‘The Umbrella Academy’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 10 “Oblivion”

Luther and Klaus are gone, and the rest of the Hargreeves have headed into Hotel Oblivion with Reginald for a mission that is sure to be exactly as the patriarch described … Read on to see how season 3 of The Umbrella Academy ends in “Oblivion.”

We’re Dead, Man

Klaus and Luther are reunited in the Void, watching TV and eating pizza in the middle of the desert. Pizza that has pineapple on it, much to the chagrin of Klaus. He has to break it to Luther that they’re dead, but Klaus is right at home.

Luther tells him that dad is absolutely a bug-alien and begs him to go back and warn Sloane and the others, but Klaus is done with the other side. This is his home. Luther punches him for abandoning the family, but who cares they’ll all be here soon enough? There’s also no pain in the Void, so have it at, Luther.

They chase each other throughout everyone else’s little pockets of paradise, ending with Luther finally getting through to Klaus, who agrees to try and get back to the others.

Hotel Oblivion

Five doesn’t buy that the Kugelblitz got Klaus, but there’s no time to argue it. They make their way to the lobby and fight over the bell, Diego knows what happens when that bell rings.

Five knows that Reginal killed Luther and Klaus, citing the way he got the family back together in the first place by killing himself. It’s perfectly on par. He also knows Allison has a big part in this. Allison, however, had no idea her brothers’ deaths were part of the plan. He assures her he had no part in it and that he’ll hold up his end of the agreement as long as she does.

Step one is finding the sigil, after that, it’s up to anyone’s best guess. Not even Reginald knows, and the team is certainly not pleased about that. Allison, Five, and Viktor go one way, Sloane, Ben, and Reginald another, with Diego and Lila rounding out the groups. Reginald, of course, leaves Sloane and Ben alone.

Five confronts Allison about the deal, he knows, and now she’s gotten Luther and Klaus killed. She won’t admit to it and leaves, Viktor chasing after her, Five following but unknowingly passing through a portal to an entirely new area of the hotel.

The same things happen to Diego and Lila as well as Ben and Sloane, who are found by Five. He’s figured it out, the hotel is virtually alive seemingly to keep them away from the lobby. A lobby where Reginald Hargreeves is found by Klaus back from the Void. He knocks him out cold and rings the bell. The battle is set to begin

There are actually four Guardians, and the teams take three of them out. Allison admits to her deal to Viktor but promises she had nothing to do with Klaus or Luther. When they all reconvene in the lobby, Klaus tells all of them the truth, Reginald owning up to it but promising them that the key to resetting the universe is in this hotel. And Five finds it moments before the final Guardian falls from the ceiling and slices his arm off, exactly like his 100-year-old self.

Sloane stands alone against the final Guardian until a familiar face returns. Luther. But he’s not really here, it’s Klaus transporting him here from the Void (finally giving Number 4 more of his comic powers!). Reginald tells Luther he did have a purpose outside of this mission, he had sent Luther to guard the most precious thing in the universe, most likely referring to Abigail on the moon. It’s starting to feel like Abigail is why Reginald was so hellbent on getting to reset the universe in the first place. He disappears when Klaus can no longer hold on.

The sigil is on the floor, seven stars for each of them to stand on, but not Allison. And it’s clear why, standing on the sigils is killing all seven of them, and Reg can’t keep up his end of the deal with Allison if she’s dead.

The hotel isn’t actually a hotel, it’s a machine meant to reset the universe, and the particles inside their bodies are the only things that can power it. A panel appears, allowing Reginald to program him what reality he wants to set. Allison stops him, slicing his head right in half, freeing her siblings in the knick of time. But the machine is set. Despite protests from her family, she pushes the button.

A New Reality

Allison returns home to find Claire and Ray, her dream come true. The others all emerge from the hotel to a brand new world in Obsidian Park, a memorial to Sir Reginald Hargreeves in the courtyard. All of them, including Luther, who now has his normal human body back, and Five’s arm and Diego’s fingers are also back intact. However, one is missing, Sloane. And so are all their powers.

Reginald was successful in resetting the universe. They all disperse, Luther to find Sloane, Klaus follows Luther, Ben grumpily stalks off, and Lila and Diego walk off into the sunset to live their lives.

