Mayor of Kingstown follows the McLusky family — power brokers in Kingstown, Michigan where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry. New York Times bestselling author Rick Riordan turns the proverbial page from his time in the Percy Jackson universe to a triumphant new story in Daughter of the Deep. In these pages lay rich witty banter, clever storytelling, and action-packed adventure that will have fans swearing they can feel the cool ocean water on their skin. Set completely outside the world of mythology, Riordan instead draws his inspiration from Jules Vernes’ classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and asks a fascinating question: what if that tale were real? Readers will find out what that might mean for the world, for technology, and for the freshman class of Harding-Pencroft Academy.
If you aren’t familiar with the classic novel, don’t worry. Riordan effortlessly weaves in the details of the Nautilus and its adventures throughout Daughter of the Deep. Readers won’t miss a beat as they dive deep into the unknown with Ana Dakkar and her loyal crew who happen to be comprised of only freshmen. When a terrible tragedy strikes HP (Harding-Pencroft Academy), Ana and her classmates’ lives are spared thanks to their off campus weekend class trials. The lone professor with them informs Ana that their rival school, Land Institute, and HP have been in a century-long feud and she is at the center of it. Ana is thrust into the Captain’s seat as she uncovers the truth of her heritage as a living descendent of Captain Nemo Dakkar and what that means for her future.
Ana isn’t a perfect captain and doesn’t believe herself to be a natural leader, but she steps into the role by utilizing every crew members’ unique gifts where they are most needed. On the surface, this is an adventure tale but Riordan asks important questions about the nature of good, evil, and that all-important gray area in which so much of the world exists. Is anything inherently good or does it simply depend on who is telling the story? Ana’s journey finds her own viewpoints and knowledge challenged repeatedly allowing for excellent character growth. She’ll also have to ask whether HP’s choice to limit the release of Nemo’s technological discoveries to the world was the right one.
The fast-paced adventure will keep readers engaged from the first pages to the last and certainly leave you hoping we’ll see more of Ana Daakar and the HP crew in the future. In classic Riordan fashion, readers can expect shocking plot twists and some painful (in a good way) end-of-chapter cliffhangers that demand you keep reading (even it’s 2 a.m. and you really should put it down).
I cannot sing the praises of Daughter of the Deep without also highlighting the fantastic representation seamlessly incorporated in the freshman class of HP. From our heroine Ana who is of Bundeli Indian descent to her best friend Nahlina of Brasileira parda decent and the endearing Ester, who’s autistic, and her emotional support dog Top, I could go on and on about the diversity within this book. It feels as if there is someone to represent everyone within the pages of Daughter of the Deep, a refreshing and important step within YA literature and one that Riordan is known for in his writing. Riordan’s efforts to continue writing inclusively is one of the many reasons fans love him.
Daughter of the Deep is an exhilarating must read for fans of all ages! The book is available for pre-order now and will hit shelves everywhere on October 5.
Are you ready for an adult animated comedy series that has spy action cliches, numerous pop culture references, and a EuropeVision that will leave songs stuck in your head for days after? Coming to Netflix on September 2 is the ten episode series Q-Force created by Gabe Liedman, who writes the episodes alongside Sean Hayes and Michael Schur.
There are spoilers beyond this point.
From the first “Bye Bitch!” we are introduced to a soldier-esque character who is good at what he does. During Steve Maryweather’s class of 2011 American Intelligence Agency (AIA) graduation valedictorian speech, he comes out as a gay man. He is abruptly interrupted by Director Chunley, who says that actually Agent Buck, who happens to be straight, is the valedictorian — of course, he is. So, the Director sends Agent Maryweather to West Hollywood, also known as WeHo, thinking he will never hear from him again. But Q-Force is here to stay.
“You can’t pander to the gays they can smell it.”
