The epic and bloody season 2 finale of The Boys arrived on Amazon Prime Video last Friday, closing out yet another diabolical season. It was announced back in July that the show was renewed for a third season, which will begin filming in early 2021.

Today, showrunner Eric Kripke tweeted a photo of the cover of the script for the first episode of season 3, which will be titled “Payback.”

In a literal sense, this title could easily apply to the events that took place in the final episode of season 2, with Homelander hellbent on revenge against the Boys and his fellow teammates in The Seven.

However, fans of the original comic series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson will recognize Payback as the name of the “second most popular superteam.” In the comics, this team is led by Soldier Boy, who is slated to appear in season 3 of the live-action series and will be portrayed by Supernatural star Jensen Ackles. Other members of the team have consisted of Stormfront, Eagle the Archer, Tek Knight, Swatto, Crimson Countess, and Mind-Droid. Whereas The Seven serves as a parody of DC’s Justice League, Payback is akin to Marvel’s Avengers. Kripke stated in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that the show will explore the history of Payback and its members moving into season 3.

A spin-off of the show was also recently announced, which will focus on a Supe college that’s run by Vought.
