‘Tis The Fandom Gift Guide Season: ‘Squid Game’ Edition

0

If you have been following along this month, the Nerds and Beyond staff have been sharing gift guides inspired by our favorite fandoms to help ease the stress of holiday shopping. Both personal and fun, fandom-related gifts cater to any of the special people in your life.

Now, as November comes to an end and the holiday countdown begins, we thought the best way to close out the collection of gift guides is with the highly popular and talked about Netflix show, Squid Game. The Korean drama follows a group of adults facing high-stakes financial problems. When they accept an invitation to participate in a series of children’s games for a tempting cash prize, they quickly learn that playing comes at a deadly price. After being on Netflix for two months, the series has gained a massive fan following and landed a second season.

Just like the show, these Squid Game-inspired gifts will be a smash hit. Without further ado, let the games begin!

One of the most iconic moments from the show, your Squid Game fan can now represent the game with these stylish and minimalist sweatshirts from ZuzuuTees. Cozy and adorable, each sweatshirt features the four iconic honeycomb shapes and comes in six different colors and unisex sizes S through 2XL.

‘Dexter: New Blood’ Recap: Episode 4 “H Is for Hero”

0

This week marks the 100th episode of Dexter! In tonight’s episode of Dexter: New Blood, Angela gains an ally in her search for the missing girls. Meanwhile, serious trouble goes down at Harrison’s school. And it’s a doozy. Read on to find out what happens in “H Is for Hero.”

Warning: No heroics here. Spoilers galore.

Help Me Help You

dexter new blood episode 4
Seacia Pavao/SHOWTIME

Like the good podcaster she is, Molly continues to try and gain more info from Angela. However, her motives go beyond Matt’s case. Eventually, Molly meets with Angela, with alcohol. She wants to befriend Angela. And help her. Molly’s found one of Angela’s missing girls, as well as discovered two more who are missing. We also get answers about Iris. She was Angela’s best friend in high school. One day, she went missing. No one looked for her. That’s what prompted Angela to dedicate part of her career to finding those missing girls. So, Molly proposes an alliance. This time, Angela is much more willing.

Demolished Bridge Over Troubled Water

dexter new blood episode 4
Seacia Pavao/SHOWTIME

The beginning of the episode sees Deb walk through how Kurt could tie Matt back to Jim. That old rhythm between them is back, even if it’s just his own brain. Meanwhile, Harrison seems to be adjusting to Iron Lake and finding his own rhythm with Jim. The two go about their day. It’s not all smiles, though. At school, Harrison decides to listen to Molly’s podcast. His episode of choice? The one about Trinity.

Cue Jim receiving an emergency alert from the school. When he arrives, paramedics wheel out Ethan, a deep gash on his leg. (I wonder who else used to slash his victims’ legs.) Angela asks Harrison what happened. According to him, Ethan was planning to kill his classmates, and he wanted Harrison’s help. Harrison tried to bring Ethan to talk to someone instead. Ethan didn’t like that. So, he pulled a knife and stabbed Harrison. Eventually, Harrison grappled the knife away from Ethan and managed to cut his leg. As he explains, Logan searches through Ethan’s bag and finds Ethan’s sketchbook. You know, the sketchbook full of disturbing drawings. Oh, and a kill list!

That night, Harrison is still distressed (naturally). Dexter can relate, flashing back to the day he was “born” in the shipping container. However, he only confirms he understands. He can’t offer much in the way of comfort. Deb continues to add salt to the wound. She tells Dexter that Harrison is completely unlike him. Because of this, Dexter will never be able to connect to his son.

Fact or Fiction?

