Animated ‘Marvel Zombies’, ‘X-Men 97’ Series Announced for Disney+
Between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the ever-growing list of additions to Disney+, it is a fantastic time to be a Marvel fan. What If…? is a success for Marvel animation and has clearly opened the door for more animated projects from the comic powerhouse in the future in partnership with Disney. On November 12, as part of Disney+ Day, there were a few exciting animated projects announced.
First, the popular 90s cartoon X-Men: The Animated Series is getting a reboot from Disney+ under the name X-Men 97. X-Men 97 will pick up where the beloved 90s cartoon left off. Beau DeMayo (The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf writer) will serve as head writer for this series.
X-Men ’97 will bring back original voice actors, both in reprised roles and new ones, Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Alison Sealy-Smith, Chris Potter, Catherine Disher, Adrian Hough, and Christopher Britton. New cast members include Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett, and AJ LoCascio.
Marvel Zombies will also be biting their way onto screens with What If…?‘s Bryan Andrews set to direct. Zombies were introduced to Marvel with a limited comic series written by Robert Kirkman with art by Sean Phillips in late 2005. It is currently unclear if the series will be a continuation of the What If…? zombie episode or a separate series entirely.
Along with What If…?, I Am Groot, and Spider-Man: Freshman Year, these series mark the first wave of Marvel’s venture into animation. What If…? will also receive a second season in the future as the studio enjoys this avenue of storytelling free from the constraints of live-action storytelling.
