‘The Shrink Next Door’ Recap: Episode 6 “The Party”

0

Last week, Ike convinced Marty to not only renovate the Hampton house but buy the property next door as well. Marty’s beloved family cherry tree was lost to Ike’s insistence and gaslighting, and now Ike’s plans for Marty’s property, and money, are likely to come to fruition. Now, it’s time for the housewarming party.

Welcome to the Jungle

Apple TV+

Ike’s party goes off without a hitch, and it spared no expense. The safari-themed event featured all of Ike’s friends as they trashed Marty’s property. Marty served as a gracious host, and cook, and drink opener, and clean-up crew. Notably, he was not included as a guest at the party he was supposedly co-running.

In their session following the event, Marty is shocked to hear Ike is already planning another party. He doesn’t want to do that again anytime soon (and introverts everywhere nodded their heads in agreement). However, Ike does what he does best and coerces Marty into thinking it’s something he can fix, he can make Marty a social butterfly, if only he keeps trying.

At the end, Ike gifts Marty a koi fish. While it may seem like the most random thing, it’s clear that Ike’s intentions were to get Marty to build a koi pond on the property.

One Year Later

It’s time for another party a year later, and a bus pulls up to the Hampton house yet again. This time, it’s interesting to note the Herschkopf written on the mailbox. Ike pushes one of his other patients, Miriam, to go chat with Marty as he grills and we learn from Miriam about a few other likely inappropriate relationships Ike is maintaining with his patients. He’s got a few other high-profile names he sees, and Marty had no idea.

One patron is shocked to find out that Ike doesn’t own the home when Marty shows her where the bathroom is. Bonnie listens in on the conversation and seems anything but pleased as Marty dances around just admitting that the home is his and not Ike’s.

Ike isn’t pleased about that either, and he scolds Marty during his session about it. The session that Marty pays for. He’s very adamant that Marty not tell the guests the house is his, but only their’s, if anything.

Five Years Later

It’s a pirate theme this year, and the bus arrives in the Hamptons. Marty is still behind the grill as Ike schmoozes with the guests, this time with a live parrot (probably bought on Marty’s dime.) Marty heads into the house to get more of his famous kebabs and finds Bonnie crying in the kitchen. She doesn’t like who Ike has become, she wants her husband back. But now he’s a socialite with an agenda, not that he always wasn’t, but now he has the means.

Marty awkwardly leaves, still too emotionally stunted to console her despite over a decade of therapy now.

10 Years Later

Apple TV+

You guessed it, another party, but with this one comes a bombshell. This particular party isn’t going over well with guests, and it’s hard to tell if that’s because of the more formal setting, the cooler weather, or possibly Ike himself. Ike finds Marty hiding at the koi pond, and he’s become quite the fish whisperer. But Ike doesn’t love Marty’s lack of enthusiasm. After convincing him to pound back a couple of beers, Ike tells Marty that Miriam is a prankster, and to liven this party up he should go push her into the pool. As always, Marty listens, but Miriam is far less than amused. She’s livid.

Marty follows her as she leaves, soaking wet in her brand new dress, apologizing profusely. But Miriam isn’t mad at Marty, not in the slightest. She’s furious with Ike. She knows that Ike put Marty up to it, and she asks why Marty is still listening to him at all and that she didn’t even want to attend this party at all. She calls Ike an asshole and then she confesses that Ike convinced her to cut her own mother off — just as he’d done with Marty and Phyllis — and that when her mother died she never even got to say goodbye. Clearly, this is a habit for Ike and his patients.

Marty takes Miriam to his guest house since Ike and Bonnie occupy the main house (what the second house is doing is anyone’s guess but it isn’t Marty’s). She details how Ike doesn’t care about her, he never did, despite the fact that she even loved him. But Marty isn’t having it. He gets as emotional as we’ve ever seen him thus far as he details that Ike saved his life, Ike loves him, he’s his best friend, which we all know to be false. Even after all these years, and all that money spent, Marty is still wholly under Ike’s spell. So much so, that when a now platinum blonde Bonnie (I guess she’s gotten used to the new man he husband has become in the past decade) comes in to fetch Ike for karaoke (the man needing a partner got them opening tickets to the New York ballet) Ike sends Marty into town to fetch limes for margaritas.