The following morning, Jim tends to Harrison and questions him about the incident. Something’s not adding up. (There’s that lizard brain hard at work.) Deb thinks Dexter is out of his mind. Harrison is traumatized. His reaction makes sense for normal people. Soon, Jim heads to the station to re-examine the photos from the scene. He finds Angela (and Audrey, who learns she was on Ethan’s list), letting her know there’s new info. Jim still isn’t convinced Harrison was telling the truth. Unfortunately, he’s right.

dexter new blood episode 4
Dana Starbard/SHOWTIME

So, Jim heads back to the school. Deb berates him. Dexter doesn’t hear it; he’s back in blood spatter analyst mode. (Ah, we missed that.) As he assesses and recreates the scene, he begins to piece everything together. He starts with Harrison’s recounting, but the blood doesn’t match. And if Dexter Morgan taught us anything, it’s that blood never lies. Deb continues her scolding; she believes he’s deliberately trying to find darkness where there is none. Still, Dexter continues. Next, he examines the scene as if Harrison attacked Ethan from behind and then stabbed himself. (Dexter also confirms that the spot Harrison attacked Ethan almost matches Trinity’s kill spot for his bath victims.) This time, the blood spatter matches. Dexter was right. Deb wonders why Harrison would do this, to which Dexter responds, “He wanted to know what it felt like.”

The next day, Jim again tries to question a defensive Harrison. Before he can get much information, Kurt arrives. He brings a gift for Harrison, and shortly after, Harrison heads out. Kurt stays back to talk to Jim. He tells Jim about how Harrison is a good kid, unlike Matt. Kurt admits his guilt about raising someone like Matt. Jim attempts to console him, mentioning the boat accident (mistake). He catches himself, but it’s too late. Kurt is suspicious of Jim and they both know it.

When Kurt leaves, Angela calls and Jim heads to the station. Angela tells him that Ethan revealed what happened. Of course, it matches what Jim pieced together. Despite hearing the truth, Angela attributes it to Ethan being troubled. She says they’re moving forward with their case against Ethan. She offers to put Jim in touch with a lawyer, but he declines. Does Angela really believe Harrison’s version, or does she just not want to believe Ethan’s?

Appearances Can be Misleading

Thanks to Kurt citing that Matt is alive, Jim is wary of him. He follows Kurt to one of his truck stops. Jim watches from a distance as Kurt talks with a girl near the entrance. Later, we learn the girl’s name is Chloe. Though she and Kurt don’t seem to know each other too personally, they get along well. She needs money for bus fare. (Hmm. This story is sounding familiar.) It turns out Kurt previously gave her fare, but she needed other provisions. He declines to give her more money. But Kurt, being the real stand-up guy he is, offers her a job… and a place to stay. Where does he bring her? To the same place where Lily was held captive and later killed. Kurt is our mystery creep.

Like Father…

The final sequence of the episode goes back and forth between the school, Dexter, and the above revelation about Kurt. (And I just have to applaud the incredible editing during this.) First, Logan talks to the group of kids who were on Ethan’s kill list, plus Harrison. He offers support and urges them to be understanding with each other. Harrison begins to look increasingly guilty. During this, Jim frantically searches Harrison’s room. He’s looking for the knife Harrison used.

Back at the school, Logan asks if anyone wants to say anything. Zach applauds Harrison and riles up everyone to get Harrison to give a speech. Harrison mentions it was awful what happened. Then, he calls out everyone else for being awful to Ethan. And still, Jim searches. Finally, he finds what he’s looking for.

But it’s not a knife he finds. It’s a straight razor. Like the one Trinity used. Deb stands by the door in shock. Dexter flashes back to the night he found Rita, with Deb reminding that, like Dexter, Harrison was born in blood. Deb’s heart shatters. Dexter, though… Dexter seems almost elated, proud.

“He has my Dark Passenger.”

He cradles the razor, holding it to his face. And maybe he was trying to mask it, or maybe not – but just before we cut to credits, a smile crosses his face.