It is now 10 years later. Steve has built a team of the best Agents in WeHo who have never been assigned a case, and their headquarters are in his garage. After finding a single grey hair one evening, Steve becomes even more determined that they will get a case and save the world even if they have to go rogue to do it. But first, it is introduction time!
Netflix
Steve Maryweather, who goes by Mary, is overly optimistic and has put his career before everything. That can make him, at times, a bit arrogant. His lack of dating game gets pointed out when he tries to flirt with the adorable Benji. Steve’s blind allegiance to the AIA gets shaken to its core as the team goes on their first mission and discovers something much bigger. Lesbian genius mechanic and mom energy of the group, Deb, a former Survivor contestant who balances her secret spy work identity with her life at home with her wife Pam and their 16 trauma pit bulls. Drag queen and master of disguise, Twink, is a vocalist, theatrical, and uses his jelly bones to get what is needed to be done. Sarcastic and goth Stat is a brilliant hacker who says what you may be thinking about but out loud. She also hates many things, as we learn from the profile that her girlfriend Jacqueline who is her AI girlfriend who has gained sentience creates. Buck is a typical macho male, egotistical womanizer, loves the smell of his own farts, and takes to insulting the members of Q-Force continuously. They report to boss lady V; she puts her faith and job on the underdog ensemble succeeding and not screwing up. But like Steve, she is going to see what the AIA is as the mystery unfolds each episode.
With a fictional EuorpeVision that is a front for black market weapons sales, an AIA convention, a gay retirement village that is not what it seems, and a different take on Princess Diaries, viewers are in for a treat — including many amazing guest actors, including Dan Levy, Stephanie Beatriz, and Jane Lynch to name a few. This is not your typical Saturday morning cartoon to curl up with a bowl of cereal with the kids; it is full of nudity, profanity, and violence. And okay, yes, the first teaser trailer fell short and did not show the true potential of this show. Try not to let a 40-second clip cloud your judgment to the entire season. It stars and focuses on LGBTQ+ characters voiced by LGBTQ+ people, plus many LGBTQ+ creators working on the animated show, which in itself is a move forward regarding representation.
“Like, we’re the first queer agents in the field ever. I feel so much pressure to show I’m the best because if I mess up, I don’t know if anyone else like us will ever get a chance. “
“Uh-huh. Hey, why don’t you try being a Black woman for five seconds?”
It is using and poking fun at the stereotypes mixed in with real-life issues. After watching *cough* four times *cough* I can definitely see how depending on your humor, some could be offended. But every time I watched, I noticed some different pop culture Easter eggs (Sailor Moon fans, watch out for Antony’s phone case). I enjoyed the season, the satire, the humor, that there was character growth in each of the characters, and that it had heart. I am hopeful for a season 2 (fingers crossed) to get more backstory on the characters.
The series features the voice talents of Wanda Sykes, Sean Hayes, Gary Cole, Patti Harrison, Matt Rogers, Laurie Metcalf, David Harbour, Gabe Liedman, and keep an ear out for the fantastic guest stars.
Q-Force premiers on Netflix on Thursday, September 2, and stay tuned for our interview with the creator, actor, and writer Gabe Liedman.
Hello, Drew Crew! Welcome to our ninth edition of Nerds Rewatch Nancy Drew, where we will be rewatching the series from the beginning to prepare for the arrival of season 3 this fall. We’ll be watching three episodes of season 1 per week, then switching to two episodes a week for season 2, ending the week of the season 3 premiere. Never seen an episode and want to dive in? Seen every episode but want a refresher? Either way, we’ve got you covered with both spoiler-free and spoiler-filled discussions of our favorite sleuth and her friends. You can head over to HBO Max to watch seasons 1 and 2 now.
Under each episode heading, you’ll find a discussion ONLY of the current episode and the ones preceding it, while at the end of each article there will be a section discussing how the episodes relate to the series as a whole (translation: spoilers). If you missed last week’s rewatch, you can head here for all the action. Without further ado, let’s jump right into the next episodes of Nancy Drew season 2!
