While you may not have known him before, there’s no way to escape him now. Simu Liu, star of award-winning Canadian sitcom Kim’s Convenience, was announced as one of Marvel’s newest heroes as he takes up the mantle of Shang-Chi in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Now, despite taking on the huge project of being the world’s newest superhero, he’s also writing a memoir.
While still untitled, the memoir is set to release in 2021, same as his Shang-Chi debut. The story will retell his family’s move from China to Canada, and the difficulties they faced, when Simu was just five years old.
“Their hard work and sacrifice gave me a great life and allowed me to pursue my own dreams. I’m so excited to share my family’s story with the world, including all of the bumps and bruises we experienced along the way.”
Simu has always been an advocate of representation in today’s media, calling out its shortcomings and stereotypes with a much needed voice. The arrival of the first Asian-led film to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a great start, and we can’t wait to see how Simu skyrockets from here.
