‘Mr. Corman’ Recap: Season 1, Episode 6 “Funeral”

0

Josh is in town for Dax’s funeral where he meets up with a ghost from his past. Read on to find out what happens in this week’s episode of Mr. Corman, “Funeral.”

Rest in Peace, Dax

Josh is attending Dax’s funeral. He spots Megan and they exchange glances. Once the viewing is over, Josh begins getting questioned by Dax’s family about what really happened to him that night. He tells them, of course, but they just want to know more.

Soon it feels like Josh’s whole world comes crashing down (as evident by the asteroid plummeting closer and closer to Earth). Megan interrupts him and they begin catching up on their lives. She invites Josh over with her family to which he politely declines by saying he should check for earlier flights. She tells him there aren’t any.

The Reconnection

Megan says it herself, she believes that the two of them were brought together again for a reason. They’re at the grocery store talking about her parents and her mom’s cat when Megan leans over in full-blown hysterics. Once she’s let out a good cry, a woman approaches and asks if she’s okay and if Josh is bothering her. Megan says yes, he is bothering her, but then begins laughing. But nobody else thinks it’s funny.

Their last stop is the fruit shop. They ask each other about their dating lives, fishing for answers about if they’re single (spoiler alert: they both are.) Megan lets him know that she’s finished her album and she’s planning on touring it soon. Josh congratulates her. She finally feels like she’s found a sound all her own.

The Day It All Unraveled

As they’re chatting, Josh can see the asteroid getting closer and closer to him. He finally decides to tell Megan about his struggles with anxiety. He tells her he’s going to get up and walk it off.

As they pull into Megan’s parents’ driveway she tells him she will drive him to the airport after they unload the groceries. It’s too late, however. Megan’s mom has spotted Josh and invites him to stay. Her dad walks in the room poking fun at his daughter.

“See that’s what I’m talking about. The world’s burning down and we’re all just living our stupid lives.”

Frank

The night creeps in, Josh and Megan are still there. Her mom puts on one of her old songs and Megan isn’t having it. She asks her mom to stop. She doesn’t, so Megan gets up and leaves the room, furious. Her mom is upset because Megan tells her she isn’t supportive enough of her career, but when she tries to be, Megan tells her to stop.

Josh eventually goes into Megan’s room and sits with her as she gently cries. Before long, emotions run high and they both go for a kiss but Megan says no, Dax died and she doesn’t want them to get confused. She can’t go back to him, he never believed in her.

Mr. Corman premieres new episodes every Friday on Apple TV+.

‘The Boys’ Release New Music Video Featuring A-Train

0

The Boys marketing machine has done it again. The Boys series on Amazon has produced several different types of content as season 3 is still in production. This time The Boys‘ creators have released their second music video. Their latest video features the character A-Train in a single called “Faster.” A-Train (Jesse T. Usher) is a superhero called a “Supe” currently in the Seven (The Boys‘ version of the Justice League). His superpower is incredible speed making him the fastest human on earth. A-Train figures prominently in the series for his accidental killing of the girlfriend of The Boys‘ main character, Hughie. Enraged by A-Train’s lack of remorse and Vought’s inability to give A-Train any true consequence, Hughie joins the cause to take down the Seven.

A-Train’s video brought to us by the fake “Voughtify” shows him singing while racing a Vought brand car. A-Train drops razor-tight lyrics with his signature blue glasses. A-Train looks at the camera while singing, “Here comes the A-Train, Mr. Fleet Feet
Savin’ lives, no surprise like it’s easy, there ain’t no day like a race day.” Those viewers who have watched the two seasons know that A-Train has killed several key characters in the series both accidentally and intentionally all the while trying to cover up his addiction to the illicit substance called “V.”

Christopher Lennertz and Math Club produced the single called, and Aimee Proal sings the refrain along with main singer Jesse T. Usher. Lyrics were written by Rebecca Sonnenshine, Jessie T. Usher, Isaac Lucas, Colton Fisher, and Christopher Lennertz.