An Unexpected Run-In

On his stop to get the limes, Marty runs into an old neighbor who thought he’d moved (due to the name change on the mailbox). She asks about Phyllis, to which Marty has no answer, and then tells him about his niece’s new baby which shocks him to the core. He’s finally seeing all he’s missed out on during his years with Ike. The thoughts begin to haunt him, maybe Miriam’s confession about not being able to say goodbye to her mother is finally sinking in. After a few dangerous traffic maneuvers, it seems like Marty might be heading in another direction than back to Ike, but in the end, Marty pulls up back to the house.

After a brief flashback to his childhood, Marty heads straight back to his sanctuary — the koi pond. He sits in the water with his beloved fish, likely the only beings in the world who appreciate him, and Ike finds him. In a rare moment of what appeared to be sincerity, Ike sits in the water with him and asks him to introduce him to all the different koi. Marty does so happily and then tells Ike that he’d like to head back into the city for the night. And of course, Ike has a favor to ask.

No Longer a Nice Guy

Despite Marty having a car, he takes the bus back to the city with all the party guests, sitting next to Miriam for the drive. When the bus engine overheats, Marty asks Miriam to accompany him to the gas station down the road where they can call for help. She heads inside to use the restroom while Marty heads to the payphone (no one had cell reception) but when Miriam gets back outside, Marty is gone. The payphone rings and Miriam answers. It’s Ike, and he’s ending their professional relationship. Marty races back to the bus — which is fully operational — and strands Miriam in the middle of nowhere. No doubt this was Ike’s favor.

Marty has abandoned all morals and values in favor of Ike. So much so that the man who used to buy his employees a birthday cake every single year is now abandoning women in desolate gas station parking lots. This is a horrifying development for Marty, proving his absolute dependency on Ike and that there is no task too outrageous, too cruel, or too farfetched that Marty won’t do for the manipulative man he calls his best friend.

Episodes 1-6 of The Shrink Next Door are available exclusively on Apple TV+. Episode 7 will release Friday, December 10. Be sure to keep up with our continuing coverage of the series!

‘This Game’s Called Murder’ Review: A Zany Thriller From Adam Sherman

0

In This Game’s Called Murder, director/writer/producer Adam Sherman brings viewers on a wild journey with the eccentric Wallendorf family. Mr. Wallendorf (Ron Perlman) is a fashion mogul who makes exactly one type of shoe: red high heels. Mrs. Wallendorf (Natasha Henstridge) is his conniving wife with a few tricks up her sleeve. Their daughter, Jennifer (Vanessa Marano), is a social media pro trying to find her own purpose in life. As they family attempts to maintain their public image, they soon begin to fall apart.

Almost instantly, Sherman sets the stage for what’s to come. The opening scene not only establishes the general tone, but it also gives viewers a sense of how people view the Wallendorfs. It also introduces the movie’s overall aesthetic, which is one of the strongest qualities. The movie’s landscape contains vibrant scenes that contrast nicely with the darker, more muted ones. The use of red in particular is bold and eye-catching. An aurally pleasing soundtrack complements the visuals.

One character who stands out is Jennifer. Of all the characters, she holds the clearest arc. When viewers meet her, they quickly get a sense of the heartache she tries to mask, present through her dialogue. As the movie progresses, her personality continues to unravel. She’s not just a girl trapped in a toxic family. She’s learned to create her own name via social media and adapt to her surroundings (though not in an ideal manner). While the movie follows all three Wallendorfs, Jennifer fills its center.

Marano brings a solid performance as Jennifer. She demonstrates each major facet of the character in a way that fits within the story. However, she ensures Jennifer carries her own singular traits. Her performance also complements Perlman’s and Henstridge’s, completing the dysfunctional Wallendorf triangle.

Cranked Up Films

One other aspect that intrigues me is the red shoes. It’s no secret the Wallendorfs hold influence over society. And Mr. Wallendorf’s decision to sell red high heels plays into that. Eventually, viewers learn some of the real motive behind the shoes. But the way the shoes are lauded made me want to know every single detail about Mr. Wallendorf’s decision to produce them and refuse to deviate from that.

