‘Roswell, New Mexico’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 8 “Free Your Mind”

Roswell, New Mexico continues to deliver heart pumping drama and mystery every week, and “Free Your Mind” was no exception to this exquisite third season! Let’s break down what we learned.

Liz Unlocks the Science of Sound Frequency

John Golden Britt/The CW

Liz’s journey this episode is primarily spent taking care of Maria as the Jones infection spreads through her body. Alex smartly gets Maria “transferred by the military,” aka they take Maria to a barn where Liz can monitor her vitals and attempt to treat her. Liz tries to mutate the serum she created while simultaneously keeping Maria stable and alive so Maria and potentially Isobel and Rosa don’t die. No pressure, right?

After Liz has quite the personal revelation out loud she has a breakthrough that Rosa’s truth about everything having signature vibrations is the key. Liz can use sound to affect Jones’ cell vibration and separate him from Maria. Rosa rejoins Liz and they uncover the correct frequency to sever Jones’ hold on Maria.

Jones is a Math Nerd

The CW

We finally discover why Jones has put Maria in a coma and is wreaking havoc on her memory. He’s after a very specific equation on a piece of alien glass that Maria’s grandmother, Patricia, saw in 1969. In a clever move by Jones, he takes a step back and allows Maria, Isobel, and Rosa to go on the journey “alone.” He reappears after they’ve uncovered the math symbol he so desperately wants.

Jones reveals there were many Maxs, many clones back on their planet. It was the key to his supposed immortality, he used science to jump into other clones’ bodies. The triad (Nora, Louise, and Theo) killed every last one except Max who was made a little different. We don’t learn exactly how Max is different yet. Our hopes? That one key difference will come in handy for Liz in the coming episodes.

Maria, Isobel, and Rosa Go on a Memory Quest

John Golden Britt/The CW

As mentioned above, Maria is forced to relive Patricia’s memory of that day in 1969 if she, Isobel, and Rosa are to uncover what Jones is after. Throughout the day, Maria has to face some hard truths including the realization that Patricia was fighting Caulfield from the inside. She “helped” with the experiments by administering them, but she swapped out the serums for placebos. Patricia meets with Nora who has been helping Patricia create the Lockhart machine. The final piece comes from the third in Nora and Louise’s triad, Theo, the scientist Jones forced to make clones. They discover Theo is dead, but Maria charges up the glass using the symbol on Theo’s forehead. Naturally, this is when Jones makes his reappearance to claim said glass.

What follows is Maria finishing the mission with Patricia installing the glass into the Lockhart machine but getting caught for her actions with the placebo swap by none other than Dr. Lockhart. Meanwhile, we get to watch Isobel kick Jones’ ass inside the mind palace to protect Maria and the glass. This buys enough time for Liz’s vibrational science to separate Maria and Jones, waking her and Isobel at long last.

A Grand Gesture

John Golden Britt/The CW

Is it even Roswell if there isn’t a little drama between Alex and Michael? The episode starts with these two finally starting to communicate again. Alex shares he joined Deep Sky, oh and that he joined it for Michael. He wants to build a world where Michael (and they as a couple) don’t have to live in fear. Michael airs out his annoyance that Alex lied to him about Kyle, but with all that out in the open, the duo set aside everything to go after Jones. Alex puts his tactical mind to the mission, and they track Jones as far as a national park where Alex casually writes a program to search for Max’s license plate using game camera footage. Because that’s so easy to do from the back of a pickup truck. Alex also shares a failed mission from his time in Iraq. A small child was killed for befriending him, and Alex let his emotions drive his actions during a mission. His emotion-based actions caused the enemy to scatter and through tears, he explains this to Michael.

“You are the one piece that I cannot go through life without.” – Alex Manes

The duo find Jones and steal back the pod with Max in it in a tense few moments. Michael nearly lets his emotions get the better of him, but Alex is there to rein him in thankfully. Instead, they take the pod from a meditating Jones (who is busy fighting Isobel in Maria’s mind). Naturally, he wakes just as they are leaving. We can’t have this going too smoothly now, can we?

They do make a getaway and with Maria’s memory revealing the Lockhart machine, Alex comes clean with Michael. He tells him about the machine at Deep Sky and hopes to get Ramos’ approval for Michael to work on it, too. Michael doubts he will get clearance and simply tells Alex, “one mission at a time.” Michael’s current mission? Well, it turns out it’s Operation Reunion. He flat out kisses Alex outside the Wild Pony effectively confirming they are on their way to, if not an outright reunion, at least the beginnings of one.

