‘A Discovery of Witches’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 2

In this week’s episode of A Discovery of Witches, Matthew and Diana are shocked when they’re reunited with Jack. Father Hubbard had stayed true to his word, protecting him, which went so far as turning him into a vampire when he was dying from the plague. However, they soon discovering disturbing secrets about Jack. Meanwhile, the search for the cure for blood rage continues.

Jack is back where he belongs

We open on the vampire Father Hubbard, who still oversees London in the current day. He calls out, “I told you to never come back,” as Benjamin approaches him. The other man smirks, and Hubbard tells him, “He’s not here, I haven’t seen him for months.”

Hubbard’s promise to Diana from hundreds of years ago clearly still holds strong, because finds her and Matthew in a parking garage and blocks their path. He tells them that they left something in his keeping, and out of the car steps Jack, back where he belongs. He’s slightly older than the young boy that the couple first rescued in the 1590s.

They bring Jack back to Fernando’s, and we learned that Father Hubbard had to turn him because he had caught the plague. Through this conversation, Matthew finally learns that Diana gave Hubbard a drop of her blood in exchange for protecting Jack, which allowed him to learn some of her secrets. Matthew isn’t pleased, even when Diana assures him that she used her magic to prevent him from learning too much.

Satu the weaver

Peter Knox tells Satu about Edward Kelley’s letter, which says there are missing pages from the Book of Life. Three of them. Knox proposes that they try to find the pages together, but Satu has no interest in working with him any longer. He can’t control her anymore, she’s a weaver. Peter realizes that perhaps the prophecy was about her, not Diana … “Beware the witch with the blood of lion and the wolf, for with it she will destroy the children of the night.”

Finding the cure

Finding the cure for blood rage with a team of two is just too much work for Miriam and Chris, and they share as much with Matthew. And the issue isn’t just that they’re understaffed, they also don’t have enough DNA from the de Clermont bloodline. Right now, they only have samples from Matthew, Ysabeau, and Marcus. Miriam suggests that Marcus should go to New Orleans, which is where his vampire children are. Chris tries to explain to Matthew that if he wants them to do this, he’s going to need to let his students assist in the research. But after what happened to Philippe, Matthew is far too distrusting of the idea of humans studying vampires.

Later, after everything with Jack, Matthew decides that he has to do something before leaving for New Orleans. He agrees to let Chris involve his students in the project, and he stands up in front of them all in the lab and reveals that he and Miriam are vampires. And Diana is a witch.

Baldwin discovers Jack

Baldwin arrives at Fernando’s to speak with Matthew and Diana, and he finds Gallowglass and Jack in the garage. He coldly tells Jack to leave, calling him one of Hubbard’s strays and remarking, “It’s family only in this house.” This brings Jack’s blood rage boiling to the surface, and he attacks Baldwin viciously.

Matthew hears the scuffle, and he and Diana rush downstairs to find Baldwin furiously holding Jack down. He bites him, and by drinking his blood he can see Jack’s memories of Matthew and Diana in the 1590s, but he also sees something much more disturbing: the bodies of those that Jack has killed. He is the blood-raged killer.

Baldwin wants to kill Jack, and Diana snaps. Using her powers, she wraps a chain around Baldwin’s neck and tells him to take his hands off of her son. Matthew, however, falls to Baldwin’s feet as he promises his brother that he had no knowledge of Jack’s blood rage. Baldwin orders Matthew to kill Jack, but the boy runs off.

The truth about Jack, Hubbard, and Benjamin

Matthew and Diana confront Hubbard about Jack’s blood rage, and he tells them that Jack begged him not to tell them. After all, as long as he’s kept safe and happy, it’s not an issue. Matthew is confused how Hubbard is a carrier for blood rage in the first place, at which point the other man reveals that Benjamin is his sire. He had resurrected him from the brink of death with hopes that he would infect him with blood rage. He wanted him to stand with him against the de Clermonts and their allies.

