‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’ Review: A Star Is Born

0

Adapting beloved musicals for the screen is never an easy task, with few movie musicals truly living up to their stage counterparts. This past year has seen the release of a number of adaptations that divided critics and audiences alike, from Netflix’s The Prom to Dear Evan Hansen (which hits theaters next weekend). But Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a standout success, capturing the magic that has made the West End production a long-running hit while distinguishing itself in major ways. It’s a delightful film with a wonderful leading actor making his big screen debut, and it is a worthy adaptation of the original show.

Based on the true story of Jamie Campbell, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie follows the story of Jamie New, a teenager from Sheffield who has one dream: to become a superstar drag queen. Jamie is sure of himself and knows his dreams are too big for his small minded school. With his best friend Pritti by his side, Jamie decides to make prom his personal coming out party where he will reintroduce himself to the world. But will he be able to maintain his sense of self through the firestorm his choice sets off in his community — and his family?

Amazon Prime Video

Part of what made the original stage musical a hit was the stage presence of original star John McCrea (who cameos in the film), and without a strong Jamie the audience isn’t as invested in the story. When Max Harwood first struts as Jamie in the opening number “And You Don’t Even Know It,” his energy is infectious. Jamie is a force of nature who knows he’s a star in the making, daring anyone to tell him no. That sense of freedom doesn’t let up for the next two hours, even when Jamie faces bullies, homophobic teachers, and a disapproving father on his path to becoming the drag queen he needs to be.

Harwood remembers that Jamie is 16 years old even as he moves through the world with confidence and bravado. When he turns to the camera and sings, “And when you’re old, like 32/You’ll all remember Jamie New,” Harwood makes sure Jamie’s youth comes through. While there are several stand-up-and-cheer moments where Jamie tells the world he couldn’t care less what it thinks of him, there are also heart-wrenching scenes where we see how he fears that without his drag life, he isn’t special or interesting on his own. Harwood is a star. As much as the film is about Jamie becoming the drag queen he was always meant to be, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a star-making debut for Harwood.

Amazon Prime Video

Of course, Harwood isn’t the only one giving a fantastic performance. As Pritti, Lauren Patel provides the complementary sweetness to Jamie’s salty personality while still bringing a spunkiness to the character. Richard E. Grant has a blast playing the fabulous Hugo Battersby (also known as Loco Chanelle), Jamie’s mentor as he begins to create his drag persona. But Grant also gets one of the most moving moments with a new song created for the film. “This Was Me” features Hugo telling Jamie what it was like to live through the AIDS epidemic as a gay man and particularly as a drag queen. It contextualizes Jamie’s fight with queer history in a way that the original musical did not, and it’s the rare song addition to a musical adaptation that improves on the source material. Sarah Lancashire is perfect as Jamie’s fiercely protective mother Margaret, who buys Jamie his first pair of heels and supports his dreams from the start. Their relationship is moving and a highlight of the film.

Watching Everybody’s Talking About Jamie isn’t always an easy experience. It doesn’t shy away from depicting the discrimination Jamie faces. But it also makes sure to show the happiness in Jamie’s world. You know that even if he’s dealing with bullies right now, Jamie will eventually surpass them all. As he sings in his opening number, he’s a hit, and they don’t even know it. It is rare to see this kind of queer joy depicted onscreen, from the delight on Jamie’s face when he wears his heels to the large scale musical numbers that represent his wildest daydreams. In many ways, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is predictable. Anyone who has seen Billy Elliot has an idea of the basic tropes and story beats it will hit. But despite its familiarity, it still dazzles from the start. The film has a big beating heart with a lovable hero at its center, and everybody will be talking about this Jamie for a long time to come.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is available in select theaters and Amazon Prime Video. You can watch the trailer below!

Becko’s New Single and Video “Darkest Days” Out Now!

0

Following a wave of new singles this year, trap-metal artist Becko has recently released his newest heavy hit “Darkest Days.” Produced by Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, the song shifts between soft, melodic vocals and powerful screams on top a framework of heavy guitar, electronic synth, and intense 808-drum beats. The track explores the theme of escaping the darkest times of our lives and the journey of self-discovery we make due to our trials by fire, making it the perfect embodiment of the phrase “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

“This track is my best yet,” says Becko. “I’ve put it all out there. All I know of music, life… everything. Mike Shinoda is one of my biggest overall inspirations and helped shape me into the artist I am today.”

“Darkest Days” was featured on Mike Shinoda’s Twitch channel in February as part of his #ShinodaProduceMe series. This collaborative project involved finding promising songs from rising artists on social media, which Shinoda would then produce live on Twitch for fans to see. Becko’s “Darkest Days” was one of the earliest tracks in the series, which would later go on to feature over thirty artists of various genre and background. Later speaking about the collaboration, Mike Shinoda said, “I’ve had a lot of fun producing so many new, upcoming artists on Twitch, and Becko was definitely a standout. I’m excited for the song’s release, and to see what he does in the coming years.”