Other Noteworthy Moments

  • This week, Angela learns about Matt allegedly being alive. Kurt claims Matt is in the city, answering all of Angela’s questions. He responds as if Matt is undoubtedly among the living. But Matt is dead. Right? We didn’t all have a shared hallucination? So, Kurt. What’s the deal, pal? As the old adage goes, “It takes one to know one.” Now that we know Kurt is a proverbial “one,” how much does he suspect Jim?
  • After the chaos at the high school, Harrison goes to visit Ethan in the hospital. He talks with Ethan’s parents. Ethan’s mother is (understandably) upset that Harrison didn’t tell them. Ethan’s father, while upset, is grateful that, because of Harrison, it wasn’t worse. Still, they’re pariahs now. They’re leaving town and never want to see Harrison again.

Whew, what an episode. Stay tuned for our upcoming article taking a deeper dive into what the heck just happened.

Dexter: New Blood airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on Showtime. Keep up with our weekly recaps here, and the rest of our coverage here.

‘The Shrink Next Door’ Recap: Episode 5 “The Family Tree”

0

Last week, Marty and Ike set up the Yaron Foundation, which is sort of turning out to be the Ike Foundation. Ike has been stealing money to fund his longed-for lavish lifestyle and Marty is still clueless about the theft. Marty also suffered a heart attack due to Ike’s frivolous spending at an auction, proving this relationship is detrimental both physically and mentally. Will he see it yet? Or will Ike continue winning his battle to gain all that Marty has?

The Hampton House

Apple TV+

The series has fast-forwarded to 1990, eight years after Marty and Ike’s first session, and from the looks of Ike’s girls, it’s been about 6-7 years since we last saw the pair. Ike’s father has just passed, and while he gives quite the tear-jerking eulogy, he details his lacking relationship with his father later in the episode to Marty and his mother in the closing scenes.

In an attempt to console his grieving friend, Marty invites Ike, Bonnie, and the girls to the Hampton house for Memorial Day, and they gladly accept. Ike’s interest in the Hampton house has been evident since episode 2, and thanks to the opening scenes of the series we know there’s a lot more to come regarding this property …

During their stay, Ike plants the seeds of renovations in Marty’s mind, saying he’d be honoring his late parents by updating the property to enjoy it rather than preserve its dated state as if it were a museum. Ike also takes a noted interest in the surrounding neighbors, mostly their prominent statuses and wealth.

This Hampton house is going to be a very important detail, likely being the crown jewel of Ike’s manipulation.

The Ever-Persuasive Ike

Apple TV+

Ike wants that Hampton house, or a Hampton house, and when the property next door to Marty goes for sale, Ike tries to persuade Marty to buy it. First, he tries to convince Marty to sell his current home and purchase the neighboring one, but Marty refuses. As he should, that was his parents’ house. Then, Ike tries his hand at telling Marty to buy it and combine the properties for one massive estate. Ike mentions cutting down the cherry tree in the backyard to create more room for a miniature golf course, but Marty details how much his mother loved that tree and he could never, ever cut it down.

Marty does however agree to renovate, likely in an attempt to appease his friend who he’s consistently disappointing regarding the house.

When Ike threatens to leave to take a sabbatical in Jerusalem to continue working on his novel, Marty offers up an extended stay at the house instead. He’s desperate not to lose his only friend. Ike accepts and sends Bonnie and the girls home so he and Marty can “work.” The work? Marty is Ike’s transcriptionist and personal remodeler. In fact, as the remodel continues, it’s photos of Ike that are hung on the wall in place of Marty’s old family photos.

Gaslight, Greenlight

Apple TV+

If there’s one thing we’ve learned thus far it’s that Ike is a master at gaslighting, and Marty is especially susceptible to it. While we’ve seen Bonnie maneuver around Ike’s special gift, it gets Marty each and every time. This time, Ike utilizes his intellectual upper hand on Marty to convince him he loves his mother’s cherry tree because of her ineffective way of raising him. That somehow all of Marty’s issues lie in how much his mother loved him, love Ike didn’t seem to receive from his parents. He threatens to leave Marty, and quit being a therapist altogether because clearly, he can’t do the job.