While the movie has its ups, it also has its downs. Despite the enticing aesthetic and solid main cast, it still feels disjointed at times. The Wallendorf threads do connect by the third act. However, they sometimes got a little lost along the way. Additionally, while the secondary characters did serve a purpose, I found that I wasn’t necessarily attached to them. I would’ve liked to learn a little more deeply about some of them. Regardless, This Game’s Called Murder offers a unique story. It’s bizarre nature hooks viewers. Sherman also provides commentary about modern society without bogging down the story. He keeps viewers intrigued enough to stay with the movie until the credits roll.

This Game’s Called Murder is out now in theaters and On Demand. Find tickets and digital watch links here. Stay tuned for our interview with Adam Sherman, Vanessa Marano, and Natasha Henstridge! Watch the trailer below.

Back at DC FanDome, the first look at what’s to come of the long-standing DC character’s story also revealed several new characters. In the full-length trailer, Peacemaker seems at war with himself and his mantra of keeping peace no matter how many men, women, and children have to be killed to make that sacrifice. A new threat also emerges, simply known as the Butterflies.

Peacemaker also stars Economos (Steve Agee), Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji), Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), and Vigilante (Freddie Stroma).

Nerds Gets Cheery: A Lifetime Newbie’s Guide to Watching ‘A Picture Perfect Holiday’

I should preface this by stating that I am, in fact, a Lifetime newbie. I have never seen a single Lifetime movie, and I understand that these films have a very established fan-base; one that is ardent in their love of the Christmas movies in particular. These aren’t things I’ve actively avoided, but somehow Lifetime movies have just slipped beyond my radar. I decided to change that, and with that decision I made the active effort to seek out a Lifetime Christmas movie to christen my eyeballs.

That’s where A Picture Perfect Holiday comes in. I saw it advertised on Instagram and was immediately interested based solely on the cast, growing up loving Tatyana Ali in Fresh Prince, and recently having seen Henderson Wade in The CW’s Walker. A Picture Perfect Holiday premiered on November 13, 2021 on the Lifetime network, and I’m here to showcase my (admittedly somewhat spoilery) thoughts on this film. The good, the bad, and the tropey.

Lifetime

When the film opened, I was genuinely surprised by the quality. I’m not sure how my opinion on Lifetime movies had initially formed, where I assumed they were all filmed with a Vaseline covered camcorder from the 80s, but I was pleasantly proven wrong. And the movie even begins with a shot of Tatyana Ali’s character Gaby shooting some photos of a very attractive shirtless man. Consider my interest piqued.

We learn through clever exposition that Gaby is a freelance fashion photographer for Style Source magazine, and her main motivation is to become a full-time employee. She even approaches her boss (I assume) Leila, asking how she can earn the position, to which Leila responds that Gaby needs to work on adding “warmth” to her photographs. The only logical way to do so would be to send Gaby on a Christmas themed photography retreat in the rocky mountains, naturally.

With my limited knowledge of Lifetime movies, I had always heard that they tend to follow a particular set of cliché plot points, so it wasn’t surprising to learn that Gaby hated Christmas. I assumed she’d go to the retreat and learn to love Christmas through wacky shenanigans with a hot guy (Henderson Wade, specifically), and I was correct.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with clichés, I actually happen to love a lot of the commonly used tropes in these sort of movies. I’m a rom-com fan, so I was expecting to enjoy watching it all transpire even with the predictability. I was also correct about this. Maybe this review is just my excuse to prove how I’m right about everything?

Lifetime

Gaby had to call someone to rent a cabin for the retreat and, of course, there was a mix up that resulted in her solo cabin having been rented by Henderson Wade’s character Sean. We learn this when she arrives at her cabin, only to be greeted by Sean in a towel. Ten minutes in and we’re shown two shirtless men already. I can understand why these movies tend to attract an avid female audience.

Wouldn’t you know it, Sean is also the world’s biggest fan of Christmas. He went as far as going to a five-day retreat with multiple pairs of Christmas themed pajamas, all of which I wish I had in my own wardrobe. So the two leads are off to a rocky start, cementing that “hate to love” dynamic that I personally enjoy in every form of media. I’m easy to please, what can I say?

Tragically, they’re both stuck with no other options for lodging, meaning they have to share the cabin together. And there was only one bed. Sean sticks to the sofa though, ruining any antics that could’ve unfolded over maneuvering this mattress-sized plot device.

