‘In Every Generation’ Review: Kendare Blake Takes Us Back to the Buffyverse

“Into every generation, a slayer is born: one girl in all the world, a chosen one. She alone will wield the strength and skill to fight the vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness; to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their number. She is the Slayer.”

Just typing that brings back all the nostalgia from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the 90s television series that meant a lot to so many and impacted its audience. Well, good news! It is time to revisit Sunnydale and all that comes with the town’s name — Slayers, monsters, the Hellmouth, and high school — with In Every Generation.

This journey is brought to us by the New York Times bestselling author that wrote the Three Dark Crowns series, All These Bodies, and the Anna series, Kendare Blake. Blake is bringing fans back to the Buffyverse in a new trilogy beginning with In Every Generation. A little more about the author, and because I love the names, Blake and her husband have two cat-sons named Tyrion Cattister and Armpit McGee, dog-son Obi-Dog Kenobi, and dog-daughter Agent Scully.

Since we are returning to Sunnydale in this story, it means that after most of the city was a sinkhole at the end of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it has been rebuilt, and the Hellmouth is still closed and even monster-free.

Readers are introduced to Frankie, a sophomore at Sunnydale High School who is very passionate about the environment and learning magic. Even though most of it happened before she was born, Frankie knows about the history of Sunnydale and even grew up around magic, Slayers, and monsters. I mean, her aunt is the one and only Buffy Summers. Oh right, Frankie’s last name happens to be Rosenberg. Sound familiar? Yes, Frankie is the daughter of the one and only Willow Rosenberg. Being the daughter of a powerful witch and having your aunt being the legend Buffy means your life is anything but ordinary. A fact that Frankie and her friends will soon find out.

It begins with all the Slayers going to an annual event where they gather together. But something happens. Back at the Rosenberg women’s home, Frankie finds out what happened and gets asked if she has had any moments of exceptional strength, for example. That question confuses Frankie at first. Now, she is dealing with the fact that she is a Slayer and gets a crash course in what that means by learning on the job, even getting her ass kicked a few times. At least this world is not entirely new for her. Plus, she has her own group of Scoobies to help her out. Meanwhile, the word about what happened to the Slayers travels fast, and soon, vampires, demons, and more want to return to reopen the Hellmouth and take over the town of the legendary Buffy. Unbeknownst to them, there is still a Slayer there, who is now Sunnydale’s protector.

Reading this book brought me back to that initial giddy feeling that I had when I first got into the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There are excellent references back to the series, including one of my favorite episodes, “Hush.” Fans can look forward to hearing from and mentioning beloved characters from the television series, both present and past.

I got invested in Frankie’s journey right away. I found her to be a likable character because my favorite character from the television series was Willow. The writing made it effortless, and you cannot help but cheer her on in her journey. Blake gets the characters’ voices and mannerisms so wonderfully that I can picture them doing/saying the words coming off the pages and bringing their personalities alive. I would seriously love to see this become a television series, hint-hint powers that be.

Knowing that this will be a trilogy and this being the first book gave more time to focus on who the new characters were and do a natural development in their character growth that did not seem rushed. I cannot wait to read the following two books Blake pens surrounding Frankie Rosenberg, Slayer-witch. This is a book that any Buffy fan, old or new, would love. Blake did the Buffyverse justice.

In Every Generation is available now; stay tuned for our interview with the author coming out later this week!

Review: Two Fun New ‘Star Wars’ Books for Young Readers Out Now

Over the past year, Star Wars fans have had many new adventures to read about. No matter the age, there are books for everyone. Today, two new Star Wars books are now out for young fans to enjoy.

The Mandalorian Season 2 Junior Novel

The Mandalorian Season 2 Junior Novel recaps the second season of the hit Disney+ show for fans ages 8-12 years old. It’s a great way to relive the exciting high-stake adventures Mando goes on during his quest to return Grogu to his kind.

The book does a great job at describing what we see in the show in an easy-to-read manner for kids. The biggest opportunity that The Mandalorian Season 2 Junior Novel misses is getting a better idea of what is going on through the characters minds that we don’t get to experience while watching the series.

Being able to know the inner feelings of the characters could’ve added much more depth to the already beloved story. For example, what was Mando thinking when he had to take off his helmet and reveal his face? I would’ve loved to read about any anxiety or fear the intimidating bounty hunter was feeling in that moment.

A huge perk of this book, however, is the insert of photos from the show. Snapshots of some of the best moments in the second season are a great keepsake for The Mandalorian fans.

Star Wars: Galaxy of Creatures

Younger Star Wars fans have another fun book to read this year. Star Wars: Galaxy of Creatures explores the critters within the Star Wars Universe. This children’s book is based on the new Galaxy of Creatures animated shorts, and follows SF-R3, or “Aree,” as he learns about the galaxy’s wildlife, big and small.

Meant for children ages 5-8, Star Wars: Galaxy of Creatures includes 32-pages of laugh out loud humor and adorable pictures. The story can truly transport the young fan in your life to the galaxy far far away.

The Mandalorian Season 2 Junior Novel and Star Wars: Galaxy of Creatures are both out now. They are available for purchase anywhere books are sold.

‘Morbius’ Release Pushed To April

0

It’s not an early April Fool’s joke: Sony Pictures has delayed the Morbius release an additional three months.

The Marvel feature film starring Jared Leto (House of Gucci) will release on April 1, 2022 rather than January 28, 2022. The movie will now release for IMAX and premium large formats, and well after Spider-Man: No Way Home has made its record-breaking theatrical run.

Morbius follows the origin story of Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist with a rare blood disease who develops a cure. Unfortunately, cures come at a cost sometimes, and in Morbius’ case, the consequence is becoming a blood-thirsty half-vampire. Morbius will add to the list of anti-heroes joining Sony’s Shared Spider-Man Universe alongside Venom.

Jared Leto will star as Morbius alongside Jared Harris, Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. This movie will add to the ever-growing list of Spider-Man villains currently on the big screen rotation and will feature at least a cameo from Michael Keaton’s portrayal of Adrien Toomes/The Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The official synopsis for Morbius follows:

“One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease.
