rob’s less than stellar acting career, he is basically going to be left with nothing. During the hearing, Rich comes in with the good intention of trying to help his friend out, but ends up failing miserably. His interference only further adds to the confusion.

My favorite part of the scene with Huffman, Benedict and Speight is when Rob – rather foolishly – thinks he can go up against the mountain of bailiff that is sitting in the room during the divorce hearing.

One of things that is so great about Kings of Con is not only the inclusion of the cast of Supernatural playing either themselves or other characters, but also that some of the situations we are seeing in the show are based off of real life experiences that Rob and Rich have had while on the convention circuit.
In the most recent episode, we see Rob seeming to make fun of police officers during a panel at PasCon. This scene was actually based off of a situation that really did happen at a Supernatural convention during one of his panels when a statement he made about getting into character for a role was taken out of context.

Another incident in episode 3 that the guys actually found themselves in was when they were at a hotel and Rob accidentally dialed 911 instead of Rich’s room number – which also happened to be room 911. During this scene in Kings of Con, we were treated to the appearance of yet another Supernatural alumni. Mitch Pileggi made his debut on Kings of Con as one of the officers responding to Rob’s 911 call.

While we are only on episode three, one of the big takeaways that I’ve had from Kings of Con, has definitely been the writing each episode. The scripts are well thought out and continue to be witty and exciting.

Along with old favorites from the Supernatural cast – including Speight and Benedict themselves – the show has fresh faces that are quickly becoming fan favorites, like Handler Beth.

Be sure to tune in this week for an all new episode!

Tanc Sade Launches “Gilmore Girls” Charity Auction

While many of us Gilmore Girls fans are busy watching episodes of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life on Netflix, some fans will be winning special props – including a script, menus from Luke’s Diner and more – autographed by the cast. This is thanks to actor Tanc Sade, who teamed up with eBay for the auction to raise money for the Karam Foundation – a non-profit organization with the goal of aiding the refugee youth of Syria.

Sade stole the hearts of many as he portrayed Finn – a friend of Logan (Matt Czuchry)’s and a long-time member of the “Life and Death Brigade” at Yale – and we are excited to see him appear in the new revival. In the meantime, we can’t help but get starstruck all over again at his generosity and this enticing auction.

The auction will end on 12/4 at 6PM PST on eBay

You can read more about the auction and receive further updates here. You can also learn more about the Karam Foundation by checking out their website.

Behind The Scenes at the ‘Kings of Con’ Premiere

Kings of Con premiered last week and we were invited to attend the premiere! We sent Lua to report on the event for us.

Here’s what she had to say about the event:

Most of the attendees were crew, supporting cast and family members. It was held at a studio, which was pretty low-key and most of us were in a large open area where the livestream was projected onto a wall. A few of the actors and crew made up the audience where the livestream was being broadcast from.

The folks from Giphy were there and set up an area with a stool and lighting/photo equipment to make GIFs of people. They were please about the reaction to the Kings of Con GIFs from the fandom. Billy Moran and Stephen Norton from Louden Swain wandered among the crowd and chatted for a while.

The livestream got off to a bit of a late start due to server issues on the other side of the country, but the problem was resolved in about twenty minutes. Though the after show had been rehearsed several times, Rob Benedict was clearly under a lot of stress; he couldn’t have had a ton of time to adjust to pulling this off without Richard Speight Jr., who was tweeting live from Vancouver, where he’s currently directing an episode of Supernatural.

Regardless, Rob spent a lavish amount of time with each and every single attendee when he wasn’t on the air, making sure they knew he knew they were there, they were welcome and that he and Kings of Con as a whole were grateful for their support.

Having attended 3 days of the Supernatural convention in Burbank, Tuesday’s premiere and The Station Break’s concert, I am absolutely floored by the generosity Rob Benedict has for other people. Before leaving, Rob made sure to stop by and say thank you and see you soon. In the last week, Rob has done multiple live streams. He’s retweeted at least four separate interviews. If you ask anyone if he sleeps, they give you a look like you should as a different question (I once asked Kim Rhodes if any of the Supernatural cast slept, her answer as a simple, “no.”)

Also attending were some of the crew from Comic-Con HQ. They chatted with me and like the Kings of Con production team, were more interested in the reception of Kings of Con among the fandom like how it was going, did we like it? (I did learn that their staff is fewer than 20 people and they have a keen curiosity about Kings of Con fanfiction. Where is it? They want it. Give it to them.)

Tina Densmore, Elly Lachman and Brittany Sandler being some of the more recognizable members of the team, also came out to mingle with the guests and they were so welcoming! They are seriously charming, funny people and will turn on a dime at the hint there’s a problem that needs solving. It makes sense that they work with Rob and Richl they never stopped moving and they continuously interacted with a continuous stream of people. They pay attention.

Responses to “How does it feel to be here, finally?” were largely lost to loud music and distractions. The expressions when they heard the question were invariably the same though: Tired. Proud. Ready.

Bottom line is these people truly do care, about every single person who loves their work as much as they do and they can throw a hell of a party.

Here’s a video of the premiere, which was taken by Lua:

“Kings of Con” Premiered and You Need to Watch It

0

This week, Kings of Con premiered on Comic-Con HQ. The show, which was co-created, directed and written by Supernatural alum Rob Benedict and Richard Speight, Jr., airs in 15-minute episodes.

Supernatural fans know them as God and Gabriel and the two actors are regulars on the Supernatural convention circuit. While doing the conventions, Rob and Rich decided to create this show – which is a fictionalized version of themselves at conventions.

The show originally raised funding on IndieGoGo, and then was later picked up by Comic-Con HQ, which seems like a perfect fit for them.

The first two episodes were released and they completely surpassed all expectations. For Supernatural fans, this was a great way to see some of your favorite actors together in a new project. It was something con-goers could relate to, regardless if it was fictional. Rob and Rich did say some of their real-life experiences inspired episodes, although they’re dramatized more for the story. The episodes has guest stars from Supernatural including Kim Rhodes, Matt Cohen and Osric Chau.

Every member of our staff watched it, with one of our writers, Kayla, stating, “Fans – myself included – are used to seeing a very PG/PG-13 version of the cast on Supernatural, including at the cons. This definitely pushed the envelope a bit and its great to see them in these more ‘adult situations’ and using ‘grown up’ language.”

Even if you’re not a Supernatural fan – a lot of people know about conventions or have been to one. You can relate to Rob’s character, who is newly-divorced and seemingly going through a mid-life crisis. You watch how Rich, his best friend, tries to snap him out of it and they make the best of their time at the convention. One of my favorite parts of the second episode is the how it ends – making you laugh well into the credits with one line.

The show is off to a great start. It’s funny – there are many laugh-out-loud moments. The humor is quick. It’s a show that I found myself watching the episodes a few times, picking up on things that were missed previously.

It’s a show you definitely need to watch.