Sean and Gaby clash immediately, with his preference for film cameras and her love of digital, not to mention his previously mentioned passion for the holiday season. It further complicates things when they join other photographers doing the retreat, with Sean cementing himself inside Gaby’s group for the entirety of their time there.

Lifetime

The bright side? We meet Dani and Amelia, a queer couple that I immediately wished had a romantic Lifetime movie of their own. They’re just so incredibly cute and distracting that I forgot what I was watching for a minute. They even get their own side-plot of Dani and Amelia each planning to propose to the other, with Sean and Gaby assisting them in finding the perfect way to propose. Tell me that isn’t a perfect opportunity for a movie about Dani and Amelia! It practically writes itself!

I could go on and ruin the entire movie for you, but I think people should experience the story unfolding for the first time by actually giving it a watch. Tatyana Ali and Henderson Wade have amazing chemistry, and watching them fall for each other is absolutely charming as heck. Though the movie is sometimes formulaic and lacks any significant third act conflict, it’s a fun romp through small town Christmas festivities that will warm the hearts of any Christmas lover. You should definitely give it a watch, even if you’re new to Lifetime movies like I am.

Now excuse me as I try to track down a pair of those Santa pajamas.

A Picture Perfect Holiday can be streamed on Amazon, Vudu, Lifetime, and Spectrum.

‘Walker’ Recap: Season 2, Episode 5 “Partners and Third Wheels”

0

After a week off due to Thanksgiving, Walker is back this week with the fifth episode of the second season. Let’s dive in!

The Case of Mac Lippey

Cordell arrives at the station giving out breakfast and Micki gives him the cold shoulder. Captain James explains that he put her on desk duty. He also tells Cordell that he’s started dating, and he asks if Cordell has cleared the air with Geri yet.

Liam arrives at the station to tell them about a body that has turned up for someone that was reported missing years ago, Mac Lippey. Captain James tells Micki she’s running point in the station. Liam and Cordell head to the construction site where the body was found and find out Mac was murdered right around the time he went missing years ago. They spot a woman there come onto the scene and go to stop her, but she runs away and hops on a dirtbike and Cordell chases after her. She gets over a mound of dirt and Cordell loses her.

Liam arrives back at the station and talks to Micki, and the two talk about how infuriating Cordell is to work with. Micki talks to Liam a little bit about how she’s feeling after the undercover sting. Liam tells Micki that a part of him was relieved that he didn’t get DA because he wasn’t sure he could live up to the William Walker he promised to be.

Liam and Micki bring in Mac’s brother to talk to him. He says they had some car trouble and Mac walked to the gas station while he stayed with the car, and then he never saw him again. He says to check into the owners of the construction site, as there was some bad blood between them. While interviewing Mac’s brother, Micki gets a text that forensics has traced the owner of the gun. Liam and Micki arrive at Carter Fassbender’s office, the owner of the construction site, whose gun was reported stolen three years ago. One of the bullets was the one that killed Mac. Carter says that Mac’s brother bailed on a meeting because of car trouble and having his car towed, which raises suspicions to Liam and Micki. They see a girl in the office, who Micki identifies as Mac’s daughter, Willa. Liam says that’s the same girl who evaded Cordell at the crime scene.

Rebecca Brenneman/The CW

Liam and Micki are interrogating her, and she won’t answer at first. She said she didn’t get answers but saw them dig up her father’s body today. She said she didn’t kill her father but she doesn’t have anything else to say. Micki tells Liam that she clearly knows something, and they decide to put a tail on her.

Walker arrives to meet Liam and Micki, saying they had someone follow Willa and she arrived at their location after leaving the station. Cordell wants Micki with him but she’s hesitant saying she’s supposed to be desk duty only. Micki says what if she’s not ready, and Cordell says he’s got her back.

The two enter knock on the door, and then Micki sees a gun through the window. Cordell breaks the door down to find Mac’s brother, Remi, tied up, and Willa holding a gun to him. Willa puts the gun down, saying she’s holding the gun he stole to kill Mac. Willa gets Remi to confess to Mac’s murder. Willa picks up the gun again, and Micki uses her story with Garrison to try and talk her down. She puts the gun down again, dropping it, and Micki runs over to grab her.