Jones and Max Are Linked and Not in a Good Way

John Golden Britt/The CW

Jones reveals to Michael (before Alex low key runs him over) that shooting Jones will also injure Max. They may have swapped bodies when Jones healed Max, but their cells are still psychically linked. That’s all we learn before Alex literally backs into Jones’ truck, but this presents a huge problem going forward. How can they stop Jones if killing him means also killing Max?

With everything learned in this episode, Liz can now begin to do what she does best and “save Max Evans.”

Roswell, New Mexico airs Mondays on The CW. Be sure to check out all our coverage including recaps, new images, and synopsis as they drop every week!

‘Locke & Key’: Netflix Releases Season 2 Teaser Trailer

1

The long-awaited season 2 premiere of Locke & Key is a month away and Netflix has released the first footage in the form of a teaser trailer! Locke & Key is based on the popular IDW Comics graphic novel series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez.

In season 1, the Locke siblings along with their mother move into their ancestral home, Keyhouse. They’ve moved into the home following their father’s mysterious death. As they begin to explore the halls of the home, they stumble across magical keys that could be connected to his death. The siblings use the keys to explore their unique powers, but not without awakening a demon hellbent on stealing the keys back.

At the end of the first season, the group believed that they got rid of the demon, Dodge, once and for all. That wasn’t the case, as Dodge was using the identity key to transform back and forth as Gabe. Not only is Dodge still roaming the realm, but it has a friend that is now inhabiting Eden’s body.

Locke & Key stars Darby Stanchfield (Nina Locke), Connor Jessup (Tyler Locke), Emilia Jones (Kinsey Locke), Jackson Robert Scott (Bode Locke), Bill Heck (Rendell Locke), Laysla De Oliveira (Dodge), Coby Bird (Rufus Whedon), and Griffin Gluck (Gabe). Aaron Ashmore (Duncan Locke), Hallea Jones (Eden Hawkins), and Brendan Hines were previously cast as series regulars for the upcoming season.

Locke & Key season 2 premieres on October 22 on Netflix.

‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ Gets Renewed for Season 3 at Disney+

0

It looks like Disney+ is giving High School Musical: The Musical: The Series a “second chance,” as the streamer has officially renewed the series for a third season!

According to Deadline, much like High School Musical 2, season 3 of HSMTMTS will take the Wildcats away from the halls of East High and to a sleepaway camp for the summer, “complete with campfires, summer romances and curfew-less nights.”

With the second season using songs from Beauty and the Beast, season 3 seems like the perfect opportunity for the series to go back to its High School Musical roots by doing the sequel. There’s no word yet on when season 3 will premiere on Disney+, but you can stream both seasons now, as well as stream and download the soundtracks on Apple Music and Spotify.

A Look at Sebastian Stan’s Upcoming Film and Television Roles

Over the years, Sebastian Stan has gone from humble, promising beginnings on shows like Gossip Girl and Kings and in films such as The Covenant and Hot Tub Time Machine, to eventually skyrocketing to fame with his portrayal of James “Bucky” Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (first appearing in Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011).

When he’s not portraying the iconic, beloved Super Soldier, Stan has also picked his way through various film genres. He’s pulled at our heartstrings with the romantic dramas Monday and Endings, Beginnings, and he’s thrown himself into grittier roles in Destroyer and The Devil All the Time. He’s even explored another side of himself entirely in films such as The Last Full Measure, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, I’m Not Here, and the extensive list in between.

So looking to the future, what can audiences look forward to seeing Sebastian Stan in next over the next few years?

A love story, crime caper and cautionary tale rolled into one, the eight-part original limited series explores the intersection of privacy, technology and celebrity, tracing the origins of our current Reality TV Era to a stolen tape seen by millions but meant to have an audience of just two.

Marvel

Stan has portrayed Bucky Barnes in the MCU for over 10 years now, appearing in several films and most recently starring in the Disney+ limited series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and lending his voice to Marvel’s new animated venture What If…?. Although Stan has yet to be confirmed for another Marvel project, he has candidly expressed his interest in continuing to portray Bucky.