Hubbard explains that Benjamin’s surprise visit the other day is why he brought Jack to them. When Hubbard sired Jack, he was still young, malleable, and infected with blood rage. Benjamin took advantage of that and taught him how to hunt and kill for pleasure, convincing him that he needed to prove he was really of Matthew de Clermont’s blood. Even though Jack promised Hubbard he wouldn’t kill, it became an addiction for him, and Matthew and Diana are his last hope.

Matthew and Diana are at odds as they discuss what to do about Jack. Diana can’t fathom killing him; he’s their son. Matthew wants to end his suffering and give him peace. Sarah reminds him that they’re currently looking for a cure for blood rage, but Matthew is worried about what will happen to Jack if the Congregation, Baldwin, or Benjamin get to him first. And the thought of disobeying the head of his family in order to save Jack is something Matthew cannot fathom.

Matthew makes a decision

Matthew eventually finds Jack, who reveals to him that it was him who stole the miniature paintings after all. He may have had to kill a man to get them, but it was all he could find of Matthew and Diana. Jack lowers himself to the ground as he tells Matthew that he didn’t want to live anymore when he realized that he couldn’t control himself, but Philippe told him to wait, because Matthew would be the one to teach him to ignore the blood rage. Matthew is surprised to hear this.

As Jack sits on the ground in front of Matthew, defeated, he tells him that he won’t fight him. Something shifts, and Matthew changes his mind. They both return to the house the next morning, and Diana comes running from the front steps, relieved.

Gallowglass has a secret

Jack asks Fernando about how he helped Matthew learn to control the blood rage. When they’re finished chatting, Gallowglass pipes up and reminds Jack that he also has Diana, she would do anything for him.

After the boy is gone, Fernando rounds on Gallowglass and says, “Don’t let Matthew know.” Gallowglass acts clueless, and he continues, “Your feelings for Diana, you can’t hide them from me.” We learn that after Matthew and Diana timewalked back to the current day, Philippe charged Gallowglass with looking after Diana. The vampire has spent Diana’s entire life keeping her safe. Fernando reminds him that Diana is with Matthew now, and one day he will have to walk away from her … but not today.

Off to New Orleans

Matthew, Marcus, and Jack head to the airport to take a trip to New Orleans. It’s bound to be difficult, because only five out the 20 children that Marcus has sired are still alive. Matthew had to kill the others by order of the Congregation, because they were all infected with blood rage. The cull was necessary to prevent them from exposing vampires to humans, but it’s a touchy subject nonetheless. None of them will be happy to see Marcus with Matthew.

Matthew gets a phone call from Benjamin — who is now in league with Gerbert — while they’re waiting, and he tells him to check his email. He sends him a video of him and Jack, in which they have two people tied up in the back seat of a car. Benjamin tries to manipulate Jack, saying that he’s going to show Matthew that he’s worthy of his love and respect, but Jack doesn’t want to. Benjamin gets him riled up anyway and exits the car as Jack’s blood rage takes over.

Calmly, Matthew asks Benjamin what he wants, and he tells him that he wants the whole family together … him, Matthew, Jack, and Diana.

‘Nancy Drew’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 11 “The Spellbound Juror”

Well Nace fans, it’s finally out in the open. After the slowest of slow burns, one half of the Nancy/Ace pairing has shared their feelings! But how is that love confession received? And how does it fit in to Temperance’s scheming? Find out what happened in “The Spellbound Juror”!

Be Careful of Stones That You Throw

Colin Bentley/The CW

Nick has jury duty, and it just so happens to be a case where Carson will be facing off against Jean. They talk dirty with legal jargon before heading out to try the case. Carson loses the alibi he needs, so he calls George. His client Peter Tombar has a friend named Felix Raybolt who works in the kitchen at a nearby restaurant. George says she knows him and will track Felix down to provide the alibi.

