Oscar-winner Sebastián Lelio will direct Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones in Voyagers, which follows the romantic story between astronomer and Contact author Carl Sagan and documentary director and producer Ann Druyan, per Variety.

Voyagers is produced by Druyan herself, along with Ben Browning for FilmNation Entertainment and Lynda Obst.

Voyagers takes off in 1977 as NASA prepares to launch the first interstellar probes, and a team led by Sagan sets off to create a message, known as the Golden Record, to accompany the probes. The Golden Record included images and music and was hoped to establish contact with possible alien civilizations encountered.

What starts as a mission with time ticking quickly turns into a love story between Sagan and Druyan.

Lelio and Jessica Goldberg wrote the original screenplay based on interviews with Druyan and others who worked on the Golden Record.
