New ‘Star Wars: The High Republic’ Trailer And More Revealed During Livestream Event

It’s finally here! The first reads in Star Wars: The High Republic publishing campaign are out on the shelves, and to celebrate this new era, Lucasfilm revealed some big news — including a trailer — during a livestream event with some of the authors.

The trailer showcases the new era that fans can explore through the adult and young adult novels, children’s books, and comics. The stories are set centuries before the events of The Skywalker Saga, and show the Jedi Order at its most powerfulYou can watch the full trailer below.

We also got a closer look at some new characters we will be introduced to, including new galactic pilots in Claudia Gray’s Into The Dark as well as new alien species like the Bonbraks.

There will be an ongoing series of short original stories set in The High Republic era in the Star Wars Insider magazine, and a new graphic novel is now in the mix! Author Cevan Scott and artist Rachael Scott are teaming up to bring us The Monster of Temple Peak. And if that’s not enough, The Edge of Balance will be a Star Wars story like we’ve never seen before: in the manga format.

Some of my personal favorite characters so far within the publishing campaign are coming back as well! In her first young adult novel, Justina Ireland will be continuing the adventures of Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh, Padawan Reath Silas, and aspiring inventor Avon Starros in Out of the Shadows. Read my review of Ireland’s middle grade novel A Test of Courage that introduces these characters here. And speaking of middle grade novels, the publishing campaign’s second one was also announced. Race to Crashpoint Tower will be written by Daniel José Older.

And to top it all off, we can expect this publishing campaign that explores the galaxy like we’ve never seen it to continue for a while. During the hour long livestream event, it was revealed that this is just the first phase of in the multi-year rollout. While we don’t know a whole lot about each phase, we now know the titles of them — Phase I: Light of the Jedi, Phase II: Quest of the Jedi, and Phase III: Trials of the Jedi.

You can watch the full livestream event here. Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule (young adult novel), A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland (middle grade novel), and The Great Jedi Rescue by Cevan Scott (picture book) are all available to buy now.

Clancy Brown Joins ‘Dexter’ Revival Cast as Series Regular

0

As preparation continues on the upcoming Dexter revival, the show has found its primary villain. TVLine exclusively revealed that Clancy Brown (CarnivaleBillions) will star as Kurt Caldwell, “the unofficial mayor of the small town of Iron Lake.”

There’s no confirmation on whether Iron Lake will be the main setting for the revival. It may play a large role, as the last time viewers saw Dexter, he was a lumberjack in a (presumably) small town, which could likely be Iron Lake.

There’s currently no further casting news. Michael C. Hall will return to play Dexter Morgan and executive produce. Clyde Phillips will return to executive produce and showrun. John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, and Scott Reynolds also return to executive produce, along with Marcos Siega who will executive produce and direct. Bill Carraro will join as executive producer.

Dexter will begin filming in early 2021, with a tentative release date of Fall 2021. It will run for 10 episodes on Showtime.

Review: Find Out Who the ‘Psi-Lords’ are in the Graphic Novel by Fred Van Lente

0

Set in the Valiant Universe and throughout ten issues, fans were first introduced to Psi-Lords in 1994. Now, in a new story set in the present day, New York bestselling writer Fred Van Lente (Generation Zero) is reintroducing us to the team of characters in an out of this world adventure. Joining him in this eight-issue copy is artist Renato Guedes (Secret Avengers), who brings the story to life with his striking imagery. Nerds and Beyond was fortunate enough to get a copy of Psi-Lords to review.

Van Lente takes it back to the origin story of when the four main characters wake up in space with no memories and powerful abilities and a voice telling them to find the Psi-Lords. As the story moves forward, readers find out about their powers and purpose, along with the characters themselves. Forming a team is Tank, who controls and manipulates force fields around himself; Artisan can create constructs out of light, having the power to control electromagnetic spectrum and has telepathy is Beacon; then there is Hazard, she can create or take away life forces. After seeking help from Scion, the group of cosmic beings starts a journey that takes them all over the galaxy.