Of course, Marty gives in immediately, again petrified to lose the only person he’s close to. He’s lost his parents, his sister, Phyllis, and his last attempt at a romantic relationship went sour (the latter two thanks to Ike). In a desperate attempt to save the one person who Marty has, Marty himself chops down his mother’s beloved cherry tree.

The episode flashes to one year later, Ike at his father’s grave with his mother again detailing the lack of love and warmth in his upbringing. Ike returns to the Hampton house and Marty has news, he’s bought the house next door. Looks like Ike is truly getting everything he wanted. In a rare display of emotion for Ike, he’s practically inconsolable as he tears down the fence separating the two properties as Marty looks on. Perhaps now, one year later, he’s finally processing just how much his father’s indifference toward him has affected him.

Episodes 1-5 of The Shrink Next Door are available exclusively on Apple TV+. Episode 6 will release Friday, December 3. Be sure to keep up with our continuing coverage of the series!

Fandom Gift Guides: ‘Criminal Minds’ Edition

The holidays are just around the corner, which means it’s time to start hunting for gifts. Here at Nerds & Beyond, we know that while shopping for gifts might be fun, it can also be stressful. So Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, through November, we’ll be sharing gift ideas inspired by our favorite fandoms.

Today we’re wheels up with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, but instead of hunting a serial killer, we’re searching for the best gifts for the Criminal Minds fan on your list.

Sweatshirt

WanderFreeDesigns on Etsy

There are few things as cozy as cuddling up in a sweatshirt and watching your favorite show. So why not get your Criminal Minds fan a Criminal Minds sweatshirt to wear while they watch? You can grab an official B.A.U. hoodie from CBS, or if they’re more of a visual person, you can find a crewneck featuring the whole team here. You can even get specialty embroidered sweatshirts from the show, like this one with one of Spencer Reid’s best moments or this “wheels up” one.

Phone Case

CaseCultureStudio on Etsy

Everyone has a phone these days, and with how often we use them, they are the perfect place to celebrate fandom. For Criminal Minds fans, you can go the official CBS route and grab a phone case to match the official B.A.U. sweatshirt from earlier, or you can head to Etsy for cases featuring your choice of B.A.U. team members. Or, if they’re like me and Spencer Reid is their favorite team member, you can grab them one of these fantastic Reid-centric phone cases.

Stickers

HannahAndDearJoe on Etsy

While stickers might seem like a gift best aimed at kids, the advent of vinyl stickers has made them great gifts for adults too. Many people use these styles of stickers to decorate their water bottles, computers, notebooks, and even their cars. So grabbing a set of Criminal Minds stickers like this might be the way to go.

Cup/Mug

Shiquinkira on Etsy

If you ask me, you can never own enough mugs or cups/tumblers, and the Criminal Minds fandom has definitely adopted this as their motto as well. You can grab mugs with everything from a favorite Spencer Reid quote, to one of Morgan and Garcia’s classic phone conversations, to this one that features the whole team and their roles. Or, if a cup/tumbler is more their style, you can pick up a stainless steel tumbler from Shiquinkira‘s Etsy shop in a variety of styles or, if you’d prefer, a personalized Starbucks cup featuring their favorite character from TalkCraftyToMeShop.

Makeup/Toiletry Bag

WCGXKO on Amazon

Perhaps not the most obvious fandom gift, there is a whole slew of Criminal Minds-themed makeup/toiletry bags available to help travel be a bit more fun for your fan. From bags with notable quotes from Spencer Reid and Aaron Hotchner to ones featuring the whole team or even this one that looks like an evidence bag, there is an option for every Criminal Minds fan.

T-Shirt

Pinehart on Etsy

If, for some reason, the sweatshirts from earlier aren’t exactly your fan’s speed, don’t worry. There are plenty of t-shirts out there for you to choose from instead. Of course, you can go the official CBS route with this Criminal Minds logo mashup shirt, or you can head over to Etsy to find this more minimalist shirts like this “mentally dating Spencer Reid” shirt or this one that comes in a variety of colors and lists the entire team by their last names.

