My Favorite Murder sold out the Detroit Fox Theater on Friday. True crime lovers (or “murderinos,” as we call ourselves) from all over the Mitten state flocked to the theater to see Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark talk about true crime.

Karen and Georgia have taken the podcast realm by storm since their start in 2016. The past three years have shown incredible growth in the popularity of the podcast and in the frequency of their (highly demanded) live shows. At an average of 19 million monthly listeners, it’s no surprise that these wonderful comedians were able to sell out the Fox Theatre and fill each of the 5,174 seats.

Mitten Murderinos laughed, cheered, and cringed as the true crime duo told the stories of Tina Bigger and the murder in the Rattle Run Methodist Church.

From the recent launch of their podcast network Exactly Right, to their impending book release Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered this May, it is certainly looking like 2019 will be the year for Karen and Georgia.

DC Universe’s ‘Doom Patrol’ is Off to an Impressive Start

The DC Universe’s latest offering, Doom Patrol, has been officially certified fresh by Rotten Tomatoes at 93%. Critics have called it “as irreverent and crass as it is funny,” as well as “absurdly watchable. Bananas, yes, but enjoyably bananas.”

Doom Patrol is only the third original drama created by the relatively new streaming service, following up Titans and and Young Justice: Outsiders. It is based on the DC Comics superhero team of misfits who find their powers are more of a curse than a blessing.

This ragtag group is led by Chief (Timothy Dalton), who rehabilitates each member after the horrible accidents that imbue them with their unconventional powers. The team includes Brendan Fraser as “Robotman,” Matt Bomer as “Larry Trainor,” and Diane Guerrero as “Crazy Jane.” Their nemesis “Mr. Nobody” is played by Alan Tudyk.

Supernatural fans will be pleased to see some familiar faces as well in Doom Patrol. Julian Richings, who played the the series’ first iteration of “Death,” appears as “Strumbanhfuhrer Von Fuchs.” Julie McNiven, who played angel “Anna Milton,” is “Mrs. Trainor.” Perhaps the most significant Supernatural connection, Doom Patrol was created by former showrunner Jeremy Carver.

The first two episodes of Doom Patrol are now up on DC Universe’s streaming service.

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Season 6 Episode 7 Recap: The Honeypot

Are y’all ready for this week’s recap of Brooklyn Nine-Nine? *Long sip of Boyle’s strong coffee* Yup yup yup yup yupyupyupyupYUPYUPYUP!

This week, Peralta attempts to find Holt a replacement for Gina without much luck. Holt is extremely exacting and picky, firing a man on the spot for saying “yeah” instead of “yes.” Peralta, having been the one to get Gina the job as Holt’s assistant in the first place, is determined to be the one to find Holt his perfect replacement. He thinks he has done the trick with Gordon Lunt (Deadpool’s Karan Soni) who’s dry and buttoned up temperament matches Holt’s perfectly. However, Holt is convinced that Lunt is flirting with him, among the reasons the “single Windsor knot” in his tie (“It’s the easiest to undo, he might as well be naked.” – Holt). Peralta thinks that Holt is making another excuse to not hire a new assistant and convinces him to keep Lundt on.

Meanwhile, to help ease the pressure of the overcrowded bullpen, Santiago is trying to get the squad to “Marie Kondo” their desks and work spaces. Unfortunately, her strategy backfires as Boyle, Terry, and even Scully find that all of their belongings “spark joy.” Including Scully’s disastrous decision to keep a fidget spinner over his seizure medication (“I forgot it lights up, oh I’ve made a huge mistake.” – Scully). Terry wants to keep his fancy backup suspenders (“leather yoke!”) and Boyle insists on holding on to his late grandfather’s shoes.

