The Avett Brothers Perform “Swept Away” from Upcoming ‘Swept Away: A New Musical’
The Avett Brothers debuted their title track from the upcoming musical, Swept Away: A New Musical, which is set to premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theater in Berkeley, California on January 9, 2022. This musical will include the folk rock band’s music, especially songs from their 2004 LP Mignonette.
The cast and crew of the musical include numerous Tony Award winners and nominees, such as stage and screen writer John Logan, director Michael Mayer, choreographer David Neumann, as well as actors such as John Gallagher, Jr., Stark Sands, Wayne Duvall, and Adrian Blake Enscoe. Gallagher, Jr. explained in a special message on the Berkeley Repertory’s YouTube channel that “Swept Away is about family, it’s about hope, it’s about survival, it’s about reckoning, rebirth, and ultimately redemption. So I think it’s gonna be a fitting show to bring to y’all after this time of introspection and hardship.”
This performance features a new reworking of the song that sounds like a mix of the two versions on Mignonette: “Swept Away [Sentimental Version]” that features Scott and Seth’s sister, Bonnie, and the upbeat variation “Swept Away.” You can watch Scott Avett on banjo, Seth Avett on guitar, and Bob Crawford on bass, below.
