If you have ever wondered just how Gaston and LeFou became friends, you may be in luck! The long speculated prequel series to 2017’s Beauty and the Beast has finally gotten the greenlight!

Luke Evans as Gaston and Josh Gad as Lafou will be returning to sing and dance their way into our hearts again. Also joining the series will be newcomer Briana Middleton as LaFou’s stepsister Tilly.

This prequel series will follow Gaston, Lafou, and Tilly as they navigate the kingdom of Beauty and the Beast years before the love story that we know so well takes place. A shocking revelation from Tilly’s past will set this trio off on a unique adventure! While encountering romance, comedy, old friends, and new enemies, mysteries about this kingdom we think we know so well will be revealed.

The eight-episode musical series has been written and developed by Gad, alongside Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz from Once Upon a Time fame. This trio will join forces as co-showrunners and executive producers. The first episode will be directed by the amazing Tony award-nominated director Liesl Tommy.

Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Branded Television, said this in a press release about the upcoming series:

“For anyone who’s ever wondered how a brute like Gaston and a goof like LeFou could have ever become friends and partners, or how a mystical enchantress came to cast that fateful spell on the prince-turned-beast, this series will finally provide those answers … and provoke a whole new set of questions.”

As any Disney fan knows, music is a key part of the Beauty and the Beast legacy. EGOT Award-winning composer Alan Menken is writing the soundtrack of the series! Menken scored both the 1991 animated movie along with the 2017 live action remake. Oscar-nominee Glenn Slater will be joining the team to write lyrics for the first episode. Menken and Tommy are also executive producing with Evans joining.

This exciting new project comes as Disney marks the 30th anniversary of the Beauty and the Beast animated 1991 classic. Production is set to begin in spring 2022. Beauty and the Beast is from Disney Branded Television and ABC Signature.