While Holt tries to resist Lunt’s “flirting,” Peralta makes a shocking discovery. Lunt lied on his resume about his time at the fire department, and in fact, used to be Commissioner John Kelly’s assistant at his old precinct. He tells Holt that he is right, that Lunt must be a spy sent by Kelly to get the list of Captains that Holt has amassed that oppose Kelly. He’s a “honeypot.” They decide to engage “Operation D.R.A.G.O.N. – Don’t Reveal Anything, Gordon’s Our Nemesis” and try to use his existence against Kelly. They think if they can get Lunt’s laptop they will find proof that Kelly is spying on his captains and use it as leverage. In order to get a hold of the laptop, they enact an elaborate plan – Holt takes Lunt on a “date” to the barrel museum. Where Lunt has to check his laptop bag. Once checked, Peralta bribes the bag check girl to get the laptop and clones the hard drive, (while listening to Holt drone on about the history of barrel making.)

Back at the precinct, Santiago has decide the team needs harsher measures to get the space workable. She decides to teach them an extreme Swedish technique where they have to get rid of all of their personal belongings except for one. And not only that, the final step is to set those belongings on fire. The fire is supposed to be “freeing” but also to prevent them from donating their items to Goodwill and then just buying them back later. They begrudgingly drag their garbage bags of cherished belongings out back and Rosa shoots a flaming arrow (because of course she has a bow and arrows in her work locker) into the piles, setting them ablaze.

In Holt’s office, Peralta is bummed because he could not find anything incriminating on Lunt’s laptop. Fortunately (and startlingly) Lunt enters at that moment confessing to everything. He confesses to being a honeypot plant put there by Kelly to get the list of Captains, but also that he is turning himself into them because he has fallen in love with Holt. He agrees to double cross Kelly (“Double Dragon!”) by wearing a wire the next time they meet so that they can record Kelly admitting to spying on his captains.

Meanwhile, Santiago is pushing Terry for photos of his now clean desk so that she can send them to the magazine “Organizers Weekly.” She forces him to open his drawers (“otherwise it doesn’t count!” – Santiago) and discovers that he has kept his fancy backup suspenders instead of letting them burn. The squad is upset (“I burned Grandpa Boyle’s bitty booty!” – Boyle) until Terry admits that the reason he bought the suspenders was so that he could wear them once he passed his Lieutenant’s exam. Unfortunately, he has failed the test twice now, and is losing hope that he will ever make Lieutenant. Dejected, he throws his backup suspenders into the trash.

Holt and Peralta follow Lunt to his meeting with Kelly, wearing disguises in case they are spotted. However, Lunt immediately confesses to Kelly that he has been sent to record him and opens his shirt to reveal the wire. Peralta and Holt storm in to confront both of them. When Kelly threatens to expose Holt unless he hands in his resignation, Holt reveals that after spending the night on the couch (he told Kevin about his plan for Lunt and Kevin was upset when he saw how attractive Lunt was) he read the synopsis of several “Thomas Cruise films” and realized that the only way to best Kelly was to triple cross him. The “Triple Dragon – Two Righteous Individuals Performing Law Enforcement Directives Rapidly Against Gordon Our Nemesis.” He planted mics in the condiments and had cameras set up recording their entire confrontation, which included Kelly admitting to the spying. Holt then gives Kelly his list of demands, including ending the new “stop and frisk” policy and re-opening the the first floor of the precinct.

Back in the Nine-nine, Terry comes in to discover his desk is covered in textbooks to help him pass the Lieutenant’s exam. Santiago got him the books and also a new pair of suspenders (the originals were covered in “squad goo.”) and is determined to help him pass. The second floor is no longer overcrowded and it seems that Holt has won the battle against Kelly, for now at least.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine airs Thursdays at 9pm on NBC.

‘Wynonna Earp’ Faces Potential Cancellation: Fans Rally to #FightforWynonna

0

It might be time for #Earpers to fight for their show once again! Coming straight out of their People’s Choice Award win, Wynonna Earp (which home network SyFy had previously renewed for a 4 season) may face cancellation. Speculation started following a (now deleted) tweet from showrunner Emily Andras yesterday which asked if fans were ready to fight for the show. She continued today, asking fans to step up.

From what we have learned so far, it looks as if the issue lies not with SyFy, but financials from IDW, which licenses (and funds) the show. SyFy has released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Syfy ordered season four of Wynonna Earp from IDW and is completely committed to the series. This has not changed.”