I am a fan of the eye-catching retro, almost heavy metal style art of Guedes. He gives such detail and personality to each character and brings life to the page – plus tiny cat people! The way issue eight ends, I hope the author continues to do more issues with Guedes to keep the art the same style. The one-liners and banter were great, let alone the fact that Hazard’s reaction to pretty much everything is to kill it. Having read the comics when they came out in the late 90s, I was familiar with the story and enjoyed how Van Lente took the main parts from that to focus on and create a renewed beginning for the series. One thing for readers to remember or be aware of is since the characters themselves do not know anything about who they are, there is a gradual character build rather than the usual information-based right away. I would recommend this graphic novel if you are a fan of Guardians of the Galaxy or Lantern Corps.

Psi-Lords by Fred Van Lente is available to own now.

Review: A Refreshing Tale Of Courage — ‘Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test Of Courage’ Takes Readers On Fun Adventure

The time to explore The High Republic era in Star Wars is here! Today, two of the stories within the Star Wars: The High Republic publishing campaign are available for all fans — one being Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage — which takes readers on an exciting yet emotionally-fueled adventure.

This canon middle-grade (targeting children 8-12 years old) novel follows a group of kids, all from different backgrounds, as they escape a sabotaged cruiser and land on an unknown moon. The High Republic stories are set hundreds of years before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, which kick-starts the events of the Skywalker Saga. Written by Justina Ireland, the language and navigation of Star Wars lore within this book is easy to understand, making it the perfect book for the young Star Wars fan in your life. While this story is aimed for younger kids, the story can capture the heart of anyone no matter their age. Trust me, it’s definitely hard to put down once you’ve started.

Warning: There are spoilers beyond this point.

The twenty-three chapter story takes readers on a surprisingly high-stakes adventure with children (around the same age as the intended audience) at the forefront.

A Test of Courage begins with tragedy that brings together the main characters — Vernestra “Vern” Rwoh, a very young and recently knighted Jedi; a slightly younger Padawan learner, Imri; Avon Starros, the daughter of a senator who has a nack of inventing and learning; and Honesty Weft, the son of a Dalnan diplomat. They are all brought together on the Steady Wing — a luxury liner meant to take them to a dedication ceremony for the Republic’s new Outer Rim space station — the Starlight Beacon. However, two members of the Nihil — a group of anarchistic marauders — sabotage the ship by planting explosives. No one survives the destruction except for the young group.

This is when we really get to learn about each character. The children are left stranded alone with no guidance on an unfamiliar moon that has acid rain and is mostly filled with uncharted forests. The chapters alternate between the point-of-view of the different characters, which ultimately gives more depth to the story. We learn about Vern and how humble she is. She doesn’t see herself as anyone special even though she is one of the youngest Padawans to pass her Jedi trials. We see Imri deal with the grief of losing his master in the explosion and navigate through intruding insecure thoughts. We see Honesty’s struggle to feel useful in this unfamiliar place, while grieving and honoring his late father. And we learn about Avon’s past and why she was sent away from her mother. The mix of Force users, non-Force users, and droids within A Test of Courage makes for a refreshing take on Star Wars tales. Especially through Avon, the reader gets the rare perspective of a non-Force user’s curiosity and, quite frankly, confusion as to how the Jedi and the Force work.

While shorter than other novels due to its younger targeted audience, A Test of Courage really allows the reader to understand each character’s past and how that affects them now, which is greatly appreciated. Star Wars fans are known to want to know as much as they can about characters within this universe, and this book allows them to learn about the characters and feel what they feel in a short amount of time. It’s encouraging to see a book that really dives into the whys and how comes of the decisions each character makes.

Things really pick up within the story after the group finds out that the Nihil followed them onto the moon they sought refuge on. When they learn that the explosion was intentional and no one was meant to survive, this causes unique internal conflict for each of the characters. For example, Honesty and Imri are filled with rage. They believe in order to give justice to the ones they lost, they need to seek revenge and kill those responsible. This leads Imri on a path toward the dark side. This moment within the story is truly fascinating, because not only do we see conflict between the Nihil and the group, we see conflict between the young characters as well. The reader is taken into the mind of Imri as he embraces these negative emotions, which you don’t get to see often. While it shouldn’t have been surprising to see the character give into dark side thoughts, due to the hints throughout the book — including a reference to the Nightsisters when Vern shows Imri her modified once lightsaber, now lightwhip — the writing is so compelling that the reader’s authentic reaction would be that of shock.