Liam and Cordell walk away from the house where Liam says Remi’s car was towed from the construction site, putting him at the crime scene. It makes the case solid. Cordell and Liam say they need to work through their issues and need to stop fighting. Liam says he’ll try being civil to the Davidsons, and they both hug it out.

At the station, Cordell and Micki talk, with Cordell apologizing, saying he wanted her out in the field right away and he didn’t realize the way she came back home was different than when he did. Micki’s emotional as he apologizes, and she said with Willa she started to understand what she has been feeling since Del Rio and Garrison. The two talk about the job and how it changes you, but that when you do, you can only hope it changes for the better. Micki says Cordell is not the only one who deserves to know how she’s been feeling, alluding to Trey.

Fishing Trip

At the Ranch, Abeline, Bonham, Stella, and Augie take a look at the map that was found in the last episode. Stella and Augie promise to do some chores around the house while Bonham and Abeline go fishing, but the kids are also planning to secretly have some friends over.

Trey wakes up to an empty bedside and sees a note on his nightstand that she’ll be home for lunch. Trey arrives at the ranch to see Bonham and Abeline with lunch, saying that he cooked for Micki who was supposed to arrive but he didn’t. Bonham invites Trey on the fishing trip, and he goes with him.

The three arrive at a beautiful lake, attached to a home and property for sale. Bonham tells Abeline that he thought about what she said before (potentially leaving the ranch) and that he’s thinking about it. Trey talks to them about maybe Augie and Stella taking over the ranch one day.

Trey, Bonham, and Abeline end their fishing trip with a bunch of fish. Trey talks to Bonham about Micki, and their relationship. Bonham says Micki will sort out her feelings for Garrison, and Trey asks who Garrison was. Bonham backtracks, saying he may have gotten the stories crossed, leaving Trey more confused.

The Party and the Barn

Stella and Augie invite a lot of people over to the ranch, and there’s a whole party going on. Some girls ask Stella about what’s going on with her and Todd, and she said they’re just hanging out. They talk about the Davidsons’ barn, and Stella asks Todd to take a walk with her to the barn. Some other friends tell Augie that anyone who steps foot in the barn has bad luck, so he heads over to follow Stella.

Stella and Todd are talking on the walk, and Todd says he’s been hoping to spend more time with her. They hear something and run to the barn to see Augie climbing the barn. Augie falls through the roof of the barn and he ends up finding a lantern with the Walker brand on it.

Back at the ranch, Trey, Bonham, and Abeline arrive back home to see the party. Stella and Augie are caught red-handed, and Bonham says he doesn’t feel proud about what they decided to do to this ranch. Abeline says no matter what, this will always be their home, it’s where they grew up. Bonham takes the horseshoe out of Augie’s hand, and Bonham says they’re going to beat them at the game, but that they still are in trouble.

Augie seems to have hurt his shoulder as they get ready to play horseshoes, probably from the fall at the barn.

The Side Step

At the Side Step, Captain James is there with his date, Jillian, and Geri arrives with a date. Cordell plays pool with Cap and sees Geri seem upset. Cordell goes over to them, and Geri tells Cordell her date is Drew and they met at a grief group. Geri says it’s put a lot into perspective for her. Geri says when she saw him and Denise last week it made her mad. Cordell tries explaining it wasn’t real, but she doesn’t believe him. Geri says that sometimes she still thinks Hoyt is locked up and will walk through the doors one day. Drew comes back and sees Cordell holding Geri’s hands as they talk and says his hands are on his date.

Rebecca Brenneman/The CW

Cordell and Captain James get into a small argument because Cordell saw a Mustang keychain in Jillian’s purse and Cap didn’t know. As they’re talking, Cordell answers a call and steps away.

After the case with Willa, Mac, and Remi, Cordell arrives back at the Side Step to find Captain James and that Jillian has left. Cap says he was right and that Jillian wasn’t ready to move on from her ex. Geri is behind the bar, and Cordell goes to speak to her but she says tonight’s not the night. Geri pours a drink and tells Cordell it’s from a lady across the bar, and Cordell goes to thank her.

Who is Garrison?

Micki arrives home and sees the painting, with a sticky note on it that says “Who is Garrison?” as she looks towards the closed bedroom door.

Walker has one more episode airing on December 9 before the holiday break. Walker will return on January 27 with episode seven.