Avengers: Endgame dramatically altered the course of the MCU, taking several key players off the board (seemingly for good). While Phase 4 has brought with it newcomers like Shang-Chi and the Eternals, it has also worked to expand the roles of existing characters to shape them into the next leading faces of the MCU. With this trajectory in mind, it would be unprecedented to not see Bucky return (especially after all of his character development in TFATWS), be it in the rumored fourth Captain America film alongside Anthony Mackie or in another series/film entirely (Thunderbolts, anyone?).

Stay tuned for more updates on Sebastian Stan’s upcoming film and television roles!

The Funniest Moments From ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’

In its six-episode run, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier brought with it intense, high-flying action, a heaping dose of shocking and thrilling moments, and more than a few emotional punches to the gut. And with a leading cast that includes the likes of Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, one additional thing was a key ingredient to the show’s success: humor.

Perfectly-timed and well-written comedic remarks to balance out the action and drama have always been a cornerstone of what makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe so great. Leading up to the series, Mackie and Stan had years worth of on and off-screen banter between both themselves and their characters that developed after Captain America: The Winter Soldier. They readily brought this dynamic with them to The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and the creative team behind the series held back no punches when it came to fully leaning into that potential.

Join us now as we take a look back on some of the show’s funniest moments.

“Battlestar? STOP THE CAR!” — Bucky

Still from The Falcon and The Winter Soldier
Marvel Studios

Sam and Bucky weren’t quite eager to take John and Lemar up on their offer to hitch a ride after the battle on top of the transport trucks, though the fact that the airport was 20 miles away may have swayed their decision in the end slightly. Bucky looked less than impressed for the duration of the conversation, but learning that Lemar’s alias was Battlestar finally put him over the edge. He’s a Super Soldier, he can walk. It’s fine. (As seen in “The Star-Spangled Man”)

“Looking strong, John!” — Bucky

Still from The Falcon and The Winter Soldier
Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios

When the Dora Milaje were effortlessly wiping the floor with Walker and Lemar in Riga, Sam remarked to Bucky that they should do something. Unphased, Bucky crossed his arms as he called out to Walker in a show of mock support. (As seen in “The Whole World Is Watching”)

“A sorcerer is a wizard without a hat.” — Sam

After dodging his messages (and receiving a scolding from Dr. Raynor for doing so), Bucky finally sought out Sam when he found out that he had given up the shield. The two quickly returned to form with their trademark bickering, and Sam eventually revealed that he was hunting down the Flag Smashers because he had a feeling they might be a part of the Big Three. What’s the Big Three, you ask? Aliens, androids, and wizards. After initially throwing Sam off by knowing who Gandalf is — Bucky read The Hobbit … in 1937 — Bucky was quick to correct him in saying that Doctor Strange is a sorcerer. But Sam, ever quick on his feet, had a response that left the other man momentarily speechless. (As seen in “The Star-Spangled Man”)

“Why didn’t you use the metal arm?” — Sam
“Well … I don’t always think of it immediately. I’m right-handed.” — Bucky

Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios

Bucky paid Sam a surprise visit in Louisiana, and while the two were talking on the dock, one of the boat’s pipes came loose and steam began pouring out of it. Sam quickly went to fix it and struggled to do so. Bucky took the wrench and showed him how to tighten it properly … forgetting that he could have just accomplished it by hand with his vibranium arm. (As seen in “Truth”)

“Look at you. All stealthy. A little time in Wakanda and you come out White Panther.” — Sam

Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios

When Bucky began to quietly slink through the building to look for the Flag Smashers, Sam began teasing him in his earpiece, referencing his time spent recovering in Wakanda. Bucky, however, took this moment to correct Sam as he said, “It’s actually White Wolf.” (As seen in “The Star-Spangled Man”)

“He’s just going to extort you and do that stupid head tilt thing.” — Sam

Still from The Falcon and The Winter Soldier
Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios

Sam and Bucky weren’t impressed that Zemo was keeping the location of Donya Madani’s funeral a secret as leverage so they wouldn’t turn on him. Furious, Bucky walked up and got in Zemo’s face, aggressively throwing his cup of tea across the room. Sam intervened, warning Bucky of Zemo and his tendencies for extortion and head tilting. Zemo immediately straightened out his posture upon hearing Sam’s comment. (As seen in “The Whole World Is Watching”)