The video and song serve as a work of art itself separate while satiating fans’ thirst for new content while season 3 keeps filming.

One thing is certain: Regardless of the characters’ powers, the actors are themselves multi-gifted, making them triple threats. Not every show can boast actors like Jesse T. Usher, who can both act, sing, and star in their own characters’ music videos. The Boys bring their A-game.

Review: ‘Some Things I Still Can’t Tell You’ By Misha Collins

0

Turning the proverbial page in his career from his long-time stint on Supernatural, Misha Collins is entering a new era of creativity by revisiting old ones in his debut poetry collection Some Things I Still Can’t Tell You. While Collins has published standalone poems and been featured in literary journals such as California Quarterly and Columbia Poetry Review, this compendium marks his first comprehensive collection of poetry.

To lay all my cards on the table, I’m by no means a poetry buff. In fact, while beautiful, the superfluously flowery language that’s typical of some poetry has often left me feeling bereft — not necessarily due to a lack of understanding of the text, but a lack of emotional connectivity. The style that Collins writes in isn’t overly loquacious, and that’s what I like about it. Its beauty lies in its simplicity; it’s direct, yet accessible.

However, don’t mistake this simplicity for banality. Every poem in the collection is so clearly infused with emotion and layered with meaning. The pieces leave fans with the ability to gain insight into Collins’ life while simultaneously seeing themselves and their own experiences plastered on the page. This collection of poems is a cobbled-together tribute to the every day, a candid look into moments in Collins’ life and the lens that he views it through. It’s an organized hodgepodge of the roller coaster of ups and downs one experiences in life.

Some Things I Still Can’t Tell You is an exploration of the mundane, finding beauty, finding meaning, finding emotion in the smallest of moments. It’s an ode to the human experience as seen through Collins’ niche adventures. Snapshots of his life spill out onto the page as Collins allows the reader to see and feel and sense what he experienced in these moments. And even while reading about these specific events and episodes in his life, the reader is able to imbue the work with their own interpretation by conveying themes common to the human experience, therefore allowing readers to find connections and insight into their own lives.

By the time you’ve finished Some Things I Still Can’t Tell You, you’ll have traversed a myriad of points on the spectrum of human emotion. You’ll have laughed, you’ll have cried. You’ll have sighed longingly and felt the acute heartache that Collins paints a picture of and mirrors through his prose. Joy, sadness, grief, yearning. Reverence, loss, emptiness, disquietude. And wonder. An ever-present sense of marvel at the world around you regardless of the circumstances.

This set of poems, burned onto the page with the ink of a pen, woven, bound, and threaded together by an evocative sense of vulnerability, serves as a reminder to simply stop and be present above all else. A love letter to life, it reminds one to be present enough in your life to truly live it. To let the emotions wash over you, to find the extraordinary in the supremely ordinary. To feel the sun on your skin, and the burn in your legs. To let the grief crack your heart open, and to let that space fill with new highs and lows and triumphs and sorrows. To simply live and appreciate the living.

And while it briefly touches on the deeply unsettling questions that plague humanity like “Why am I here?”, “Where am I going?”, and “What do I have to say?”, the questions that push us to always aspire to be more, it never fails to remind us to bask in the tumultuous chaos of existence — emotional complexities, joyous simplicities, and all.

Misha Collins’ debut poetry collection is one that you truly won’t want to put down. Some Things I Still Can’t Tell You releases on October 12. The book is currently available for purchase/pre-order now on AmazonBarnes and NobleIndie BoundBooks-A-Million, and Bookshop. As always, stay tuned for more updates on Collins’ work.

‘Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings’ Review: A Dazzling Debut for Shang-Chi

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings debuted after pandemic delays, and it was well worth the wait.

Since Avengers: Endgame premiered in April of 2019 there’s been a subtle unease surrounding upcoming Marvel content. With the loss of three of our six core Avengers — and the team as we knew it — there were a lot of questions about the future of the franchise. Could they continue on the same trajectory without Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, the two pillars of the Infinity Saga? Black Widow premiered with mixed reviews, but it didn’t give a good indication of the future, as Natasha’s story had already ended. That burden landed on Shang-Chi’s shoulders. And he carried the weight with ease.

