New Trailer for ‘Gretel and Hansel’ Promises Dark Retelling of the Classic Tale
Almost everyone has grown up hearing one version or another of the Grimms’ brothers fairytales, but anyone who reads the original versions knows that nearly every tale had a darker element (or ending) than those created by Disney. Gretel and Hansel invites us to return to those dark, original roots. The newest retelling of the classic tale Hansel and Gretel will explore the darkest elements of the story.
The trailer shows that the retelling takes the tale to a new level of creepy. The old witch in the woods, Holda (played by Alice Krige), is extremely unsettling as she welcomes the abandoned Gretel (Sophia Lillis) and Hansel (Samuel Leakey) into her home. From Holda’s soft but sinister speech to the dark wooded surroundings to Gretel’s suspicions, Gretel and Hansel is sure to be an eerie retelling moviegoers won’t want to miss! Check out the trailer below to see just how sinister and dark the tale will go.
Creepy right? We think so too, and we can’t wait to see it. To tide us over in the meantime, check out the Gretel and Hansel website for a unique Snapchat filter that allows users to explore Holda’s house! Gretel and Hansel arrives in theaters January 31.
