He talks to you. He listens to you. He understands you.

Before there were online dating services, there were video dating services. You had to physically go to the company and get the VHS tapes – remember those? In Rent-A-Pal, that is what David (Brian Landis Folkins) has done to find a partner. Through that, he discovers Andy (Wil Wheaton) offering friendship, but at a dangerous cost, and he is desperate to pay it.

The 1990-set horror-thriller will be released by IFC Midnight on September 11 to certain theaters and On-Demand. They are no stranger to the horror genre, with other films IFC Midnight has released including The Wretched, The Other Lamb, Relic, Pledge, and more.

In an interview with Deadline, director Jon Stevenson had this to say about the film:

“It’s an honor to have my directorial debut released on IFC Midnight. Their history of high-quality genre entertainment has directly inspired my work. To now be a part of their rich film library is surreal. I look forward to working with their team in releasing Rent-A-Pal. This movie is near and dear to my heart, and I’m truly excited for the world to see it. And for the world to see a very different side of Wil Wheaton.”

In the trailer, you see David making a film of his own, explaining that he lives with his mother to look after her. When he starts to look at movies, he finds Andy’s. It spirals from there as David seems to get obsessive, and Andy seems to be the cause. As a fan of Wil Wheaton, I cannot wait to see him in this role!

The film is written and directed by Jon Stevenson, featuring a cast including Brian Landis Folkins, Amy Rutledge, Kathleen Brady, Adrian Egolf, Olivia Hendrick, Karin Carr, Sara Woodyard, and more.

Rent-A-Pal will be released to certain theaters and On-Demand September 11, 2020. Check out the trailer below!