Poster

PrideandPosters on Etsy

The last item on this list is a classic fandom gift, posters. It seems like growing up, most everyone had a poster of their favorite movie or band, and some people carried that habit into adulthood. So if your Criminal Minds fan is one of those people, check out this Criminal Minds icon poster, this cast poster, or even this unique digital art piece that you can print as a poster.

Hopefully, this guide has helped you find the perfect gift for the Criminal Minds fan in your life, but be sure to check out all of our other fandom gift guides for more inspiration this holiday season.

‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ Recap: Season 1, Episode 5 “That Comment Tho”

On this episode of The Sex Lives of College Girls, Kim finds herself hyperfocused on an Instagram comment, and Bela is determined to get a solid in with Catullan. Meanwhile, the group decides to attend a party at Nico’s frat house. Read on to find out what happens in “That Comment Tho.”

No, Really. That Comment Though.

Kim shows Bela and Whitney the comment Nico left on her photo. They’re excited until Kim realizes Nico deleted it. Bela spins it into a good thing, and Kim vows not to overthink it. But, naturally, she does. She consults Canaan, who tries not to indulge her. However, Lila does and offers advice. Later, Kim then discusses it with Bela and Jocelyn. They can’t tell if Nico really likes her. So, Jocelyn suggests she talk to him at the frat party later. Kim needs to see how he flirts in person.

Locker Room Fiasco

sex lives of college girls episode 5
HBO Max

While Bela, Whitney, and Willow study in the library, one of the players from the men’s soccer team approaches them. Whitney clocks his very nice tracksuit, wondering why the women’s team didn’t get any. Willow tells her the men always have it better.

To prove this disparity, Whitney streams live on social media from the men’s locker room, which is WAY nicer than the women’s. Unfortunately, Whitney accidentally records some of the men… who happen to be stark naked. Coach Woods reprimands her. She benches Whitney for two games. Senator Chase disapproves. She video chats with Coach Woods, Whitney, and Dalton, upset that her daughter was punished. She changes her tune when Coach Woods tells her why.

Party People

At the women’s center, the group invites Leighton to a drag show. She declines and tells them about the party. The group in turn disapproves because they’ve been trying to get Greek life shut down. Leighton tries to tell them why frats aren’t that bad, and somehow manages to invite the group instead. She goes to tell Nico, who’s not thrilled. So, she goes back and tells the group they should go to the drag show. But it’s too late; they made a deal.

Meanwhile, Bela crashes a Catullan soiree. Her mingling isn’t going so great until she spots Ryan. He compliments her latest piece and offers to give her notes. She accepts, and everything is peachy. Well, until Ryan shows her a “funny” video that’s actually porn.

During the party, Leighton meets up with Whitney and Kim, who’s still thinking about the comment. Bela arrives and tells them the soiree was fine… up until Ryan showed her the video. She brushes it off, but they think it’s pretty creepy.

A bit later, everyone’s vibing and having a good time. Whitney collides with the soccer guy from earlier. He gets snippy and claims men are better at sports and he’s probably faster than her. She challenges him to a run on the treadmills set-up in the room. The first one to hit one-mile wins. And our girl wins. Obviously.

Leighton and Alicia chat outside. A guy decides to pee right near them, which annoys Alicia. The guy calls her a homophobic slur, so she pushes him over and leaves. Leighton rushes after her. Alicia says it’s not the same; she’s queer but it’s easier for Leighton, who Alicia thinks is straight. Leighton tells her she’s wrong, then kisses her.

Nico walks Kim back home. They chill on a bench and Kimberly rips the band-aid off. She asks about the comment. Nico admits he did delete it. He doesn’t want anyone getting the wrong idea. Meanwhile, things are going well for Leighton, too. She gets dressed after she and Alicia have sex. She plans to leave, but Alicia convinces her stay.

Whitney and Dalton talk, enjoying each other’s company. But then Dalton breaks up with her. And, yeah, it’s partially because of the meeting with Senator Chase. Whitney wants to know what happens now; Dalton can’t just go home to his wife. He confesses he never told her. And Whitney shouldn’t tell anyone either.

