REVIEW: “Kings of Con” – Season 1, Episode 6 – “Franklin, TN”

0

This Tuesday the latest episode of Kings of Con was released and unsurprisingly Rob and Rich have delivered yet another brilliantly written and hilarious episode.

In their latest misadventure, Rob finds himself really bringing his “A-game”, all thanks to a new experimental anti-anxiety pill he receives in a medical study. Much to his surprise, he learns he was actually in the placebo group and his new found personality was not due to a new miracle drug, but rather the cocktail of other pills, Rogaine and alcohol that he accidentally took the same day as the trial. In an effort to relive his glory from the night before – which included attracting the attention of Stella (played by Mandy Musgrave) – Rob attempts to recreate the exact combination of items he took.

As Rob begins his experimentation, the newest cast member Carly (guest star Lindsey Sloane) is added to the con line up. We soon learn that she is an old co-star of Rich and as things progress during the convention, it seems Rich and Carly have a bit of a “star-crossed” history.

After finally managing to recreate the mix of items he ingested, Rob returns to the bar in an attempt to once again woo Stella. However, things don’t exactly go to plan and in a panic Rob runs to the nearest restroom and gets the pep talk of his life from the one and only Bernie Kopell. Rob pulls himself together and returns for karaoke and one more rendition of “Danny Boy”.

After leaving the bar, Rich and Carly have one last heart-to-heart leaving us wondering (and hoping) that maybe there will be a future for them. Meanwhile, Rob is now nowhere to be found. Rich claims he has pulled an “Irish Exit” and is probably safe and sound back in his hotel room, when in fact he has awoken in Rome with no idea how he got there.

Returning this week are Sebastian Roche as Serge, Carly Nykanen as Handler Beth and Matt Cohen.

Matt Cohen delivers the best line of the episode while watching Rob sing karaoke: “I don’t like it… how much I like him right now.”

I’ve said this before, will say it now, and will likely say it again next week – Kings of Con is the show to watch. Whether you’re a fan of Rich, Rob, Supernatural, or even if you have no idea who any of these people are and just want a good laugh, then Kings of Con is for you. The writing for every episode is fresh and funny, and Rob and Rich, along with all of the recurring cast members, continue to showcase their acting skills with the situations that each new episode finds them in.

So sure to check out the show on Comic-Con HQ! New episodes are released every Tuesday. Also, don’t forget to tune in Tuesday nights for Kings of Conversation. Rob and Rich host, along with special celebrity guests, fan art, games and the amazing house band Jayden Swain!

Fans Push for Jensen Ackles and Louden Swain on ‘Saturday Night Live’

3

We’ve done many stories on Supernatural, including one about how they have the most powerful fanbase in TV. One of the biggest pushes fans are trying to make this year include one of the lead actors – Jensen Ackles – and Louden Swain, a band featured at Supernatural conventions led by Supernatural actor Rob Benedict (Chuck/God), Michael Borja, Stephen Norton and Billy Moran, to be featured on Saturday Night Live.

Supernatural is currently in it’s 12th season and Jensen has been attending fan conventions around the world for years. Most recently, at Jibcon, Jensen talked about SNL saying, “it’s a big dream of mine.”

Rob Benedict was asked by a fan and Nerds and Beyond Contributor, Lua James, at a concert in August of 2016 about Jensen hosting and Louden Swain as the musical guest and Rob stated, “I think if Jensen Ackles were on Saturday Night Live and Louden Swain was the musical guest, I think I could die after that night. That would be the most perfect thing ever to occur. So, I approve of it, I want it to happen, everything you can do to make that happen, I approve of.”

Part of Saturday Night Live‘s reason for choosing guests are it’s ratings. They had guests last year that included Adam Driver, Ariana Grande, Brie Larson, Miley Cyrus and Amy Schumer. While some of the guests draw big numbers at the box office, they do have guests from other genres – such as Music and Sports. With the Supernatural fandom, this is a chance for Saturday Night Live to gain a whole new – and passionate – audience.

