‘9-1-1’: What to Expect and What Might Happen for Season 5

0

Season 5 of FOX’s first responder drama 9-1-1 is right around the corner! The series will kick off the new season with a citywide blackout in Los Angeles and some unwanted zoo animals running through Downtown LA. Though besides the blackout, not much is known about what the 118 will be getting themselves into. What will happen when our favorite firefighters, paramedics, and officers return? Here’s what to expect and what might happen in season 5 of 9-1-1.

The Season-Opener Disaster

9-1-1 is known for starting off the season with a big disaster. Season 2 was an earthquake, season 3 was a tsunami, and season 4 was a mudslide thanks to the Hollywood Dam breaking. The only question is, how does one top it? A sophisticated hacking that takes Los Angeles, and apparently other cities, hostage. This will evidently create chaos across LA, and the 118 will be in for the ride of their lives. Not only that, but zoo animals will run rampant across Hollywood Boulevard.

Following the hacking, LA will also experience a citywide blackout. Considering how massive the city is, it will not be easy for the 118 and the other fire departments, but it’s going to be a season-opener to not forget. Depending on how big it ends up being, the aftermath could linger throughout the season as well.

Maddie’s Postpartum Depression

FOX

In the back half of season 4, Maddie and Chimney welcomed baby girl Jee-Yun into the family, named after Chimney’s mother. However, with a new baby came some difficulties for Maddie, as she gradually tried to cope with her postpartum depression while at the same time taking care of a newborn. Maddie wasn’t happy. She was tired. She even quit being a dispatcher because it got too much for her. She finally opened up to Chimney and asked for help in the season 4 finale. In season 5, fans will definitely see Maddie deal with it even more. Hopefully, they’ll focus more on her story this season, as it’s not really shown much on television in general. It’s not known what the timeline will be when 9-1-1 returns, but from the looks of the synopsis that was released for the season 5 premiere, Maddie will be dealing with a lot when they return.

Athena’s Still-Lingering PTSD

Jack Zeman /FOX

Towards the end of season 3, Athena went through something traumatic, something even she’s been having a hard time getting through. She got attacked by a serial rapist she was investigating. She took time off work, she saw a therapist, but then she went back and Bobby thought it was too soon. Athena was doing well, though it seems like that won’t last very long. According to the season 5 premiere synopsis, Athena will “revisit her traumatic attack when the case of the realtor serial rapist goes to trial.”

There’s no telling how the trial will affect Athena moving forward. It was a very traumatizing event that she went through, and a heartbreaking one for Bobby having to hear it over the radio. Hopefully, we’ll see more of that aftermath and see Athena working through it and accepting help when she needs it.

The Next Crossover

Courtesy of Jordin Althaus/FOX.

The beginning of 2021 saw Buck, Hen and Eddie from the 118 head to Texas to help 9-1-1: Lone Star‘s 126 and other firefighters battle a massive wildfire. The episode, which was part of Lone Star‘s second season, paired Hen with Owen, Buck with T.K. and Mateo, and Eddie with Marjan, Paul and Judd. It’s been reported that for the upcoming seasons, the crossover will likely be a massive two-parter that will hopefully involve more of the 118 and the 126, as well as other characters, like Carlos, Grace, Athena, and Maddie.

The question is what would bring the LA and Austin crews back together? Perhaps the latter can take a vacation to California, and a disaster just waiting to happen arises while out there. Whatever the case, we need more of these two families working together.

Hen and Karen’s Growing Foster Family

FOX

In season 4, Hen and Karen continued their foster family with adorable little foster Nia. She quickly grew close to Mama Hen and Mama Karen, even wanting to be a doctor just like her mother. However, soon, Nia’s birth mother was ready for her again and Hen and Karen said a tearful goodbye. In the finale, they ran into them at the park and it looked like things could go well for them in season 5.

Seeing the good side of the foster system is rare. It’s not all bad and the parent giving up the child is not always a bad thing. Hopefully, Hen and Karen will continue to be part of Nia’s life, and their foster family will only grow. Maybe they’ll see an adoption out of it in the next season because God knows they deserve it.

