The Story of Evan Buckley is Coming in New Promo for ‘9-1-1’ Season 4, Episode 5 “Buck Begins”

0

With less than a week to go until we finally learn the story of Evan “Buck” Buckley, a new promo for the upcoming episode “Buck Begins” of FOX’s hit first responder drama 9-1-1 has arrived.

9-1-1 just recently entered its fourth season, and over the years the show has presented its “Begins” series, which are character-centric episodes that dive into the backstory of a particular person. These episodes are always guaranteed to be emotional, high-stakes journeys, with the most recent being Eddie’s heart-pounding fight for survival in the tunnel juxtaposed with the agonizing story of how he earned his silver star in the army. We’ve also seen “Begins” episodes for Bobby, Athena, Hen, and Chimney.

Through all of this, fans have been patiently hoping and waiting to see Oliver Stark’s Buck get his own chapter as well. After the tragic bombshell that was dropped in this week’s episode “9-1-1, What’s Your Grievance?” the stage has finally been set for “Buck Begins.”

Watch the new promo for “Buck Begins” below.

In the final moments of the previous episode, Maddie told Buck that the boy in the photo was their brother who died, Daniel. The episode came to a close before Buck could respond, but according to this promo, we’ll hopefully pick back up on that conversation — “I had a brother? I don’t understand why no one told me.”

“Buck Begins” will find the 118 responding to a dangerous 5-alarm fire … and Buck — of course — ends up trapped. The stills from the episode that have already been released include photos of the fire, along with flashbacks of the Buckley family. It remains to be seen how the format of this “Begins” episode will play out, as we’ve seen it done several different ways thus far.

The official synopsis for the episode is as follows:

“The 118 race to save the lives of workers trapped in a five-alarm factory fire. Meanwhile, Maddie reveals a painful family secret that causes Buck to confront his childhood and answer why he is the daredevil he is today”

“Buck Begins” will air on FOX on Monday, February 15 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, followed by a new episode of 9-1-1: Lone Star at 9 p.m ET/PT.

Review: It’s a Dangerous Journey in ‘The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: National Anthem’ #5 by Gerard Way and Shaun Simon

The things inside you are killing you

The penultimate chapter of Gerard Way and Shaun Simon’s The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: National Anthem is here.

National Anthem has been quite a ride thus far. We’ve been following the exploits of the the original Killjoy, Mike Milligram, and his merry band of … well, they used to be teenage exterminators (until their memories were wiped and they were decommissioned). Despite what they were led to believe about the Analog Wars, something wicked still lurks in the world. And thus, against all odds, the remaining members of the gang have gotten back together and hit the road in the Trans Am once more. Oh, and a belated congratulations to Mike, because he quite literally just found out that he has a kid.

The Killjoys may be back in action, but they’re up against the remaining A.K.A.s running the show over at B.T. Global Marketing and the lingering threat of the creatures of the Unseen that are hot on their heels.

Warning: Spoilers for issue #5 below!

The dots just keep on connecting as the Killjoys close in on the final showdown! We’ve finally learned that the so-called “guardian angel” babbling what initially seemed like nonsense (though clearly it wasn’t) on the radio waves was actually a resident at a place called Granite State Psychiatric. Unfortunately, B.T. Global Marketing managed to track him down down and the ruthless Scarecrow took him out.

The death of the D.J. and the peculiar collection of daisy artwork in his room led me to do some further digging through the previous issues. In issue #1, Mike makes mention of three things when he’s explaining Mom and Dad’s recruitment process — Daisy, X-Ray, Ladybug. A sequence of images of these three things is then shown at the end of the issue when Mike kills the “tv repairman” before he can take his memories again. In issue #3 when Maxwell is vomiting the mind control out of his system, a ladybug appears on the first page. Then, when the Witch rifles through Mike’s memories in issue #4, the psychedelic artwork is littered with daisies aplenty.

Meanwhile, as we near the end it’s also worth mentioning that we’ve been given various hints about the Killjoys’ powers in relation to their codenames. For example, Mike Milligram is bulletproof and Animax is an animal with his mask on. Jaime now becomes a Monster with his green gloves, and the 100% in Kara’s name likely ties into her power levels. In this current issue, we finally got a glimpse at Sofia’s powers, which are apparently tied to Maria. Based on the stunt she pilled on the bridge into New York City, I’m willing to hedge a bet that the names Red and Blue are a play on the concept of anaglyph 3D.

Now, back to Maria. There was a brutal reveal in the final moments of issue #5 — Maria is alive (and she’s been lurking in the scenes at the B.T. Global Marketing office in New York City all along)! We received some sprinkled hints about this beforehand, such as when Sofia was perplexed to see her company’s system recognized her face as her dead twin’s, and later when she was able to tap into their joint powers to cross the bridge. Based on Maria’s conversation with Dennis, “I’m not sure if this [the wig] is on right, are we playing dress up?” B.T. Global Marketing seems to have her under their mind control as well. The panel where Mike falls to his knees in shock as Maria steps out of the building is now one of my favorites from this entire series. Dennis then drops a final bomb as the issue closes, reminding Mike, “You asked for this.”

