CBS released the trailer for the much anticipated Season 2 of Star Trek Discovery. In August, the network announced the reprisal of Patrick Stewarts‘ beloved role as Jean-Luc Picard in a new currently untitled Star Trek series. It would seem, however, that was not the only surprise in store for fans.

In the press release CBS teases the return of Dr. Hugh Culber, a fan favorite played by Wilson Cruz. Viewers will remember that Dr. Culber died in “Despite Yourself” (episode ten of last season). Cruz discussed the concern of the trope of yet another death of an LBGTQIA character and attempted to assuage the fan base with the hint that a return was likely for Dr. Culber in a TV Guide interview in January.

“The fact of the matter is you’re going to be seeing [Culber] again,” he revealed. “This is gonna be a story of transcendent love. We’re casting these two gay characters as heroes. Their love and their dedication to their crew actually is gonna save the universe.”

Said Cruz, “I want the audience to trust us, that we are going to bring the story that they’ve all longed for.”

Ethan Peck will be joining the cast as well this season as a much younger Mr Spock. With the signature eyebrows and ears, it’s not a stretch to make the connection to Leonard Nimoy’s iconic character. Spock will join the crew as the half-brother of disgraced officer Michael Burnham, played beautifully by Sonequa Martin-Green.

Spock warns of an apocalyptic vision and that someone is working to end all sentient life in the galaxy. The new trailer appears to focus on this new villain called the “Red Angel” and the battle that will ensue.  Now all we have to do is wait for the premier.

Season two begins Jan 17 on CBS All Access.