Despite the memorial, Reginald is also alive and well in a skyscraper, Abigail at his side.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 is now streaming on Netflix. Take a look back at all of our coverage of the show, including episodic recaps and more.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 9 “Seven Bells”

It’s the end of the world as we know it as the Kugelblitz has destroyed all but Hotel Obsidian. Read on to find out what happens in The Umbrella Academy season 3, episode 9 “Seven Bells.”

More to the Moon

While we originally believed Luther was up on the moon to keep an eye for Viktor’s moon-shattering blast, turns out Reginald Hargreeves was using the moon for a whole different purpose. While Luther is fenced into his own little area, unable to pass a geo fence, out of his reach miles away is another facility. At this facility is a deceased woman cryogenically frozen, her name: Abigail Hargreeves.

The Mystery Bargain

Five is set on figuring out who Reggie was speaking to in the White Buffalo Suite last night, despite the fact he was blackout drunk while Allison is on an apologetic spree. She starts with Luther and adds in that dad has called a meeting at noon with a plan to save the universe. Luther sees her apology for what it is, a ploy to get him and Sloane to attend. Luther refuses but Sloane agrees.

Reginald heads out to work on Five, who is marveling at the Kugelblitz. He wants the world to end, especially like this. The Kugelblitz is clean and effective. Reginald reveals he’s seen the ends of worlds before and that he wishes he’d done more to help save those ones, and that’s what he needs their help with. He doesn’t want to lose another one. Five agrees to attend the meeting at noon if Reggie tells him who he was with in the Buffalo Suite last night, he assumes Ben or Klaus, but Reg insists he was alone. Not like Five was in any condition to remember, right?

Seven

In the meeting, Reggie cuts right to the chase. Mythology states the magic number is seven when faced with certain death and the universe has a built-in reset button via a portal that he built this very hotel around. They simply cross the portal and tap the button, and all will be well again (we absolutely believe everything Reggie says because he’s proven to be exceptionally honest in his entire existence as a masked alien…).

There is however, the Guardian, Diego and Lila have already met it, and that’s what complicates things. As Ben agrees, Five again tries to deduce who Reginald was talking to last night, continuing after agreement from Diego (who wants Lila to stay behind). Allison states everyone has to go, but Viktor wants a vote. They all part for an hour to think over how they’ll vote.

Allison makes her apology to Viktor, saying her pain is no excuse to hurt other people, but there’s something about their faces that knows this isn’t the true meaning of the apology.

Netflix

Vote

After the tally it’s Allison, Klaus, Ben, and Lila with dear old dad and Viktor, Diego, Luther, and Sloane staying behind. A tie, leaving Five with the remaining vote. Five decides to go with his future self still, and votes to stay. However, there must be seven that head into the portal, and Reg only has four.

A Unifying Moment

Luther finds Reginald in the White Buffalo Suite and discusses why he made the choice he did. If anyone has a right to be mad at Reginald it’s Luther, he was also his most loyal son. Reginald begs for forgiveness, and Luther grants it. Only to be killed by his father’s hand (quite literally his alien appendage…).

Reginald says the only way to unite a family is at a wedding or a funeral (he’s done the funeral bit before, hasn’t he?) and the wedding didn’t work. So Luther’s funeral it is.

As Five continues to try and figure out who Reg was talking to last night, Viktor approaches and tells him that he knows Allison’s apology was a fluke. It had an ulterior motive. That’s all Five needs to jog his memory. It was Allison in the Suite last night. Sloane screaming draws their attention and they join the rest of the family in the Suite with Luther’s body.

Diego blames the Guardian, Reg was smart to mimic the wounds a curved blade would cause. Reginald comes in shocked and Allison looks at him in horror, this is clearly more than she agreed to.

The Kugelblitz has finally hit the hotel and it’s now or never. Everyone agrees to head through the tunnel to save their own skins, avenge Luther, fix the universe — they all have their reasons — but there’s one problem. There are eight, and Reggie needs only seven

Right as he’s about to crawl through the tunnel Klaus is pushed away, he’s more trouble than he’s worth. But Klaus is smarter than he seems. Before the Kugelblitz can wipe him away, he throws himself on the horns of the White Buffalo, killing himself. Let’s see what his newfound abilities can do for him now.