Though the artwork throughout the series has been a consistent visual treat, artist Leonardo Romero and colorist Jordie Bellaire always have a few standout panels in each issue that take things to the next level. In issue #5 it was undoubtedly the bridge scene, in which they depicted Sofia and Maria’s wild powers at work.

I’ve found that one of the most exciting parts about reading this series is combing through the previous issues each month to find connections that I initially overlooked, especially with #5 in particular. Way and Simon have crafted multiple fascinating levels into this story, and there’s no telling what plot twists still await in the final issue that will close out National Anthem.

The sixth and final issue of The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: National Anthem will arrive on shelves on March 10. Check out our reviews of the previous issues in this series here.

Mike Shinoda Produces 11th Track “These Dreams” by Jordin Laine Live on Twitch!

0

Starting off the fifth week of production live streams, Mike Shinoda began production on a brand new track titled “These Dreams” by artist Jordin Laine. Shinoda began working on Laine’s song on Monday, February 8, finishing it, as well as the previous track “In Defiance” by Matt Heafy, on Tuesday, February 9.

Shinoda began the production session by listening to Laine’s original piano and vocal tracks. Having discussed her submission with Shinoda beforehand, Laine ended up submitting Midi piano, a main vocal track, and a few other vocal tracks to provide harmonies.

“I love Ani DiFranco … To me, she’s like a songwriter’s songwriter … very lyrical and it’s poetry to music. It’s all about the storytelling, and the chords and the production and even the notes themselves are all in service of the idea she wants to get across … This type of a song [Laine’s] reminds me of that type of a song.  This to me has that storytelling element and approach and there’s something about the style of the song that feels like that to me, in a good way.”

Trying to figure out how to develop Laine’s track, Shinoda started with experimenting with different styles of drums, as well as tambourine. Shinoda then tried various plug-ins and effects, including delay and reverb. About an hour through the livestream, Shinoda was still struggling a little to find the right sound for the song and debated whether or not to step away from Laine’s original piano and take the song in a more synthesizer-like direction. Trying to imagine what this would sound like, he created a few synth chords and played them with Laine’s vocals, which Shinoda decided fit fairly well together, especially in the chorus. He then added a few more things, including dominoes and other synthesized sounds.

Jordin Laine is a singer and songwriter from Canada with a strong love for acoustic music.  She is currently married to a fellow musician and producer, who goes by the name of Eklo, and in addition to singing, she can also play both the piano and the guitar. Laine started a YouTube channel about two years ago, where she posts mainly cover videos, but also vlogs and original music. She has covered popular songs such as “Yellow” by Coldplay and “The Funeral” by Band of Horses, both on YouTube and live on her Twitch channel.  She is currently a Twitch Partner and streams live on Twitch regularly, performing song requests from fans, with Eklo and their son occasionally guest starring. Laine released her first EP, Shivers, in 2019 and has recently come out with two new singles, “The Light Inside” and “Beside the Tide,” last year, which can be found on Spotify and Apple Music.

If you weren’t able to see Jordin Laine’s “These Dreams” be produced live by Mike Shinoda, you can still watch the Twitch replay below! Make sure to check out Laine’s music, as well as Shinoda’s previous production sessions. Stay tuned to Shinoda’s Twitch channel weekdays around 10 a.m. PT, as he will be starting on a new song called “Space Boots and Jet Fuel” by artist Dusty the Stampede on Wednesday, February 10!

‘The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: National Anthem’ #5 by Gerard Way and Shaun Simon Now Available!

0

The fifth issue of the six-part comic miniseries The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: National Anthem from Dark Horse Comics is now available!

The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: National Anthem is written by Gerard Way and Shaun Simon, with art by Leonardo Romero, lettering by Nate Piekos, and coloring by Jordie Bellaire. This comic series follows the story of Mike Milligram and the Killjoys, who used to be teenage exterminators on a mission to save reality. After temporarily losing their memories, the gang gets back together years later in a final showdown against an evil pharmaceutical corporation, their monstrous hitman, and savage gang rivals.

In issue #4, the Killjoys visited the Witch and managed to save Kara. Mike and Jaime also finally learned that they’re father and son in the process. The group was later ambushed (but certainly not defeated) at a mall by a motley crew of surviving A.K.A.s, who just so happen to be those corporate jerks over at B.T. Global.

The summary for issue #5 is as follows:

“As Mike Milligram races towards New York City with the re-assembled Killjoys crew, our band of reality-saving exterminators must fight their way through a deranged corporate hitman known as the Scarecrow, and blast through a giant highway barricade or die trying.”

In addition to Romero’s cover, there are also two variant covers available for issue #5. The covers, pictured below, feature artwork by Becky Cloonan (the artist for the 2013 version of The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys) and Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo.

Visit your local comic shop today to pick up your copy of The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: National Anthem #5.

The sixth and final issue of The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: National Anthem will hit shelves on March 10. Make sure to check out our reviews for each issue in this limited series here.
