‘Palm Springs’ Takes Home Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie Super Award Among Others in Critics Super Choice Awards 2021

The inaugural Critics Choice Super Awards took place tonight. The award show was created to honor the most popular, fan-obsessed genres across both television and movies, including superhero/comic book, science fiction/fantasy, horror, action, and animation.

Boasting nominations in the Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie, Best Actor in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie, Best Actress in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie, and Best Villain in a Movie categories, Palm Springs managed to take an award in all but one category it was nominated in. The movie took home Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie, while leads Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti respectively secured Best Actor and Actress in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie (J.K. Simmons was unfortunately edged out by Jim Carrey for Best Villain in a Movie).

Palm Springs follows characters Nyles (Andy Samberg) and Sarah (Cristin Milioti) who have a chance meeting at the Palm Springs wedding of Sarah’s sister Tala (Camila Mendes) and her fiancé Abe (Tyler Hoechlin) and subsequently become stuck in an infinite time loop. As Sarah comes to terms with being stuck, she begins to embrace Nyles’ carefree nihilistic attitude as the two fall for each other while trying to make the most of the never-ending November 9 and come to terms with their new reality.

Angela Bassett Wins Critics Choice Super Award for Best Actress in an Action Series for ‘9-1-1’

The first-ever Critics Choice Super Awards were held tonight on The CW, and many films and series were nominated. 9-1-1, as well as Angela Bassett, were both contenders in the Best Action Series and Best Actress in an Action Series categories respectively. Though 9-1-1 unfortunately lost to History’s Vikings, Bassett took home the Best Actress award! Bassett was up against Jennifer Connelly from Snowpiercer, Esme Creed-Miles from Hanna, Mireille Enos from Hanna, Katheryn Winnick from Vikings, and Alison Wright from Snowpiercer.

Created by Ryan Murphy, 9-1-1 follows the lives of first responders at firehouse 118 in Los Angeles as well as the LAPD and first premiered on FOX in January 2018. Three years and one spin-off later, the show is gearing up for its biggest season yet, as the first responders will be saving people during a major mudslide. Bassett’s Athena Grant Nash is an LAPD Sergeant and remains one of the most badass and powerful characters on the show for her tough love and gut instincts, risking her life to help people and to make sure those who should serve time do.

Check out the complete list of winners here.

Catch the season 4 premiere of 9-1-1 on Monday, January 18 at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on FOX, followed by the season 2 premiere of 9-1-1: Lone Star! You can stream the first three seasons of 9-1-1 now on Hulu.

Jurnee Smollett and ‘Lovecraft Country’ Bring Home Two Critics Choice Super Awards

The inaugural Critics Choice Super Awards took place this evening, an award show created to honor the most popular, fan-obsessed genres across both television and movies, including superhero/comic book, science fiction/fantasy, horror, action, and animation.

Among the shows nominated was the HBO original series Lovecraft Country. The show was nominated for five awards total: Best Villian in a Horror Series, Abbey Lee; Best Actor in a Horror Series, Jonathan Majors and Michael K. Williams; Best Actress in a Horror Series, Jurnee Smollett and Wunmi Mosaku; and Best Horror Series. Jurnee Smollett earned the award for Best Actress in a Horror Series, and the show itself won Best Horror Series.

Lovecraft Country follows Atticus Freeman as he, his childhood friend Letitia “Leti” Lewis, and his uncle George travel across the Jim Crow South in search of Atticus’ father Montrose. Throughout their journey, the group faces monsters — in every sense of the word — learn about magic, and uncover shocking secrets about the Freeman family history. Season 1 is available to stream now on HBO Max. Find our recaps and other coverage of the show here.

‘The Boys’ Wins Four Awards, Including Best Superhero Series, at Critics Choice Super Awards

The inaugural Critics Choice Super Awards took place this evening, an award show created to honor the most popular, fan-obsessed genres across both television and movies, including superhero/comic book, science fiction/fantasy, horror, action and animation.

Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys received five nominations in total, and two of them were for the same category. The show ended up winning every single category that it was nominated for in a truly diabolical sweep.

Leads Karl Urban and Antony Starr were pitted against one another for Best Actor in a Superhero Series, both of whom are incredibly talented and impressive in their own right. We’re not sure how well this bodes for season 3 … because the most notorious Supe ended up taking the lead on this award.

Our epic season 2 villain Aya Cash, who portrays Stormfront, took home the award for Best Actress in a Superhero Series.

Because one award just wasn’t enough to convey his evil brilliance that fans just love to hate, Starr also took home the award for Best Villain in a Series.

Finally, the show itself won the category for Best Superhero Series. The Boys was up against a handful of strong contenders, including DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Doom Patrol, The Flash, Lucifer, and The Umbrella Academy.

The Boys, based on the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darrick Roberston, explores a world in which superheroes exist. The show flips this popular genre on its head, though, because many of these super-powered humans in question are just power-hungry and downright evil. The most twisted of them all are The Seven, a team of celebrity Supes employed by the villainous corporation Vought. The Boys, meanwhile, are a ragtag group of wayward vigilantes fighting to bring down Vought and the Supes once and for all.

The Boys stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Karen Fukuhara, Tomer Capon, Laz Alonso, and more. Season 3 of The Boys is set to begin filming soon.

Seasons 1 and 2 of The Boys are now streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. Make sure to check out our recaps and review of the show’s hit second season.

If you missed out on the live show tonight, it will be streaming tomorrow (January 11) free on The CW app and cwtv.com!

Jensen Ackles Wins Critics Choice Super Award for ‘Supernatural’

The inaugural Critics Choice Super Awards — an award show created to honor the most popular, fan-obsessed genres across both television and movies, including superhero/comic book, science fiction/fantasy, horror, action, and animation — took place this evening. As part of the festivities, Supernatural star Jensen Ackles took home the award for Best Actor in a Horror Series for his work as Dean Winchester, a role he has played since 2005. Ackles thanked the fans and his co-star, Jared Padalecki, in his acceptance speech, calling the honor the “cherry on top” of the end of the series.

Supernatural finished its 15-year run in November 2020, making it one of the longest running genre series in history. The series itself was nominated for Best Horror Series while Ackles and co-star Jared Padalecki were both nominated for Best Actor in a Horror Series.

‘The Mandalorian’ Wins Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Series at the Critics Choice Super Awards

The inaugural Critics Choice Super Awards took place this evening, an award show created to honor the most popular, fan-obsessed genres across both television and movies, including superhero/comic book, science fiction/fantasy, horror, action and animation.

The Mandalorian, the first live-action Star Wars television series, was nominated for two awards. Though the show’s incredibly talented lead Pedro Pascal unfortunately did not win in his category, Best Actor in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Series, the show itself won the award for Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Series!

The Mandalorian was up against other strong contenders in this category, including Outlander, Raised by Wolves, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Upload, and What We Do in the Shadows.

The Mandalorian follows a mysterious Mandalorian bounty hunter named Din Djarin as he traverses the outer reaches of a galaxy far, far away in the wake of the fall of the Empire. The show premiered on Disney+ in late 2019 and recently finished airing its (incredible) second season. Seasons 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian are now streaming exclusively on Disney+. You can read our recaps for each episode here.