‘Impeachment: American Crime Story’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 2 “The President’s Kiss”

0

Episode 2 of Impeachment: American Crime Story begins with a shutdown of the federal government during Bill Clinton’s first term. History has unintended consequences. Many have asked, “How did an intern get unprecedented access to the leader of the free world?” The answer is quite simple. As we have seen in current times, work doesn’t go away when things shut down. In this case the White House interns filled in the gap.

This is a crime show and it’s a crime of opportunity. When Monica Lewinsky makes herself available, Bill Clinton’s calls and invitations follow. Perhaps Clinton would never have met Lewinsky in such an intimate setting if hundreds of staffers had been there. This is also a story through an intern’s eyes who also happens to be the producer. By including Paula Jones, this is about a greater pattern with Bill Clinton and the many women who have come forward in the public and tell their stories. The producers of the show make an important point. There was no “vast right-wing conspiracy” as Hillary Clinton claims. No one put Lewinsky in the White House West Wing in Leon Panetta’s office as bait for the President. Fate put her there. Sometimes crime is premeditated and sometimes crime is a matter of opportunity. ACS is claiming that this was a crime of opportunity.

The fateful meeting relationship between Monica Lewinsky and President Clinton begins with a stare in the hallways as the President gets the first glimpse of Lewinsky. He pauses and stares at Lewinsky. Later in the day, as Lewinsky assists Leon Panetta, the Chief of Staff, Bill Clinton sees Monica alone and dropping off paperwork in an adjacent office. It’s there where the real relationship begins. He invites her into a side office where she admits that she has a crush on him. He then says, “It’s really flattering because you are beautiful. You light up the room.” He takes her badge which gives her access to him from the sweater that she is wearing and holds it in his hand and says, “This could be a problem.” An out of breath Lewinsky runs into the condo she shares with her mother, wakes her up, and says, “Mom, the President kissed me.”

Linda Tripp, who in a flash-forward scene a year later, uses the word “moist” twice while complaining about her cubby mate, notices a sad Lewinsky stating that it has been 22 1/2 days since she has heard from her “boyfriend. Tripp reminds her that the tail end of any election which will be held in six days is crazy for any senior staffer. It’s not clear if Tripp knows who is Lewinsky’s boyfriend but she knows it’s a good story and one she can sell and make money.

This show is from Lewinsky’s perspective and it’s amazing to see how she looks back at these events. For example, her girlfriend comes into town and they talk about the relationship. It’s clear the girlfriend knows it’s President Clinton. And what’s more, is that her friend did not go to the Press and write a book. One can only hope to have friends like her. She also rightly tells Lewinsky about her patterns, “You get involved with an unavailable guy and he takes away more than he gives you and you end up in a really bad place. He’s the most unavailable man on the entire planet. Somehow you have outdone yourself.” If there was a tagline for this episode, it would be that.

In the next scene, Linda Tripp takes Monica Lewinsky antiquing. While there Tripp tells Lewinsky, “The highlight of my day is baking a potato in the microwave and eating it in front of the NBC Nightly News. Tripp tells Monica that she worries about her and that she is very maternal. Monica is fooled into thinking she can confide in her.

The Comeback Kid

Through the 1996 Presidential re-election results news coverage, we see Monica Lewinsky waiting for the phone call to come back to the White House. After two weeks Monica realizes that it’s not going to happen. She then tells Linda Tripp the truth. In a flashback to the shutdown, she talks about how the affair happened. Monica says to Tripp it was just shared glances at public events. As the Shutdown happens, Monica shows the side of her thong when she has an opportunity. She admits that there was a calculation on her part but she couldn’t help it. In one scene when she delivers him a pizza, he kisses her and then tells her how she can see him at the White House on the weekends when there is less staff. What’s amazing about this affair is that both Lewinsky and Clinton thought they wouldn’t be seen. But of course, they were. And she is sent to the Pentagon until after the election. Bill Clinton calls her occasionally to ensure she would keep quiet during the re-election. Now she resigns herself that the affair is over and she is going to Portland to get her mind off him.

Linda Tripp then tells a resigned Lewinsky, “You are sitting here in the Pentagon right now because you were a threat.” We both know there are 10 women in that building who have had something with him. They are still there (in the White House). “Do you want to know why? Because he doesn’t care about them.” She then tells Monica to stay in DC because she has a feeling Bill Clinton will call. Sure enough, as soon as Monica gets home, Bill calls. Just like that, Monica Lewinsky becomes the Comeback kid.

Paula Jones and the Media Circus

The circus has interesting characters and so does the media circus surrounding ACS Impeachment. Paula Jones’ lawyers meet with her to discuss strategy for the upcoming Supreme Court in order to argue that Presidents are not immune to lawsuits such as Paula’s. In comes her new girl boss, Susan Carpenter-McMillan (Judith Light) to advocate for more media interviews. In the next scene, “fired from MSNBC again” Ann Coulter, comes waltzing in the lawyers’ room. She is now available to bring in her expertise to the Paula Jones case. Cobie Smulders, who plays Ann Coulter, might win the best doppelgänger in television history. I almost forgot it wasn’t Ann Coulter.