Other Storyline Hopefuls

  • Albert Han’s new firefighter life
  • May taking over at the call center
  • UNCLE BUCK
  • More Josh because Josh deserves all the screen time
  • More platonic relationships
  • Never gonna happen but how did Chimney get named Chimney?

Catch the season 5 premiere of 9-1-1 this Monday, September 20 at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on FOX! Stay tuned to Nerds and Beyond for all things 9-1-1.

‘9-1-1’: Get Ready for Season 5 With a Season 4 Recap!

0

There are just a few days to go until the premiere of the fifth season of FOX’s hit first responder drama 9-1-1, a series that follows the high pressure experiences of firefighters, police officers, and dispatchers who are thrust into frightening, shocking, and heart-stopping situations in and around Los Angeles. Meanwhile, these heroes must also try to balance solving the problems in their own personal lives as well.

For those that didn’t have time to squeeze in a re-watch before season 5, we’ve put together a summary of important events that took place in season 4 as a refresher!

The Hollywood Reservoir Dam disaster

FOX

Would it even be a season of 9-1-1 without a major disaster or two? Season 4 came in hot with a devastating two-episode event — the Hollywood Reservoir Dam broke due to seismic activity, leading to flooding and landslides. While the 118 worked to save hikers stranded at the Hollywood sign and a group of kidnapped pregnant women, Athena fought to rescue an agoraphobic woman who could not leave her house.

The third Buckley sibling

Jack Zeman/FOX

Buck and Maddie’s parents were finally introduced in season 4 when they came to Los Angeles to visit. After a stressful dinner, Buck finally stood up to Margaret and Phillip and told them exactly why he was in therapy. It wasn’t because of his job, but rather because he grew up feeling like nothing he ever did was good enough for them. (We’re still reeling over Oliver Stark’s unbelievable performance during this scene — “Love me anyway.”) At the end of the episode and carrying over into the next one — the long-awaited “Buck Begins” chapter — we learned that the Buckleys had another child, Daniel.

Daniel Buckley was seven when Buck was born, and he died a year later from juvenile leukemia. Unbeknownst to Buck, he was a savior sibling. However, the cells didn’t graft. His difficult and strained relationship that he had with his parents growing up suddenly began to make much more sense. At the end of the episode, Buck and his parents shared an important moment as they told him that they never blamed him for Daniel’s death. He was born to save someone, and he ended up in a career where he does exactly that every single day.

Eddie reveals his amended will to Buck

Jack Zeman/FOX

In a painfully shocking moment, the final minutes of episode 13 saw Eddie shot by a sniper. Buck was momentarily helpless, left standing there stunned and covered in his best friend’s blood, until he was eventually able to spring into action to drag him into the ambulance. Afterward, while Eddie recovered in the hospital, Buck had to step in and be there for Christopher.

When it was time for Eddie to be discharged from the hospital, Buck went to pick him up. As they waited for Eddie’s medication and paperwork, he told Buck that he had been meaning to talk to him about something. When he almost died in the well (season 3), it made him wonder what would have happened to Christopher, and so he went to his attorney and changed his will. If Eddie dies, Buck is to become Christopher’s legal guardian. When Buck asked about Eddie’s parents, he learned exactly why he had been chosen over them.

BUCK: If it came to that, wouldn’t they fight for him?
EDDIE: I don’t know. Maybe. Probably. But no one will ever fight for my son as hard as you. That is what I want for him.

BUCK: Well, you said you did this last year. Why are you just telling me now?
EDDIE: Because, Evan, you came in here the other day and said you thought it would have been better if it had been you who was shot. You act like you’re expendable. But you’re wrong.

The relationship between Eddie and Buck has always been one of the best dynamics on 9-1-1, and this moment further cemented the depth of the deep bond that they share.

Hen and Karen say goodbye to Nia

FOX

After being in their care for almost a year, Hen and Karen learned that Nia’s birth mother was ready to pursue reunification with her daughter. This was a struggle for them, because Hen wanted to fight for Nia, but Karen had to remind her that what was happening was a part of their job as foster parents. During the finale, they ran into Nia and her mother at the park and finally had a chance to sit down and meet her.