‘The Umbrella Academy’: Does Ritu Arya Actually Play the Drums?

Warning: This article contains spoilers for season 3 of The Umbrella Academy.

The third season of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy is finally here, ushering in yet another disastrous, apocalyptic scenario for the Hargreeves siblings to begrudgingly contend with.

Based on the comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy follows the story of the Hargreeves children and their supernatural abilities. On October 1, 1989, 43 babies were inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy prior. Seven of those children were adopted by billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, and he raised them to become a superhero team called the Umbrella Academy.

The seventh episode of season 3, “Auf Wiedersehen,” shows a flashback of Ritu Arya’s Lila Pitts in West Berlin, Germany in 1989, following the death of her adoptive mother, the Handler, at the end of season 2. Joining in on the destruction of the Berlin Wall, Lila grabs a sledgehammer and digs out a Commission briefcase, an escape plan left behind by her mother. However, rather than traveling through time again, Lila meets a girl and starts playing drums in her band instead as she tries to forget Diego and the trauma she’s endured. We then learn that Stanley is not her and Diego’s son, but rather the child of the lead singer of her band.

While this storyline felt fitting for Lila, it was even more appropriate for Arya, who’s a musician in real life! Arya currently plays the drums in the dreamy, three-piece indie alt-pop band KIN.

KIN currently has a handful of songs available to stream — their latest single, “Cosmos,” was released back in February. Watch the music video for it here. Fans in the United Kingdom can look forward to catching KIN at several of their upcoming shows this year.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 8 “Wedding at the End of the World”

The Kugelblitz is bigger and badder than ever, but first, a wedding. Read on to find out what happens in episode 8 of The Umbrella Academy season 3, “Wedding at the End of the World.”

Hotel Obsidian

Turns out, Hotel Obsidian was built by none other than Sir Reginald Hargreeves (who we remember from last season is actually an alien) around a portal in the sky he’d sought out. That portal is what lies behind the secret door in the White Buffalo Suite. At the hotel’s grand opening event, he sent in a team to kill what lurked on the other side of the lighted tunnel. One returned barely alive but was able to mutter the words “all dead” before passing himself.

Why Us?

The Hargreeves are curious as to why they’re the last ones standing as the Kugelblitz has destroyed all but the block the hotel sits on. Ben knows it’s because they’re special, they’re the only ones with the ability to save the universe. But Five knows they’re too late. It’s over. They’ve spent the last 28 days saving the world from three different apocalypses (crazy it’s only been 28 days since Five returned to the Hargreeves in season 1) and each time they made it worse. He tells them that his 100-year-old self warned him not to save the world and he’s ready to hang up his Umbrella.

After that is when Luther and Sloane decide to announce their engagement to their siblings and they’re getting married that night.

It’s Too Late For Reggie

While he may have been able to kindle a relationship with Klaus, the others aren’t so forgiving of dear old dad. Luther rescinds Sloane’s invitation to their wedding, however, Ben is ready to fight, still working to gain approval. But Five has a statement that actually leaves Reggie shocked. He knows about Project Oblivion and he knows that Reggie is planning on gambling all of their lives.

When everyone disperses after Klaus hauls Reg away, Luther asks Viktor to be the best man at the wedding, to which Viktor accepts. It also turns out Ben is the only one not invited to Luther’s bachelor party.

Klaus is still trying to help him bond with the others and he convinces Reg to still attend the wedding tonight as dad and not a boss.

Luther’s Bachelor Party

Karaoke. Need there be more? The perfect send-off to the Earth as we know it is the Hargreeves singing and dancing together, particularly a duet featuring Klaus and Five. Luther also convinces Viktor to talk to Allison, he doesn’t want her to be alone at the end of it all.

Ben is still upset he didn’t get an invite, and in a conversation with Sloane she makes it clear that he’s more upset about being left out of the festivities than anything else that’s going on. They’re the only two Sparrows remaining, but after her marriage, she’ll be considering herself an Umbrella as she tells Ben he’s now Number 1 of one.

The Wedding

In a ceremony officiated by the best of choices — Klaus — Sloane and Luther are “married as shit” here at the end of the world.