As Nick gets escorted into the jury room, he finds that one of the potential jurors dropped a drawing of Gettysburg — it must be the next victim. He frantically tries to figure out who it is, realizing his only option is to get on the jury.

George finds Felix, who doesn’t want to talk. It turns out the reason Felix knows Peter is because Peter gets leftovers from the restaurant to survive. It’s against the restaurant rules, and if word gets out that Felix has been helping Peter (and others), it could jeopardize the makeshift food pantry. Since George has been in that position, she agrees to find another way to get Peter an alibi.

As Jean and Carson build their case to the jury, the judge calls them out for dating under the radar. He sequesters the jury to keep them from being influenced (the outcome Bess, who leaked the story, was looking for in order to help Nick.) George arrives to talk to Carson and Peter, and George lets them know she’s looking for alternate evidence. George realizes the security guard accusing Peter was wearing sunglasses and couldn’t have seen Peter coming — he also wears prescription glasses, and he can’t see without them.

The next day, Nick is trying to convince the jury that Peter is innocent. He references his own story and his belief in second chances, with Tunji Kasim giving a heartbreaking performance. They take another vote, and Peter is declared not guilty. George realizes she likes Carson’s job, and Carson suggests she could be a great lawyer. Jean arrives and lets Carson know that the victim woke up from his coma and confirmed Peter wasn’t his attacker. They make up as they decide to spend the weekend together.

I Will Possess Your Heart

Colin Bentley/The CW

Nancy talks to one of the servers from Jake’s restaurant, who reveals that Jake was acting erratically before he died, exhibiting the same behavior that Matthew Burke did. Ryan calls to tell her there’s a lot of Hudson heirlooms about to be up for sale, and Nancy agrees to stop by.

At the sale, Ryan comes across Celia’s jewelry box. As they browse, Ryan shares with Nancy that he has an interview at a consulting firm, which will be his first non-Hudson job. Nancy tells him she’s proud of him as they find a box of artifacts belonging to Charity. There’s a letter inside from Charity to Cora Dow completely disavowing her mother and foreshadowing Temperance’s vengeful plan. Temperance was lying about her grief at losing Charity — Charity was trying to split her soul to keep Temperance from using her to unleash evil. The Copperhead was meant to be an insurance policy in case the barrier made by the Women in White failed.

Nancy goes to Bess and Ace with what she found at the estate sale. Temperance is in New York with Park’s team tailing her, so they have some time to search for the victim. Nick manages to send info about one of the jurors through a secret code. Turns out Daniela has an ancestor who fought in the Civil War and her grandmother died at 101. Nancy has Park run the same numbers “just to double check,” which produces some great Ace jealousy faces. Nancy and Bess realize the doll is how the Copperhead is finding its victims and go around town spreading Daniela’s scent to confuse it.

Nancy and Ace realize that Daniela can’t be the next victim since she is a younger sister, not the oldest, as one of the jurors has an outburst in the courtroom. He had a nightmare that he was in a battlefield, and Nick realizes this is the true victim. Park finds out that this man is Lev Stern, and that he lives off the grid. Back in the courtroom, Lev sobs about “his” love, unable to control his visions. The judge kicks him out, and he runs away. The jury is sequestered in the hotel from “The Legend of the Murder Hotel,” and Bess comes up with an excuse to have Nick moved to the haunted room. The Drew Crew enters (Ace: “Murder room for the win”) to figure out their next move. Nick knows where Lev went.

At a local spa retreat where Lev is hiding out, the crew tells Lev about his supernatural soul situation. Bess has a plan to help as Ace shares with Nancy that both Matthew and Jake died at 11:57 p.m. They have two hours to spread his scent around town. In a stunning sequence that pays homage to Jurassic Park, Nancy is cornered in a restaurant kitchen by the Copperhead (shout out to director Larry Teng — this is the 14th Nancy Drew episode he’s directed.) She escapes by hiding as the Copperhead is distracted by Lev’s smell.

