Little Mix Wins British Group at BRIT Awards 2021
In a historic moment, Little Mix is now the first girl group to ever win the BRIT Award for British Group! Despite iconic groups like the Spice Girls and many more previously being nominated for the award, a girl band had never taken home the prize until now. This is the third overall BRIT Awards win for the band and the first without original member Jesy Nelson, who left Little Mix earlier this year. The band is also celebrating their tenth year together this summer after forming on the television show The X Factor back in 2011.
The band acknowledged their predecessors and the state of the music industry in their acceptance speech, with member Jade Thirlwall noting, “The fact that a girl band never has won this award really does speak volumes. So this award isn’t just for us. It’s for the Spice Girls, Sugababes, All Saints, Girls Aloud — all of the incredible incredible female bands, this one’s for you.” Leigh-Anne Pinnock also acknowledged the sexism and racism the band has faced over the years in a powerful moment.