Klaus is still trying to convince Luther to give dad a chance, and Luther still isn’t having it. Then, Reggie walks in. He sits alone, but Lila requests a formal invitation. Lila and Reg hit it off and Reggie congratulates Diego on the catch and tells him he’d have made a superb father.

Seemingly on a mission to unite the families, Klaus goes to Ben next and chats with him, lending a listening ear as a very drunk Ben vents about his frustration with not being invited to the bachelor party and how the Umbrellas like their Ben so much but not him.

Reggie makes a speech about Sloane as Viktor tries to reconcile with Allison at Luther’s request. Allison doesn’t accept Viktor’s apology, but Reggie delivers quite the sensational speech that seems to land with the others.

They all gather outside, Ben now welcomed into the group, to marvel at the swirling orange Kugelblitz as one big family. That is, until Five takes off with his stomach churning threatening to hurl. As he returns to his room, he stumbles across a plant to empty his stomach into a plant right across from the White Buffalo Suite. And there, he sees Reg solidifying a deal with someone before passing out in the elevator.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 7 “Auf Wiedersehen”

Diego is down a few fingers after a run-in with a scary something in Hotel Oblivion, Allison has killed Harlan and delivered him to the Sparrows, and Klaus and Reggie are still hard at work trying to figure out the extent of Klaus’ abilities. Read on to see what happens in episode 7 of The Umbrella Academy season 3!

Berlin

After her mother’s death and the loss of the Hargreeves, Lila returns to the Commission and discovers the truth at the Infinite Switchboard, her mother really did put a bullet in her heart. Herb can’t have her around the Commission and offers to take her anywhere she wants at any time period, so she chooses West Berlin in 1989 where she digs out a stashed Commission briefcase hidden by her mother in the Berlin Wall. There she joins a band as a drummer (shoutout to Ritu Arya’s actual band KIN where she plays the drums!) and moves in with Trudy and Stan before Stan agrees to help her win Diego over once again.

Klaus’ Reanimation Training

With his newly discovered gift of being literally immortal, Reggie and Klaus set out to help Klaus master his ability (because if he stays dead for 22 minutes that’s more than enough time for his organs to be harvested). Over and over Klaus gets hit by speeding car after speeding car until he manages to bring himself back to the world of the living in under two minutes. Now he’s ready. But ready for what?

Now it’s time for part two and Reggie takes Klaus to a cemetery where he’s left to be chased by ghosts. Reggie motivates him to take charge, citing that Klaus’ Reginald father did what he did to make Klaus doubt himself and feel small so he could be controlled.

He faces the spirits again and somehow banishes them away in a flash of light emitting from his body.

Luther’s Split Allegiance Unites

Loyal to his own family, and Sloane now, Luther is left in a tough place to unite the families for the common cause of solving the Kugelblitz. He and Sloane go and fetch Five, Diego, and Lila as they argue about heading back over to Hotel Oblivion to bring them back to the Sparrow Academy.

At the Academy, Allison comes clean to Viktor about killing Harlan. Allison tells him that Harlan had told her the truth about their mothers and that she knows Viktor was lying about it. The two get into it, Allison is angry over how adamantly Viktor tried to save Harlan but has done nothing to try and bring Claire back, and that every bad thing that has happened to them can be traced back to Viktor. And somehow he never has to pay for that. Her new strengthened powers from Harlan’s energy field return, sealing Viktor’s mouth shut and rendering him unable to breathe with a simple command. Viktor heads to Ben’s room upstairs after striking Allison across the face, and the planning continues.

They head downstairs to get a look at the Kugelblitz and Sloane and Five formulate a plan to trap it using Sloane, Viktor, Lila, and Christopher. They’re using its own gravity to condense it and then Grace arrives to save “God,” forcing the others to fend her and her flamethrower off until Five transports her upstairs and kills her.

They manage to get the Kugelblitz safely stored inside Christopher, the next Kugel wave coming out as a fart.

Christos Kalohoridis/Netflix

Time to Celebrate

With the Kugelblitz safely contained it’s time to party. Champagne is passed around the dancing heroes, but Luther is up on the roof seeing the reality of the destruction caused. The world is quite literally burning as a result of the Kugel waves. Sloane heads up to find him and they plan to visit Italy right before Luther asks for her hand in marriage with a handmade ring containing a rock from the moon. She agrees, and it’s time to plan a wedding!

