We’re now half way through season 3 of Roswell, New Mexico and the show continues to deliver surprises and drama every week! Last week gave us several big reveals (check out our recap here). Jones switched places with Max, Ramos is somehow connected to Jim Valenti’s radio and Kyle’s disappearance, oh and Jones is the one who put Maria in a coma. The CW released new images of upcoming episode 7, “Goodbye Elizabeth.” (We’re not going to dwell too hard on that title, a.k.a. we’re in denial about anyone dying!) The full synopsis reads:
“HEATHER HEMMENS DIRECTS – Liz’s (Jeanine Mason) plan does not go as expected, putting herself, Isobel (Lily Cowles) and Michael (Michael Vlamis) in danger. Meanwhile, Eduardo (guest star David DeSantos) confides in Alex (Tyler Blackburn). Also starring Nathan Dean, Michael Trevino, Heather Hemmens and Amber Midthunder.”
“Goodbye Elizabeth” is written by Kristen Haynes and Christopher Hollier. It will also be Heather Hemmens’ Roswell directorial debut! The newly released images show a recovered (or at least awake) Maria, Alex and Ramos (that can’t be good after last week!), and Liz with Max and Isobel! There are also some great behind the scenes shots of Heather Hemmens directing!

What would happen if Rapunzel’s mother drank the essence of Moondrop flower rather than the Sundrop flower? That’s the question posed in the latest book in Disney’s Twisted Tales Series, What Once Was Mine, written by Liz Braswell. This enchanting adventure story explores a new and darker twist on the well-loved tale and we sat down to talk with Liz all about it!
Nerds and Beyond: First off I want to say congratulations on another amazing addition to the Twisted Tales Series! Tangled is a personal favorite and I loved how fresh and unpredictable this book really is.
Liz Braswell: Thank you!
Nerds and Beyond: In this retelling, Rapunzel has powers of the Moondrop flower instead of the Sundrop flower. Now, the Sundrop flower was straightforward in its abilities but the Moondrop is much more complex. How much research did you have to do into moon phases and where did you get the ideas for the unique abilities of her hair?
Liz Braswell: Funny you should ask…my dad was a scientist and is an amateur astronomer, so moons and stars are always sort of in the back of my mind. The “puzzle” in the wildflowers at the ancient circle of stones is based on constellations he taught me as a kid (along with the magnitude of the objects, which were of course unnecessary in a fairy tale). I did have to double check on how long each “official” moon phase lasts and at what time it might rise in central/eastern Europe! The idea for her hair’s changing abilities just flowed naturally from the fact that they come from the moon, which changes…
Nerds and Beyond: This story of Rapunzel comes with another interspersed story of a brother telling his sister this new version while she gets chemo treatments at Sloan Kettering. Tell us a little about where that idea came from and what it meant to you to write it.
Liz Braswell: As I say in my author’s note at the end of the book, my “baby” sister had cancer. She was in her thirties so not technically a baby, but she will always be my little sister. I went to most of her chemo sessions and we tried to make it as lighthearted as possible, with movies, special guests, a rotating cast of friends, etc. She lost her hair from all the treatments…and hair is obviously such an important part of Rapunzel! Again, the whole thing flowed naturally — and made for a good reason for the twist this time.
Nerds and Beyond: We meet several new characters like Gina, an up and coming adventurer. Where did the inspiration to include her on Rapunzel’s journey come from? Why not stick to just Rapunzel and Flynn?
Liz Braswell: Because third wheels are always fun? Seriously: since I’m not telling the exact same story as the movie, it’s good to have another character for the two to relate to and play off of.
Nerds and Beyond: Opposite that, we also get to see lots of favorites from the original film. Did you know right away who you wanted to bring back for the story?
Liz Braswell: Well Maximus and Pascal, obviously! And I wanted to spend time with the king and queen…they deserved a little more of their own stories told.
Nerds and Beyond: You also take a turn into real historical lore with the Countess Bathory making an appearance. I love how you rooted some of the story in real lore. Are you a history/lore fan as well?
Liz Braswell: I mean, I majored in Egyptology…took nine years of Latin…yeah, I’m a history fan! But also a long time ago I was hardcore goth and into vampires. Obviously the Lady isn’t a real one, but the legends!
Disney Books
Nerds and Beyond: Without giving away spoilers of course, did you have a favorite moment or element when you were writing?
Liz Braswell: Actually, my favorite bit isn’t a spoiler at all: it’s when her feet touch grass for the first time. The scene sort of mirrors the one in the movie, but with more explanation of her thoughts and feelings. Feeling her joy through my words was amazing. Oh, also I really enjoyed the running joke of how she doesn’t know the right names for animals, having only grown up with stylized, illuminated books. I wonder how many readers will realize that the “deadly bear” begging her for food is actually a fox…
Nerds and Beyond: What do you hope readers will take away from What Once Was Mine?