A Super Soldier without a parachute

Marvel Studios

When Torres informed Bucky that hovering 200 feet above the ground was too low for him to use a parachute, Bucky did what any rational-minded Super Soldier would do — he dramatically ripped the sleeve off of his jacket to reveal his arm and jumped from the plane unassisted. After hitting many tree branches along the way, Bucky landed on the forest floor with a loud thud. Sam was quick to pipe up in his earpiece, informing Bucky that Redwing had caught everything on camera. Bucky was not impressed. (As seen in “The Star-Spangled Man”)

“You’re not gonna move your seat up, are you?” — Sam

Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios

After making a narrow escape from the hoards of bounty hunters in the container yard, Zemo pulled up to pick up Sam, Bucky, and Sharon in the sleek, supercharged getaway car that he had just pilfered. Bucky made his way into the front seat without hesitation. As Sam squeezed into the back, he realized that he was finally getting a taste of his own medicine after the seat debacle in Civil War. (As seen in “Power Broker”)

“I always wanted to do that.” — Bucky

Marvel Studios

When Bucky and Sam were fighting the Flag Smashers on top of the transport trucks, Redwing suffered a fatal casualty at the hands of Karli. Despite the fact that he was in the middle of being forcibly restrained by two of the Flag Smashers, Bucky momentarily voiced his jealousy over someone else finally getting to take down his drone nemesis. (As seen in “The Star-Spangled Man”)

Dr. Raynor’s soul-gazing exercise

Marvel Studios

Dr. Raynor wasn’t impressed when Walker told her that he authorized a change in Bucky’s strict therapy schedule, and she insisted on one last mandatory session before he could leave. She also forced Sam to join in. The two failed to take her questions seriously, and so Dr. Raynor had no choice but to move on to … the soul-gazing exercise. Sitting as close as humanly possible within their two separate chairs, Bucky and Sam began to have a staring contest, much to her dismay. “Just blink. Sweet Jesus.” (As seen in “The Star-Spangled Man”)

And finally, a seconds-long scene that came and in went in the blink of an eye and yet still garnered so much viewer support that Marvel Studios had to release the entire unseen cut of it …

Dancing Zemo

Seeing the dangerous, scheming Baron Helmut Zemo let loose on the dance floor at Sharon’s party in “Power Broker” was singlehandedly one of the most entertaining and amusing moments from The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. While he already proved himself to be an intriguingly human villain in Captain America: Civil War, this series fleshed out the colorful side of the Baron’s personality.

However, bathrobes, Turkish Delights, cherry blossom tea, and fabulous coats aside, this unforgettable moment was actually entirely improvised by Daniel Brühl. And once he shared that there was a longer cut of his dance moves, it was only a matter of time until fans pestered Marvel to hand over the goods.

All six episodes of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier are now streaming exclusively on Disney+. Check out all of our extended coverage on the series here.

‘Once Upon a Tide: A Mermaid’s Tale’ Out Now!

0

Disney’s latest middle grade mermaid adventure tale, Once Upon a Tide: A Mermaid’s Tale, is now available everywhere!

From author Stephanie Kate Strohm comes a splashingly fun novel in which mermaid princess (and aspiring ambassador for her kingdom) Lana feels like a fish out of water when she visits her mother on land. When disaster strikes her home, Lana’s skills as an ambassador and desire to protect her people will be put to the test.

“Princess Lana is the youngest ambassador ever to represent her underwater kingdom, Clarion, at the Royal Festival on land. And even though it means trading her mermaid tail for a clumsy pair of legs—and worse, spending a week with her mother, who chose life on land over her children seven years ago—Lana can’t wait to prove her political chops.

But once on shore, nothing goes as planned. The children of visiting dignitaries spread nasty rumors about Lana and her brother eavesdropping on humans’ thoughts just because they can communicate telepathically underwater—never mind that their powers don’t work on land. Lana’s mom is wrapped up in the king of a neighboring kingdom, who turns out to be her new boyfriend. And despite her ambassador status, no one will let Lana near a single important negotiation or meeting. Then an earthquake strikes Clarion, and though Lana’s desperate to rush to the aid of her people, her father insists she stay away indefinitely. As the days on land add up, nothing her parents tell her about the disaster makes sense. Soon Lana uncovers signs that more nefarious forces may be at work—and they could spell war for her people. Can Lana uncover the truth about what happened and protect those she loves before it’s too late?”

From the author of Prince in Disguise, Love a la Mode, The Date to Save, and more, young Disney and adventure fans won’t want to miss this thrilling story. You can order Once Upon a Tide online or pick it up at your local bookstore today!