The Supernatural fandom and the power behind it are in a whole category of their own. For Entertainment Weekly’s fall TV cover battle, after 2.6 million (yes, million) votes were tallied, Supernatural beat out 63 other new and returning shows to win the cover. They support countless charities and campaigns to raise money, support their fellow fans and much more; they’re a fandom that never gives up and supports their cast unconditionally.

The show is the longest running show on The WB and The CW, with 12 seasons. Jensen has 2.01 million twitter followers – more than Brie Larson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Margot Robbie – who have hosted this year. That’s just twitter – Jensen also has over 5 million fans on Facebook, and 4 million followers on Instagram.

Louden Swain has integrated into the Supernatural fandom and has developed a significant following of their own. Their seventh album, “No Time Like The Present”, is due out next month. While they are not a household name, they would bring a unique sound to Saturday Night Live with wide appeal. MTV described Louden Swain’s sound as, “initially leaning heavily on punk, though their influences ranged from The Clash and The Replacements to Weezer, The Foo Fighters and The Beatles.” The band tours all over the world every year and has maintained an authentically independent sound that is close to their original roots.

Saturday Night Live originated by introducing sometimes-unknown high quality comedic talent and music to the American masses. While Jensen Ackles and Louden Swain have significant followings, it’s time for them to become household names. Not only would they bring a potentially new demographic to SNL, they would maintain the high standards of comedy and musical forte established by generations of performers.

“The Station Breaks” Releases Debut Album!

On December 9th, The Station Breaks released their debut self-titled album. The band is fronted by Jason Manns and Rob Benedict, with Billy Moran on lead guitar, Cooper Appelt on bass and drummer Rob Humphreys.

Many know Jason from his solo work and Rob and Billy from Louden Swain, but with this latest album they have joined with Appelt and Humphreys and created something truly amazing.

Anyone who has ever attended a Supernatural convention may have been lucky to hear either Rob or Jason perform, and there is much to be said on the harmonizing they have brought to this album. The album has everything from love songs like “They Ain’t You” to one of the most beautiful renditions of the ballad “Hallelujah” I have ever heard.

The album is currently available on iTunes and CD Baby.

At the time of writing the article, the album is currently sitting at number 20 on the iTunes Rock charts.

REVIEW: “Kings of Con” Episode 5 – “Burnsville, MN”

0

In this week’s episode of Kings of Con, Richard books a national commercial where he has to be shirtless. Rob and Rich enlist the help of Matt to help Richard “give the ol’ torso a tune up”. And Matt does just that. Hilarity ensues as Matt shows him how to stretch, and you see a variety of scenes of the two running, lifting weights and doing pull-ups.

Also this week, the cast learns that the convention organizers have added a contractual obligation that they have to perform a circus routine. For their circus routine, Rob and Rich have decided that they are going to juggle. There’s just one problem.. Matt has put Rich through such a workout that he is unable to move his arms the next day. Richard cannot even unzip his pants, let alone perform a juggling routine. But the guys power through and everything works out. Sort of.

Also, for this week’s episode Sebastian Roche joins the cast, alongside recurring cast members Kurt Fuller, Gil McKinney and Kim Rhodes.

What’s so great about Kings of Con is that every week I find myself thinking that the newest episode has been my favorite so far, only to have it topped by the following week’s episode. The work out scene with Matt is by far one of the funniest parts of the entire series. Each new episode continues to be fresh and funny, and there’s so many quotes you can pull from each episode that are memorable.

One of the best parts about watching Kings of Conversation (the livestream on Comic-Con HQ on Tuesday nights where Rob and Rich have special guests, games and feature fan art) is seeing what parts of the episodes are real, since many of the episodes have things that Rob and Rich have personally experience doing conventions throughout the years.

Be sure to check it out the show on Comic-Con HQ! New episodes are released every Tuesday.