Lila also has a confession. She didn’t only bring Stan here to mess with Diego, it’s because she actually is pregnant and wanted to see how Diego would be as a father. She wants to be a family.

Five Levels with Viktor

If there are any Hargreeves who can make a point and nail it home, it’s Five. He finds Viktor in Reggie’s office and tells him that there is no formula that makes up for the lives people like them — powerful people — take. You can’t save so many people to absolve yourself for the lives you took. They’re too powerful to be making decisions like this, especially alone.

You know what they call a superhero who works alone and doesn’t listen to anybody? A villain.

Five

He assures Viktor he’s always here for him, no more going rogue, but if he lies to them again Five will kill Viktor himself.

Sparrow Split

Fei wants to kill the Umbrellas now that the Kugelblitz is taken care of, but Ben has made some kind of deal with Reggie that needs them. Fei is furious that he’s gone and made this deal without anyone’s input and she and Christopher decide that they’ll no longer be following his orders.

That is until the Kugelblitz breaks free from Christopher, and sucks in Fei and everyone else in its path as he swallows the building, Five getting everyone else out in the knick of time. Back to square one.

Pride Spotlight: Luz Noceda and Amity Blight from ‘The Owl House’

Welcome to the latest installment of our 2022 Pride Month Series! For the entire month of June, we will be highlighting different members of the LGBTQIA+ community who we think are great examples of representation and dynamic characterization. We will focus on fictional characters, celebrities, and activists alike — the positive voices within the LGBTQIA+ community and in mainstream media. Today’s spotlight turns to Luz and Amity of Disney Channel’s hit animated series The Owl House!

In the last few years, children’s animation has become more and more willing to center LGBTQIA+ characters and stories. Long seen as a realm where queer coding rather than clear representation was the only option, creators are increasingly including explicitly queer characters and storylines. Nowhere is this sea change more apparent than on The Owl House, the brilliant series by bisexual creator Dana Terrace.

Disney Channel

The Owl House follows Dominican-American human Luz Noceda (Sarah-Nicole Robles), who finds herself caught up in a world of magic she never knew existed when she accidentally finds a portal to the Demon Realm. As Luz becomes the apprentice to witch Eda Clawthorne and gets to know the other students at Hexside School, she forms a friendship and later romantic relationship with perfectionist witch Amity Blight (Mae Whitman). A mix of horror and comedy, The Owl House is the type of children’s show that adults can (and do) enjoy, making it one of the most successful recent animated series.

A big part of that success has been the relationship between Luz and her enemy-turned-friend-turned-girlfriend Amity. Luz and Amity’s relationship is a slow burn, with Amity initially hating Luz before slowly realizing that hatred is rooted in biases and incorrect assumptions. Amity’s growing crush on Luz is all blushing animations and sweet glances as the previously snobby witch lets her guard down. It all comes to a head in “Enchanting Grom Fright,” in which a shy Amity tries to get the courage to ask Luz to go to the “Grom” with her via a note she carries around throughout the episode.

Disney Channel

But Amity is selected as Grom Queen, which means she will have to face her biggest fear to defeat Grometheus the Fear Bringer. She admits to Luz that she doesn’t want to face this fear (later revealed to be Luz rejecting her), so Luz volunteers as Grom Queen to save her friend. It all goes horribly wrong before the duo defeats Grometheus, and Amity is too embarrassed to give her the note asking her out. But in the end, the pair share a dance as Grom Queens even as Luz is oblivious to Amity’s original intentions.

In the season two premiere, Amity finds the courage to stand up to her cold parents because of her love for Luz, which Luz finally begins to see after hearing Amity yell “Stay away from my Luz!” during a battle. After more pining from poor Amity, Luz slowly begins to realize her own feelings, though she’s not sure how to put them in words. “Through The Looking Glass Ruins” marks a turning point for the duo as both explore their feelings separately. Luz admits to Gus that she sneaks to the library specifically to see Amity at work, while Amity tells her siblings Emira and Edric that, “I’m thinking things I’ve never thought before. I’m feeling things I never used to feel!”