Carson’s quiet support for Nancy earns him another “Best Dad” award. He makes it clear that he believes she’s capable of going to college, but doesn’t push her.
Everything about the college girls being babysat by Ace and Nick is perfection. Ace’s blush when they tease him for knowing Downton Abbey, Nick being ditched by Ace as soon as possible, and their generally ditzy behavior is hilarious. The storyline also contains my favorite Ace one-liner as Ace shares a very important piece of life advice: “Zoe, you can’t cook pancakes in the oven. Who raised you?!”
While Room 413 and the idea of a hotel being haunted for tourism could be based on a number of stories, there is a haunted Room 413 at the Admiral Fell Inn in Baltimore. Coincidence?
Leah Lewis kicks off an incredible dual performance in this episode as Odette starts becoming her own person distinct from George. Lewis is great at distinguishing the two. She can play Odette as creepy, but also sad and sarcastic. Meanwhile, she explores what it means to George’s life that she’s “time sharing” her body with a ghost. Also, this is George’s second major ghost possession for those playing along at home.
Nick and Ryan teaming up creates some juicy drama potential. On the surface, these two couldn’t be more different, and their approaches to bringing Everett to justice prove that. But they share the same goal, and that will have to be enough for now.
Speaking of Everett, we learn a big piece of information about how Nancy fits into Everett’s plans in this episode. If Ryan is caught conspiring against his father and Everett is convicted, Nancy will take control of Everett’s company as his granddaughter. With Nancy being the potential heir to his empire, it’s even more important that Carson, Ryan, Nancy, and the rest of the Drew Crew are able to keep Nancy’s origins a secret.
And we have a new ship: Amace! Amanda and Ace are sweet together in this episode, with Ace standing up for Amanda with the rude hotel guests and Amanda complimenting his hacker skills. Sparks are there from the beginning — but where will it lead? And is that a jealous Nancy pulling Ace away? Hmmm …
It’s great to see Nancy slowly taking steps to go back to school after talking with Jennifer. It’s clear she’s afraid, but her ambition is still there. Now if she could just figure out what last name to put on that application, she would be ready to go!
Fun fact: This episode’s title is a nod to the Nancy Drew book The Spider Sapphire Mystery.
Everything about the hunt is designed perfectly. The writers really seem to enjoy writing for the snotty elite characters of Horseshoe Bay, and it’s always funny to get a glimpse into that world.
There are lots of little nods to Ryan being a decent person at heart in this episode, like the revelation that he looks after Patrice Dodd. He’s come a long way from the spoiled rich guy from season 1.
Fun fact: Kennedy McMann improvised Nancy’s line to Ryan as she leaves The Claw.
"This episode was directed by the brilliant @rox_anne_b. I especially loved how Roxanne found ways to maximize the humor in this episode – like the little bounce and grimace Nancy gives when she tells Ryan to stop being so weird! Which was an ad-libbed line."@lisabao10#NancyDrewpic.twitter.com/hlR9hWFwzG
I’ve said it before, but I love the platanchor dynamic between Ace and Bess. They work so well together, and they offer each other much needed support. Ace bringing Bess cookies while she cries over Diana’s rejection is a lovely moment.
This episode’s best one-liner once again goes to Ace as he tells the Drew Crew he is one with nature.
It’s nice to get a Bess-centric episode that can really delve into her backstory. Maddison Jaizani is always fabulous as Bess, but this week we really got to see her emotional side. She loses the biological family she worked so hard to find, and while her found family in the Drew Crew is ready to support her, it still hurts. It’s also an intentional parallel to how her mother kicked her out at age 13.
“ @missandreart pitched that it should remind Bess of her mother kicking her out all over again. I think that loss of love and rejection and never having a family is Bess’s core wound.” @lisabao10#NancyDrewhttps://t.co/cDK1twiWaE
Stephen is despicable, but actor Oliver Rice is great at being menacing. The initial scene in the airport between Stephen and Bess immediately sets up their dynamic so well.