The first five episodes of The Sex Lives of College Girls are streaming now on HBO Max. Episodes 6-8 release next Thursday, December 2. Keep up with our recaps and other coverage here.

‘The Great British Baking Show’ Recap: Season 12, Episode 10 “The Final”

0

It’s the final of The Great British Baking Show! The last 10 weeks have just flown by and we are down to the last three bakers! Each of them has won the “star baker” title twice and the ultimate honor of two handshakes from judge Paul Hollywood. The challenges they faced were tricky but allowed them to show off their considerable talent.

Signature Challenge

For the signature challenge, the bakers were asked to make a decorated carrot cake. They could use whatever complementary flavors, fillings, and decorations they wanted. They had two hours and 15 minutes to make their cake. This was not a lot of time considering the bakers needed to be able to cool their cakes to decorate them. The bakers were all evenly matched in this challenge, receiving a mixture of positive and negative feedback.

Crystelle decided to be ambitious and made a four-tiered spiced carrot cake. Her cakes were sandwiched with orange curd and decorated with pistachio and mascarpone frosting and pistachio praline. Her four-tiered cake didn’t go down too well with the judges though. Due to it being so tall, the sponges had retained some heat and so her curd and frosting had melted slightly. This meant that her sponges had moved and were slightly wonky. Crystelle even had to use dowels to keep her cake upright. However, they loved her flavors and thought they were very well-balanced.

Chigs, who only started baking 18 months ago, was making his second ever carrot cake. His sponges were sandwiched with star anise infused pineapple jam and topped with classic cream cheese icing. The judges loved his decoration and his pipework and also enjoyed the flavor of his pineapple jam. However, they thought his cake was rubbery and stodgy due to the large number of carrots he had used.

Giuseppe made an orange-zest infused carrot cake sponge, sandwiched with fig and walnut jam. This was then decorated with orange cream cheese icing, candied walnuts and fresh figs. Whereas Crystelle and Chigs had made the challenge easier for themselves by baking individual sponges for their layers, Giuseppe made one large cake that he then sliced up. This meant that his cake took a lot longer to bake and didn’t have much time to cool. As a result, his icing had melted slightly and his cakes had shifted a little. The heat also meant that the jam and cream cheese had soaked into the hot sponges, making the judges question at first whether the cake was underbaked or stodgy. Despite this, his cake was pretty but more importantly it was delicious. The judges particularly loved the fig flavor.

Technical Challenge

For the technical challenge, they were asked to bake 12 Belgian buns filled with sultanas and lemon curd. The judges expected a coiled, slightly chewy bun with a hint of sweetness from the lemon curd. They had two and a half hours to follow the pared back recipe and the bakes were then ranked from worst to best in a blind judging. However, the bakers didn’t quite realise how pared back the recipe would be this week. It contained only two instructions!

Crystelle seemed to be at a slight advantage because she had made a curd in the signature challenge and she knew what Belgian buns were. At first, it seemed like Chigs was going to come in last place due to rolling his dough the wrong way. The way he rolled his buns meant that they were very tall and did not have enough spirals. However, the turning point in this challenge came down to how long to leave the buns in the oven for. Crystelle and Chigs pulled their buns out of the oven quite early to leave themselves with enough time to cool and decorate them. However, Giuseppe decided to leave his in the oven for longer.

Giuseppe’s buns were neatly iced and perfectly shaped. The judges commented that they were exceptional and would have come in first place if he hadn’t left them in the oven for so long. His buns were very dark in color and were very dry and overbaked. This left him in last place.

Chigs came in second due to rolling his buns wrong. They were also a little bit too chewy and solid. This left Crystelle in first place, winning her first ever technical challenge! Her buns were a nice uniform color, had good lemon curd, and tasted nice, even if her icing was a little erratic as she rushed at the end.