For Amity, her entire worldview has been changed by knowing and loving Luz, something her strict parents would never have allowed as it would cause her distraction from her studies and their plans for her life. Emira gently tells Amity that while she may feel confused, she is the happiest she has ever been. She helps Amity dye her hair pink rather than her signature green, symbolically shedding her perfect exterior curated by her mother for good. In a moment of overwhelming joy, Amity kisses Luz on the cheek while telling her that, “You always have a way of sneaking into people’s hearts.”

Disney Channel

The kiss rocks Luz’s world even as Amity is horribly embarrassed by what she sees as a slip-up. She vows to leave Luz forever to avoid facing what she assumes will be Luz’s rejection. Luz, meanwhile, just wants to show Amity that she does care for her, but Amity keeps avoiding her. Finally, in “Knock, Knock, Knockin’ on Hooty’s Door,” house demon Hooty attempts to help Luz ask Amity out. Luz wants the event to be perfect and “cool” enough for her “cotton-candy-haired goddess,” not wanting to do the cheesy human customs. But she keeps missing her chance waiting for just the right romantic scenario to impress her. Hooty’s solution is to kidnap Amity, putting the two in stereotypically romantic scenarios like a Tunnel of Love to try to prompt Luz to admit how she feels. Amity is thrilled at this development, not minding the goofiness of the gesture, but when a frustrated Luz destroys it all, Amity assumes Luz doesn’t return her feelings. Hooty is understandably distressed that he has messed everything up.

In his hysteria at not being able to help his friends, Hooty’s emotions go haywire and threaten to destroy everything. To save everyone, Luz is about to confess her love when Amity beats her to it by asking her out in a confident blurt. It’s an adorable moment that fans had long awaited, and it remains a groundbreaking episode in children’s television. In the current season of the series, the two are officially girlfriends and made history with the first kiss between queer lead characters in a cartoon series. It remains to be seen how the two’s story will eventually end given the series’ unfortunate cancellation, but fans certainly hope Luz and Amity will be together in the end.

While The Owl House is a fun show for anyone who chooses to watch, it means much more to queer viewers. Luz and Amity are canonically queer from the first season before they start dating, with Luz identifying as bisexual and Amity as a lesbian. The duo are officially Disney’s first leading bisexual and lesbian characters, not just in animation but across all mediums. Even more importantly, since both Luz and Amity are leading characters on the series, they and by extension their queerness are a large part of the show’s marketing. “Lumity” has been the subject of compilation videos curated by Disney Channel and targeted to their young audience, a major step forward that was unthinkable even a few years ago. They also aren’t the only queer characters on the show. Raine Whispers is non-binary, using they/them pronouns, and is a love interest for Eda. They are also voiced by non-binary actor Avi Roque. Lilith is aromantic and asexual, shown by her coming out to Hooty via letter in a livestream performance for the Zebra Coalition (and later confirmed by actress Cissy Jones.)

None of the characters encounters homophobia, and why would they? This a magical realm where demons exist, after all. This makes The Owl House a safe world of escapism for children just beginning the process of discovering their sexualities. For older queer viewers, watching Luz and Amity’s relationship unfold demonstrates just how far children’s television has come in depicting queer characters. Even Whitman, who identifies as pansexual herself, publicly acknowledged the impact being a part of the series has had on her as a queer adult.

Disney Channel has featured coming out storylines before. But The Owl House is different. Coming out is never a concern for Luz or Amity, with Amity more concerned about dating a human than dating a girl. Their sexualities are simply a part of them and the least interesting aspect of their romance. It’s the same kind of first crush storyline nearly every Disney Channel series has included, but with two comfortably queer characters. While storylines like Cyrus’ coming out on Andi Mack are incredibly important for kids to see since they take place in our world, it’s also nice for them to have examples of uncomplicated, magical queer joy.

While Luz and Amity may have their fair share of witchy angst, the sweetness of the love between them and their stumbling way of expressing it is relatable for kids just beginning to have crushes. Rather than make young queer viewers feel ashamed or like the world will reject them for their feelings, The Owl House presents a found family full of love, acceptance, and happiness.

The Owl House is currently airing the second half of its second season on Disney Channel, while the shortened third and final season is in production. Stay tuned for more Pride Spotlights this month!