Where is the Crime?

I am thinking we do not have a crime at this point in the story. Where is the crime worthy of the previous seasons that covered famous murders? Ann Coulter states the crux of the crime as she foreshadows the event, “When do we get to the part where he is deposed and he lies?” That in essence is the crime of the series. What makes American Crime Story unique is they take the unsexiest crime, a politician who lies, and they pair it with the story that is the sexiest story in American politics. As Ann Coulter states, “This isn’t about justice. It’s about impeachment.”

The irony of the story ACS wants to tell us is that the true plotting is done by Linda Tripp. I almost spilled my drink as I heard Monica Lewinsky tell Linda Tripp, “Do you want to see the dress?” Again the writers are playing with us. It’s not “the dress” that’s blue and gets admitted into evidence in the Impeachment investigation. It’s an inaugural ball red dress. Linda realizes that Monica is remembering events with precise dates and tells her to look for a pattern with Bill Clinton in order to analyze where her relationship stands. This couldn’t be a more Washington solution to a relationship problem. But just like Washington, that’s the surface reason. The real reason is Linda Tripp is plotting to write down all of the accounts in order to sell these details for a book deal.

Through Linda Tripp’s discovery of the pattern that Bill Clinton sees Lewinsky and then calls for an encounter, Lewinsky goes to the inaugural ball in the red dress. She is invited to a weekly Saturday radio address where ironically The President talks about drug addictions and kids. After the address, and under the watchful eye of the Secret Service, Betty escorts her into an office with Bill Clinton. He talks about the election, admits that he thought about her, and gives her the hat pin and the first edition of Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman. Then Clinton says before they embrace, “I don’t want to get addicted to you and I don’t want you to get addicted to me…we have to be really careful.” It’s too late to be careful. With the characters in Washington, it’s only a matter of time that their affair goes public and we are looking forward to the next few episodes when it does.

‘Mr. Corman’ Recap: Season 1, Episode 8 “Hope You Feel Better”

0

This week’s episode of Mr. Corman thrusts viewers into the present. Read on to find out what happens in Mr. Corman episode 8, “Hope You Feel Better.”

A new reality

As the world shifts because of the pandemic, Josh is now working exclusively from home and is taking the necessary precautions to make sure nobody gets sick in his own home.

Things take a turn when Victor and Josh get in a heated argument about their opposing views on the part they should be playing to eradicate the pandemic. While Josh is living his nightmare, Victor can’t afford to miss a day at work and he thinks at worst he’ll “get sick and then get better.”

While most forms of media are steering away from including talk of Covid-19 into their projects, Mr. Corman embraces it, giving the reality of the situation a worldly view and portraying it in a real sense as it’s been played out over the past two years.

Music heals the soul

While the world is changing around Josh, there’s one thing that remains consistent; his undying love for music. Listening to old records, playing it, it doesn’t matter — it’s the one remaining constant that he will always be able to go back to and love it just the same.

It’s time to do your part

Josh and his mom have a candid conversation about the state of the world. His mom thinks he views everything in a negative light, that everything has taken a turn for the worst. Once she realizes that may be the case, she asks the question on everyone’s mind: what do we do now?

Josh gets an incoming text from Victor who lets him know he’s gotten tested (it was negative) and he’s been wearing a mask. As Josh returns home, he sees people outside with masks on and it’s clear to him that there are people also doing the best that they can.

New episodes of Mr. Corman premiere Friday’s on Apple TV+.

‘You’ Season 3 Gets Bloody in First Trailer Ahead of October 15 Release

0

The long-awaited third season of You will arrive on Netflix October 15, and ahead of the release Netflix has given audiences a full-length trailer. It should come as no surprise that murderous Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is having trouble adjusting to life in the suburbs with his equally-murderous partner, Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti). Check out the official announcement and trailer from Netflix below.

We last saw Joe moving to the suburbs with his newly-wed wife to await the birth of their first child together. The trailer reveals, however, that having someone to love him in return and a child will not cure Joe of his past ways. In the two minute trailer narrated by Joe, we get the sense that suburbia is not heaven for Joe. Married life with a baby is not easy as Joe obsesses over their new neighbor, Natalie.

In addition to the trailer and release date, Netflix also released a synopsis for the third season which reads: “In Season 3, Joe and Love, now married and raising their baby, have moved to the balmy Northern California enclave of Madre Linda, where they’re surrounded by privileged tech entrepreneurs, judgmental mommy bloggers, and Insta-famous biohackers. Joe is committed to his new role as a husband and dad but fears Love’s lethal impulsiveness. And then there’s his heart. Could the woman he’s been searching for all this time live right next door? Breaking out of a cage in a basement is one thing. But the prison of a picture-perfect marriage to a woman who’s wise to your tricks? Well, that’ll prove a much more complicated escape.”
