Anthony Mackie Reportedly Closes Deal for ‘Captain America 4’
Ever since the end credits began to roll after the action-packed finale of Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, speculation has been running rampant about what’s next for the lead characters of the miniseries. Today, Deadline exclusively revealed that Anthony Mackie has closed a deal to lead what will be Marvel’s fourth Captain America film.
Fans and media sources alike have kept up a constant stream of speculation this year in regards to a fourth Captain America film. While it would be very surprising to not see another solo Captain America entry in a future Phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it has not been officially announced by Marvel Studios yet. Sources behind the news of Mackie’s reported return have not been named, so we can only hope that Marvel has an exciting reveal planned with the official news!
Mackie made his first appearance as Sam Wilson in the MCU in the 2014 film Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He would then go on to reprise his role as the Falcon in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
Following an emotional moment when Steve Rogers handed over the heavy responsibility of his iconic vibranium shield to Sam in Endgame, Mackie went on to lead the 2021 Disney+ series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier alongside Sebastian Stan, who returned as Bucky Barnes. After much deliberation, the end of the series saw Sam finally accept the shield, thus taking on the mantle of the MCU’s next Captain America. Mackie is now the second actor to portray Captain America in the MCU, following Chris Evans’ longstanding tenure as the hero since the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger.
Given that the title card following the finale was updated to read as “Captain America and The Winter Soldier,” fans wondered if that meant Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes had another mission in store in the future. At this time, it’s unclear as to whether Stan will be appearing in the untitled fourth Captain America film, too.
Deadline also reports that the script for the upcoming film will come from The Falcon and The Winter Soldier‘s Malcolm Spellman and series staff writer Dalan Musson.
Stay tuned for more news on what’s still to come in the MCU!