Jee-Yun Buckley Han is born

FOX

In episode 9, Maddie and Chimney gave birth to their first child (while Albert was in a near-fatal car accident but thankfully survived). After much debate over what her name would be, Maddie surprised Chimney by telling him that she wanted her name to be Jee-Yun, after Chimney’s mother.

Despite the busy and demanding lives that they both lead, becoming parents proved to be an entirely new challenge altogether for Chimney and Maddie. Additionally, on top of both of them being quite sleep deprived, Maddie began to experience issues of her own — postpartum depression. Though she initially tried to ignore it, she finally broke down and told Chimney that she needed help in the finale.

The 118 meets the 126

Jordin Althaus/FOX.

In the first-ever crossover between 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star, Buck, Eddie, and Hen travelled to Texas to help combat a wildfire. The actual event took place in the Lone Star episode “Hold the Line.” Seeing all of these characters meet and interact for the first time was incredibly satisfying and enjoyable for fans, and we can now hopefully look forward to another crossover coming up in season 5. (Join us in looking back on the best moments from the crossover episode!)

Buck and Taylor, 2.0

Jack Zeman/FOX

Taylor Kelly originally had a two-episode arc in season 2 that included a brief fling with Buck. At the time, Buck was trying to move on from the scandalous ways of Buck 1.0. After fooling around together a couple of times, Buck realized that what was happening between them defeated the purpose of his goal to approach relationships differently this time around. And thus that was the end of things … until season 4.

Upon Taylor’s return this past season, she and Buck didn’t immediately fall back into bed together, but they instead worked on their friendship. However, all of that changed during the finale when Taylor kissed him. The moment was awkward at best, causing Taylor to leave shortly after. She showed back up at his apartment later, and Buck admitted that he didn’t chase after her because he’s spent a long time feeling like he isn’t good enough, and he doesn’t want to do that anymore. Taylor then told him that she does want him, and the two shared another kiss.

New beginnings with Eddie and Ana

When we met Ana Flores in season 3, she was introduced as Christopher’s teacher. There were hints of attraction between she and Eddie, but nothing ever came of it. The two ran back into one another in season 4 by chance. Eddie initially wasn’t sure if he was ready to start dating again yet after the loss of Shannon, but a talk with Bobby helped him make his decision.

The two began dating and fell into what appears to be a pleasant and easy relationship, Christopher eventually accepting her after his initial negative reaction (which involved him running to Buck). Although there isn’t any obvious trouble in paradise quite yet, Carla made an interesting comment to Eddie in episode 13 when they were discussing Ana: “Be sure you’re following your heart, not Christopher’s.”

From “Evan” to “Buck,” explained

Throughout the course of the series, audiences have known that Evan Buckley exclusively goes by the nickname “Buck.” The origin of this nickname was finally explained in the episode “Buck Begins.” When Buck was taking firefighter training and certification classes prior to joining the 118, there were three other Evans in his class, so they started calling him Buck.

Though we won’t get our hopes up on seeing this other mystery solved any time soon, season 5 owes us the backstory on Chimney’s nickname next.

Other notable events:

  • The series addresses COVID-19 within the world of 9-1-1
  • Hen starts medical school
  • May took a gap year from college and began working at the call center
  • Buck starts seeing a therapist
  • Hen’s mother moves to LA
  • Albert Han finishes his LAFD training

Don’t miss season 5 of 9-1-1 when it premieres on FOX on Monday, September 20 at 8 p.m. ET/PT! Stay tuned for our weekly episodic recaps and more.

Ben Barnes Releases First Single and Music Video for “11:11”

0

The anticipation has paid off as fans get a first taste of what Ben Barnes has in store for them with the release of “11:11,” the first single off his EP Songs For You. When Barnes announced his plans for the EP on his birthday, back in August, he gave the world a little preview for the music video. Now, fans can enjoy the full experience!