Showstopper Challenge

For the showstopper challenge, the bakers had four and a half hours to make a Mad Hatter’s tea party display. The judges wanted a display of sweet and savoury afternoon tea treats, showcasing at least four different baking disciplines. They wanted the bakers to capture some of the craziness of Alice in Wonderland whilst producing perfect bakes.

Chigs’ centrepiece was a blue Cheshire Cat cake, flavored with orange curd. This was accompanied by jammy dodger biscuits shaped like playing cards with strawberry, elderflower, and black pepper jam. He also baked chicken and mushroom pocket watch pies and brioche toadstools, filled with lemon and lime crème patissiere. The judges were impressed with the overall look of the display, particularly the cat cake and the playing card biscuits, which were beautiful. However, they were a little disappointed with the lack of smile on the Cheshire Cat because he ran out of time. They thought his pies and brioche were delicious. The playing cards were particularly good with an excellent buttery biscuit but Paul was disappointed that he couldn’t taste the elderflower or black pepper. The cake was delicious and the flavors were very well-balanced.

Giuseppe made a chocolate and hazelnut tear and share brioche mushroom as his centrepiece. This were accompanied by mango and passionfruit drink-me panna cottas, orange and fig heart-shaped muffins, and asparagus and pea-filled choux buns used to make a caterpillar. Giuseppe was really pushing it with the time restraints as he had a lot of baking to do. It almost ended in disaster when he went to put something in the oven and realised that his oven was cold. He had left the door slightly open during pre-heating and so it had turned off. This lost him a lot of valuable time but he managed to pull it together.

The judges thought that Giuseppe’s display was simple but effective. The choux buns were delicious but a little too soft because of the creamy filling. They loved his brioche, though, as it was very complicated with multiple layers but was crisp and delicious. The muffins were cute, soft, and a lovely flavor. The standout were his panna cottas. The judges couldn’t stop eating them! They thought they were delicious and the perfect texture. Both Paul and Prue took their bottle to finish off.

‘The Great British Baking Show’

Crystelle’s centrepiece was a focaccia bread clock flavored with za’atar and garlic. This was accompanied by chickpea curry top hats, cardamom and pistachio toadstool nankhatai biscuits, and chai-flavored sponges decorated as talking flowers. Her display looked stunning and very colorful. The judges loved her biscuits which were something they weren’t familiar with. They liked the blend of spices and the fudge-like texture. They also loved her sponges and thought they were delicious and well-balanced. Crystelle’s pies were also lovely and the curry had a nice kick to it, even if the curry was a little solid. However, it all went wrong with her focaccia. The judges said it did not resemble a focaccia at all! There was no rise to it; it was raw and completely inedible. Sadly, this knocked Crystelle out of the running for winning the competition.

Results

For the results this week, there was a garden party for everyone who had been working within the Baking Show bubble. They got to try the bakers’ showstopper treats.

It was a very close decision with all of the bakers receiving mixed feedback on their bakes this week. It was finally announced that Giuseppe was the winner! No one was surprised with this decision except for Giuseppe. It was amazing to watch his reaction go from a complete blank look of shock to pure joy. Crystelle and Chigs were so unbelievably happy for him and he thoroughly deserved the win. He stood out as an amazing baker from week one and was consistent throughout the competition.

The win meant a lot to him personally as well. He got into baking because of his dad, who also loves baking. His dad is currently elderly and in poor health and so Giuseppe was emotional to win this title for him. They now plan to write a recipe book together to pass on their Italian bakes.

Baking Show Best Bits

Here are some of my favorite non-baking moments from this week’s episode!

  • Noel bashing carrot cake for the entire signature challenge.
  • At the end of the episode, we got to catch up a little with the eliminated bakers. Lizzie and Freya had been on a road trip to visit all the other bakers. There had even been a reunion BBQ at Amanda’s house, sadly lacking Giuseppe who was working in Milan.

We’ve thoroughly enjoyed this season of The Great British Baking Show and we can’t wait for it to return next year. Make sure you check back here for all the latest news.