But their plan fails as Lev is lured outside the spa by the Copperhead. They chase Lev down as he creepily hums “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Nick goes after Lev and is blasted by the Copperhead, but Bess uses a protection ritual to break the trance. It’s 11:58 p.m., and apparently monsters have curfew as the Copperhead slinks away.

Can’t Fight This Feeling

Colin Bentley/The CW

Ace, Bess, George, and Nick are hoping to find the final two pieces of Charity’s soul. Seeking to one-up Park, Ace finds out that the vessels who hosted Charity’s soul have all lived to be 100, cutting down the number of family trees they need to look in.

Bess helps George move her things out of the loft, and George expresses that she thought she’d feel angry after her breakup with Nick. Instead, she just feels empty and alone. Bess tries to comfort her by saying that scar tissue is the toughest thing a human can make before Ace misses the point completely: “No man, that’s tooth enamel. That’s the toughest thing we make.” Nice work, platanchors!

Bess asks if Ace has told Nancy how he feels, and Ace confesses that he saw Park and Nancy kiss. Bess teases that he can’t be scared of a little competition, but then Ace shares his insecurities. He notes Park’s Ivy League degree and talents before adding, “I wash dishes for a living. I sleep on Nick’s couch, I got that going for me.” He quickly changes the subject, asking Bess to find the soul splitter so they can get Charity out of whoever is hosting her.

At Daniela’s apartment with Ace, Nancy sees that the temperature is warm, not like how Matthew and Jake sought the cold before they died. Park determines Daniela isn’t a match as he and Nancy flirt via text, causing Ace to ask how things are going. She says they haven’t put a label on their relationship but that Park surprised her.

After the events of the episode, Bess encourages Ace to try telling Nancy again. Ace is afraid it will change everything, and Bess says it’s worth it. Seizing his moment, Ace pulls Nancy aside.

“I have feelings for you. I’ve had feelings for you for a long time. Seeing you with Park made me realize I’ve been an idiot for not saying something sooner. I know you guys are together now, and it’s probably too late, but I just needed to tell you. So I told you.”

Nancy is stunned, and in the world’s worst timing EVER, Ryan arrives with a cheerful, “Hey, what’s up, Ace?” Ace, sensing his moment is gone, leaves as Nancy stares after him, unable to react. Ryan babbles about how “some kid” was trying to buy all of Charity’s items, so Ryan bought them back to keep them safe. The auctioneer handed Ryan a tarot card for Nancy that means “sacrifice.” We flash to the apartment Lev is going to for protection, where Temperance knocks out Lev and the guard.

Nancy Drew airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW. You can find our other coverage of the series here!

The tagline on top reads, “Champions are made here,” indicating that there will most likely be a lot of pressure brought upon at least some of the characters to be their best.

All American: Homecoming stars Geffri Maya, Peyton Alex Smith, Kelly Jenrette, Cory Hardrict, Sylvester Powell, Camille Hyde, and Netta Walker.

Don’t miss the premiere of All American: Homecoming on Monday, February 21 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on The CW! Check out photos from the first episode here.

Andrew Garfield To Appear on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ on January 24

Awards season is treating Andrew Garfield well following his performance in Netflix’s tick, tick…BOOM! and his surprising return to Peter Parker for Spider-Man: No Way Home. To add to what the internet is calling the “Andrew Garfield Renaissance”, the actor will be appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on January 24, 2022.

Garfield has consistently proven his range as an actor, especially last year when he took on the role of Jonathan Larson in tick, tick…BOOM!, the actor’s first musical performance to date for which he spent hours training. Garfield delivered a deeply emotional and moving performance as the late Rent creator, then went on to zip into the Spider-Man suit once again to join Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Check your local listings to find out what time you can catch Garfield on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Monday, January 24. tick, tick…BOOM! is available to stream now on Netflix while Spider-Man: No Way Home is still exclusively in theaters.