Origin films are always difficult. Trying to find the balance between creating a believable, coherent backstory while not boring viewers is a thin rope to walk. Marvel has typically done a fairly good job with most of their origins, with some being better than others. However, Shang-Chi took origin films to the next level. I’m placing it up with Iron Man and Captain America: The First Avenger. (For reference, those are my two favorite origin films.) When you factor in that Shang-Chi is a fairly obscure character, it only heightens the quality and success of its storytelling. There isn’t as deep of a preexisting connection to Shang-Chi as Thor or Captain America, yet you’ll leave the theater with a newly formed appreciation and respect for him as a character and a hero. Its masterful world and emotion building its finest.

Marvel has had time to perfect its formula. Through the years, they’ve developed a perfect blend of humor, action, and heart, and Shang-Chi highlights this flawless blueprint. From the script to the performances and the visual comedy at the hands of director Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi showcased what Marvel does best. It packed an emotional punch in ways I wasn’t anticipating. It also made me laugh harder than I have at some movies marketed as comedies. The cast of this film was perfectly orchestrated, and I’m beyond thrilled to see our main three players move on within the MCU.

As Marvel became the powerhouse that we know, they’ve started laying deeper into visuals. Not only effects but wide shots and stunning settings to displace us from our world and into their own. Shang-Chi‘s visuals took us to an entirely new level. While we’ve enjoyed seeing the galaxies and beyond in previous films, this transported us to an entirely new one, which proved to be just as beautiful as the rest. Of course, there is a magical element to the film that can’t be overlooked. It was sifted into the narrative perfectly, not overpowering the plot or Shang-Chi himself, but accentuating an already developing hero and making him more on par with his fellow superheroes.

Marvel Studios

Everyone’s performance was phenomenal, but the most enjoyable aspect of this film was feeling the love that each performer had for this project. Their joy and love of this film radiates through their portrayals, making it all the more enjoyable to watch. Simu Liu manifested his destiny with Marvel for this film, and he doesn’t take the opportunity for granted. Awkwafina is an absolutely hilarious powerhouse and likely the most relatable of the characters as the most “normal” of the bunch. She delivers every line with charisma and charm; it’s impossible not to love Katy. Finally, Meng’er Zhang stuns as Xialing, a perfect balance to Awkwafina and Liu, and Tony Leung ties it together with a heart-wrenching take on a very complicated character.

The film doesn’t shy away from complexity. Daddy issues are no rare occurrence in the MCU. However, Shang-Chi adds a new depth compared to the others that have come before it, refreshing the trope and keeping the audience fully engaged. The dynamics are interesting, keeping away from overused storylines (no, Shang-Chi and Katy aren’t romantically involved), and while there are some aspects we’ve seen before, its supporting plot is enough to keep it fresh.

Shang-Chi also brought an entirely new fight choreography to the forefront. Not to say there isn’t heavy-hitting action, because there is, but filtered in is the grace that comes with the Kung Fu style that Shang-Chi’s character utilizes in the comics. It’s no doubt months (at least) of planning and practice were needed to perfect these scenes, and it shows. The care and skill that everyone involved showcases is an absolute highlight of the film.

Jasin Boland/Marvel Studios

As a white woman, I could not possibly comment on the culture and its representation in the film. However, I will say it was far overdue for an Asian-led superhero film. It’s a relief to see Marvel working more diligently towards an inclusive environment for fans around the globe to see themselves represented in these heroes.

Shang-Chi reinvigorated my excitement for the MCU’s cinematic future. I’ll admit my nerves are still buzzing as the Multiverse is introduced to this world I’ve immersed myself in for over a decade. But Shang-Chi was exactly the spark needed to prove that even without some of our originals, Marvel is here to stay. I’ll be surprised if this film doesn’t rank in everyone’s top 10.
