Dude, Where’s the Pie? Celebrate National Pi Day, Supernatural-Style

Ok, we know that National Pi Day is technically about the mathematical constant, but it is not a far leap for those in the “Supernatural” fandom from pi to pie. Fans of the show are no stranger to the love affair between Dean Winchester and pie. Over the years, pie has played an increasingly staring roll in the series. Today we celebrate National Pi Day, Dean Winchester, and his life-long love for pie.

 

1.11 Scarecrow

We first see Dean mention his beloved pie in “Scarecrow”. He visits a café in Burkitsville, Indiana which makes their pie from the local apple crop. The server tells the out of town couple near Dean, “We’re famous for our apples. So, you gotta try this pie.” Dean then proceeds to order a slice himself. When he is offered as a sacrifice and tied up, Dean shouts the classic line above.

 

2.21 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One

Parked outside a local diner, Dean asks Sam to bring back pie as he runs into grab them dinner. Sam never returns with said pie as he is abducted by demons and taken to Cold Oak.

 

4.02 Lazarus Rising

Following Dean’s resurrection, he and Sam eat at a diner where Dean orders pie. To his dismay, the waitress is possessed by a demon, and Dean confronts her, denying himself the joy of his pie. Ever the gentleman, Dean leaves money for the pie before leaving.

 

4.02 Are You There, God? It’s Me

Dean Winchester

Facing mountains of angel research, Dean demands Sam bring him pie. While on the food run Sam encounters Ruby and forgets the coveted pie. Dean’s face says it all. “Dude, where’s the pie?”

 

5.15 Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid

Freshly minted zombie Karen Singer loves baking pies from the moment she returns. In fact she fills Bobby’s house with pies much to Dean’s delight. Not only does he get to eat his pie, but he gets to have it TWICE!

 

5.16 Dark Side of the Moon

Dead once again, Sam and Dean go to heaven. Of course heaven would not be complete for Dean Winchester without pie! Dean’s memory of Mary baking him pie is perhaps one of the more tender moments of the show, and may reveal insights into the origin of his love for pie.

 

5.19 Hammer of the Gods

The hotel desk clerk informs Dean the hotel serves “the best pie in the tri-state area.” Dean, of course, goes to investigate and discovers a pie buffet. Sam, however would rather leave the hotel that night:

Dean: “In this storm? What, it’s–“

Sam: “It’s Biblical, exactly. It’s friggin’ Noah’s ark out there and we’re eating pie.”

 

7.03 The Girl Next Door

Nursing a broken leg, Dean asks Sam to bring him pie. Shockingly, Sam does not return with said pie. “You got cake, that’s close enough right?” asks Sam. No Sam, cake ≠ pie.

 

7.05 Shut Up, Dr. Phil

Dean settles in their latest motel room with some delicious cream pie. However, Sam arrives with spoiled chicken feet, an ingredient for a spell, and the smell puts Dean off eating his pie.

 

7.22 There Will Be Blood

As Leviathans use corn syrup to make humans passive food for themselves, Dean is faced with the cold hard nutritional facts of his beloved pie. In desperation he finds one labeled “natural”, but same breaks the news that corn syrup is indeed natural. He is forced to forgo pie until the Leviathans are eradicated.

 

8.09 Citizen Fang

Dean visits the Gumbo Shack in search of Benny and asks Elizabeth for a slice of pie. However he is informed they are out of pecan, his preferred pie selection.

“You’re out of pecan? Story of my life,” says Dean.

 

8.19 Taxi Driver

Dean returns to Kevin’s hideout with food for both of them, including a delicious slice of pie. The ever-paranoid Kevin emerges from his closet long enough to snag the tray, including said pie. Dean is understandably devastated.

 

9.03 I’m No Angel

Ever the health conscious brother, Sam ridicules Dean for picking up pie. Dean does not care for he loves pie.

 

9.12 Sharp Teeth

While lunching with Garth’s new family, Garth reveals Dean’s love for pie. Though Dean does not appear pleased to have this weakness shared with ‘monsters’, but he is served Joyce’s ‘famous’ pie regardless. Sam uses this fact to defend the pack, “They gave you lunch; they gave you pie”.

 

12.02 Mamma Mia

Harrowing back to his childhood, Dean gets to eat pie given to him by Mary. He is thrilled to have both mom and pie in the same room again. Mary is slightly appalled by his eating style.

 

12.05 The One You’ve Been Waiting

For

Sam returns to the bunker with pie, but shockingly Dean declines pie in order to do research. Only after killing Hitler does his appetite for the delectable dessert return.

 

 

 

12.10 Lily Sunder Has Some Regrets

Sam and Dean charge into the café where Castiel is meeting with fellow angels. Ever the opportunist, Dean conversationally asks “Who wants some pie?” Upon leaving, Isham actually tosses money onto the table for Dean to order his pie. We don’t see him actually order pie, but perhaps he ate it off screen.

 

13.08 The Scorpion and the Frog

 

Not one to let good pie go to waste, Dean chows down on the pie offered by the demon Barthamus in a diner. He waits to eat it until after Barthamus leaves of course. After all, pie is pie.

 

 

Pie Cameos

Famous in its own right, pie also has a few on screen cameos and mentions without Dean, although they are almost always for Dean.

 

3.05 Bedtime Stories

Pie has its first solo appearance in this episode. It sits tantalizing in the window of a cottage in the woods by which a lost couple is passing. The sweet old lady inside invites them in for a slice, but the pie contains poison and the couple is stabbed to death by the old woman.

 

3.16 No Rest for the Wicked

Currently inhabiting a child’s body, Lilith forces the family to repeatedly celebrate her birthday. Pie is one of the many desserts on the table. Lilith kills the girl’s grandfather and the poor guy falls face first into his slice of pie. Sadly, he didn’t even get to eat any before his demise.

 

8.20 Pac-Man Fever

Headed out on a food run, Charlie says, “I will pick us up some grub, and unlike you Sam, I will not forget the pie” a fact she picked up when reading the Supernatural books. Though she promised, Charlie does indeed forget the pie.

 

8.22 Clip Show

On a supplies run for two of his favorite humans, Castiel picks up several things that Dean likes including beer and Busty Asian Beauties. He hunts around for pie, but cannot find any. In desperation Cas resorts to threatening the store clerk. After all, Dean needs his pie.

 

10.03 Soul Survivor

Upset that he may be killing his demon brother, Sam visits Dean’s room where a half eaten slice of pie sits.

 

10.22 The Prisoner

Crowley eats a piece of pie as he reminisces about the good times he and Dean (as a demon) had together.

 

 

Pie and the Supernatural Cast

Pie has become such an integral part of the show that it has even permeated the lives of the cast beyond the camera.

Pie Pranks

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki used the classic pie to the face prank (multiple times) to celebrate Misha Collins’ first time directing. Misha appears thrilled at the warm and heartfelt gesture.

 

Pie Promos

Known for their comedic photoshoots, Entertainment used Dean’s love for pie as inspiration. No one comes between Dean and his pie.

 

Jensen know Supernatural fans adore Dean’s love for pie and uses it in one of the CW promo commercials.