The music video for “11:11” features Barnes alongside Evan Rachel Wood. This pairing may seem a bit random to some, but if you are a fan of Westworld, this video is a happy reunion of two favorite fan characters. Barnes and Wood were co-stars on the HBO series for several seasons, and their journey to becoming friends can be seen through their fantastic Dubsmash history on Barnes’s social media.

The aesthetic of the video has a touch of old-school Hollywood glamour that perfectly fits the song’s tone. Throughout the video, we follow Barnes and Wood as their paths flow around each other. It is clear there are feelings between the two, but they can never quite get in the same place at the same time. As the song builds, you can’t help but feel the love and well wishes that Barnes put so poetically into the song lyrics. The video ends with Barnes on center stage showcasing his amazing vocals as Wood watches on.

As the song came to a close, I realized I had a smile on my face and tears in my eyes. Like many of Barnes’ fans, I have been waiting and wishing for this, and to say that he delivered is an understatement. With the release of this single, Barnes has just fanned the flames of excitement for the rest of his EP to be released. Barnes was quoted in a recent interview with People as saying, “Making this video for “11:11″ has been one of the most satisfying creative experiences of my life.”

Songs For You will be available for streaming and download on October 15. If you are interested in more details on the EP, check out our article here. ‘Ted Lasso’ Recap: Season 2, Episode 9 “Beard After Hours”

AFC Richmond suffered a devastating (and humiliating) loss to Man City on Ted Lasso last week, complete with Jamie Tartt being subjected to his awful father confronting him in the locker room. Things got heavy as we learned some devastating details about Ted, Sharon got into a bike accident, and Rebecca finally met up with her Bantr date … Sam.

This week, we hoped for some news on all of “Man City”‘s bomb drops, but instead, we went on a different journey — an after-hours journey with Coach Beard.

Apple TV+

It’s all about Beard

After the match, Beard took off on his own to collect his thoughts, refusing the ride back to the Richmond facilities with the team and opting to take the train himself. When he arrives home, he heads straight to the Crown and Anchor pub, ready to down his sorrows with a beer or two … or 12?

While there, he meets up with our three favorite Richmond superfans, Baz, Jeremy, and Paul, and the four set out to have a night they won’t forget. From an elaborate scheme to get into an exclusive club, to being chased down by a very scary gentleman and then meeting up with Tartt senior in the alleyway, Beard had an eventful night. While his actions may have seemed a little erratic and irresponsible, what was driving this mad little evening adventure?

First, the loss. Clearly, Beard is suffering from some imposter syndrome. Throughout the episode we hear commentary from the pundits in Beard’s head (including famous French soccer star Thierry Henry!) saying he’s not a good enough coach, he’s not a good enough man, and this loss is his fault. Of course, that’s not entirely true, losing is a team effort just as much as winning is. But seeing this side of the usually stoic Beard shed a new light on this under-explored character.

Secondly, Jane is still plaguing Beard’s mind. I found the trajectory of this episode, and the Beard/Jane relationship, interesting and a bit disappointing. This entire season thus far has painted Jane in a … more toxic than healthy light, so I expected Beard to finally come to his senses a bit and see that Jane may not be his best match. But it was the opposite. Despite all of Jane’s odd, controlling behaviors (still evident in this episode: over 50 missed calls and 70 texts?), Beard still thinks she walks on water.

After the tackling of hesitancy to open up and seek help from Ted, to Jamie confronting his father, and Roy pushing aside his loathing of Jamie to understand what made him who he was, I did anticipate seeing the Beard/Jane situation pan out differently. The beginning of the episode had him on track to see that Jane just isn’t what he needs, but by the end he’s reunited with her in a church club and is happy as a clam. For now.

Hopefully, in these last three episodes of the season, Beard sees his worth as a coach and as a man and decides to move on from the things not helping him accept himself as those things he clearly is. Except he can’t leave the Greyhounds, that’s not allowed.

It was great to see our three favorite Richmond fans out on the town, however, as well as Jamie Tartt’s father absolutely getting what he deserved in that alleyway.

Top Ted-isms of the Week

“Beard is like the mailman, you know? He always delivers, and he looks great in shorts.”