The show, which was expected to have already started production on season 4, could use all the help we can muster! We are huge #Earpers here at Nerds, and are no strangers to rallying support for beloved shows. If you love the inclusivity, witty writing, amazing cast, and tacos, throw your support behind Wynonna Earp by tweeting #fightforwynonna!

Countdown to ‘Endgame’: Our Favorite Moments From ‘Thor’

0

We are only a few short weeks away from the premiere of Avengers: Endgame. And as the release date approaches and we reach the end of this journey, we want to look back on everything that brought us here. The heroes we watched struggle, grow, and save humanity over the last ten years and our favorite moments of their stories. We will be going through each phase in order, covering every movie leading up to April 26.

Chris Hemsworth in Thor (2011). Courtesy of IMDb.

Released in 2011, Thor introduced us to the God of Thunder himself. Thor went from always looking for a fight, to finding something to fight for.

Here are some of our favorite moments from Thor:

Courtesy of Marvel Studios

Picking a favorite part in this film is almost impossible. This first film in the Thor trilogy did a splendid job in not only introducing the character that would become so essential to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also expanding the Marvel world into a different realm and quite literally, space. Thor is a lovable character who does nothing halfway. Much like Tony Stark, Thor spends this first adventure doubting his superiority and finding ways to adapt to a completely new environment. The groundwork to conflict with his brother and the relationship to his father, which will become essential to his journey and development, is built in this movie. Loki is of course one of those characters who steals the entire show in a story, thanks to Tom Hiddleston’s masterful portrayal of the God of Mischief. He doesn’t even have to do much, one look is already enough to land the proverbial punchline in a scene with Loki. Next to Loki, other minor characters like Heimdall, Darcy, or even Odin himself really steal the scenes and contribute to the dynamic of the film.
My favorite parts are Loki’s confrontation with his father and Thor explaining the myth of the nine realms to Jane, because both show the depth of the characters. Chris Hemsworth himself puts so much love and passion into the role that it is always a joy to watch him play the God of Thunder. The romance and love story become secondary to Thor’s will to save humanity, Earth, and his new friends. -Conny

I am a huge fan of mythology so it is pretty easy to see why the Thor trilogy, with its roots in Norse mythology, is one of my favorites of Marvel’s franchises. The thought Marvel put into following the line of facts with this mythology alongside the acting of Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, and the other amazing cast members really made this movie a hit. While I think the Marvel movies before Thor were phenomenal, I really do believe that this movie took the story line above and beyond because the audience finally got to see that this world expands across galaxies. I believe it was also crucial to move the bigger story line along as we get to see in later Marvel movies. We start to get introduced to the bigger players and little pieces start to get put together.  One of my favorite parts is when Thor is upset about his father forbidding him to go to Jotunheim after the Ice Giants interrupted his coronation and Loki, essentially, tricking him into going anyway. This is one of my favorite parts mainly due to the fact that it is such a little brother trick that every time I re-watch it, I cannot contain my laughter. -Mikayla

Courtesy of Marvel Studios

The Thor movies are possibly my favorite of all the Avengers movies and while Loki is my favorite character, his scenes in the first Thor movie are very serious. I enjoy the intricacies of Loki’s plots, how he moves behind the scenes and manipulates everyone to achieve his goals.
Some of my favorite moments in the first Thor movie involve Darcy. She is the sarcastic character that seems to say exactly what the audience is thinking. When she’s not teasing Thor, she’s making comments about his muscles and how odd he is.
A few other fun moments include when Thor’s friends are introduced to the humans he has met on Midgard, Thor smashing the cup in a gesture meaning he would like another drink, and Jane accidentally hitting Thor with a truck multiple times. This movie is full of tiny moments that are full of wit and humor, while also telling a story of two brothers struggling to figure out who they are, entwined with a familiar mythology in a superhero universe. More so than the previous films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor sets up a lot of pieces for subsequent movies. -Heather

Stay tuned as we look back on all our favorite moments from the Marvel Universe as we anticipate what lies ahead for our heroes in Avengers: Endgame.

Be sure check out the rest of this series!
