Hello … you.

The mid-season finale left us with the revelation of the identity of Joe Goldberg’s first-ever stalker — Rhys Montrose who has now announced his candidacy as Mayor of London. Adamant he needs to focus his attention on his own stalker, Joe refuses Kate’s offer to continue pursuing their relationship, though as we know swearing off love seldom works for Joe.

Surprise, surprise — Joe Goldberg is back to wearing a baseball cap and stalking, this time donning the “disguise” to attend a public speech held by Rhys as part of his mayoral campaign. Rhys is certain the Eat the Rich Killer will be caught by the police and reassures his audience of the fact while Joe continues disdain-filled internal monologues. Rhys hardly pays Joe a glance as he walks past him, though someone else has their attention on Joe in the crowd — a woman recording on her phone.

Resolute that he will find evidence of Rhys’ guilt himself, Joe begins what he arguably does best — research. He finds the man’s address, but remarks it will be even more difficult to break into than Henderson’s house was in season 2.

Kate is tasked with cleaning out Malcolm’s office at the university while Roald stands at her side once again, though he soon reveals he is leaving to take a several month long holiday — extending an invitation for her to join. Kate isn’t easy to scare and refuses to run and hide.

Adam is broke and needs to figure out a way to climb out of the hole of debt he finds himself in. His associate Steve, a diamond expert, offers Adam a simple solution — to propose to Phoebe. He will provide a diamond worth more than Adam’s car collection, and if she says yes then his problems will be solved. If she says no, however, the associate gets to take the diamond back … as well as the car collection. The two shake on the bet as Phoebe enters, who immediately expresses distrust over whatever was transpiring.

Reeling from losing multiple friends, Vic, and her family estate, Phoebe’s mental state seems to be incredibly fragile and it’s revealed she hasn’t been sleeping due to feeling like someone is watching her. Adam insists she move in with him while she’s feeling this way.

Joe continues his research into Rhys, listening to any interview he can get his hands on for any mention of a way he can get the man alone. Nadia interrupts his research and innocently reveals where Rhys takes his morning runs, giving Joe exactly what he needs. He’s beat to the punch, however — when he returns to his flat, Rhys is waiting for him.

Rhys reveals his endgame — that he wants a friend and that he is disappointed when Joe can’t live up to the man he knows he can be. He offers Joe another chance to prove his worth by finding someone to frame for all of the murders. Rhys will take care of the how, Joe just needs to take care of the who — otherwise he will go down for all of it.

At Sundry House, Adam speaks with his new employees pre-event as Joe arrives, one of the new employees being the same woman from before who was recording Joe. Kate expresses her upset that Phoebe invited Joe and gives the man the cold shoulder. Phoebe gives Joe some additional insight into the members of the friend group he’s less familiar with, including the fact that Connie has been drinking a lot and is a suspect due to his lack of alibi.

Another new player enters — Niko Leandros — who is a little too close to Kate for Joe’s comfort. Niko asks Kate for a private showing and charms her by relating to her wanting to not be associated with her father. Joe meets Connie for drinks, seemingly to decide if he’s the right person to frame for the murders.

At the party, Joe needs a moment alone to get Simon’s ear into position, having decided to frame Connie. His plan is made more difficult by Adam insisting that Joe takes care of Phoebe while he finalizes his proposal plans and the arrival of Nadia. Kate chastises Joe for continuing to send her mixed signals.

Joe nearly manages to slip the decomposing ear into Connie’s jacket, but he wakes up before the plan can be completed. Connie reveals their conversation was a wake up call and that he has decided to get sober.

While the waitress that has been paying extra close attention escorts Phoebe upstairs so the police can speak with her, Nadia attempts to get a selfie but is rudely rejected by the waitress. Meanwhile, Niko propositions Kate who agrees to have sex with him the following day at her place. The waitress locks Phoebe into the room and it is ultimately revealed that she is actually a paparazzi who is obsessed with Phoebe to especially dark depths and has been stalking her for years.

Joe and Phoebe convince the woman, Dawn, to let him into the room. In an act of quick-thinking, Joe decides to frame the woman and slips the ear into her bag. After the ear is discovered by the police, Dawn is arrested on the suspicion of multiple murders. While Phoebe declares that Joe is a hero again, Nadia appears to be increasingly suspicious of her professor.

Thinking everything is over, Adam moves ahead with his proposal — though Phoebe sees right through it as an attempt to get her money and fix his financial problems (which she is now aware of). She declares that if Adam truly loves her and wants to marry her he will want to do so after losing everything and fixing his own situation and declines his proposal.

Niko and Kate have their date at her place, though it quickly turns sour when she sees a text on his phone from her father — it was all a ruse to get Kate back into her father’s life, because that’s who he’s working for now rather than his own father. She understandably makes him leave. After Kate catches Joe spying through the window once again she has him over, and the two reconcile and have sex again.

When Joe returns to his own flat, Rhys is waiting for him again with music playing and beers to celebrate their success in framing someone for the murders. Rhys, however, is far from done — this is only the beginning. His ultimate intention all along is revealed — he intends to kill one of the most powerful men in the world, Kate’s father.