‘Riverdale’ Recap: Season 5, Episode 16 “Chapter Ninety-Two: Band of Brothers”

0

Josie and the Pussycats have now left Riverdale following last week’s musical reunion, and the town is now being haunted by its past. After Archie’s former general gets an honor, Archie’s past in the army is brought to light. Veronica tries to get Pearls and Posh some money after Chad tips someone off, Jughead goes on an apology tour and submits his manuscript and Cheryl and Kevin take the ministry to a whole new level.

Keep reading to find out what happened in this week’s Riverdale, “Chapter Ninety-Two: Band of Brothers.”

“Our old pal turned superstar Josie McCoy had come and gone, leaving us all to our haunted existences.”

Archie’s Uphill Battle

The CW

Archie is still being haunted by the death of his platoon members and it doesn’t make it better that General Taylor is retiring with full honors and a 21-gun salute. Eric tells Archie to let it go and move on.

“Like Hell.”

He opens up to Uncle Frank about what happened out on that field, they were ordered into a fire zone to deliver medical supplies to civilians. That mission was a coverup as General Taylor was determined to take down a warlord controlling that region. His platoon got caught in some trenches, they needed air support. Someone had to go higher up so Archie went. He thought he was protecting them, but when he got back, everyone was dead. Bingo was still alive but he died before the helicopter arrived, and Eric lost his leg. Now, General Taylor is walking away with honors. Archie tells Uncle Frank it’s a war worth fighting. He’s going to take Taylor down.

Archie meets with General Taylor to confront him, asking him to stand down and retire quietly. “Soldier to soldier?” Taylor tells Archie he’s just a kid from some “podunk town” who joined the military on a whim. Archie doesn’t understand the Army or how it works and he certainly doesn’t know what it means to be a real soldier. General Taylor tells Archie not to cross him, or he’ll regret it. If General Taylor doesn’t stand down, Archie threatens he’ll demand a military tribunal. Taylor, though, says he’ll highlight how Sergeant Andrews went rogue and led his platoon into an ambush.

“It’s my word against yours.”

Archie won’t bury the truth any longer, regardless of the consequence. He later wants to take General Taylor down and go to trial but Eric’s not so sure of that. It would reopen a lot of wounds. Archie won’t go after the General unless he has the support and approval of the platoon’s families. Eric gives in.

After standing up with the military tribunal, Archie receives news Eric is not guilty of any wrongdoing and remains in good standing with the US Army. As for General Taylor, his actions were determined to be reckless and of poor judgement. He was driven by his own self interests and he’s being discharged without honors. It’s over.

Pearls and Posh and Palladium

The CW

Veronica, too, is haunted by Chad. But at the rate that Pearls and Posh is going, she’ll have all their investors’ accounts restored in a month. She and Reggie seem to be doing pretty well with Pearls and Posh, that is until they get a call from an agent with the SEC, wanting to review the store’s finances and books to ensure that Pearls and Posh isn’t engaged in any financial malfeasance. Veronica figures it had to have been Chad who tipped them off. Chad wants Veronica to ask for his help so he can balance their books before the SEC reviews them. Veronica brings up that if they got their hands on Hiram’s stash of palladium, they can sell it and finish repaying what Chad stole.

Thanks to Hermosa, Veronica and Reggie find out where Hiram is stashing the palladium. Veronica suggests making the palladium into Spanish doubloons so it’s new and unrecognizable. Then she’ll host an auction with Cheryl’s help.

Veronica successfully sells the doubloons for $300,000 at the auction, much to her father’s dismay as he tried to buy them as well. After the auction, Hiram tells Veronica it was almost as if she wanted to sell for less just so he wouldn’t get the palladium. But it would be so petty and ridiculous of her, and it’s exactly what she did. Veronica tells Hiram to not crash her auction next time.

Veronica gets a video call from Chad who got wind of her auction. He’s double checking with Veronica to see if she’s sure she doesn’t want in on his “amazing deal,” as Hiram is also working with him. She tells him she killed it at her auction. So much so all of his swindled investors are paid in full. Just in time for the SEC. Chad tells Veronica they’re celebrating at Hiram’s HQ and that she should swing by. Veronica takes him up on that offer.