Liz Braswell: Rapunzel is a complicated story: what is it like to be coddled like a princess–but imprisoned your whole life? Can you be materially rich and privileged, but suffer real pain? How does someone emerge from nearly 20 years confinement relatively sane and with an optimistic view of the world? What is a “real” mother? I think if the reader comes away pondering these things, I’ll have done my job.
Nerd and Beyond: What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects you would like to shout out?
Liz Braswell: A secret Twisted Tale project! Also more from my series Stuffed, which is about how monsters are real and your stuffed animals really do protect you from them at night. If you’ve ever slept with a Stuffy, you need to read these books!
The duck pond is about to get a whole lot more chaotic as Numskull launches The Suicide Squad TUBBZ collectibles.
TUBBZ cosplaying duck figurines represent characters from popular movies, TV shows, video games, and comics from Jurassic Part to Back to the Future and Lord of the Rings. The Suicide Squad collection joins these other ducks on the pond with four unique ducks. You can catch a glimpse of them in the following video, and find full descriptions below.
Harley Quinn: She is just as irrational and unpredictable even as a duck. Her hair is in plaits, she is in her signature red/black clothing, and she is clearly up to no good. She has crazy thoughts on her mind.
Bloodsport: There’s no doubt the other ducks are going to be in fear of this marksman. As usual he’s on a mission. Don’t get in his way. He is in his new hi-tech suit and he’s going to use it as only he can. He’s armed and dangerous.
Peacemaker: If anyone can restore calm and peace, it’s this guy. He wants peace at whatever cost. He’ll even fight for it. His helmet is firmly in place and the red jacket is on. He’s good to go.
TDK aka The Detachable Kid: Well, he has one hell of a superpower, removing his own limbs and turning them into weapons! He’s easy to spot, with a twisted limb ready for action and his striking green suit complete with mask.
If collectible ducks are your jam, or you’re just a fan of The Suicide Squad, be sure to grab the collection here.
With just a few weeks to go until the premiere of Mike Flanagan’s (The Haunting of Hill House) latest horror project, a brand-new poster featuring the cast of the upcoming Midnight Mass has been revealed.

The series also stars Kate Siegel, Rahul Abburi, Crystal Balint, Matt Biedel, Alex Essoe, Annarah Cymone, Annabeth Gish, Rahul Kohli, Kristin Lehman, Robert Longstreet, Igby Rigney, Samantha Sloyan, Henry Thomas, and Michael Trucco.
Check out the ominous poster below, and be not afraid …
Netflix
After a series of cryptic videos, the first teaser trailer was released back in August, giving audiences a peek into what this chilling new series has in store. Flanagan has confirmed that the full trailer will drop next week.
The name Midnight Mass may seem familiar to those that follow Flanagan’s body of work, because it previously appeared as a book in his 2016 slasher film Hush and again in his 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Gerald’s Game.
Midnight Mass is executive produced by Flanagan and Trevor Macy for Intrepid Pictures.
This seven-episode limited series will premiere exclusively on Netflix on September 24.
What would happen if Rapunzel’s mother drank the essence of the Moondrop flower instead of the Sundrop flower? That’s the premise behind What Once Was Mine, the latest edition in the bestselling A Twisted Tale series from Disney. Author Liz Braswell adds dimension and undertones of dark, enchanting magic to the tale of Rapunzel. She also asks hard questions about the nature of privilege, what it means to be a mother, and explores the importance of one’s self through Rapunzel’s hair and the interlacing story of Daniella who is undergoing chemo treatments.
Braswell delivers a magical, witchy tale just in time for fall as Rapunzel learns about the powers her hair, infused with the essence of the moon, holds. Readers are treated to a host of new characters as well as old favorites with unexpected twists. Every tale in this series feels special, but What Once Was Mine cleverly entwines the real-world folklore of Countess Bathory (if you’re a folklore fan, look her up) giving the tale an extra dark flavor I didn’t expect from a Rapunzel retelling and one I very much hope we see again in the future. This book feels darker and more mysterious with the elements of magic and the moon at the center of the story. Where the original film is all about Rapunzel’s journey to the lights, here Rapunzel’s journey is focused on discovering herself, her real heritage, and the magic within. Taught to fear her hair her entire life, it’s a beautiful moment as Rapunzel steps into her own power and grows as a character.
Of course, the story wouldn’t be complete without Flynn Rider who is just as charming in print as on screen. Braswell expertly brings him to life with not only his dashing Flynn Rider attitude but also granting fans wonderful heartfelt moments highlighting the complexity of being human. She also gives us a look into the (twisted) mind of Gothel and what she’s been up to (hint: it’s not good) while Rapunzel is in the tower and after she makes her escape. The story is excellently told and well-rounded with multiple points of view on the ever-changing adventure. What begins as a trip to see the lanterns ends where Rapunzel could never have guessed. Readers won’t be able to put this book down as Rapunzel finds herself on the run with Flynn, Gina, and Pascal, a new challenge around every corner. This retelling shakes the tale of Rapunzel down to its bare bones and rebuilds it with changes that feel natural and magical, giving us an entirely new story to lose ourselves in.
