Adam Silvera Reveals Covers for ‘The First to Die at the End’

Adam Silvera’s much-anticipated upcoming release finally has a cover! (Well, multiple covers.) Silvera has revealed the US and UK covers for his prequel novel The First to Die at the End (TFTDATE). It is set in the same universe as Silvera’s bestselling They Both Die at the End. TFDATE is the first of two interconnected novels. The book releases on October 4, 2022. You can pre-order a copy here.

The US covers come in two gorgeous versions: the standard version (left) and the Barnes & Noble exclusive edition (right). The B&N exclusive will also have a bonus short story, an author Q&A, printed endpapers, and a case stamp. Pre-order that version here. Simón Prades did the art with design by Erin Fitzsimmons. Check them out below.

The UK editions feature the same cover. The exclusive Waterstones edition (right) features sprayed edges and will be limited to 2,000 signed copies. The art was done by Sean Williams. Find them below.

The synopsis, per HarperCollins, reads:

“It’s the night before Death-Cast goes live, and there’s one question on everyone’s mind: Can Death-Cast actually predict when someone will die, or is it just an elaborate hoax?

Orion Pagan has waited years for someone to tell him that he’s going to die. He has a serious heart condition, and he signed up for Death-Cast so he could know what’s coming.

Valentino Prince is restarting his life in New York. He has a long and promising future ahead and he only registered for Death-Cast after his twin sister nearly died in a car accident.

Orion and Valentino cross paths in Times Square and immediately feel a deep connection. But when the first round of End Day calls goes out, their lives are changed forever—one of them receives a call, and the other doesn’t. Though neither boy is certain how the day will end, they know they want to spend it together…even if that means their goodbye will be heartbreaking.”

They Both Die at the End follows Rufus and Mateo, two teens who receive calls from Death-Cast, telling them they’re going to die that day. Through an app called Last Friend, the two connect with each other. They set out to live the best last day they can. And yes. They really do die at the end.

TBDATE initially released in 2017. In the past year and a half or so, the book found renewed attention after blowing up on BookTok. Since then, it climbed its way to #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and has been #1 for just over a year. It’s also reached #1 on indie and international bestseller lists. In May of 2021, a TV adaptation was announced (the second confirmed adaptation for Silvera). Find more info on that here.

The First to Die at the End releases on October 4. Be sure to pre-order. Follow Silvera on Instagram and Twitter to stay up to date on his latest announcements.