During the party, Chad is told that there’s something wrong with the CopterCab stock, it’s crashing. The helicopter crash soon comes to light, as an article was published about it. A partner tells Chad he can’t be part of CopterCab if he crashed a helicopter. Veronica tells Chad he’s scum and in the end he couldn’t pull it off. He can’t land anything.

“You’ll never be an alpha, Chad. You’re a born beta.”

Veronica threatens her father about SoDale and then leaves. She has always been ruthless when it came to business, so never mess with the She Wolf of Wall Street.

Jughead’s Apology Tour

The CW

Jughead is now seven days sober and he’s finally ready to head out on an apology tour. At Riverdale High, Weatherbee tells Jughead he’s missed weeks of work and he didn’t arrange for a substitute. Jughead says he was going through some really intense personal stuff. He’s just trying to get his life back together. When he does, Weatherbee says maybe they can have him teach again, but right now Jughead’s on administrative leave.

He gets a call from his agent, Sam, about his manuscript. The publisher is demanding it ASAP. No manuscript, no career. Jughead promises Sam he’ll have pages by the end of the day. He meets with Tabitha at Pop’s, and the two of them apologize for what happened when Jughead went on his trip. Jughead brings up that night, as he recalls writing something that resembled a novel. Tabitha tells him he did write his book that night, Betty gave it to Jessica for her to heal. Jughead, desperate, does the unthinkable. He thinks back to when a fan, who was pursuing writing, gave him her manuscript to give to his agent. Jughead finds the novel in the bunker in a chest, The Rules of Distraction. He grabs a bottle of whiskey.

Jughead reads the manuscript and realizing how good it is, gives Sam a call and tells him he’s finished the novel. He rips the cover off the novel, so no one knows who really wrote it.

While talking with Betty, Sam calls him and tells him the book’s incredible. Jughead caves and tells Sam that he didn’t write it. A grad student named Cora did. Sam drops Jughead as a client. I was afraid that Jughead was going to steal Cora’s work, but the fact that he didn’t and risked his career shows that he’s doing better than expected. Hopefully he’ll be able to pass eight days sober and more.

Cheryl and Kevin’s Miracle

The CW

Cheryl and Kevin are still doing the ministry but before they have a chance to sing, Penelope interrupts them, saying Jason commands it. No more singing. Jason was a young man with few words. (Seriously, have we even heard him talk, both before and after life?) Kevin tells Cheryl that she needs to prove that there is no higher authority than her within the ministry. It’s all about showmanship. If Cheryl performs three miracles, she qualifies for sainthood. Kevin may have a trick or two up his sleeve.

“Oh, I hope you have at least three, Brother Kevin. I need my halo and my wings.”

  • The first miracle that Cheryl performs is turning water to maple syrup, like how Jesus turned water into wine. Jason granted her the ability.
  • It’s time to witness another miracle. Cheryl manifests the collective pain of their congregation, and her hands bleed with the blood of the stigmata. Mimicking the holy wounds of Jason.
  • The third miracle involves Cheryl taming bees, yes bees, though Penelope doesn’t believe it so much.

“For I am Cheryl Blossom, Queen of the Bees.”

Kevin asks how she tamed those bees and Cheryl admits that something inside her has shifted. Something powerful, something she can’t explain. But she’s feeling more connected to things than she has in years. What if she is the first-ever living saint? Is Cheryl Marjorie Blossom the holiest of holies? Wouldn’t that be miraculous?

Wait, What?

The CW

This week’s Riverdale was definitely something, so sit back, try to relax and read on to see what some of the weirdest moments were in the episode.

  • Reggie and Hermosa were a thing, or I guess are a thing? Not something I expected.
  • Cheryl and Kevin’s “miracles” are a little questionable, bloody hands and bees? What kind of tricks did Kevin learn from David Copperfield?
  • Is Cheryl Blossom a saint?
  • Betty admits she is more comfortable studying serial killers than she is socializing with normal people.
  • Betty and Tabitha work the Lonely Highway together to try to catch the Trucker Killer.