It’s nice to see Nancy and George buddying up more for side quests. Their personalities are so different, but they’re both driven women who respect each other. They also had a great scene together when they realize George will die if the shroud is used again. Lewis’ face is priceless.
Fun fact: Nancy’s line informing the Drew Crew that she’s been chloroformed before is a nod to the books, where poor Nancy is always getting chloroformed.
"We've been wanting to chloroform Nancy for a while (sorry, @kennedymcmann!), because it’s such a callback to what happens in the Nancy Drew books. That’s why Nancy tells the Drew Crew that it wasn’t her first chloroform or her last (*evil laugh*)…" @lisabao10#NancyDrew
Valentina Samuels has arrived! She gets down to business right away, immediately bringing up Tiffany’s murder, Lucy’s suicide, Everett’s murders, and Ryan’s time in rehab. So much for a fluff piece. But Val seems to know a little too much, and this definitely won’t be as easy as Ryan thinks.
Some Leftover Fake Haunting Supplies …
Colin Bentley/The CW
Welcome, Grant! Ace’s brother makes his first appearance.
Val’s arc is great. From working with Celia Hudson to eventually falling in love with Ryan, I’m interested to see where they take her character in season 3.
Amace is a great relationship for a lot of reasons, but perhaps the most interesting one is that the writers make Amanda so likeable. Normally, the counter-ship to a ship like Nace isn’t compelling, with the other member of the love triangle being fairly benign or so evil that it’s clear who to root for. But Amanda is adorable, and she and Ace complement each other well. Kudos to Aadila Dosani for making Amanda a character worth rooting for in her own right.
Odette comes such a long way from when we first meet her. Her eventual choice to recede into the background rather than keep George from living her life is a far cry from the Odette who callously tells Bess that George will have to die.
What did we miss? Let us know in the comments! Seasons 1 and 2 of Nancy Drew are available now on HBO Max. Be sure to catch up on episodes 9 and 10 of season 2 for next week’s rewatch!
How I Met Your Father, based on the hit series How I Met Your Mother, is lining up a great cast! According to Deadline, Josh Peck, best known for his role in Drake and Josh, and Ashley Reyes from American Gods, will make several recurring appearances in Hulu’s spinoff series.
Peck is set to play Drew, a handsome vice principal at Jesse’s (Chris Lowell) elementary school. Reyes is set to play Hannah, an intelligent and determined surgical resident who lives in Los Angeles and is maintaining a long distance relationship with Sid (Suraj Sharma). The series also stars Hilary Duff as Sophie, who is telling her son how she met his father. Peck and Reyes will also join Tom Ainsley, Francia Raisa, Tien Tran, and more for the series.

Created by Joe Tracz and Rob Rokicki, the show initially ran Off-Broadway before doing a limited Broadway run in fall 2019, as well as a 32-city tour of the United States.
Although the pandemic means that you can’t go see the musical for yourself right now, you can check out the soundtrack before you head here to order the script.
Everyone’s favorite prehistoric family, the Croods, are heading to the small screen with The Croods: Family Tree, a new limited series.

We’ve seen Brooke Davis pummel Chuck Bass with her made-of-aluminum crutches in the Chalet Girl’s mountains. Now, another Upper East Sider calls for their former The CW peer in a set for the screen, movie team-up. Golden Boy, perhaps? Variety believes so.
Alongside Chace Crawford, The Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev will leave the fangs on the bedside table for a more run-of-the-mill murder mystery approach in the ensemble comedy Reunion. Its backdrop is a high school reunion party located at a pretty lavish mansion. Jamie Chung, Lil Rel Howery, Billy Magnussen, and Jillian Bell also star.
The Perfect Date’s Chris Nelson is directing with writers Jake Emanuel and Willie Block from The Edge of Sleep penning the script. Production will start this week in Los Angeles.