In an intense fight with Vern as she tries to stop Imri, he goes as far as saying he’d kill her if she got in the way. This moment proves how influential the dark side can be, no matter who is tip-toeing the line between good and bad. However, following his defeat, Imri soon realizes that he let his rage and grief control him, bringing him back to the light. The relationship between Vern and Imri throughout A Test of Courage is so intriguing and seeing them go head-to-head is definitely satisfying. I do wish, however, this conflict between the two lasted a bit longer.

Thankfully, the book ends on a happy note. The children make it to the Starlight Beacon, and Vern vows to help Imri and work with him to become the best Jedi he can be as his new master. While short, the ending leaves the reader wanting to pick up the other stories within the multi-media campaign due to the hints of a larger story that will be explored within this era. However, The High Republic: A Test of Courage can be read and enjoyed on its own as well.

I highly recommend picking up this book, whether its for a younger loved one or yourself. Overall, Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage brings a new and refreshing adventure in the Star Wars universe, and the more in-depth look at characterization and character growth make the story even more impactful for the reader. Plus, it’s an easy read that you can get through pretty quickly, which is a bonus in this fast-paced world we’re living in today.

Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage is available now. You can buy it wherever books are sold as well as Amazon. Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi is also available for purchase.

The next book in The High Republic publishing campaign, Into The Dark, will be available on February 2. You can pre-order it here. Stay tuned for a review on that as well!

The CW Releases New Photos for ‘Riverdale’ Season 5, Episode 1 “Chapter Seventy-Seven: Climax”

0

Season 5 of Riverdale is just over two weeks away, and on top of the first five photos from the season premiere that TVLine exclusively reported, The CW has released 15 new photos for Riverdale High’s Senior Prom, as well as an official description! “Chapter Seventy-Seven: Climax” is one of three episodes that was meant to air towards the end of the previous season, but due to COVID, it got pushed to the opening of the upcoming fifth season.

The new images show the gang, as well as the parents, enjoying prom night, for the most part, with Veronica singing. It also looks like Jughead and Betty will be spending their prom investigating. It will be interesting to see how Zane Holtz’s KO Kelly comes into the picture but also a treat for Katy Keene fans. Perhaps a new friendship will form between him and Archie. It also raises the question if any other Katy Keene characters will be making appearances, seeing that after a few episodes, the storyline will jump ahead several years, seemingly catching up to Katy Keene‘s timeline.

Season 5 of Riverdale premieres on Wednesday, January 20 at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on The CW!

New ‘9-1-1: Lone Star’ Video Shows “The Importance of Inclusion” for the Cast and Characters

9-1-1: Lone Star‘s second season is almost here, and FOX has released a new video showing the importance of inclusion, both among the cast and characters, in today’s world.

Rob Lowe mentions the storytelling this year is more personal, while Ronen Rubinstein says playing a gay firefighter has brought some of the most humbling experiences of his life, both as an actor and as a human. Rubinstein hopes that with season 2, they can make people feel seen, heard, and understood. Natacha Karam explains that the world we live in is diverse and made up of so many different people and cultures; there’s no one way to be Muslim, there’s no one way to be gay, and there isn’t only one way to be human. Brian Michael Smith says that he can be a hero and to be that kind of representation is exactly why he became an actor in the first place while Rafael Silva says by playing an LGBTQIA+ character he can have a voice, not only for himself but for other people.

The video is a mix between cast commentary and new scenes from the upcoming season that feature more Tarlos, 126’s newest Paramedic Captain, and a first look at some of the calls the crew will be dealing with, including one that happens over a Zoom call.

To read more about some of Lone Star‘s representation and inclusion, check out our Pride Month articles on Rubinstein’s T.K. Strand and Smith and his character Paul Strickland!

Season 2 of 9-1-1: Lone Star premieres on Monday, January 18 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on FOX following the season 4 premiere of 9-1-1!
